The rep that worked that day, her name is Kendra, was extremely professional and was very informative. She told us about Wally and the entire adoption process. It couldn't have gone any smoother. Reconsider. The staff is rude, and honestly, crazy. They sell kittens on the side for additional money. Folks that buy kittens off Craigslist, or wherever, might not have the best intentions for these innocent animals. Please reconsider, your adoption "donation" goes to fund practices like this. I fostered a pregnant cat years ago. They promised me all this help at the time I was considering fostering (I was barely out of college). Except they actually provided nothing (no food, beds, education...), left me unprepared, and partnered me with an insane woman who would call me up at all hours constantly, including while I was at work to vent. Ge this, the lady was allergic to cats, but had over 30 of them. She spent most of her time complaining about allergies and her husband. After the mama gave birth, I was told that I could adopt, and I bonded with a tabby kitten. Once I told the insane lady this, she literally called me abusive because I didn't want to adopt the mother (who didn't seem to care for me). She claimed that I wanted to declaw the cats, and I received a weird phone call from another staff member about this. Then, she confessed that she wanted all the kittens, including the tabby I bonded with, so she could sell them off to make money. WTF! read more

Like many reviews on here state, the people who run Kitty Kind are not "people persons" to say the least! I understand they want their cats to go to stable forever homes, but their review process is insane and inhumane to the applicants (don't worry, the cats are fine). The people are very judgmental in their attempts to be discerning; I even witnessed them make a little girl cry the short time I was there. I adopted my cat ~4 years ago now, but a random memory of the process that just popped into my mind perturbed me so much that I felt driven to write this review! I only had prior experience with an ASPCA on the upper east side whose application process seemed equally ridiculous, so maybe it's just the nature of an NYC shelter. Regardless if it's a system that can be improved or not, it's still a one star. To be specific, they required a home visit and came up with an unreasonable list of things to do to accommodate a cat. So silly. After initially considering it I ultimately said I wasn't willing to do any of their desired changes; then they folded and said I'd be approved anyway. Listen Kitty Kind, it's not rocket science to take care of a cat. I don't know where you get off trying to be more stringent than child protective services LOL. I know you are kitty kind but try being PEOPLE kind. read more

I adopted my wonderful little boy Omega here, but I would never return for another. I talked to one of the staff members quite a lot during the process and afterwards, and I'm sorry to say that certain members of the organization seem to care more about their egos than the animals - even though they're supposedly volunteering in order to help the animals. After 11 to 12 years together, my first two indoor-only cats, the loves of my life, passed away within several months of each other. Not long after, I adopted a little guy named Spot and was searching for a companion for him. I really had a rapport with Lauren and enjoyed working with her at first. But what followed was horrific. Lauren and Patricia had found pill bottles in my bathroom. I had been switching medications, and so had multiple vials in a plastic box. The vials were closed, but the box should have been sealed, which I readily acknowledge. Patricia escaped to the car, and Lauren, who remained, approached me like I was a criminal. I don't exaggerate here. They didn't know what the medications were, but perhaps felt that only complete lunatics take medications - for anything. In a later conversation, months later, Lauren doubled-down, indicating that people who take medications - possibly for anything - deserve to be treated with great suspicion. I was told by Lauren that I would be allowed to foster Omega, I think only because it was a long journey and Omega was already in my apartment. I could adopt him if he did well with my other little boy, Spot. Or perhaps if the staff members could somehow convince themselves that I wasn't a complete whacko. I suppose that to them, anyone who takes medication - for anything - is likely too unstable to adopt. I don't think they would disagree. Over the next two weeks, Lauren went back and forth between asking when I was going to come in to sign in the adoption agreement and then backtracking and asking why I was in such a hurry. Whatever the reasons for it, the game playing was unfair to me and to Omega. I was eventually allowed to sign the adoption agreement, thankfully. And then the story gets worse. After about two weeks with me, Omega became severe nauseous and started vomiting. He was lethargic and obviously uncomfortable. Both Lauren and Patricia acted surprisingly unconcerned when I told them and they discouraged me from getting him medical care - especially Patricia. I'm a bit of a worrier, indeed, but their reaction was pretty shocking. After I looked at the adoption agreement, I knew the likely reason - KittyKind is supposed to cover medical care for a number of days after an adoption agreement is signed. Interestingly enough, Lauren initially told me that Omega did not have a history of vomiting. Months later, as I write my review, she has revealed that Omega suffered from vomiting before he came to me. She knew before. She claimed she'd told me this. However, she maintained, the severe vomiting and lethargy that I described shouldn't merit a visit to the doctor, anyway. And this woman is supposed to be an animal lover? I'm a good father to my cats and I wonder the extent to which they mistreat other good parents. It makes me sad that a lot of incredible little ones might miss out on good homes because some of the staff members care more about feeling pleased with themselves than finding good homes for the cats. There are a lot of adoption agencies out there, and I really hope that my story encourages you to try others instead. read more

