We went to Kiran's afternoon tea on Sunday and had a quality experience. The ambience with a harp being played and the general atmosphere was relaxing. Having had a late night the evening before we skipped drinks and stuck to the tea. As with all good teas they do not need milk or lemon and theirs did not. The Kirans blend did have milk but this was a good balance to the termed and other spices. To the food the mushroom appetizer was first class as were the sandwiches. The petit fours were great but the scones were the star! So good with blackcurrant jam(jelly) and cream! All in all a fabulous experience. read more

Slightly disappointing experience... We booked a reservation for Saturday night for my girlfriends birthday hoping to have a nice dinner and celebrate. Upon arrival we were met with a little bit of an aggressive valet. I understand that it was busy and they were trying to get everyone through, but they felt a little aggravated in getting us out of my vehicle. we made our way to the restaurant and through the large beautiful front doors which seemed so welcoming, I really did love the front door. The hostesses welcomed us and ushered us to our table which had the most comfortable chairs you could have in a restaurant. some tables had little sofas which I was jealous of, but was still happy with my comfy chair. The kitchen was across the dining room where you could see the food being prepared in the tandoors and wood burning ovens. After a bit of a wait, which I will dismiss as the restaurant was busy, the waiter made his introduction, took our drink order and passed out menus. I am not one who enjoys the hounding of a waiter where they spend too much time at your table, excessively asks how everything is or the likes, but our waiter did not seem to care for our table and it felt like he was either going through the motions or just trying to get past us. It was not a good dining experience with this waiter. Anyways, for drinks we ordered the Jahangir Lassi and the Kir (an) Royale. The Lassi was wonderful, being smooth, light and refreshing. The Royale on the other hand was far too strong, tasting of rubbing alcohol and a hint of Lychee. I'm not much of a drinker, but that one wasn't good. For our starters we ordered the Scallops and wood fired oysters. The Scallops were beautiful cooked with a creamy, smokey succotash that I could eat on its own, but wouldn't because I definitely would want more scallops. The oysters were also so, so good. Never can you go wrong with butter, cheese and oysters, but then add the seasoning that they did and I am happy to order another dozen. For our mains we ordered the rack of lamb, a lamb shank, a korma, and a lasooni bread. Lots of lamb tonight. The rack of lamb was a pretty weak dish, being cooked to hell and dry. I don't recall being asked by the waiter how well done I would like it, but well, well done is not how I would have chosen. the rack came with a very sweet chutney which was a little to sweet. The Lamb shank was a star, fell off the bone, moist and tender, the sauce it bathed in was lovely, all around a good dish. The korma was a korma, always good and on par with any other Indian restaurant. The lasooni bread was a really nice bread, just really didn't have much flavor, but the bread was nice. We decided to pass on dessert as our meal was filling enough. I think by the end our bill was $250 before tip, which the tip left was very undeserved at about 20%, but its a nice place and I wont stiff a waiter. Once we returned to the valet to get my vehicle, the valet took my ticket and we paid by card which was nice. I really dislike that valet guy, he was a tool, really soured the end of the night to be honest. I tipped the actual person who brought us my vehicle, and we were off. All-in-all the food was pretty good, the atmosphere was nice, and the staff were not so welcoming. A little bit overpriced in my opinion as its competing with restaurants like Musaafer in value, but pretty ok for a date night, not a special occasion. Probably wont be back though. read more

Located near Levy Park on Richmond. This used to be a pizza place a year or two ago I believe. Free parking available behind the restaurant around Levy Park. There must be 2000 square feet of restaurant. The inside is unbelievably huge. When our party went in, there must've only been 6-10 people in the entire restaurant, not sure how they stay open unless it's packed every other time. The menu is trying to go for the upscale Indian angle. Some items don't seem very Indian so we tried to stick with more traditional looking items. We got lamb for apps (5/5 tender and tasty). The chaat was alright, nothing special (3/5). The dosa looked more impressive than it tasted (it was $28... 2/5). Mains were more staples that are recognized. Lamb vindaloo, chicken Tikka Masala, lamb khorma. These sauces were a little on the water side. The meat were straight up 1 inch chunks, which was a little odd. The sauces weren't fabulous either. I believe each dish was $20-30 and the portions were tiny. Overall, I don't think this is great value and if quantity is less, quality should be more, right? Didn't really feel quality was that much more and taste wasn't 2x or 10x better than food I've had at a much more affordable price point. read more

