The volunteers and staff have been incredibly supportive each step of the way and I have now adopted the foster kitty. They went out of their way to make sure everything was working out and were extremely helpful with all of my questions. I adopted my cat here after seeing him at the Kitty Kind booth in Petco. He was sitting by himself in a cage and the Kitty Kind volunteers were very thorough in explaining to me his temperament and history. They said he was a "calm and cool" one but he also loves human contact. I didn't really believe that a cat with such a great personality could be a stray so they allowed me to put on gloves and pet him -- he put his paws on my arm and gazed at me in the most nonchalant way! I took him home that day. I started by fostering him, before moving on to adoption. Kitty Kind said they found him in a parking lot buried in snow, and he wasn't in the best of health when I first took him home. It was my first time fostering a cat and he needed several veterinary visits as well as a "starter kit" of canned and dried food, but Kitty Kind was very good about providing the support I needed to foster a cat. In the end, I decided I couldn't part with him so I discussed the adoption option with Kitty Kind and they were delighted! They even gave me a free bag of cat food. The only thing I would recommend is that when deciding to foster or adopt a cat with Kitty Kind, make sure to copy down the contact information of the volunteer representative you are dealing with. My representative was extraordinary patient and kind with my questions and she would follow up on my cat's progress about every other week so I really lucked out. However, when I went into Petco to discuss my cat's progress with other volunteers, they were not always familiar with my case. This is somewhat understandable given that they are after all, a no-kill shelter. Still, it may save you time to deal with one or two representatives who really know your cat! I had a terrible experience with KittyKind. In 2002, a cat of mine passed away from Renal Failure. I have had cats my whole life and know how to care for them and love them. I was finally ready after about 9 months to find a new cat to bring into my life. Petco at 14th Street was near my job so I would wander in and look at the adoption area and wait until a cat and I made eye contact- the kind that says "We were made for each other". After about 3 weeks of looking for this spark, I found it. An older female cat (4 years old) named Hart and I shared a moment, and I knew- She's the one. I went up to one of the volunteers and said I was interested in Hart (who by the way was feral, had a clipped ear because she had been neutered and returned to her cat colony, and she had bad teeth from eating on the streets and was believed to have FIP, which is not always fatal and testing resukts are not conclusive. Still, I wanted this cat- an older feral cat with a clipped ear, rotten teeth and a potentially fatal disease. And a KK rep (a bit kookie, wearing a wig and grasping her purse closely to her chest), I spoke to said NO to me within 5 minutes. Conversation went like this: KK rep: "What do you feed your cats?" Me: "well usually a vet-recommended dry food" KK: " we dont adopt to people who feed their cats dry food" ME: Im happy to adapt and feed wet food KK: have you had cats before? me: yes, for the past 20 years. My most recent cat passed away last year KK: what was the cause ME: renal failure KK: thats because you fed her dry food. And we dont adopt to people who feed dry food, so we cant adopt to you." WTF!?!? She accused me of killing my beloved cat of 14 years AND wasnt going to give Hart the opportunity for a great home. Insane. So I went over to a woman who looked like she was in charge, relatively normal looking and communicative. I told her that one of the volunteers was out of bounds with me. She said "Im just a volunteer, the woman you spoke to is in charge" (great, I thought. Im screwed) WEIRD SIDE NOTE: The incident was actually written up - unbeknownst to me- in a Salon.com expose on cat ladies. I wanted Hart. and I wasnt going to get her. I went back a few days later hoping to speak to a different rep, but nutty boss lady was there. I went back a third time ready to beg. I spoke to the volunteer who I had talked to the first day, and she decided to make an exception (and crazy boss lady was out of town). To make a long story short, Hart (who I renamed Sweetheart, and then Sweetie) and I lived happily ever after for many years. And to think KK almost prevented what turned out to be a very good life for Hart. Disgusting. Many other orgs to choose from. Add an extra K to KK, and thats what they are like. Shameful. read more

I will give them 2 stars for legitimately taking time to match cat to person, but the generosity stops there. We went to the Petco Union Square location, filled out an application, and received no response until several days later when I reached out to find out we were denied. As a potential first-time cat owner, I was pretty dismayed by the outright denial... especially when we have put in a lot of time and thought of whether this is the right decision / we're ready, purchased necessary supplies, etc. Anyway, just be prepared to be denied unless you are an exactly perfect fit and answer all of their cat care questions correctly. read more

I volunteered with Kitty Kind as a foster home for almost a year before deciding to adopt. They can be a bit intense at the start because they want to make sure they're not sending a cat into a dangerous or abusive situation. The volunteers there will ask a lot of questions and do a home visit as a followup. After that they were amazing to work with all the way and the people I talked to with were passionate and responsive. When I finally broke down and decided to adopt, they asked me what I ultimately wanted in a cat. It took a few weeks as they kept a lookout for the right cat for me, but they let me know as soon as they had a match. Mowgli is a beautiful, playful, and affectionate cat. 10/10 would adopt from them again... if I had enough space in my apartment for another cat =( read more