But overall, no complaints in my adoption process. I appreciate that they are very selective. I did end up working with KittyKind again when they helped me pull my second cat from the ACC's kill list. Again, the rep was super helpful. read more

I'm usually in and out of PetCo to see their selection of cat items since I'm in the process of adopting/fostering since I just lost my precious fur baby last month to an onset of kidney issues and rapid weight loss. I decided to stop by the cat cage area which just so happens to be managed by KittyKind, and while the initial woman that let me see the cats was nice, I get bad vibes from this place overall. The other two women that I interacted with made me feel as if I'm too inept to adopt a cat - as if I haven't had a cat before, which I have, and in which has been clearly communicated to them both. I'm well over the age to adopt, have a job, and guess what - I also volunteer at a competing animal shelter in the city in addition to my regular job! Despite the bad vibes, I decided to put an app in for two kitties, and during the interview at KittyKind, the woman that I spoke to made me feel dumb the entire time. She even tried telling me what my household is like - baffling, to say the least. Try doing a home visit first, and then tell me what my residence is like, thanks. She also tried telling me that I can't afford a cat when my family and I agreed to split costs from the get go, in which that was also communicated on the application and during the interview. I'm at the point where I don't even care if I get the kitties from this place. With the amount of shelters in the city, including mine, I'm sure I'll find a loving cat or set of kitties that will be the perfect match with me and not deal with people that can't be transparent to save their lives, make me feel inept and stupid, and tell me about myself when they don't even know me. I don't mind supporting PetCo, but it'll be from afar moving forward - or I'll just stick to the one on the other side of my neighborhood in Brooklyn - I only go to the one on 17th and Broadway since I'm almost always in the city, so it's convenient for me. If you're looking to adopt from here - good luck, and adopter beware. read more

I hate being a downer on adoption agency's because how can you put down a place that saves animals as their main goal? It's seems like a sin to say anything negative about them, but I feel like we were judged way too hard with this agency to point of being profiled. So what if we don't live in an apartment in the city? And so what if we don't earn $100,000+ year? We would still love, cherish and fully provide for any animal we bring into our home. Again, while I think it's WONDERFUL they are saving our feline friends, the fact that they are so harsh in their judgments means some of these cats miss out on going to really good, loving families. (PS just because a person has a fancy job, is white, and lives an expensive area, does NOT mean they will make time for or properly care for their kitty. Js) read more

