You might not expect some of the best calamari you'll ever have to be at an upscale Indian restaurant but here comes Kiran's. This review is solely for Kiran's afternoon tea experience. Let's get the bad stuff out of the way first: we had bad service. I could've easily given this place 4 or 5 stars as I enjoyed the food and the tea, but the service made it impossible. Unlike other tables, we were never offered refills on any of the tea. We never had waiters coming by to check in and see if we needed anything - like we saw at our surrounding tables. To be fair, we weren't completely ignored as we had a waiter come by twice during the 3 hours there to refill our waters. Otherwise, we only saw the waiters when it came time to serve the next plate or tea. Perhaps we didn't fit Kiran's targeted customer audience? Whatever the reason, Kiran's could at least try and pretend to care about their customers equally. Very disappointing. Phew. Now onto the good stuff! While the inequality of service cast a cloud on the experience, I did overall enjoy my afternoon tea at Kiran's. The tea: I loved all 3 teas. We had masala chai, darjeeling, and earl gray. If I had to pick my favorite of the 3, I'd go with the chai! I'm usually not a fan of chai because it's either too sweet or the spice flavor is too strong for my preference. But Kiran's masala chai was perfectly done. This was the only tea served with some cream and sugar already added, and I found I didn't need to tweak it at all. Perfection. (Would've loved a refill on this one... but as discussed above, that didn't happen.) The food: the samosa was a delicious starter - I only wish we got more than one! I could've done with a whole bowl of the fig chutney it was served with. My favorite was definitely the plate of tea sandwiches. The plate also came with a vindaloo deviled egg and some fantastically spiced plaintain chips. I loved loved loved the Indian flavors everything had! It all worked beautifully. The warm cranberry and orange scone was perfect - not dry at all, ridiculously moist and flavorful, and served w/ tasty lemon curd, jam, and clotted cream. The desserts were a little underwhelming to me. While the assortment of petit fours were overall tasty, many of the offerings were simply too sweet for me to take more than a couple bites of. Parking is very convenient here. Kiran's is located in a big building home to other restaurants and several offices for various companies.You can snag a street spot on either side of the building, use the valet service, or simply self park in the building's garage. First two hours are free if you park in the garage as the restaurant comes around near the end of the tea service to provide everyone with a validation ticket to use when exiting. You can access the garage from Richmond Ave. or, if you miss it like I did on the first pass, circle around to the back of the building for the other entrance! The quality and amount of food made the tea experience at Kiran's completely worth the price point. We did have to make reservations ahead of time, but I think we were able to make it in with a few days notice. Minus my one big complaint above, I think Kiran's is a good choice if you're looking for an afternoon tea spot. The tea and food are certainly worth trying. To my fellow young-adults-below-30, I'd still recommend this place but with a caveat: if your group doesn't look like you all reside in River Oaks, brace yourself for a similar service experience to mine. read more

Very upscale resteraunt and great quality Indian cusine but unfortunately the food wasn't accompanied with great service and I didn't have an overall outstanding experience that makes me want to come back to try more of the amazing food. I felt a sense of disconnection and misalignment with my waiter and the place wasn't as welcoming as I Hope to see in resteraunts. I just feel like food that is pricey and well-thought our like Chef Kiran's food should be served and presented in a passionate way, which I didn't experience that night. I'm so glad that Kiran's offers afternoon tea. Wish there were chaat items though. I was a little disappointed that they didn't ask us if we wanted the veg or non veg options and just started us off with non veg. The menu on the table was veg and so I was taken aback. They must have been cooking in old cooking oil and weren't cooked all the way. I be better off eating the frozen one from Walmart. Our entrees came out at 35 minutes of our arrival. The chicken tikka Masala was bland and tasteless as the vindaloo. The rice we received was crunchy and uncooked on one side of the tray. We demanded a refund since nothing went well in our meals or service. We received 50% discount. We will not be coming back and will be reporting to the BBB - Better Business Bureau. read more