I'll be honest, the whole reason why I came here to adopt a cat was because of the proximity to work. I didn't even think of looking up YELP REVIEWS for an adoption agency. The whole reason I'm leaving a review now, is due to the fact it came up on my feed and I was curious what people wrote. There's a mixed bag of good and reviews about Kitty Kind. I can see why there are 1 stars and I can also see why there are 5 stars. I am giving this place 4 stars because there definitely needs to be some sort of structure here. But I'll get into that later. When I first came here with intent to adopt, I saw a cat that I wanted and asked about it. I was told that the adoption agent was not in and would be there at 6. 6:15 rolls around and the agent shows up. I tell her my cat of interest and she told me about him. She said I could "meet" him, which meant holding him or petting him. So I agreed. turns out this guy didn't like me. So I ask about a different cat. He's a cuddle monster. Great! Let me get him! Not so fast. I need to go through a screening process. I was taken aback at what this entailed, but looking back, I'm glad they did this. Cat hoarders exist, and this is never healthy for a feline. Would you like to share a 1 bedroom apartment with 10 other people? No, didn't think so. They do this for the safety and the health of the cat. They check your windows basically, and they tell you it's so the cat can't escape... But I believe it's really for the overcrowding factor. In the screening process they also ask you questions like who will take care of the cat. If you go on vacation, who is going to take care of the cat. How much money you plan on spending. And a few other questions that I can't remember. I feel as though these are what some 1 star reviewers are referring about the adoption process. Listen, I get where they're coming from. They want to get cats adopted by one person. Forever. It's not fair to the cat to go from home to home. We've adopted 2 cats from Kitty Kind. After the first screening, we didn't need to go through another for the 2nd cat. Additionally, you can foster with intent to adopt. We had to do this, as we didn't know how our 1st cat would react to the 2nd and vice versa. Turns out, their personalities clashed and it was really taking a toll on the health of the 2nd cat. So we unfortunately had to bring her back. Thankfully they recommended a different cat. We still have her and they're doing quite well with each other. On top of this, they take care of the first vet visit, and any neuter/spay visits as needed. They even follow up with emails asking how the cats are doing. They want to make sure the cats are doing well in their new forever-home. I see nothing wrong with their process. With all that being said, there is a bad side to this, and it's just a minor flaw in the whole process. When I wanted to adopt both times, I had to deal with the people in Petco. I don't mean the workers, I mean the customers. I get it, cats are cute. You want to look at them. You want to go up to their cage and pet them. I totally get this. But because of this, it can take a long time for me to even talk to a KittyKind rep about adopting. Mainly because these people who are just passing through want to talk to the people in charge, and from what I hear, mostly about nothing in particular to adopting a cat. Because of this, the times I've gone when I NEEDED to talk to a Kitty Kind rep, I had to wait until a conversation with a petco customer was over. They do excuse themselves sometimes if they know you're coming, but if you're a new adopter... They have no idea what your intents are. There's no structure in the adoption process prior to the screening. After you talk to one of them, and fill out paperwork, the rest is fine as it's through emails. But christ, there was a few times I have waited before the time the Kitty Kind rep arrived and got cut in front of by someone who just happened to walk up to the rep before me. My suggestion would maybe have some kind of scheduling for adoption. Perhaps online? Hell, you don't even need to get digital on this. You could just do a sign in sheet. SOMETHING. All-in-all, as a no-kill adoption agency, I believe Kitty Kind is pretty good, and worth your time to finding a forever cat. read more

They put the interest of the cats first, and make sure the home and adopters are a good match. They do a safety home check, and they have a trial period to make sure it's a good fit. We adopted our cat Cookie (previously known as Matilda), from Kitty Kind @ Petco Union Square back in July and it was a great experience. Everyone was very friendly and helpful, the application process was pretty easy and I love that they really do care about their rescues so much, taking care in vetting every potential adopter and doing home visits. Also all their cats are really healthy and well cared for. Our girl Cookie had some anti social behavior in the first few months, and I reached out to Kitty Kind who provided help from a cat behaviorist for free. They offered to swap her out for another rescue cat if things didn't improve, but we didn't want to give up on our girl and we are glad we didn't. She finally came around after 3 months and is now happier and has accepted us. She's still not the cuddliest cat around but she shows her love in her own ways or when she's in the mood :). Many of these older cats have been through such bad experiences, it's heartbreaking and I encourage anyone who has the space and means to adopt an adult rescue, please do so. Kitty Kind were great. They made sure we had all the information we needed when we adopted our cat baby, were super responsible about making sure we were the right parents to our cat (Fergus) and were really considerate of our schedules when they came to do the home visit. The staff were helpful and clearly took good care of the cats. When our kitten had some problems with his bowel movements they provided us with medicine to help him, and when he was adjusting to his new home and had a few accidents out of the litter box they offered cat counseling. Thankfully this was not necessary and Fergus has settled happily into his new home for 6 months now. He is healthy, happy and HUGE! We suspect he might be part tiger. :) read more

