    Chicken Tikka Masala: not good
    Akela J.

Im sorry but this is the worst Indian food that Ive ever had in my life. And its not easy to say this but it really was that bad and I am very disappointed. The ratings for here are superb so I can only imagine that it was a bad batch. It was also delivery so I can speak on the service or ambiance only the food. Chana saag: 2/5 the best thing I had out of all my items but it was still very blans Chicken Biryani: 0/5 it was really terrible, watery and mushy and no flavor almost like they added water to day old biryani and warmed it up to the point of over cooking amd washing away all the flavor. Tikka masala: 1/5 no flavor at all, no salt nothing. Honestly just an awful experience in general.

Was hoping this was saffron or something but it's not. I've ordered from here multiple times and this is the only time I've seen this, and it wasn't in the other samosa.

Did a takeout order from here last night ordering through Yelp for the first time, cool! Order was ready in about 15 minutes. Food came out hot and tasty. I would say of all the Indian places I've tried this place ranks 3rd. (Tried maybe 7?) Super affordable when you get the dinner special, wish the chicken tikka masala I ordered was more creamy instead of super tomatoey, but plenty of chicken chunks were embedded in the sauce. The Naan was solid, nothing crazy special though. Rice was delicious and the little sauces that came with it were good too. Didn't love the gobi manchurian. Would def return if craving Indian food in the area as it's in an incredibly convenient location and the food was good enough.

Great place, clean, great service and great food! We may have been the only two guests in the restaurant dining in at the time but I still have to point out how attentive our waiter was. He didn't make a lot of conversation or anything, but he seemed like he cared about our experience and explained the menu options to us to make sure we were comfortable with what we ordered. We walked in during lunchtime on a Sunday. This place is so clean, not a dirty footprint on their floors or even a fingerprint on the tables. The dishes and silverware were spotless. The entire restaurant was fresh smelling (I am sensitive to smells sometimes and I can sense a dirty establishment with only one whiff of air!). This place actually earned their 'A' grade unlike some other places we won't get into right now... The food was clean and fresh, and marinated to perfection without tasting like it's been sitting out all day waiting for customers-- instead, it tasted like we were waiting on the food to be cooked. Now that I think of it, they must be quite talented because we weren't waiting a long time for our main dish. They served us our vegetable samosas first and as soon as we were done, our goat curry and chicken tikka masala came out. The plating was quite nice-- it was beautiful food that was also tasty! The sauces were thick and hearty but not too thick. It certainly was not watered down like many places in the area that try to stretch their portions out to last the day. They give you a good amount of meat/protein of choice in the sauce, too. It was a nice ambiance with subtle music playing in the background to match the food experience. This is quality Indian food with a pretty diverse array of menu options. There is a great dinner menu for two for around $30. The prices are so affordable and we definitely got our money's worth. This will be my new go-to Indian cuisine spot that I can dine in anytime in the area!

5/5 Food 5/5 Service 5/5 Price Unassuming little Indian spot with delicious food, good prices, and attentive staff! The inside looked a lot fancier than I was expecting. The tables were nicely set up, the room was lit more dimly and the overall feel was more romantic in the evening. What we ordered: Mango Lassie; 2 person special with Chicken Soup, Garlic Naan, Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Saag (for ~$31!) The food was delicious!! They started us with these interesting chip appetizers with an assortment of sauces and they were really good. Not too filling but they had yummy flavor. They brought out the chicken soup first and it was warm and comforting. I had the chicken tikka masala and it was also delicious, especially with the crispy garlic naan. At the end, they gave us a sweet rice dessert for free! Service was also great, our server made sure to keep our glasses filled and everyone on the staff was kind and welcoming. Highly recommend if you're in the area!

Really delicious, affordable place to eat! The staff were so kind, they answered all of my questions and even gave me rice pudding on the house. Will certainly be making the trip from out of my neighborhood to come back. We need to preserve gems like this! Please go in person

We chose bar seating, which ended up being a bit of a tight squeeze facing the wall; not the most comfortable setup, but manageable for a short meal. To start, we had the pani puri, followed by the samosa chaat. The flavors were good, but the samosa chaat was a bit of a letdown. It wasn't served hot, and the samosa itself was soggy rather than crisp. That contrast in texture is really what makes the dish shine, so it felt like it may have sat a bit too long or was over-sauced. We also tried the vegetable pav, which was decent, and the cod, which was actually very good; nicely cooked with a flavorful sauce. I did find myself wishing we had an extra roti to soak up the rest. For drinks, I had the mango lassi, which I appreciated for not being overly sweet. Service was okay but could be more attentive. My water wasn't refilled after a couple of rounds, and we felt a bit rushed toward the end of the meal. We were given the check without being asked about dessert, which caught us off guard. We did ask afterward, but by then decided to go elsewhere. That said, the food overall is flavorful, and I can see why this place has appeal; especially if you're looking for something a little different in the neighborhood. Having met the owner before in Industry City, it's great to see her doing well in Carroll Gardens, and I wish the restaurant continued success.

