Hubs loves Chinese food. Take-out or a formal sit-down restaurant and he's down for either. Since moving to The Catskills, we've dabbled in one iconic sit-down spot in downtown Kingston which turned out to be dreadful and we've also enjoyed a take-out spot not far from home. What had happened was, thanks to hubs, he found Kingston Wok located in one of the many plazas on Ulster Ave in Kingston. Despite its strip small location, inside, looks anything but. The frontal has a bar area and is decked out with large plants. Their flaming red+black dining room hits you hard with lantern lamps giving out a nice glow to the already dim area. Hubs enjoyed his dumpling soup and charred pork ribs as he requested and pork fried rice. The fried wonton strips were divine+fresh tasting and my Thai Chili crispy red snapper fillet, was more than I could chew. But it was also busy. And while the sauce on the fish had a subtle heat, it was a gloppy heap of it. What's more, I was about to reheat my leftovers and actually noticed the red dye sauce at home. It was a turn-off. We'll return- but I'll go for non-saucy menu items next time. Our server was fast on his feet though and my Lychee Martini had nice strength.

This is suppose to be chicken and broccoli

An order was placed for take out for a decant amount food. The staff were friendly however...WHERE'S THE BEEF? The photo is not even an exaggeration. There were little pieces of chicken with about a head of broccoli. All of the other dishes were similar, minimal pieces of meat and high in oil. Options must be sparse in Kingston because there were people eating in the restaurant but I don't see why it's sustainable with below average servings. The vegetable to meat ratio should be adjusted. First and last time at this location.

    Pad thai and crab rangoon

Very friendly staff. The crab rangoons were good, but were served with an odd sauce, something like sauce for orange chicken. The pad thai did not have much flavor and tasted very oily.

Fried Chinatown dumplings (pork & chives), $7.45 for 6.

It appears that they do a lot of takeout, as there were only three tables inside the restaurant. It's obviously a family run place, because of one of the children was playing with their toys off in a corner of the kitchen. I decided to go for the shrimp toast, appetizer, and the lunch, special of shrimp and lobster sauce with vegetable fried rice, and wonton soup. The food came quick, and it was absolutely amazing. The shrimp toast was crunchy, and had a lot of filling in it. You could definitely taste the shrimp. There were six of them in the appetizer, which was very generous for the price. I was going to take a few home with me, but I couldn't stop eating them. I finished off the whole appetizer. I loved the shrimp in lobster sauce. At first, I was confused, because it was like an egg drop soup with shrimp in it. I thought it was going to be a Brown sauce. Then I realized, that's what lobster sauce is I was confusing lobster sauce with oyster sauce. The soup was creamy, rich, and delicious. There were "only" four shrimp in the bowl. I say "only" because those shrimp were huge! They were tender and delicious, and a very generous portion. The fried rice had a good flavor to it as well the rice was not under or overdone, and they were generous with the veggies.. I ended up taking home some of my shrimp main dish, and all of my wonton soup. The wonton soup reheated, wonderfully, the broth was delicious, and the wontons were tender. With a large amount of delicious filling. The price for everything was absolutely reasonable. I would come back in a heartbeat. Thank you!

It's obviously an unusual choice for James Beard America's Classic to be mostly take-out only, with dine-in only for dinner a few nights a week (most of which are buffet). And some of the myriad online debates about this place say that maybe it's about community and history more than food. In any case, I did really enjoy the egg roll and shrimp chow fun. I don't have much grounds for comparison for egg rolls, but they were fresh-fried without being too oily, and had a nice contrast in the pickled filling. The shrimp chow fun--which my companion was excited was on the menu, as it's especially old-school--was cooked perfectly and wasn't too crazy salty. I wasn't as blown away by the pork fried rice (which seemed maybe more darkened by sauce than by frying) or the chicken with string beans (with the string beans not being as charred as I'd expect).

Crispy on the outside, full of veggies and pork. The celery stands out as extremely fresh and delish! The wonton soup is flavorful and the filling in the wontons is fresh and tasty.