For some reason I hadn't made it to the "new" Kiran's before but I love the new building, decor and really everything about the space, particularly the beautiful and spacious bar area. The furniture is great and you have room to spread out and try all of the yummy dishes. We had some happy hour items and some regular bites and drinks. The happy hour hibiscus drink is delicious and beautiful. I loved the very buttery Chardonnay I had - just perfect. Food was all delicious too. I can't recall everything we ordered but the sliders and fries were tasty - I liked the paneer. The pakoras and samosa were yummy and filling. We also tried the beet tartar that was lovely and light. I loved that we were comfortable and didn't feel rushed at all. The happy hour is a great way to give it a try but my regulars say everything on the menu is good! Amazing Indian food in Houston, TX. While the prices are on the higher side, this a perfect spot for any special occasion. I came here with my boyfriend & his family to celebrate his graduation, and we had a great experience. For starters, we ordered the mango lassi (so so good) along with the Delhi chaat and sev batata poori - both were delicious, but the flavor of the Deli chaat was my favorite. As our entree, we decided to share the lamb korma, bengan bartha, and aloo mattar paneer with Kiran's naan and lachha paratha. The meal was incredible - I can't imagine any of these dishes having a better flavor. If I had to choose, my favorite was the bengan bartha as this was the best version of the dish I've ever had. I also really liked the lachha paratha and would for sure order that again. Our waiter was very friendly and made sure we were taken care of throughout the meal. My first experience at this place was horrible and I never wanted to go back to this money sink. I had to revisit as my friend decided to celebrate his birthday at this resturant. They no more validate the parking. With little to no parking you are bound to pay for the parking. We were in a group of 15. Service: it took a while to get the order. More than it takes for any resturant to serve a table of 15. Even then the food was misplaced and we had to figure out who ordered what. Food: Food was tasteless. Phew where to start! Had a lovely Monday night experience here and was honestly surprised at how much I enjoyed everything. Service: service was top! Before seating, we were taken care of at the bar before our whole party arrived. The bartender gave great drink recs and was so great to talk to. Once seated, our server Sage, took care of us efficiently and had great recs when we needed them. Food came out at a timely manner and sometimes the curries look alike but every dish was explained to us. Taste: The food surprised me. I remember coming to Kirans many maaaany years ago and thinking it was ok (mostly because I don't like Indian food 'fused' with anything). This time however, the food was quite authentic in my opinion. The vindaloo was delicious and spicy as it usually should be, the madras had a deep curry flavor, and the prawn was super flavorful. Overall the food was 5/5 for me, really impressed with it. Is it expensive for Indian food? You could argue yes. Unreasonable? No. Between the 9 of us we got 8 curries, 5 appetizers, a dessert and a few drinks and didn't break 100 per person. Quite reasonable and worth the money to be honest. This might not be the case in the event of a date or a small group so take that in mind. I would recommend this place for larger parties to get your moneys worth or as a special celebration dinner where you don't mind splurging. This is an upscale restaurant; reservations are recommended. I know this is Houston, and attire here tends to be casual, but leave your hats, flip flops, shorts, and athletic wear at home. This restaurant is geared more for adults. If you want to bring young children, you can make a reservation for 4pm to 5pm. Surprisingly, they allow dogs on the patio, so if you don't mind dining with dogs, that's an option. Personally, I'd rather dine with kids than dogs. The menu is extensive, and they have plenty of vegetarian options. I had the Daal Makhni and the biryani with vegetables. Both were good enough that I would return, but not amazing enough for me to order either one again. Nothing was spicy, so if you want some extra zing, you'll have to request it. Admittedly, I am a bit torn on the review score...wish we could give half points because I am teetering between a 3 and 4. I believe the food to be at a 4 or higher, however our overall experience left us feeling a bit meh afterwards. I came with a friend and we ordered lamb samosas to start, and then butter chicken and chicken vindaloo curries to share as the mains. Added on the rice, of course, and garlic naan and the goat cheese naan (waiter recommendation). As stated before, no issue with the food taste-wise, it was delicious. I suppose I expected a little more (pizzazz, wow, portion, something) given the price tag attached to it. Our waiter was very nice and attentive, service was at the right pacing. Ambiance is a nice evening out for a special occasion for sure. New as of January, according to our waiter, is that they no longer validate parking. Wish we had known this prior so we could have taken advantage of the complimentary valet instead of paying $5 each to park. My review is specifically for the AFTERNOON TEA service. I have been to Kiran's for tea on 3 occasions now and loved every visit. Kiran's serves an elevated "high tea" with a couple South-Asian touches, such as a curried chicken salad and the inclusion of Chai & Darjeeling teas. There is a live harpist playing throughout the service, and the ambiance is very elegant and calming. The afternoon tea menu is served in 3 different courses (as opposed to serving all the food at once on the tiered tower). Each course has a specific tea pairing - but you can also request refills of any of the teas during any course. Each time I visited, I found myself favoring a different tea, because they're all steeped so exactly & served at a perfect drinking temperature. Unlike the 3 consistent teas, the food menu changes slightly each season, apart from the 1st course mushroom tart, which is fantastic. Then we ordered the chicken jalferezi, bison kofta curry, and the chicken tikka masala. The rice that came on the side was amazing, it was buttery and soft. Perfection. Their waitstaff has top notch customer service too. There's plenty of parking in the garage. Don't forget to validate your parking with the hostess before you leave. It's Houston Restaurant Week(s) and yesterday we gave Kiran's a try for the first time. I'll start by saying that the food was probably worth 4-5 stars, but the service knocked them down to a 3. It was a Tuesday, but still quite busy and if I'm being honest the wait staff seemed a bit flustered by the crowd. Our waitress was very nice, but there were some mishaps with not receiving menus when we were seated and then we didn't receive the drink menu for some time after that. Once we got the drink menu, my friends tried to order a bottle of wine and after a while they were brought the wrong bottle and then later told their original selection wasn't in stock. They chose a second bottle and several minutes later were told again that it wasn't in stock. My friends ended up ordering cocktails instead. I wish the restaurant would have provided a more accurate wine list in the drink menu so that so much time wouldn't have been wasted. There was also quite a bit of time between the first course being cleared and the second course being served, but luckily we were in the company of friends and didn't mind much! The food itself was very good! On the HRW menu I started with an aloo samosa, then got Punjabi thali for the main, and a chocolate samosa w/ chai ice cream for dessert. I took home half my main, which made for very tasty lunch today. I am not sure I will return, but I'm glad I gave Kiran's a try. read more

