Asian food is very diverse and the cooking techniques are varied... to lump together Chinese, Thai and Japanese is not really good if you want anything to taste like it should. Someone brought me here, I never would have gone on my own. I ordered Pad Thai... I really shouldn't have done that. She ordered the special of scallops and bok choi. My food was pretty nasty tasting and her scallops were really fishy. She paid a lot for like 5 small scallops and a plate full of bok choi no one could possibly eat. The food is decent, but the service was so awful that I will probably not return. I walked into an almost-empty restaurant and the hostess didn't acknowledge me. She was taking a take-out order from another customer. The customer was indecisive, and kept looking at the menu he was ordering from. The hostess could have made eye contact, but she did not. So, I walked to the entrance of the dining room where one waitress and one waiter both ignored me. She was putting out napkins and straightening silverware and did not look up for several minutes. The waiter was standing with his back to the wall, about five feet from me, just staring into space. I went back to where the hostess was, and she was talking to the sushi chef, with her back to me. I waited another minute, and the finally said out loud, "Could I please be seated?" She looked at me, apparently annoyed that I had interrupted her chat, and led me to a table. Another minute passed before I got the menu. The morose waitress took at least five minutes to take my order. No greeting, no smile. I got my food. She didn't check back with me or refill my water. I paid the check, leaving only two bucks tip on a $13.00 bill. No goodbyes, no "thank you for coming." A very unpleasant experience. On food alone, I'd have given 4 stars. My girlfriend told me about this place since I'm not from around the area. This place has great food and me and my girlfriend eat there at least once every two weeks. Plus they have a dietary section where no corn starch was used!! Haven't seen that in any other place I've been too. This has to be the best kept secret in Kingston. First, the sign on the restaurant reads KINGs WOK, even though the place is actually Kingston Wok. The easy way to find it is just to look for the Burlington Coat Factory and Staples mall. Yes it is amazing food tucked into a strip mall. It is nominally Chinese, but the cook offers lots of Pan Asian treats. There is also a full sushi bar. The food is excellent, fresh ingredients, and perhaps the best fried pork dumplings ever. The service is polite and efficient, the ambiance is great, not fancy ... its a Chinese restaurant! Lunch specials for $6.50 - less than a lousy burger at all of the nearby junk chains. 6 fresh home made gyoza, five bucks. If you are anywhere near those shopping malls, try this place. I appreciate that everyone has a different set of guidelines for what makes a place "good", "worthwhile" etc. This place has not met mine. We stopped for a late lunch during our slow drive home. My husband is a devotee of Chinese food and asks to go anywhere we have never been. This made it onto his to do list for our trip. I stuck with our shared order of cold sesame noodles and some beef fried rice. My husband had his usual General Tso's Chicken dish. I tried his egg roll, which was alright, but not special. My rice was ok, but not delicious or spectacular. Our only confusion was that instead of a sauce, the chicken was quite completely SLATHERED in a syrup. An honest to goodness SYRUP. It had all the properties and appearance of maple syrup, but with a different taste. Adding to the weird, the server placed the egg roll UNDER the leftover rice/chicken/syrup mix inside the take away container...??? By the time we got home (3-4 hours later) the natural absorption of the egg roll had been given so much time to sit like that, it had taken up almost all the syrup. Uneven, but some choices are tasty. I love the soups, their broth is outstandingly tasty. Chicken with broccoli was good, as well as the shezuan beef. On the other hand, the Thai dishes I've had there have been pretty bad, way too sweet and more like Chinese imitations of Thai. I haven't tried any of the Japanese dishes. After being greeted by a friendly woman, we were sat and the delicious dinner started. Terrific food, great service! Not a sushi eater, but a visiting well-traveled co-worker ate there every night for two weeks and asked for some special sushi. Decided to try this place out after finding out you can sit here. I got sushi as usually and it was really good. Although I felt like the duck sauce they served with the fried noodles was bad. Also the friend noodles were cooked a little to long. My unsweetened iced tea wasn't that great either. My boyfriend got sesame chicken and he wasn't that impressed. The chinese food here would get 5 stars- the sushi is not great though. From looking at the restaurant from the outside you would never think the food is as good as it is. I worked in a "fancy" chinese restaurant (Mill House Panda) for years and am very picky about chinese food. This place is excellent. Food is fresh, always uses white-meat chicken and the wonton soup broth is actual broth-nothing out of a can. Would definitely recommend the wonton soup, steamed vegetable dumplings and garlic chicken. The restaurant itself is also a nice place to go out to eat, a comfortable atmosphere and complimentary tea and fried noodles. Also try the lychee martini with a frozen lychee nut! The takeout was repulsive. How do you screw up chicken with broccoli? Well, to start with, there was only 2 thin and overcooked slices of chicken, the rest was all broccoli, for an entree order (not the combo special mind you). Then to top it off, the broccoli - and there was a lot of this, was soggy and overcooked (not crunchy and fresh). A separate order of Shrimp fried rice was equally gross - the rice wasn't even separated, but stuck together, and the shrimp was stale. Weird experience. Food was very good and served very fast. But the staff rushed you so bad it ruined the experience. Wanted my order every 15 seconds without even being able to read the menu yet. And halfway through eating still clearly have food on our plate and there asking if we're done and trying to take the plate . VERY UNHAPPY LONG TIME CUSTOMER One star is for the service not the food. Kingston Wok was my families favorite chinese food in the area. We order dinner from this establishment very frequently. Generally we are ordering for a family of 5(which tends to be pretty pricy), but this night was only for 2. We placed an order for 2 sesame chicken plates and received 2 sweet and sour chicken plates. This was a little upsetting to begin with, but we are understanding people and know that mistakes do happen. We called the resturant to tell them the error that was made and was told to come in to pick up the correct order. We received a call back from the resturants owner just a few moments later saying that they weren't going to give us the 2 sesame chicken orders we had placed. That they would only give us one. She then proceeded to argue that it wasnt her error it was ours. So we stated that it wouldn't make sense for us to order what she had thought because neither of us like it. She proceeded to argue that it wasn't her error, it was ours and she would not be correcting the mistake. She stated that she repeated the order back to us and we had agreed. I am sure that everyone, including her,understands there is a language barrier(obviously since she got our order wrong). She tried to tell us that she appreciated our business but she would only give one of the 2 mistakes. We made her aware that we order from her resturaunt frequently and she would be losing a customer and she still said she would not be correcting the order. In other words this owner would rather lose a long term customer that spends a great deal of money at her establishment than admitting that she was wrong and correct the mistake by making us what we wanted in the first place in which prob amounted to about $5.00 of her cost. I feel compelled to write a review based on my recent experience. We frequented Kingston Wok and got to know the owner pretty well; she always spent time talking with us, discussing our kids and we would discuss her daughter. She was considered more than just an acquaintance. We were devastated when she sold the restaurant (a little hyperbolic), but continued to go. We soon stopped as it just wasn't the same, the quality seemed to go downhill. Fast forward about six months... My wife just brought home our usual order and I was pleasantly surprised, it was very good. I'm hopeful that they've gotten back on track. We will definitely be back. read more