I am reading a lot of bad reviews on this site. I just adopted my cat one week ago from Kitty Kind and it was the most pleasant experience. I also hear a lot of negativity regarding Patricia. She is a kind and compassionate person whose only interest is for the sweet cats that they rescue. I went to Petco on Sunday afternoon, she came to my house to do an inspection on Sunday night, and the next day (Monday) she delivered my sweet adorable 2 year old black cat who I love so much. I adopted Stella in July of 2008. She was an older kitty who lost her home of many years and was quite shy in her cage. She had seemingly been looked over by other adopters in favor of younger, more energetic kittens. The KittyKind adoption rep. pointed her out to me and allowed me to hold her for a few moments. The very second that Stella landed in my arms, she began purring and nuzzling into my neck. No question, she was meant for me! After completing the adoption process, I brought Stella home and she has only grown more and more cuddly and energetic! She is one clever and curious gal. In fact, after about 8 months, I was worried that she was actually becoming bored while I was off at work all day, so I started to think about getting a second cat so she would have a companion. I went back to KittyKind in March of 2009 and talked to the adoption rep. about finding a good companion for Stella. She pointed out a few kitties and after "meeting" each of them, I went home to think it over and came back to adopt a big, goofy orange tabby named Rufus. He won me over by flopping over in his cage and insisting on a belly rub! I brought Rufus home and spent a couple of weeks introducing him to Stella (who did not care for him one bit at first). Stella finally came around and decided that Rufus would be an acceptable new roommate and now they chase each other around, play together, and play "king of the hill" on my lap (Stella always wins). I love my kitties so much and am so thankful for KittyKind, and all of its tremendous volunteers, for bringing them into my life. Kitty Kind is a wonderful organization. They brought me one of my greatest joys in life - my kitty Albus. The volunteers at Kitty Kind really took the adoption process seriously and I could tell how important it was for them for all of their cats to find good homes. We saw little Albus in a crate by himself at Petco one day and asked about the cute little black and white kitten. From the get go they were fantastic about answering every question we had and making sure we could provide the little guy with the best home possible. We had all of his shots etc. and they even paid for his first vet visit since he had little cold when we adopted him. I was very impressed with how they checked up to make sure everything was going well and gave us great advice on how to take care of our first cat. I am so happy to have had the experience with Kitty Kind and would recommend anyone adopt from them. Life just wouldn't be as good without our cat and I have Kitty Kind to thank for that. read more

- I won't pretend that I know more about the organization than Josie but I have recently (in the past 12 months) fostered and adopted from them - they're non-kill - I was told that the cat I fostered (and eventually ended up adopting for a mandatory donation of $125) was in perfect health, besides being a bit dirty and still underweight from his previous situation. . . turns out, not so much. After a trip to the vet we've been informed that he's suffering from kidney disease, requiring daily IVs, medication, and prescription low protein food, unavailable at regular pet stores (aka costing a small fortune) - I only ask that people not punish the cats for the mistakes of the people, fostering doesn't cost a thing, they provide a bag of food and a cat carrier for you to take your fluffle home read more

Our 1 year old male Tabby, Manny, was adopted at Kitty Kind in Sept. 07. Manny was apparently found wandering the streets in Flatbush, and was dewormed, neutered, and cleared for Feline AIDS and leukemia before he made it out onto the adoption floor. We went to Kitty Kind because they were the only agency we could find that didn't require a copy of our lease with a clause saying that cats were allowed. We had a verbal agreement with our landlord, but our lease said "No Pets." And we felt that asking him to write us a letter would be pushing it. I can't lie, the fist few months were expensive. Manny had giardia, ear mites and ring worm (a skin fungus) on one ear that showed-up about 4 weeks after we'd gotten him. Our vet (North Side Vetrinary Clinic in Williamsburg) helped us clear it all up, and now he's our healthy, happy, cuddly, playful, sometimes annoying as hell, love-cat. Kitty Kind may have crazy cat ladies working there, and may not be most reputable place to adopt in nyc....we would have chosen The Humane Society or BARK if we could have, but we lucked-out and ended up with a really fantastic cat. I was at Petco just browsing when I saw they had homeless cats. I am a cat lover so I stopped to look. I got it in my head that maybe I should foster a cat. I knew I was not in the market for a permanent adoption because I have an old cat who might not take to the idea of a new pet. The volunteers were really nice, very helpful, and I found myself within minutes heading home with my new foster. They helped me pick out a younger looking male because they felt he would get along with my older female cat. I was interviewed quickly by 2 people to assess my commitment and to stress that at any time I could bring the cat back if it wasn't working out. They said they were going to have a home visit at some point (which never happened). Of course I fell in love with my foster cat and decided to make it a permanent adoption. I don't know how other people send back the little babies they bring into their home!. Sometime within the first few weeks I had the new cat, (otherwise known as Mr. Snickers) I took him to a vet for a check up and I was told he was about 6 months old, when the volunteer at Kitty Kind told me he was about a year old. He was only about 7 lbs so I should have known better. Other then that Mr. Snickers was in perfect health and has continued to be so since then. Surprisingly, he and my old cat get along pretty good. She doesn't enjoy his playful advances all the time, but sometimes they even cuddle and wash each other. Overall I am very satisfied with my dealings with KittyKind. I cannot address their financial status or their record keeping, other then to say that they were really prompt in dealing with me when I was going through the adoption process. I have since been back to the location, just to look, and the volunteers are always diligently cleaning the cages, feeding the cats, and giving them much needed attention They are willing to answer questions, and are quick to make sure that people don't touch cat to cat without washing hands! read more

