I love this place! Best acai bowls I can find in the area and I love treating myself to one every once in a while. My favorite is the frutas bowl and I'll add honey to it. The toppings are always fresh and presented well, and the bowl is packed to the brim, which I appreciate. The staff are also very friendly, and though I've never had the time to sit in and eat there, there are a few spots to sit that are almost always taken - they are busy! I also enjoy the mini cheese bites and one of these days I'll try some of their other hot food items. read more

Hoping to support a small business and enjoy a good cup of coffee, I stopped by this local shop, but unfortunately the experience left a bad taste in my mouth. I asked for whip cream on my drip coffee and was told they wouldn't do that because they're "not trying to be like Starbucks." Even after offering to pay extra, they still refused, despite clearly having whip cream on hand for other drinks. It wasn't an outrageous request, just a small personal preference many shops are happy to accommodate. I understand wanting to create a unique vibe, but refusing a simple request from a paying customer when the item is already available felt more pretentious than principled. I came in wanting to support local but left feeling dismissed and unwelcome. Kitanda Espresso & Acai is a local Brazilian coffee chain that has pao de queijos, coxinhas, coffees, and acai bowls. We came here early in the morning to grab some items to go to bring back - a Brazilian coffee that has condensed milk, pao de queijos, and coxinhas. The coffee was strong, but could have had a bit more of the condensed milk (which could be requested on the next visit). The pao de queijos were actually dry, and I'm thinking it's because of their larger size? I wish that they were chewier. The coxinhas were more on the bland side and had a strong chicken taste/odor to them - honestly, I've had better ones! Service was friendly, but definitely slow and forgetful - we were waiting for some time for the pastries, and we had to go up and give them a friendly reminder as our order was incomplete. There is some seating inside, but most seem to get their orders to go. Got a Caramel Latte and it was so good! Good value and quality. They were pretty busy for a Monday morning at 11:30am but the drinks come out quickly. A little confusion between me and another customer when picking up my drink since they don't call out order numbers or names, but nothing major. Ola! Boa tarde! My friends and I have been customers at Kitanda since they opened. We have always loved getting their Acai bowls, Coxinha, Pao de Quejo, and Iced Coffee - especially since we have either lived, studied, or visited Brazil. As regulars, we have always been treated well- except for today. Typically, we order Acai bowls and ask for it to be scooped out fresh rather than handed to us pre-frozen. We like to eat our Acai soft rather than frozen since we can just buy the frozen pre-made Samba ones ourselves from the grocery store. Although the lovely workers have always been accommodating, today was embarrassing. After we noticed that our Acai Bowl was frozen (as seen in the picture compared to mine that was freshly scooped), we kindly asked the male worker on staff (had glasses, dark hair, black shirt) if he could change it. Again, this HAS been done for us MULTIPLE times - especially since we never try to be rude. After explaining the situation and how we have been accommodated before, the male worker agreed. HOWEVER, once the WHITE female on staff (brown/dark brown roots and bleach blonde hair) overheard the conversation, she refused to accommodate us in front of everyone. Even after we politely explained the situation to her and asked again, she still refused and said that the Acai Bowl was "fresh" but that she had put it in the freezer 20-30 mins prior (yet it was STILL rock hard). I do not mean to be fickle in this review, but it seems that the common denominator is that THE ONLY TIME WE HAVE BEEN REFUSED IS BY WHITE FEMALE WORKERS and we are BIPOC/Latina women. Shoutout to the Brazillian guy who is always so kind that works there- he always accommodates us and is happy to talk about the Portuguese language and Brazil- something that is comforting as I experience saudade for my time in Brazil. Sadly, we now feel uncomfortable ordering from the White staff at Kitanda- but we will definitely be coming back when they're not there! - also, just overheard that the male worker were LATE to their shift today (06/28), most likely explaining why they didn't feel like they had the time to serve us a softer Acai bowl. Checked out Kitanda because it's one of Cap Hill's few cafe's with west facing windows to capture some evening sunlight and enjoy a late afternoon coffee Was pleasantly surprised by the great window seating with around 6 seats, lots of area to put laptop and snacks. I ordered a Brazilian latte and Kitanda Bread Original w/ Cream Cheese and Nutella spread. Truly, everything was great and so satisfying!!! Also very affordable which is a great perk given the general cost of coffee and pastries in the area. Also, music was fire and was at the perfect volume but isn't too distracting. The staff was generally nice -- direct, but nice! All you really need from a cafe. Another disclaimer, it was hard to get connected to the wifi server at first. Going to multiple different Kitanda's at this point, I wanted to show my colleagues how good it is. We went to the one at Capitol Hill. In which, knowing what I already love, I went w/ the Tudo which consists of the açaí base w/ peanut butter, banana, strawberries, coconut, cacao nibs, dried mango, hemp seeds, Brazil nuts, sweetened condensed milk, & honey. For some reason this specific location pre freezes their açaí. I would assume the only logical reason is because they get busy and probably have a few pre made and ready to go. The only thing problematic about this is that I prefer my açaí on the softer side, which is how the açaí is intended to be served (and I want to add that this is how I've always had the açaí here at Kitanda). Lately, I have been getting a lot of the pre-frozen açaí served to me and I don't really enjoy having to wait 10-20 minutes for it to thaw out to my preference. My order: Custom Acai bowl with extra acai and strawberries and a Brazilian latte. My Acai bowl with extra Acai was rock hard and in turn had frozen my strawberries as well. My friend ordered an Acai bowl too but hers was actually fresh (which is how I like mine). So now we have two Acai bowls that are not consistent with each other. Hmm maybe because mine had been stuck in the freezer. Anyways, I decided to politely ask the staff yesterday if they can switch it out for me because I prefer my açaí on the softer side. After some reluctance, one gentleman said he would remake it for me until his coworker asked what was going on. She literally stopped mid-task to meddle into what he was helping me with. She insisted on taking over the situation and began to tell me how the açaí she personally served me was still "fresh" and that she only put it in the freezer about 30 minutes before it was served to me (I'm sorry but once you stick something in the freezer it isn't considered fresh anymore-my Acai was rock hard even with just 30 minutes). At this point everyone in the store was staring at me and she insisted on not serving me a new one. I have very bad anxiety and it took a lot for me to even ask for a replacement so after being declined I feel it's fair to say that I was undervalued as someone who supports this business. Ultimately, I wanted a refund because I even paid for extra Acai that was not to my satisfaction but I was too embarrassed to ask for one with everyone still staring at me in the store as if I was asking for the impossible! Since I did not get a replacement Acai bowl or a refund I would say this review is warranted and fair! I found the staff to be extremely inconsiderate and they lacked empathy. As a former food service professional, I find those are basic customer service skills so I don't know how your staff doesn't even have the basics down. Yikes! read more