Incredible--no regrets! The only thing more impressive than Kiran's food and decor is the impeccable service. We booked a reservation and included a note about our anniversary, and all of the staff made a point to mention our special day. Even Ms. Kiran came to our table and chatted with us for a few mins! Also, the general manager (Ms. Kiran's daughter) was able to accommodate our request to sit at the same table where we dined on wedding night. As an Indian-American, I have to be in a particular mood to seek out quote-unquote fancy Indian food, since it's just so hard to beat the home-cooked version or even the humble offerings in any old hole-in-the-wall in Houston's Little India. That being said, I've been meaning to check out the ritzy Kiran's for years and finally had occasion to do so recently. The space is huge with modern decor, an open dry kitchen of sorts where staff were hand-prepping naan, and dozens of photos of chef-owner Kiran Verma with celebrities. We had a late dinner reservation, for which we arrived ~10 mins late. We were told that some parties were taking longer than expected, so we had to wait an additional 15 mins in the lobby for a table, which was a little frustrating, especially given that the restaurant didn't appear to be at capacity. At least it smelled delicious. My overall impression of the food was it was not necessarily elevated or extravagant enough to justify the price point. You can get either get stuff that tastes just as good if not better and comes in much larger portions in cheaper establishments, or go to Musaafer, where at least the presentation and innovation (somewhat) matches the exorbitant cost. Don't get me wrong, some of the things we tried at Kiran's were very good and the quality of the premium ingredients comes through in certain dishes, but I think the ambiance, service, and wine selection are more compelling than the food itself. Delhi Chaat - a riff on a ubiquitous Indian street food that features potato, cashews, fruit, and other savory snackables tossed with a zesty seasoning and served over a crispy shell with yogurt and chutney. It was OK, but to charge $18 for a pretty standard chaat is borderline malpractice. Raj Katori - some soft, savory lentil fritters served with more of the same chaat from above. This was solid and better than the Delhi Chaat, since you get the same flavors with some additional variety. Lamb Rhogan Josh - a rich, earthy curry that was well-executed, but quite small in portion size. The meat was tender and silky, and the broth was rich, spicy, and aromatic. Aloo Palak - a spinach and potato preparation. Decent portion size (though again, you are paying $18 for home-style stewed vegetables...), but not especially flavorful and under-salted. Malai Kofta - spongy paneer-and-potato chunks submerged in a creamy, nutty, and tangy sauce. This was an excellent dish, complex in flavor and perfect in terms of texture. Try this veg-friendly item if you haven't before. Gulf Shrimp Biryani - I was not a fan of this take on the quintessential Indian mixed rice dish, as the balance tipped too heavily in the sweet direction with the copious raisins and craisins. I like it more buttery and savory. The shrimp were large but not particularly flavorful or succulent. Duck Two Ways - I only tried a bite, but it was possibly the juiciest duck I've ever had with delightfully crispy skin, though noticeably under-salted. Finally, I didn't find the naan to be all that special, despite the showmanship at the front of the restaurant. It was actually more tough and chewy than pillowy, and would've benefited from a brush of butter. I was worried that I would be underwhelmed by Kiran's, and my suspicion was confirmed with this recent visit. It is not that I don't think Indian food deserves the fine dining treatment -- the best meal of my life was at a two Michelin-starred Indian restaurant -- I just think that this warrants something more than serving regular Indian food in polished environs with wine service. Maybe next time, I will opt for their more non-traditional items to see if they can change my mind. read more

We actually made it on a Friday evening without a reservation and no wait time. The ambience of the restaurant was definitely elegant and good for a date night. The food selection also seemed great. But as someone who loves spicy food, I ordered something that was "spicy" but it was very very very mild. We got the paneer Karahi and chicken jalferezi, and neither were as spicy as expected. I also wish the paneer pieces were cut into smaller pieces. I am vegetarian but my friend is not. We ordered one onion naan and one mutton filled Naan (Gosht). I was pretty disappointed that they put both in the same container and they were touching. I didn't have time to wait to ask them to fix it so I ate it anyways but they should be a bit more considerate toward vegetarians.
