After hearing about this ghost kitchen sushi place, I had to try it. And I have to say (a bit sadly)...I wanted to like it more than I did. I ordered the combo (4 roll-pieces each of salmon, spicy tuna, and eel for $17) and the salmon nigiri/sashimi for $35. The salmon was kind of a let down. While it was fresh, it didn't taste like the best quality salmon. Just average. And some pieces were stringy/chewy. There were about 6-7 pieces each of nigiri and sashimi and they weren't small. The amount you get for the price is fair. I just wish the salmon was better, given that this dish was only salmon. Two stars. The combo was a bit better. There was a bit more variety, and the added cucumber and avocado helped. The pieces were huge. The rice itself tasted fine. There was too much of it, but there was still a decent amount of fish and veggies. Again, also fair for the price. Definitely quantity over quality. But for rolls, sometimes quantity over quality hits the spot. Three stars. This isn't restaurant sushi, it's sushi your friend makes. That doesn't have to be a bad thing, but this place still has some things to work out. Ordered via Doordash for pickup. It was ready in 30 minutes for pickup on a Sunday around 12:30pm. The pickup experience was my first at a food hall, I had to scan my doordash pickup screen to the kiosk and it opens up a locker door near me for me to retrieve the food. The ordering, check in and pick up process was confusing. my husband ordered from Amazing Katsu without any issues. so I thought the process would be similar. but that assumption proved wrong. The estimated time I received through text was 1 hour later from when I purchased in store. I could see my order on the not ready list with estimated time at 11minutes so after the time passed without seeing my order, I tried checking in on the self-service screens. the automated screen said it would be ready in one minute. so I waited again. I could see the estimated time on the larger TV screen inside continued to extended from 1 minute to 4 minute to 9 minutes. I asked the first Staff I saw what the actual wait time was and he said 20 more minutes. I asked to cancel it but he went to the back and brought this out right away. Sorry if this sounds snobby but I call it like it is. I'm disappointed by how the quality looks different than the order menu at this price and also some pieces appear unfinished without garnish. it was worth the gamble to try it once, but now I know this is the process, I wouldn't recommend to others. read more

I've been wanting to try them and decided to order them on UberEats. My partner and I shared the omakase 16 piece box and the salmon nigiri box which was plenty of food for us! Fresh cuts of fish especially the salmon. Boxes were nicely packaged and a lot of care for the presentation. The omakase was well worth the price for the quality of fish and flavors. Quantity of rice was well balanced with the cut of the fish and topping. The best part was their sushi rice though. I've never been a huge fan but the nigiri was so good and flavored. There were some tasty bites included in this omakase box. Some of the fish were a bit fishy and chewy but I really liked the yuzu truffle nigiri. I'm not sure which one it was but one of the white fish had a bone in it so it doesn't seem like they pay that great attention to cleaning and de-boning the fish. The sando and rolls in general were great, but a few issues with some rolls. The tempura shrimp in the tempura shrimp roll was cold and hard (overcooked) and we got a bone in the salmon roll. I really want to support small Mom and Pop places but this was a pretty awful sushi experience. Note that this review is not for the sandwiches but for the sushi. Perhaps this would've been different if it was earlier in the evening, but, the sushi quality was terrible; bad gas station sushi level. The rice was stale and not sushi rice no vinegar. The fish quality was absolutely terrible. My husband actually spit a rollback out. We ended up eating a few pieces to try and give it a shot, but then composted the rest and went and purchased sushi somewhere else instead. I am sad. I did not seem to have the experience of other people have had these reviews, but will not be trying this place for sushi again. read more

This place serves sushi bentos and Japanese sandos. I am pretty old and it took me a while to figure out how the pick up works. At first I thought it was a restaurant but all I found were auto body shops. Then I parked and found the place. A kind young man sitting in a chair patiently showed me how to release my order from a locker (put phone screen showing DoorDash order on scanner). The food was good! Bento was a bit better than the sandwich I ordered. To be fair, I have recently been sampling egg salad sandwiches around the Bay Area. When available, Newkirk's on Potrero in SF delivers an S tier egg salad sandwich experience. Kazu unfortunately could not compare. The best part about this food establishment is the price. It is difficult to find a high quality, filling lunch for $15. Kazu achieves this I imagine due to low overhead. It is definitely worth a visit. I would like to be able to order some of the fancier bentos I see in the photos for lunch. ok tried them a second time a week later (really wanted this to work) and it looks like they figured out their early delivery issues! i got the medium size omakase box, and honestly its kind of amazing at this price point. san mateo weirdly for a while has not had great higher end sushi take-out/delivery options, so im really happy there finally appears to be one. multiple pieces of uni, caviar, etc, is all pretty luxurious. this time it came pretty quickly. great job - will order again, and rooting for you guys! read more

Some of the yummiest Japanese food I've ever tried. Everything was so fresh and you could tell they were very thoughtful with the packaging. The unagi sandwich was so flavorful and my favorite of all. The mix box was spectacular with my favorite being the spicy roll. I can't wait to try all the other things on their menu! read more

Went by the San Mateo Food Mall ghost kitchen for the first time after wanting to try it for some time. Kazu Sushi and Sando just opened it looks like, and I was extremely impressed. I ordered the smaller omakase (the one with rolls too) as it seemed to offer all the variety of the larger one, plus the rolls. The whole experience was very positive (even for someone like me who is new to the experience) and the food from Kazy was top notch. I consider myself lucky to try them so soon after they open, and am happy to write them up here. They absolutely deserve it! This is a meal I would be extremely satisfied with at a very high end restaurant, and while you do lose a bit of the "omaskase experience" by not observing the preparation or interactions of the sushi master, the passion of the chef definitely comes out in the quality of the food. I appreciate a place like this that shares an experience at an accessible price that otherwise people may not be able to afford at a full service restaurant. The omaskase looked just as good, if not even better (if that's possible) than the photo when ordering, and I'm sure that the other items are wonderful too. Taste was spot on with beautiful marbling and high end preparation. Even the small details were looked after. I also appreciated the real leaves that lined the box and separated the wasabi, rows, etc, instead of the fake flimsy plastic leaves that can appear. They clearly have an eye for quality and show a great deal of pride in their offering. I will return. Very enthusiastic 5 stars, and keep up the fantastic work Kazu!!! read more

Saw the amazing reviews on yelp and had to try this place out. We got the omakase box, salmon box, California roll, mix box. The nigiri was delicious. With that said, you can usually tell the quality of a sushi restaurant by the attention paid to the rice. There was a lot of rice in the rolls and the rice was mushy (much more than expected), which was disappointing. If I really want nigiri, I would order again but would avoid rolls in the future. read more

This was the most amazing sushi I have ever had in the Bay Area!!! The rolls were huge and that fish was sooooo fresh and delicate. Each roll was packed individually and was meticulously cared for. The packaging was impressive the rolls were packed in these cute boxes with a mini fish soy sauce dispenser. I felt like I was eating at a fancy restaurant. Absolutely delicious!!! read more
