This is our fave restaurant in Vancouver! The Wagyu and Kobe beef on hot stones are what dreams are made of! They have wonderful drinks as well like the mango lychee soda. Service is attentive and ambiance feels like you stepped into a local's spot in Tokyo. Def make reservations. They get packed, cheers!

A whole lot of options here so we'll see how helpful I can be with writing a review. They serve a course menu which is nice and cut out for all you decision paralysis people. We enjoyed the beef carpaccio, yellowtail croquet, miso uni udon, miso black cod, and cheese ice cream that made up the course menu. Portions were good and flavors robust, what more do you need? Oh, for a party of four, quite a bit more. We tried the tomato kimchi which is more like a spiced tomato, so don't expect the fermented spiciness of korean kimchi. Tan tan noodle was pretty standard, can't say it's mindblowing, but a nice take on it! I love myself beef tongue, so evidently I loved cooking it on a stone grill (which is quite literally a heated up stone). Pressed salmon sushi was a unique take with flavors I haven't really considered before for salmon. Make a reservation as this place is crowded even on weekdays. You won't regret eating here though!

Ambiance - casual, relaxed, can accommodate small to large parties, love the small details of this restaurant (drinking glass, napkins, etc.) Service - exceptional, servers were nice and friendly, food came out at a good pace Food - fish quality was great, uni miso udon was more on the saltier side but udon was cooked to perfection, our famous almond tofu is a must get!

I really enjoy dining here; I've been here 3x in the past 10 months. Delicious food, good service, and a very chill atmosphere. The past few times I've visited with no reso, a handful of tables were still available for walk-ins. ** are repeat orders. Food is almost always a hit. I'd love to come try more teishoku / lunch bowl items. ** uni miso udon - best combo. we asked for a second spoon to lick off the remaining sauce. ** assorted sashimi - yummy. scallop is sweeet, bluefin is meltyy. hamachi is perfect texture just how I like it. quality has been there without fail on my visits. never fishy. ** corn ribs - deep fry aroma is lovely, always sweet and flavourful. my most recent visit, it seems they were heavy handed on the sauce so it was unfortunately a little saltier than usual. * beef croquettes - liked these a lot, tender filling, beefy taste. * uni ramen - seems to be off their menu, or may have been seasonal back in Oct 2025. too strong in taste but not much of an uni flavour I could pinpoint. good toppings though. * desserts - very fun, no notes. Highly recommend checking out Kingyo.

This was a different sort of Japanese restaurant than we've been to (more izakaya than sushi though they had both), and it was incredible! Fresh food, excellent quality, good portion size. Service was kind and quick. Interior was cozy and Japanese themed. We'd absolutely come back. The salmon sashimi was SO GOOD. They clearly take great pride in their food - lovely presentation, high quality, nice atmosphere.

I was in Vancouver for the day and had heard so many great things about this place, so I came in with pretty high expectations. We arrived around 2 PM for our reservation and were greeted warmly right away, which made for a great first impression. The restaurant itself is beautiful. The bamboo divider running through the middle of the space gave it a cozy, modern Japanese-inspired feel, and the overall atmosphere was probably my favorite part of the experience. As for the food, unfortunately it didn't quite live up to the hype for me. I ordered the seafood sizzler bowl, and while it wasn't bad by any means, it felt underwhelming for the price. The bowl was mostly rice, with a few small prawns, tiny scallops, a little roe, and some crab mixed in. I was expecting something more seafood-forward, so it ended up feeling more like a deconstructed fried rice than the premium dish I had envisioned. Same with the unagi bowl, couple small pieces of unagi cut up... The appetizers were actually the highlight of the meal and ended up being more memorable than my main course. I kept waiting for a dish to really wow me, but nothing stood out enough to make me crave a return visit. Maybe I just ordered the wrong items, because I know this place has plenty of fans. Overall, I'm glad I tried it, but based on this visit, I don't see myself making a special trip back.

Best experience ever!!! We had an early birthday celebration here. Everything was on point! The service was fast, friendly, everyone checked on us so often, well taken care of. Food was amazing, the sashimi basically melt in my mouth. Udon was so creamy and tasty. Drinks are creative and good. They even offered a panna cotta for my birthday

Came here for dinner and had a great meal here We made a reservation beforehand because we heard the wait time can get pretty long. All the food was delicious, and fish tasted really fresh. We especially liked the calamari and karaage here, but all the dishes were top notch. Service was friendly and attentive as well

Wow! I have heard a lot about this spot but I would definitely say the praise is deserved after coming here for lunch. Managed to get one of their limited sets that day and was so amazed by the selection - you even get to choose the main dishes, and we opted for sashimi and steak. So delicious! Got a couple appys to share as well, and the salmon tartare was definitely the highlight with the delicious sockeye salmon. The hot stone was a fun experience as well! The curry pork katsu was great as well - the curry had delicious sweet onions that brought a wonderful balance to the dish. Great service, beautiful decor, I will be back!

