Came here for lunch and there was a $25 nigiri combo chef's choice which is such a good deal. The sushi portion is pretty small so it is enough for a small eater, but would probably need to double up for a hungry eater. The tuna lover roll and negotiate toro maki were just okay. The beef kushiyaki (skewers) were cooked well, very flavorful. Would recommend. The restaurant was pretty quiet on a Sunday around lunch time which is surprising. It was very quiet and service was decent.

Hakkai is a small restaurant in downtown San Carlos serving Japanese fusion dishes and sushi. The restaurant was surprisingly quiet and lacked customers even during peak lunch hours on Saturday. And after trying all the food, I understand why. Here's what we had: Steak Tartare: Very small portion, but it was the only dish that tasted okay. Mentaiko Udon: Dry, like very dry. The noodles were oily but somehow still lacked moisture. I think this dish would work much better with sauce rather than just oil. Sizzling Ribeye Beef: I was really looking forward to this dish, but the flavor was just... weird. It was overly sour and salty. Maybe it's just not my taste. Kamo Rosu (Pan-Fried Duck Breast with House Sauce and Mustard Seeds): Unfortunately, this dish missed as well. Duck meat had a strong odor that overpowered the seasonings, and I think it didn't seem to be prepared properly. To be honest, all dishes were expensive for the quality. None of them stood out enough to make me want to return. In fact, most were just disappointing. Staff were friendly tho. But based on this experience, I would not come back.

Friends took me here to celebrate my birthday on a Friday night. Our party of four sat at the bar near the sushi chef. The place was very clean and modern-looking. Since it was my first time here, my friend ordered for us because she is a regular. We started with several appetizers to share, including beef skewers, garlic shrimp, fried squid tentacles, garlic shishito peppers, fried eel, and beef tartare. All of the appetizers were delicious except for the beef tartare, which was a bit overcooked. Next, we had various nigiri, all of which were very tasty. As a woman, the cleanliness of the restroom is important to me, and I was pleased to find that it was very clean. There were a few parking spaces outside, so parking was not an issue. I will definitely come back to try other items on the menu. All of the staff, including the sushi chefs, were very nice and friendly.

First time here. 3.5 rounded up. Some interesting dishes. I liked the duck and salmon dishes, both were great. The vibe here is slightly night lounge-y, which was weird during a weekend lunch. I think maybe they could brighten it up a bit and turn down the dance beats during the day as it feels a little sad when there are two tables there in that vibe with a bit of sunlight streaming in. Service was all right, they did what was needed but weren't particularly friendly. Easy parking in the lot. Wouldn't mind coming back but wouldn't go out of my way.

3.5 stars Made reservations, but they couldn't seat until 30min after our reserved time. Music was overly loud. The fish was good, but sliced overly thin. Out of everything I ate, I liked the scallops I ordered. Hokkaido uni tasted a little fishy for me. Rib eye wasn't good quality, but the garlic and brussel sprouts were tasty. With so many options for sushi in Bay Area, not sure I'd return.

A hidden gem! While not on the main DT San Carlos strip, Hakkai is a top spot to grab some sushi. I've had the pleasure of eating here several times and the staff is incredible and makes an effort to get to know you. Gaslie is always fun to chat it up with and clink a beer with, and he also has great recommendations on the menu. The best treat, by far, was a personalized tasting menu by Chef Dixon (reserved for slow nights). The fish is top quality, the chefs are experts, and the ambiance is perfect to forget the bustle of the bay.

When our dining partners suggested Hakkai to check-out, I jumped at the chance! Where else offers a 7-pc nigiri plus hosomaki combo for $25? Upon arriving, the outside of the restaurant has a dark, nightclub feel to it. Inside was bright and trendy. The place was pretty packed but we had reservations so were seated right away. Three out of the four of us got the nigiri combo. We also ordered anago tempura, garlic shishito, beet salad, beef kushiyaki, karaage. To quench our thirsts, we ordered the fun sake flights. Service was excellent. The owner stopped by for a friendly chat and offered to take our photo for the wall. We politely declined. Overall, it was a good first experience. The pieces in the nigiri combo are quite small, so beware if you have a big appetite. The menu is not too extensive so set your expectations accordingly. Come here for some sake and small bites, but not for a full-on hearty meal.