This is our first time to the establishment. The staff seemed confused and overwhelmed at all times. My family and I reserved a table for afternoon high tea at 1:45pm. The menu is basic, wild mushrooms, finger sandwiches, black tea and Lukewarm chai tea. It was 30 mins before the waiter attended to us, after being seated by the hostess. It went downhill from there. Took over an hour or longer for water and milk shakes for the kids. We spent 3 hours eating super market cookies and black tea - for $216. Just a frustrating experience looking for good Indian food inside the Loop. $24 for chicken tikka masala where the chicken is dry and the sauce is harsh and one-note as if from a supermarket bottle rather than the complex layering of flavors over moist marinated chicken at a good Indian restaurant. Like, if you have to have Indian food, and you have to have nice tablecloths and dishware and fancy cocktails and presentation, I suppose this place is ok, though you'd still be better off being overdressed at the more casual Pondicheri. But there just are so many other better options if you only want one of those two things. Tried a few other dishes to see if creativity elsewhere made up for not being able to hit the slow-pitched softball, but, no. A $16 cod dish was oily and uninteresting, for example. This is by far the best Indian restaurant in the loop. I love the rosemary and goat cheese nan both as an app and with my meal. They seem to use the best ingredients and cook them to perfection. I would consider this a fine dinning experience. They make a great cocktails and all the staff members are friendly and polite. If you are new to Indian food this is where I would/did start. *Beware, you will get spoiled as no others come close in comparison. I never thought I'd like Indian food, but this place changed my mind and now I crave it! They have been around forever and I can definitely tell why. I went to Kiran's on October 26th 2024 around 8:30 pm. The only thing positive I can say about the experience this time I visited was the waiter, he was very friendly, positive, and funny; but unfortunately his friendliness does not outweigh the negatives of my experience. I ordered a dirty martini, the chicken tikka masala, a side of rice and naan. First, my martini tasted and look absent of olive juice, so I requested some more olive juice; after the addition it was good. Second, the chicken in the tikka was very dry; that being said, the flavor was as expected a perfect amount of heat while maintaining an authentic tikka masala flavor. The rice and naan were good. My major issue arises with my leftovers; I ate maybe half of my food when I was there expecting to have some for later, 3/6 pieces of naan, less than half the rice, and maybe 5 pieces of chicken from my tikka masala. When I looked at my leftovers when I got home I noticed there was significantly less tikka in the container than what I left in my bowl before it was packaged; additionally my other 3 pieces of naan did not make it into my bag; very unfortunate. The rice was packaged up fine, but it's just rice. I really enjoyed Kiran's before this visit, but when I'm spending $50 to eat chicken tikka I want all my leftovers. read more

We are at the previous Kiran's location a year or so ago. We were really happy with our experience, but we also had the chance to meet Chef Kiran and we were smitten. She was so friendly and it happened to be the night of her appearance on Beat Bobby Flay. That added a level of excitement to our evening at the restaurant! We came to Kiran's new location for my fiancé's birthday. We both started out with cocktails- I had the strawberry special cocktail and my fiancé had the "Arron" cocktail. We both really enjoyed them and would recommend. For appetizers we had the soup flight (which we loved from the previous location) and crab & corn samosas. The crab in the samosas was very fresh and delicious. For our entrees- I had the seafood curry. I was expecting it be server a little differently. It seemed more of like a seafood tikka Masala. I still loved it just not what I was expecting. My fiancé had the venison. It was cooked to perfection and melted in your mouth. He loved it! We had a seasonal peach dessert, deconstructed peach cobbler. It reminded me of fall with the cinnamon flavors, we ate it all up to say the least. The restaurant vibe is very cool. Very high ceilings and modern decor. One tip/ don't sit at the two top table that connects the bar to the main restaurant area. There is a private room there and it was incredibly distracting that people kept walking back and forth through there and opening the door. Overall- would recommend and would come back. I had the best venison dish of my life at Kiran's! The Chilean sea bass is also fantastic. Now that I've had a few dishes at the new location, I had to write a review. It was my first time visiting the new Richmond location, but I had been to their old location many times. The new spot is ultra-posh and the Indian decorations are much more subtle. There was a 15+ person party for a 13 year old to demonstrate the restaurant's family friendliness, but all other tables were occupied by well dressed adults mostly wearing business casual. I had a self-created surf and turf meal with a crab cake, the venison chef's special, and some Chilean sea bass. The crab cake was $18 and of excellent quality (8.7/10). And, yes, I know my crab cakes from a life-long quest about crab cakes. That said, if you want to lower the bill, this is what I would cut. The pan-seared venison was the chef's special ($33) and the star of the show. (12/10) Truly delicious and, yes, the best I've ever had. Perfectly cooked, and I mean perfectly. It was served with flawless whipped mash potatoes (10/10) and glazed carrots (9/10), but it was the venison that amazed. The Chilean sea bass (10/10) was a thicker, higher quality cut than even most good places give you and with a more generous than usual portion size to boot. Also flawlessly prepared and served with rice and asparagus when you get the full $40 plate. Service was near-perfect (one slight wait on a refill), but most would consider it more than sufficient. My waiter told me about the venison dish and he loved the dish himself, so he's golden in my book. A foodie waiter and a restaurant that allows the waiters the experience of the food is a powerful combination. And the fountain Coke was just right. I hate when places don't have their soda game on point. This place is a little pricey, but from what I've experienced, Kiran's is one of the very best places in Houston right now, bar none. read more