Had to follow up here with a new review as I came with my wife and they had the amazing bento box special - which they only have 12 of in a single day! Wow. I always love this place as the quality of all their dishes is very special and the service is excellent too. So what's in the bento today? Special lunch Bento - in order from top left: tataki, chicken breast, Karaage, spinach, eel wit tofu, hamachi, 2nd row: seafood uke, pork belly, shrimp Ebi, salmon tartare, cucumber, Brussels sprouts - I also got sashimi rice bowl and black cod. The sashimi was good, it came with ikura as well which I love. The black cod is heavenly. So smooth and tasty, the sauce on it really works well and its just grilled perfectly. - the Brussel sprouts and shrimp Ebi were good. - the salmon tartare was awesome. Great flavour. - the other seafood sashimi like sides were all really tasty - the Karaage is very tasty but not crispy - the only one that was just so so was chicken breast. Definitely worth coming in for the lunch bento.

This place is such a good find! We found out about it from Tiktok and wanted to try it while visiting Vancouver. The North American Wagyu beef hot stone comes with I believe 8 pieces of meat. I ordered a bowl of rice to eat on the side with it and was pretty full once I finished everything. The fried corn was a bit salty but it's very good. The salmon was also very tasty. The staff is so friendly! Overall excellent place and truly a must try if you're visiting Vancouver and enjoy salmon or Wagyu!

This meal spoiled me with every bite, the colorful seafood bowl was wonderfully fresh, while the tender steak was simply irresistible. My taste buds are already begging for more, so I'll have to come back someday and treat myself all over again.

This was my first time at this Japanese restaurant, and the atmosphere and food were fantastic! The prices were reasonable, and the service was incredibly warm and friendly. I highly recommend it! I'll definitely come back next time and bring my friends to try other dishes on the menu.

It's located literally directly above Sip, if that helps. For food, our host had an appetizer platter made. It was mediocre at best. The vegetables were all soggy. Somewhat disappointing. I had the bartender mix up a "strong drink". It was a shot of JD mixed with something out a green mystery bottle. Hopefully it wasn't antifreeze. Came to $4.50. Not bad! My biggest problem (though this is not the only place guilty of this) is that the music is too freaking loud. I couldn't hear anything, and had to shout in people's ears. Yes there's a DJ there (and he's quite good, hello Snoop Dogg, blast from the past), but seriously, please turn it down a notch. The other thing I didn't like is that the interior is quite plain. Yes, it's supposed to look like a refinery, but putting 500 glass jars filled with random food items on the shelves on the wall doesn't cut it. It makes the place look like a 1800s supermarket instead. This place needs some help in the branding department. Overall the experience was okay, but it was nothing memorable at all. There are better places in town.

Published on Main - Vancouver, BC…read more We chose Published on Main for dinner because it's one of the participating restaurants where we could use our Amex Platinum dining credit. Since it's also a Michelin-starred restaurant, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to finally experience it. Our dinner lineup was: Aebleskiver Milk Bun Belgian Endive Dungeness Crab GBP Gnocchi BBQ Beef Striploin Most of the dishes are designed for sharing, with the exception of the Aebleskiver, which is served individually, so we ordered two. It's a round, savoury dough with herbs and pine nuts, topped with Kaluga caviar. The dough itself was delicious, but the caviar wasn't quite to my taste. I prefer caviar with that distinct salty, creamy and buttery flavour, while I found this particular Kaluga very mild and almost tasteless. Everything else, however, was fabulous. Dungeness Crab - My absolute favourite of the evening. Beautifully executed and packed with flavour. Belgian Endive - A very close second and probably one of the biggest surprises of the meal. Who knew endive could be this memorable? BBQ Beef Striploin - The Michelin-worthy dish for me. Beautifully prepared and a great way to finish our savoury courses. The Milk Bun and GBP Gnocchi were also excellent and rounded out the meal nicely. The atmosphere is polished but not overly formal--I'd describe it as business casual. Most guests were dressed accordingly; you could probably count on one hand the number who weren't. Despite the restaurant being busy, I didn't find it loud at all. We could comfortably chat and hear each other throughout dinner, which I really appreciated. Service was cordial, professional and knowledgeable. Each dish was presented with a clear description, adding to the overall dining experience without making it feel overly ceremonial. Overall, Published on Main lived up to its reputation. With the exception of the caviar not being to my personal taste, we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. The Dungeness Crab alone is something I would happily return for. Definitely a restaurant I would recommend to friends and family--especially for a special occasion or if you're looking to put that Amex Platinum dining credit to very good use!