Just tried Hakkai Nigiri Bar & Tapas and honestly, it's a great addition to the San Carlos sushi scene. The biggest highlight is the freshness of the fish--everything tasted clean and high quality, especially the nigiri. You can tell they put effort into presentation too; simple but very well executed. Their tapas-style dishes are a nice twist from a typical sushi spot--definitely worth trying a few to share. The vibe is more on the quiet, intimate side, which makes it a solid option for a date night or a relaxed dinner. Service was friendly, though timing can be a bit slow when it gets busy, so just don't go in expecting a super fast meal. Pricing feels reasonable for the quality, especially compared to other spots in the Bay Area. The sake selection is also a nice bonus if you're into that. Overall: fresh fish, thoughtful dishes, and a chill atmosphere. Not flashy, but definitely a place I'd come back to.

We came by for dinner right when they opened so didn't have to wait for a table. Ambiance: 5/5 Dark lighting inside so it's perfect for a date night or even for a hangout with friends. I appreciated how the restaurant didn't smell like fish like some other sushi places. Service: 5/5 Friendly and efficient. Quick to refill our water, pick up plates, and fulfilling our check. Food: 3.5/5 $25 for 7 pieces of nigiri (assemble your 7 or chef's choice) -- if you're a sushi snob like me, you'd agree that these are perfectly regular-sized nigiri. Rice to fish ratio was perfect. Sushi rice was good. I personally didn't think there was much flavor to each though. Hotate butter - Pretty sure this was 1 scallop that was cut into 4 pieces. I didn't think arugula worked well with this dish. Kamo rosu - The sauce was good but the duck was a bit dry to my liking.

Came here for lunch today. We arrived at around 12:30pm and were seated immediately. There was no wait. There were a few other groups inside, and the restaurant was softly lit, making for a quiet, relaxing lunch. My bf and I each ordered a Nigiri Combo and opted to choose our own selection of nigiri. I went with Bluefin Toro, Akami, Hamachi, Shiro Maguro, Sake, Sake Toro (+$2), and Hotate (+$3). The presentation was beautiful, and the rice-to-fish ratio was perfect. The fish quality was good and tasted fresh. We also ordered a side of Brussels Sprout and the Mentaiko Udon. The brussels sprouts were crispy and well-seasoned. The udon was garlicky and yummy. We enjoyed both. The food came out pretty quick after we placed the order. I was pleasantly surprised.

Great option for sushi and Japanese tapas on the Peninsula. Word is just getting out now so the wait times aren't too bad yet but given the relatively affordable prices here, not sure how long that will last. Parking was available but I got one of the last spots in the lot. I came on a Friday night and made a reservation in advance. Still had to wait an additional 10-15 minutes and the only available seating was at the bar. Everyone ordered one of the nigiri omakases. It's a steal at $25 for 7 pieces of your choice plus a small roll. The fish is pretty good quality and the nigiri well made. The caveats are: 1) half of the fish cost extra and can add up easily 2) the nigiri is on the smaller side and the fish is on the thinner side. We also ordered a duck breast to share. It was tender and perfectly cooked although I didn't care much for the canned mandarin slices on the side. That being said, these small nit picks make sense in the context of the relatively affordable prices and won't deter me nor a lot of other people from coming back.

Came here for a date night and had a lovely experience! Cozy nigiri and tapas bar vibes with tvs. A large variety of delicious menu options, from hamachi carpaccio to sizzling ribeye, $35 nigiri combo with tuna roll to Hokkaido uni. The chawanmushi & mentaiko udon were my favorite. Attentive and friendly staff.