Just adopted a beautiful cat from Kittykind. We were thinking of adopting cats from a different organization but they took a long time to respond to our application and behaved as if they were doing us a huge favor. Kittykind on the other hand was very quick to respond and professional about the entire process. Even when there were some issues with the cat, Kittykind was responsive and helpful. Miriam in particular has been wonderful. It's been 5 weeks she still emails just to check in and make sure everything is going well. I adopted a kitten from here who was given a clean bill of health. Later on, I found out that the kitten had a respiratory infection and an intestinal parasite (both of which he passed on to my cat at home). Thousands of dollars in vet bills later, we have not been able to get rid of the parasite and need to undergo a third round of medication. If you decide to adopt a cat from here, double check that their bill of health is accurate and up to date. I do not understand how my kitten could have ended up in this condition had he been properly cared for at the shelter. read more

Adding a new member to the family should be a pleasant experience, but with this organization it was intolerable. The volunteers were not at all helpful and had a bit of an attitude when we asked to look at the cats at the petco in Union square. They made it seem like they didn't want to find homes for the cats, but were just there to stand around and obnoxiously flirt with each other and tease the cats. When my mom started to browse the binder of cats that was sitting out on the table (since again, the volunteers were to busy to chatting with one another for her to see the cats there) another volunteer woman literally snatched the book out of her hands. I didn't bother checking out the application process as it was clear they didn't want to adopt out any of the cats. I ended up adopting through Liberty Humane Society who are great and want to help find homes for the cats who all deserve a loving place to call home. read more

Like some of the other reviewers mentioned, the interview process here is INSANE. I felt like I was Ben Stiller in Meet the Parents being interrogated by the TSA. When my roommate and I first approached the cat adoption area, a nice young volunteer showed us all the cats and let us play with them. She then told us to be careful because they had had a cat escape the day before and it climbed into a wall... After we filled out a form, Kathy interviewed us. She was hostile, judgmental and rude, and I could tell upon meeting us she did not want to give us a cat. My roommate and I are both young working professionals, who have grown up and cared for cats our whole lives. She grilled me when I said I typically fed my cats in the past dry food, which was specifically because my cat had a reaction to wet food and couldn't eat it. She proceeded to inform me for about 5 minutes on why I should be feeding cats only wet food. Keep in mind these people are all volunteers. They are not VETS! She also asked how we would keep a cat from escaping (as we have an outdoor terrace) when guests are over. I said we would put the cat in a bedroom with access to litter box, food etc. She kept asking about this, saying over and over again that often people made mistakes when they had guests over and then told us about a time when her cat died because her boyfriend opened a window and her cat jumped out. SO not only did this organization have a cat stuck in the wall, the crazy lady who thinks she is Secretary of Cat Adoption had a cat die due to an accident. Of course that is terrible and so sad and accidents happen to everyone, but then don't get on me for a mistake YOU MADE. She continued with questioning like this the whole time - everything from who would take care of the cat when I was on vacation, a 10 minute lecture on how bad declawing was after I already said I don't believe in it, etc. She literally found any reason she could NOT to give me a cat...isn't your job to place cats in homes?!?!?!?! After this terrible experience, we went to the ASPCA, who were so helpful and gracious, and saw that we were caring, compassionate and stable people who could take care of a cat. We were informed a few days later that we were not selected for the adoption process. I really hope this organization will chill the fuck out and let people deserving of animals actually adopt them instead of keeping them locked in cages in Petsmart. In sum, DO NOT ADOPT FROM THESE PEOPLE. Go to your local vet or ASPCA. read more