The servers that brought us our food were great at explaining each dish. The burrata was smooth and creamy. The focaccia that came with it, was huge and had a nice flavor to it. The candied pine nuts and cherry toppings were a really nice addition to the dish. The beef tar tar was tasty and slightly acidic. We had the Elk served rare, and it was delicous, but I didn't liked the cubed pieces. The stuffed pappardelle was soo good. I liked the hint of lemon, as it really elevated the dish. The duck with beet sauce was so nice. The duck had a nice crispy skin. The beets were one of my favorites. They were slightly acidic and sweet. The summer beans were very smooth and not like previous bean dishes that I have tried. The milk buns with butter didn't have much flavor, but the bun itself was nice and fluffy. The Octopus' sauce was so good and the Octopus itself was tender. I found the Maitake a bit too salty for me, but otherwise it was enjoyable. The Lambchetta was our least favorite dish of the night. It was a touch salty and had a hint of hoisin to it. The strawberry mille flavors were good, but the puff was a bit dry. The strawberry gelato was my favorite dessert. The gellee was nice as well. Walk through the forest dessert sounded interesting, but didn't hit the spot. I didn't really enjoy the mushroom flavor. It reminded me of Chinese herbal medicine. The coffee flavor wasn't bad. Our server was great at advising when she didn't think one of the desserts would be good to share as a table. This restaurant would be great for a celebration or date night. 4.5 stars

One of the best parts is the ever-changing menu of daily specials alongside the regular menu, so there's always something new to try while still coming back to your favorites. This visit we ordered the shrimp garlic fried rice, Agedashi Nasu, Grilled Squid with Garlic Mayo, and an assortment of sashimi. The shrimp garlic fried rice is an absolute must every time. It's packed with flavor, perfectly seasoned, and somehow manages to be comforting without feeling too heavy. It is a large dish and can easily be shared by 3-4, depending on what else you order. We also love the Agedashi Nasu here with melt-in-your-mouth eggplant wrapped in a light, delicate coating that soaks up the savory broth. Service is always quick and organized, even when the restaurant is busy. Dishes arrive as they're ready, making it easy to share everything around the table, which is exactly how an izakaya experience should feel. If it's your first visit, don't skip the shrimp garlic fried rice, and make sure to check out the daily specials before ordering. But in other parts of the world the meal is what's important and so is a quick turn around. Guu with Garlic reminded me a lot of the Izakaya restaurants I found under the train lines of Tokyo in many ways, including the amount of time it felt right to stay. The food came out quick, the servers took orders quicker, and the alcohol came out chilled and as nice contrast to the hot food. Looking around and you see the hand written menu on blackboard surfaces on the walls and this feeling of authenticity. The heat of the flames from the kitchen can be felt and seen if you sit at the bar. And the flavors just hit all the right notes. Starting with appetizers, a section izakayas shine at, the first dish we got was their scallop and mayo pizza. With a crispy crunch on the bottom and crust, this reminds you of the flavors of a baked volcano roll or scallop roll you can find in almost any North American sushi restaurant. Just like that dish, it's important to eat it while it's still hot so it doesn't get gross and 느끼 에. Then came the yellowtail tuna "tempura" pieces. Thick pieces of yellowtail tuna flash fried for just the right crisp on the outside with slight pink of the fish inside. It is meaty without being oily or fatty. Great bite. The beef tongue after was interesting. From the color of the sauce it accompanies it you would think it would be heavy in flavor but it is actually light and citrusy. A good cut into the richer tones of the beef tongue. The yaki udon was one of the best I ever had. It was smokey without being overpowering. The beef was thin and tender and balanced well with the mushrooms it also came with. The udon noodles stayed bouncy and chewy which I didn't expect from being grilled. Very tasty and highly recommend this dish. For our final bite we shared a hot stone bowl of their pork and cabbage rice. With the hot stone bowl constantly cooking even after this dish arrived it was imperative to stir the ingredients together constantly for the first two minutes. It allowed for the runny egg to meld with the rice and the crispy texture of some ingredients was a nice bonus. All in all, I loved eating here and if my appetite was bigger I would've tried more on their menu. A solid place to eat with a great atmosphere, if you're looking for delicious food that won't take too much of your time but still lingers in your memories you have to check out Guu with Garlic.