Hidden gem, quiet plaza, plenty of parking... this new sushi spot is quality sushi/nigiri infused with Spanish tapas style food! Many drink specials to choose from too! We sat in the private room area, which is large enough for a smaller private party. Service was accurate and fairly quick. Prices are a bit high ghc Our fave was the Toro roll and shishito peppers!

We decide to share a bunch of plates including the pan seared baos, different stuffed rice balls, stuffed scallion pancakes, fried wontons, cucumber salad, purple yam chips, chicken & corn dumplings and Mongolian beef potstickers The pan seared baos and the stuffed scallion pancakes were our absolute favorites. The baos were crispy, rich and juicy. The stuffed scallion pancakes were like tacos with the flakiest and most satisfyingly chewy taco shell. The meat inside was well seasoned and tender. These two dishes in particular are going to be must orders anytime I return. The cheesy kimchi rice balls and purple yam chips were both hits at the table as well. The chips they have made and come out in no time so you can start snacking right away. The rice balls were nice and crispy on the outside than soft and gooey on the inside. They had that bright kimchi flavor. The cucumber salad was good too, the main flavor of them was cilantro so if you don't like cilantro then you should skip it. The fried wontons were standard but satisfying. They did their job. Finally the chicken and corn dumplings and the Mongolian beef dumplings were the weakest of what we ordered. They got mixed reviews from the table. Consensus was that both were pretty bland overall and didn't compare to the other dishes we enjoyed so much. As far as the food there was a lot to love and a couple dishes we'd switch out for something else next time. But we also don't go in expecting to love every dish and are happy to have gotten so many dishes that we do love. Came on a Friday in the early evening and this place was completely empty except for one patron,…read morewhich made me nervous that the food wasn't going to be great. Glad that that wasn't the case! Ordered xiao long bao, fried tofu, sheng jian bao, Beijing potstickers, pea shoots, and green curry with rice. - Xiao long bao: quite tasty and probably my favorite in this area. The soup inside was really sweet and savory and there was a lot of it. Meat was tender and the flavor was spot on. The skin was nice and thin, but with enough elasticity that it didn't tear when the dumplings were still hot out of the steamer and being picked up with chopsticks. I wish they would steam on napa cabbage instead of the foil cups though. Towards the end, the dough was trying to stick and that's no bueno. Also, wouldn't cabbage be cheaper? - Fried tofu: favorite dish of the night, surprisingly. Super crispy coating, and the soy sauce they serve it with has enough salt and flavor to really make it shine! Will order this again and again. - Sheng jian bao: I have serious doubts that these are made in-house (though they might be?). They looked like the frozen ones that every restaurant with sheng jian bao on the menu seems to be serving nowadays. Not that they're bad. In fact, they're pretty good, with a good amount of soup inside, but the dough was a little tough. - Beijing potstickers: like regular potstickers, only less good. Didn't like the dough on these, but they were super juicy! Wish I'd known that before I bit into mine and all the juice came shooting out of the opposite end. Don't be like me, eat this with the butt end in your spoon to catch all the liquid. - Pea shoots: I spit out half of these onto my plate because they were so tough that I couldn't chew the woody stems. I haaaaaaate when restaurants do this - the people preparing the food know what a tender pea shoot feels like. If they're not good, don't serve them to customers. It was like $17 for a plate of greens that were almost inedible, and super unenjoyable to eat. Aside from the poor quality of the veggies themselves, the way they prepared them was perfect, and the flavor was so good. Made me sad that I could barely eat them. - Green curry: ok, but not great. There wasn't enough flavor and there was too much heat. I expect Thai curry to be spicy, but not marking this on the menu for someone who is just trying this for the first time feels like a mistake. Also, not letting someone choose their level of spice also feels like a mistake. Speaking to the menu, there are things about it that make it hard to order. Basically, everything is in English, which is fine, but there are dishes that are translated or simplified that make it hard to know what's what. "Pork buns" are sheng jian bao. I wouldn't have known that if I hadn't asked, and to me and most people I know, a pork bun is just another simplified name for a char siu bao. The only reason why I knew they had sheng jiang bao on the menu was because of the photos on Yelp. Maybe just calling it sheng jiang bao or "pan fried dumplings" would be more helpful. Photos or a brief description (or Chinese characters, for those who can read them) would have been even more helpful. Other notes: the waitstaff is friendly enough, and the kitchen is efficient. Wish they had ice water here. Water is served in carafes that appear to get reused without first being washed, with a sprig of some kind of green thing inside. It goes from the kitchen tap into their fridge to cool a bit before being served, but there is no ice. A water filter on that tap would go a long way to make the water taste more palatable. Not sure what the green thing was, but it didn't impart any appreciable flavor. Will ask for ice next time and hope that it's available because at least if the water were actually cold, it would mask the tap flavor. We'll be back to try other things on the menu, and to order the XLB and fried tofu again, but with tempered expectations.