We were really disappointed with our experience at KittyKind at Petco Union Sq we are so sad to say. The girls who were cleaning out the cages (who I think work for Petco) were just lovely, helpful, took the time to answer any questions, gave advise and really cared about the gorgeous bundles of fur. The volunteer who was there on Sunday (4/28, lady with short dark hair) was disinterested, unhelpful and didn't seem to know the answers to any questions. She kept pushing us to fill in an application as she wanted to close up so we did. Then when it came to interview time she said "she was tired and didn't want to be bothered" so she asked another lady to do it who didn't volunteer for KittyKind (we asked). We got asked basic questions which we answered (window screens, what would you feed etc which are important) but we felt it was a half hearted interview and they seemed more interested wondering why the cats we had growing up were outside cats rather than inside (we both lived in the country growing up and everyone's cats were outside). Yes my cat, when I was a child, died by being hit by a car on a street miles from our home which we seemed to be getting punished for now! For the record our other cat died of old age peacefully at home surrounded by a loving family!! I explained the cats we adopt would be inside cats but alas we got declined and they refused to explain why. At least have the niceness to explain. So unprofessional as were their emails. I understand you have to vet people, as you thoroughly should, but at least have people vetting who know what they are doing and can do it well. We are two loving people, professional, grown up with cats and dogs, good space apartment who love animals and are excited to have two additions to our family. You have so many bad reviews on here KittyKind - all saying the same thing. Maybe it's time to vet your volunteers as you do your adopters as I can imagine half of them wouldn't make the cut.... read more

They are doing good things but they make up unnecessary and anxious rules throughout the adoption process. For example, I was asked to send a video of my apartment. Then they decided they wanted a video of the screens in my windows. Then they wanted a video of me punching the screens to prove the screens were in place. WTF? read more

I cannot thank KittyKind enough for helping me find my orange tiger cat, Thurston, last summer. I had lost one of my two cats the previous winter and was in the Petco on Union Square buying some toys and treats for my remaining cat Max. I was not really thinking of adopting at the time but when I saw Thurston, I fell! I came back over the next week, each time thinking that he would have been adopted and gone. He was still there and came purring and rolling on the cage floor each time I saw him. Yes, the interview process is rigorous. The KittyKind volunteer who interviewed me had concerns because Max had been de-clawed (done before I got him) and wanted to make sure that I would not de-claw Thurston. I have talked to friends who have been put off by this process. One joked she had an easier time getting her mortgage than adopting a cat (KittyKind, you would get my money for a bailout every time!). Joking aside, you are adopting a living creature not buying a pair of shoes and they are being careful that these cats are not mistreated or wind up homeless yet again. As for the health issues that some people have mentioned, Thurston was diagnosed with ringworm just before I was to pick him up. The volunteer said that they could keep him for another month while he was being treated to make sure that he was healthy when he came home with me. I chose to still adopt him at that time, take him to my own vet for treatment and keep him separated from my other cat until he was healthy. Miriam of KittyKind followed up with helpful emails and advice on how to deal with the problems. It was not easy, but today Thurston (see photo) is a happy, healthy, loving and wonderful cat and Max and I have a great good friend. If not for KittyKind, I would not have found him. I recently adopted a cat from KittyKind. It was a foster at first, and it was not successful. But when a family member was interested, we talked to KK and they made it work in another household to get the cat a home. They are stringent in their decision making, and are very discerning in their screening/application process which some may disagree with, but they are doing it in the name of the cats. No, they don't have the money or space to give their cats the big runs or rooms for privacy, but they are vigilant about keeping them safe, well fed and in finding good, safe, stable homes for them. I love my KK rep Patricia and always felt she just wanted the best for the cats. They really care. And now he's living his best cat life. read more

The staff at KittyKind is thorough, and they make sure that you are ready to care for a cat, have realistic expectations of the expense involved, and have thought through what cat-proofing your home really means (this includes a home visit to inspect windows to make sure your new friend doesn't swan dive into courtyard of the Gracie Mews). Kathy followed up after we took Marx and Lenin home (the names their original owner gave them, and they just stuck :) to make sure we were all doing well, and was available to answer questions any time that I had them. About six months after we adopted, another volunteer reached out to help raise funds for a cat they had rescued who needed medical assistance, and we gladly helped out. I had the best experience here recently. I started out by fostering a cat for a few weeks. The volunteers and staff have been incredibly supportive each step of the way and I have now adopted the foster kitty. They went out of their way to make sure everything was working out and were extremely helpful with all of my questions. I've adopted cats in the past and this is by far one of the most compassionate and well-run cat adoption organizations. I highly recommend them. read more