I really looked forward to going here based on their exciting menu, but overall I'd say it was a mediocre experience. The restaurant décor and ambiance is nice. I got the Sadhya tasting menu and the rose martini. The martini was alright but a little too strong, and the rose flavor was really mild and there was no aroma. The first course-- rasam-- was a bit too spicy even for me. The vada was really good but I think they should give at least two for that amount of spicy rasam. Next I had the dosa, which was really good. It was crispy and light, which made it my favorite course. The main was dry and uninspired. The paneer and bell peppers were dry. It was essentially a deconstructed kabob but without chutney. It had a balsamic reduction which helped but it didn't work as well as a tradition chutney or other dip. In general it felt like the chef was trying to sound creative at the cost of taste. Finally, the desert was my least favorite. They ran out of the Shrikhand which I was really looking forward to. They didn't tell me when I ordered the tasting menu, which would have probably changed my mind. It's really important to communicate that when someone orders a prix fixe menu since they've obviously picked it assuming they like all the courses offered. The server suggested I try the rasmalai. It was a very sweet rasgola (not a rasmalai at all) on top of a dry hard cake, drizzled with a little bit of raasmalai cream. The cream tasted good but it wasn't enough to make the dry hard cake softer. They also didn't take the dessert off my bill, despite the fact that I barely ate any, and they didn't have the one I was expecting. The chai was really good, and the chocolate samosa was fine. Overall, i give it a 2 mostly because it didn't match up to its price point. The food was probably worse than most medium range Indian restaurants but for a higher price. read more

Despite being dressed for fine dining we were lead past the swanky front room through the still elegant 2nd room, the nice everyday dining room to the, right out if a airport hotel banquet room and sat amongst Gen Zers in tshirts and loud large parties, under a halogen spot light. And despite COVID still being a thing my seat was barely 3' from a group loud businessmen. After ordering our wine it took just under 30 minutes to actually get it in the glasses. WTH. We were told we could order things off the tasting menu a la carte. When the bill arrived we were charged for the entire tasting menu despite ordering only 1 course from it. I said that's unacceptable and was told, "well that's the way we have always done it." I said fine then you need to bring us the other 5 courses of the tasting menu now, at this point the kitchen was breaking down for the night so. The waiter left and after ten minutes came back and said because it was now an entree and a large portion of lobster it was charged at market price. Which somehow, magically was the same exact amount to the penny as the entire tasting menu! It's a Christmas in July miracle everybody! I said "no, I have no problem paying a higher price for an entree but at no point did you mention market price. And even at market price there's no way that much lobster would cost that much AND be the exact price of the tasting menu. Thus is wrong, get a manager." He went away the chef/owner came out apologized said it had more lobster than the tasting menu, blah blah blah market price blah blah. "Yes but exactly was it the same exact price as the tasting menu? Oh, and it actually says on the bill LOBSTER TASTING MENU, nothing about a la care," Well it'll be taken care of. read more

Made Christmas Day reservations for 6 of us. We love Kiran's and have been many times before. They called us 4 hours before our reservation to confirm I said yes we would be there only for her response to be "as a reminder the menu today is fixed" to which I replied ok that's fine and then she informed me it's $125 A PERSON. I was shocked NO WHERE on their website did it state that. I told her this and she told me I was mistaken, I've attached screen shots of the website not once does it state Christmas Day is $125 a person even for children. I told her this was not stated anywhere on the website and there's no Christmas Day menu on there, she then told me I was wrong to which I looked again and it's definitely not there (screen shots attached) I told her we would be canceling and how upset I was that it was too late to book anywhere else. I found this entire experience to be extremely frustrating, unprofessional and arrogant. I'm so disappointed as this was one of our favorite restaurants in Houston. However after ruining our Christmas Day I will never go back. Many restaurants I have been to in the past on holidays have a preset menu or some kind of stipulation that they present at the time of reservation. Inform your customer, do not wait till the day of to surprise them and ruin their plans. We will not be back. read more

Parking in the garage and quite a trek - the security guard kindly took us on a secret route. And parking is free. Superb service. All the food was wonderful. We had cocktails - some interesting choices - and then split 3 appetizers and 3 entrees. Actually a bit too much for 4. Top dishes were the butter chicken, stuffed naan, and lamb shank. My only quibble was pricing on the entrees - price point a bit high for the size of the dish. Also the 2 young men at the front could use some etiquette and hospitality training - or maybe "haughty" is the new trend.... We'll be back. Damages with tip was $280.