Disclaimer: I tried to…read morematch the names to the pictures of the dishes as best I could by using their menu later, but it may not be entirely accurate. Though I'm sure if you showed the server that you want one of these they'll probably know what it is. As for the experience, it was pretty straightforward (a good thing, the same way a 5* Uber ride is your driver not saying anything but taking you comfortably from point A to B). We ordered several dishes to share, and I did have an idea of what to expect from what I already saw online. The ambience was quite comfortable, and the food arrived quickly and without issues. We had no real complaints about the dishes. They all tasted excellent, and plated well. The meat was tender, and my favorite was probably what looked to me like a seafood paella. Portions were of reasonable size, and everything tasted great. Honestly there isn't too much to say, other than the food tastes like what you'd expect from these photos: delicious. Definitely a restaurant to revisit.

Our table was fully decorated with birthday confetti and a surprised birthday card placed on the table, very festive and fun vibes. We started with some yummy HH cocktails from 3pm to 6pm. There are good choices for HH food too. But we decided to order off the main menu instead to share with our group. Can't go wrong with ordering any dishes. It is one of the better Latin food I've had. Very fun place to celebrate birthdays or just come for HH too.

Today I was able to meet my friend here for lunch and since it was a weekday we got a table right away at noon. To our pleasant surprise there was a lunch special offered at the back of the menu. For $17 you can a item from column A then B. I went with teriyaki beef (+1) and gyoza. The lunch special came with rice, tea and miso soup. I order the yuzu drink too. Everything was so yummy! The decor is cute with many lucky cats near the entrance and around the sushi bar. Near the back there is a huge display kawaii, anime and robotech figures. I can see kids enjoying looking at them. Looks like they have a private room option that is narrow and long with many 2 seater table side by side, maybe they open it up when they get busy. They have a parking lot that can exit through the back is what my friend told me but I found street which has a 2 hour limit. I saw a car with a parking ticket so I'm guessing they do enforce it. I had got there early so I checked out the super cute Bird Garden store next door if you have time to kill

Good place. I tried:…read more 1. Edamame. This was good, as it usually is, since it's a pretty simple dish. 2. Bento box with sushi (5 nigiri of chef's choice) and avocado maki. The bento box comes with rice, salad, and miso soup. Everything was good. The sushi was fresh and tender, and they gave me cooked shrimp, salmon, and 3 that I couldn't identify. The salad was good, too, with a creamy dressing that maybe had some sesame paste in it. The amount of dressing was about right, maybe just a touch more than ideal for me, but they were pretty light-handed with it overall. The miso soup and avocado maki were good. The avocado maki had more avocado in proportion to rice than other places, so that was nice. 3. Mochi ice cream, strawberry. This was pretty good. About average, I guess. 4. Yuzu cheesecake. Nice citrus flavor. I know Japanese cheesecakes are airier/lighter than American cheesecakes, but I thought they are usually a bit more creamy than this one. This one was more like a regular cake. It was good, though. Overall a good, casual place I'd be glad to return to for Japanese food. Service was good, although there were only two servers while we were there, and so sometimes it could be a bit slow. There were two TV screen showing sports. There is a small parking lot, or you can park on a nearby street.