I have not been disappointed once after eating more than 5 times. Below are items that I order regularly: 1. Chicken Biryani 2. Kosha Mangsho (Goat Curry) 3. Chilli Chicken - This is probably the best I have ever eaten! However I highly recommend eating this at the restaurant coz Togo will get soggy and not as much fun! There are couple of things which I am not a fan of: 1. They do not have a phone number on their website 2. Their Togo menu is different than their sit in menu. However, if you go there and ask them for items that are in their sit-in menu, they have never said no

The decor and vibe of this place is so vibrant and beautiful, it instantly puts you in a good mood. I came here for a solo dinner during restaurant week which was a pretty good deal. Most of the patrons seem like they were neighborhood locals which I love to see. I would say based on the flavors and the people dining here that this restaurant is more of a gentrified desi place than authentic. I found the flavors in most of the items I tried lacking. The fuchka prepared tableside is a nice touch, but again the marketing is geared more towards non-desi patrons. The fish fry was delicious and a good portion but more like a good British fish n chips cod filet than a desi fish fry with proper spices. Even the mustard served on the side was awfully bland with no spice whatsoever. While I can still appreciate the flavors, I will always be disappointed when an establishment trades authenticity to serve and coddle palettes that do not appreciate proper desi food. The lamb curry was very very good, and I specifically asked for it to be made spicy. Dining here felt like invading a curated space for non Indians, so I unapologetically ate the curry and rice with my hands to remind myself that yes, this is still our food even if it's muted. To the owners I say - do better and do not shy away from authentic flavors. This is afterall, New York freaking City. We are allowed to show up and showcase our cuisine with full masala, full spice and full heat - just the way God intended it to be.

Since then, we've dined in, and taken out, and the food has been unfailingly delicious. If you can swing it, dining in is always the move. Unlike the aforementioned sushi joint, Dastaan has decorated to make the small space much more colorful, and infinitely more welcoming. It seems to be a family business, judging by the somewhat surly (teenage?) waitress, but she was still there for anything we needed. Plus, you'll get some complimentary papadum with homemade tamarind and green sauce. But either way, the food will be good. The naan is fresh and fluffy, the poori is delightful (this airy goodness is dine-in only, I'd imagine), the lasuni gobi starter is one of my favorite things, and the curries are all deeply rich and flavorful. We've had korma, bhuna, and saag, with seafood or chicken or paneer or lamb. We've of course had chicken tikka masala and butter chicken (I'd prefer dark meat in the latter for taste and juiciness, but I imagine I'm in the minority). All of it has been super, super tasty. One of my kids is coming around to the fact that Indian food can be amazing, the other will only eat rice and mango lassi. But Dastaan gives me hope that some day they'll crave it like I do. We're going to keep coming in, and taking out.

In short, we ordered chicken tikka masala and garlic naan through Uber Eats but then received the entirely wrong order an hour later. We got the got the issue corrected with Uber Eats, and I called the restaurant to ask that they remake our order for which we would pick it up and pay for it in person. The main woman who was assisting asked me where the incorrect order was as she claimed it is a requirement that we bring the wrong order back to the restaurant to be issued a full refund (?). I said I was not made aware that we had to do this, and furthermore, I know that based on hygienic food practices, they should be trashing any food that goes to the wrong customers... especially since the food has now changed hands multiple times with a delivery driver and being in our home... She insisted that this was not true and that the food could be used to feed their employees, which may be the case, but again, this was not clear and I am skeptical of any restaurant who accepts back food that has been out of their sight for nearly 2 hours at that point. She and the other woman continued arguing with me on this - at one point insisting they will send their delivery driver back with me to pick up the food?! Absolutely not. I was feeling incredibly harassed at this point - and honestly between being hungry and pregnant, I communicated this and that this situation was stressful, but they were continuing to argue with me. The second woman started to dismiss me, even. I asked my husband to come in and take care of the bill because I had to remove myself from that situation, and I could see him through the window continuing to be berated by the main woman for her assumption that we would be trashing the food that was incorrectly delivered. (I never stated this, I did state that I am aware that restaurants have to throw this food out.) He confirmed that she was being just as argumentative with him. This is such a shame because Indian Spice was such a wonderful part of our experience when we last lived in Brooklyn, and based on this, I would never order from here again.