It breaks my heart to read all these horrible reviews of Kitty Kind. Not one of them is legitimate which bothers me even further. Reviews about cats getting sick 2 years after adoption? Reviews about not getting a cat you wanted. Listen....you are adopting a cat that was found either on the street or was surrendered from a home. That is a chance you take. Kitty Kind makes them completely ready for adoption when they are shown in the stores, and just because they have FIV or some illness does not make them "unadoptable". Would you turn away a child because it had cancer? Ridiculous. I volunteer for Kitty Kind and have for quite a while by cleaning cages and socializing. I understand how frustrating it is when you do not get the cat you want, but there are hundreds (literally) to choose from. If anything, be happy that cat found a loving home. It's horrible to hear about bad experiences with volunteers, but I am hoping understand not to talk to cleaners (like myself) because I don't know anything about adoption. People are constantly coming up to me and others asking about the cats, and unfortunately we have a job to do (and quickly) that we are not paid for and there is usually 1 adoption rep on site who can answer your questions. We don't discriminate against food preference. That is just ridiculous, I know that for sure. Kitty Kind is a non profit so of course there is going to be some kind of disorganization within, but these people are all here out of the goodness of their heart and truly want the best for these animals. I wish I had read some of these reviews before I visited KittyKind at Petco. After months of looking (not impulsive by any means), I found a kitten I was interested in on PetFinder. I emailed and was told I could come see him. Everything is great so far. We went in after work and all the KittyKind workers and volunteers were talking with each other or texting. It was hard to get their attention, but finally we got them to show us the cat we were interested in. We knew he was the one. His personality matched our current cat's, for whom we were looking for a playmate/friend for. Then came the interrogation - oops, I mean "interview". Let me preface this by saying that we have owned multiple, very healthy cats over the years. We are experienced and very caring of our cats. This didn't matter to our interviewer. She criticized us for the food we fed our cat, which was vet-recommended and not cheap by any means. Grain-free, organic, etc. etc. She asked how often we take our cat to the vet. We said since we've only had him for less than a year, we haven't yet, besides to get his initial shots and microchip, and that one time he was acting strange and I was worried (which turned out to be nothing). I never felt more judged in my entire life. She made it seem like we were neglecting our cat. We told her that we have a large outdoor space that we let our cat out, but we always supervise him when he's there. Not good enough for her, either. She asked if we had screens on our windows and if they were bolted in. We told her we never open the windows, another response she was not satisfied with. This went on for 45 minutes, not including the three times she stopped to text and one time she went to talk to a volunteer. We were rejected. I checked back a few weeks later and this kitten was still there, available for adoption, which broke our hearts because in that time he could have been living with us instead of the tiny cage, which brings me to my next point... The cages. They seemed a little overcrowded, but not too unusual unfortunately for shelters, but man, the SMELL. I've been to many shelters and adoption agencies and am familiar with the cat smell, but at KittyKind, they were filthy. While the volunteers were standing around texting, the cages stank and were filled with urine and feces. I feel so bad for these cats. Overall, the people at KittyKind are crazy. The volunteers seemed pretty nice, but the staff were lunatics. Despite our extensive, healthy history of owning cats, we were denied and we didn't even proceed to the next step of an in-home visit (which in and of itself I feel is kind of crazy for cat adoption). I don't know how anyone manages to adopt from these lunatics with their rigorous standards. read more