The cozy converted house was full but not loud with dim lighting and close‑set tables for an almost home‑dinner vibe. From my visit, we shared three standout plates. The alcachofas con jamón paired confit baby artichokes with roasted onion and jamón Ibérico. It was a good balance of textures and classic Spanish seasoning. The ensalada de ajo blanco con tomates asados y atún semicurado brought a creamier, richer profile: silky almond‑garlic dressing on fire‑roasted tomatoes with chunks of semi‑cured tuna and a drizzle of ash oil that added a nice aromatic note. The arroz negro arrived with seafood mixed into deeply flavoured squid‑ink rice; it was hot, savoury, and rich, perfect with a squeeze of lemon and garlicky aioli. Service was a definite high point! It was warm, knowledgeable, and paced so we weren't rushed. Portions were generous enough for sharing among two, especially with the more substantial rice dish in play. That said, the overall meal trended toward the rich and dense, so pairing with a couple of the lighter salads or crisp wines next time would help round things out. Would recommend for for date nights, small groups, or anyone curious about Spanish flavours. Lighter eaters might want to mix in a salad or a vegetable forward plate to balance the richer offerings.

The warm hospitality extends beyond the friendly staff and into the smaller details, like complimentary feminine products, neatly folded toilet paper, and mouthwash available in the restrooms. These thoughtful touches make it clear that someone has paid attention to the experience from start to finish. The "Treasure Box," priced at $58.00, is certainly steep, but the quality of the ingredients is apparent. Unfortunately, the presentation and selection felt somewhat scattered. Everything arrives chilled, and the assortment seemed almost deliberately random: chopped abalone, duck breast ham, a single cherry tomato with salad dressing, a lucky cat-shaped pastry topped with frosting, and a slippery grapefruit slice. Individually, the ingredients were interesting, but together they created something that felt more like a Picasso painting than a carefully composed meal. There was plenty of colour and personality, but not quite enough harmony between the elements. Yet there is clearly something about the Treasure Box that captures people's imagination. Only 10 boxes are available each day, and they reportedly sell out within minutes of opening. Beneath the nine treasures is a chirashi bowl featuring cubed tuna, salmon, and clam resting on a relatively thin layer of sushi rice. Visually, it is appealing, but the rice and fish combination itself felt fairly ordinary compared with the more extravagant ingredients above. The real surprise was the fish-flavoured soy sauce. Savoury, distinctive, and packed with character, it added an extra dimension to the chirashi and was easily one of my favourite components. It was the kind of sauce that makes you immediately think about how you could recreate something similar at home. My dining companion opted for the "Emperor" seafood bowl, and this felt like the stronger choice in terms of value, although at $70.00, it is certainly still an indulgence. The bowl is packed with an impressive assortment of exceptionally fresh sashimi-style seafood: salmon, freshly flown-in Hokkaido uni, lobster tail, abalone, sea bream, bluefin toro, yellowtail, akami, and ikura, all arranged over a thin bed of sushi rice. This bowl felt much more cohesive. Each piece brought its own texture and character, from the rich, buttery toro to the delicate sweetness of the uni and the clean freshness of the salmon. The lobster and abalone added another level of luxury, while the ikura provided little bursts of briny flavour throughout. It is the kind of bowl where the quality of the seafood becomes the main event, and thankfully, the ingredients are fresh enough to carry it. Overall, Toyokan Bowl excels at creating an experience that is visually memorable and full of personality. The retro bowling-inspired setting is charming, the service is genuinely friendly, and the seafood is exceptionally fresh. Even when some of the combinations in the Treasure Box don't quite make sense together, there is something exciting about a restaurant willing to experiment and dream up unusual creations. It will be interesting to see what the team comes up with next. One notable caveat is the restaurant's cash policy. While cash is accepted, we were advised that they are unable to provide change. That felt surprisingly off-putting, particularly because so much attention has clearly gone into the finer details elsewhere. Thoughtful touches throughout the restaurant make the lack of change feel like an unusual inconsistency. Still, Toyokan Bowl is a place that embraces spectacle, nostalgia, and exceptionally fresh seafood. Sometimes the combinations work beautifully, sometimes they feel a little more like culinary experimentation, but there is always something interesting waiting to be discovered.