Let me start by saying it is not easy to eat breakfast out on a restricted diet being gluten , dairy free and largely vegan. ( I'll have limited seafood). The average trendy eggs n' bacon or avocado toast place's cannot be considered. This little spot was perfect.! They have Açaí bowl's of multiple varieties with really fresh ingredients that does not disappoint. In addition, the granola is gluten free! The Brazilian coffee is great. My husband had a latte. Which he rated to be Starbucks quality. There are good tea options as well. Service was great too. There was only one man working, who had a nice accent and seemed to know all his regular customers well. He did not seem overwhelmed at all and made us feel welcome. I highly recommend this place if you are anything like me, and I'm finding there are actually quite a lot of us out there. read more

I like this place! I used to drive first to Redmond, then to Green Lake, to enjoy these delicious açai bowls. Now they're finally in Cap Hill, and I can get them any time I want!!! The combinations are fantastic. I'm always torn between getting the Lena or the Sao Paulo. Both have granola, strawberry and condensed milk. But the Lena also has bananas. What I get usually depends on how hungry (or ambitious) I'm feeling that day :) And to keep a sweet/savory balance, I include a Kitanda bread original, which is none other than the delicious cheese bread rolls (pão de queijo). Ask them warm for the best experience! The coffee is good, but I wouldn't say that it's my favorite coffee. I truly come here for the acai and bread rolls :) This store, like the other Kitandas, also sells bags of pre-made bread rolls that you can bake at home. Shame prevents me from divulging how many of these I've eaten in the past. These make for a great snack! read more

I can't believe I passed this place for so long before checking it out. I knew I liked acai bowls but kitanda bread is a new concept for me. But it's delicious. I got the Louco bowl and liked the balance of peanut butter against the acai base. I also tried the Romeo and Juliet kitanda bread, which is a slab of fresh mozzarella and a slab of guava paste. Not a combination I was expecting to work so well together. And to top it off, a Brazilian latte, which was not particularly noteworthy, but a good way to squeeze lunchtime coffee into this meal. read more