My wife and I adopted a 5 month old cat from the Petco in Union Square a few months ago. He was found in a collapsed building, his mother and siblings had all been crushed. What impresses me most about Kitty Kind (besides the awesomeness that is no kill animal adoption groups) is that every time I have taken him back to the Petco to get his complimentary booster shots, the volunteers remember his name. Everyone seems to really care about the welfare of the animals and even though they seem to be a little overwhelmed at times (that Petco is a madhouse), if you are patient they are always happy to help you. The volunteer who was there when I took the cat home even gave me his personal phone number to call him if I had questions and he called me several days later to check in. The adoption fee was very reasonable and given that it included free shots and neutering, was actually incredibly cheap. I plan on donating money to this group regularly in the future. read more

I will give them 2 stars for legitimately taking time to match cat to person, but the generosity stops there. We went to the Petco Union Square location, filled out an application, and received no response until several days later when I reached out to find out we were denied. As a potential first-time cat owner, I was pretty dismayed by the outright denial... especially when we have put in a lot of time and thought of whether this is the right decision / we're ready, purchased necessary supplies, etc. Anyway, just be prepared to be denied unless you are an exactly perfect fit and answer all of their cat care questions correctly. read more

We adopted our second cat Ziggy (a six-month-old beauty queen rock star princess, if I do say so myself) from KittyKind at the Petco at Union Square. Their cats are obviously well cared for, and when we expressed interest in adopting Zig, the people who we talked to and who later interviewed us were extremely helpful and wonderful. Our first cat is kind of a diva (no offense, Chloe) and we were worried that she would be too much of a mean girl to the little one, but KittyKind taught us how to do introductions (I obviously Googled it for weeks beforehand, too). They also had it clearly marked on Ziggy's cage that she loved other cats and would make for an excellent sister. I've read some of the other reviews here, and I personally agree with KittyKind's philosophy on feeding your cats high-quality food. I've learned over the years that it's a touchy subject for some, but I was happy to hear that our kitty was getting fed nothing but the best since being rescued by KittyKind, and they were happy to hear that we are pretty serious about continuing her healthy diet. (As is our vet!) Anywho, we met Miss Zig Zag on a Wednesday, and by Friday night she was in our apartment AKA her forever home. KittyKind took our references and after learning from our vet that we were obviously good cat parents, they trusted we'd be loving cat-parents. They set up a home visit appt on Friday morning and it was clear to us that our kitty was seriously loved by her foster mother. We've been in correspondence for a while, as KittyKind likes making sure their cats are happy, and because I am neurotic about loving my kitties, in case this Yelp review hasn't yet made that clear. I'd highly recommend them to anyone, and feel indebted to them for saving our new family member from a life on the streets -- don't tell her, but Ziggy is too precious to make it a day in the Big Apple. read more

I've adopted two cats from Kitty Kind (one a year ago, one last weekend), and on both occasions I've had nothing but wonderful things to say about these guys. First of all, they make sure you know what you're getting into, and won't send a cat home with anyone who isn't going to take care of them. Which makes me happy. Secondly, they follow up with you once you've got the cat home, arrange all the necessary vet appointments for kittens, and make sure you have all the support you could possibly need. I literally was given home phone numbers just in case I had any kitten-related questions. Thirdly, and most importantly, both the cats I've gotten from them are wonderful. I loved adopting with Kittykind - I don't think it could have gotten any better. I'm a first time pet owner, but I'm also very very Type A, so I had lots of book knowledge about caring for a cat, but no real life experience. I was kind of nervous about speaking with an adoption rep because I'd read horror stories about the way they treat first-time pet owners (they assume you're flighty and adopting on a whim and that you'll be a horrible caregiver). That said, Stephen at Kittykind made me feel really secure about adopting my new cat, Tika. After talking with me for a bit, he reassured me that I was as prepared as I could get, and actually walked with me through the store to get food/litterbox/toys/brushes/etc. He was available 24/7 when I needed him after I took Tika home to answer my many, many questions and to help with advice and medicine when Tika got a slight cold. I couldn't have been happier, and the entire process couldn't have been more painless. Adoption experience aside, every time I went in to Kittykind at Petco (I went three times, once on a Saturday and twice on weeknights), there were always numerous volunteers cleaning the cages and spending time with the cats. These are clearly people who care about animals, and who want to help in any way they can. In conclusion - fantastic experience, great and helpful people, and if I decide Tika needs a playmate I'd go back in a heartbeat! read more