I knew for a long time that I was destined to be a cat mom, my fur baby fever only intensified when I went to the Meow Parlour. This is where I learned of KittyKind. I was nervous after reading the Yelp reviews, but I decided to go ahead and send an email about a cat I saw on their website anyway. I was encouraged to meet with an adoption counselor at Petco. I've always loved cats but have never had cats, I brought along a friend with tons of cat (and other animal experience) to come with me as I feared for a difficult process. These ladies are intimidating, but as other Yelpers have said before it's because they really care. I met with Lauren and filled out a form, she asked a lot of questions and it felt pretty intense but by the end we were talking about when she could come over for a home inspection. The original cat I saw on the website had an application in, but Lauren got on the phone with another one of the volunteers, who knows about all the cats - told her about what I was looking for, what my lifestyle was and I felt like I was being set up by a cat matchmaker. She gave me a list of potential matches. But ultimately, a quiet orange tabby caught my eye. After some talk, we decided she might be a good fit and I signed up to "foster with intent to adopt". Lauren came to my apartment a few days later, she suggested I get window guards and have a screen put in my bathroom window (which I never open) but I knew putting a screen in would be worth it. I picked her up from Petco soon after that knowing I would never bring her back. The folks at KittyKind really are amazing, they can be tough but like the rest say, they just really want their cats to have good homes. They are really involved and invested, Lauren has been sooooo supportive, answering questions about all the little things and concerns of a new cat mom. It's been over a month and we've remained in touch for advice and for updates on how my baby girl is adjusting. read more

You may like KittyKind because you found a nice cat/kitten with them... and they charged you for the adoption fee regardless the donations they take year round... If you like KittyKind and will post a nice review about them, please call before you post your review and ask them to help a stray/injured cat you found and don't know what to do with the poor animal... This will change your mind... NOTE: KitKind does a nice job helping what cats they have on hand.... Adoption fee is necessary so people will not adopt the cats as food for bigger "pets" (monsters...), and it makes people takes more seriously the adoption... This review is about my experience when I asked for help with a sick cat that somebody left to die on the street and I needed their experience with this. Kitty Kind is a great rescue that really cares about animals. The volunteers know the personality and quirks of each cat, so they are super helpful in helping find which cat(s) will be your perfect (purrrfect?) match. The organization commits to the cats for life (if you are unable to care for your cat they ask you to return it to them rather than taking it to a shelter) so they have a vested interest in making sure both you and the animal are happy. The approval process was thorough, but quick and straightforward. The volunteer we worked with (Aimee) was friendly and easygoing. She was (and still is) available around the clock for questions and advice. We had a great experience and we love our new kitty. Would recommend. read more

I understand the negative impressions people get from this place. For months I had eyed the cats inside of Petco in Union Square and it seemed that every time I tried to show my interest I was ignored. However, months later I visited the Meow Parlour in the Lower East Side and fell in love with a cat there. They told me my only shot at adopting her was to email Kitty kind. So I did and I got no reply. But I wasn't going to let that stop me. The very next day I went to Petco in Union Square and this time, I wasn't just looking at a cat, I actually knew which cat I wanted. I even brought my other cats last vet checkup papers with me. After explaining to Aimee that I had seen this cat at Meow Parlour and wished to adopt her, she sat me down and asked me a few questions. The entire interview process lasted about 5 minutes. She told me they would need to meet my boyfriend and do a home visit to check my windows, all of which I was fine with. However, after texting her photos of my windows and being in communication with her, she felt comfortable letting me take the kitty home without a home visit or meeting my boyfriend. Within a week I was able to go pick up the cat from Meow Parlour and take her home. It took a couple days for her and my other cat to get along, and Aimee was so friendly and kind and helpful every time I texted her to ask any question at all. I am going this weekend to finalize the adoption as I was allowed to foster her with no fee up front until I found out if it would work with my other cat. Since taking her home, there has been no pressure to adopt her or bring her back. Things that I think really help if you are looking to adopt from Kitty Kind: 1) Be serious. If you're just looking, they probably wont waste their time. 2) Be ready to answer questions. They were all questions related to taking good care of a cat. 3) Be responsible. If you fail their interview, then you probably aren't taking the BEST care of a cat that you could be. They will keep the cat until a better potential owner comes along. One who takes their cat to the vet every year for a check up. Feeds them wet food. Ensures their windows are properly secured with screens. Does not let their cat outside. Does not wish to declaw their cat. etc. I am not meaning to insult anyone or their experience. I am sure many disagree with my opinions here. Just know that if you are serious about adopting a cat, and taking the proper care once you do so - then you will have an absolutely great experience with this company. This place was great! My boyfriend and I had been seriously looking for a kitty for about week with no luck when we decided to stop by KittyKind. After taking some time to check out each cat, we told Patricia that we were looking to adopt. She was very helpful and asked which ones we were interested in and then let us into their cages. She told us about their histories and where they came from. We decided on one that we loved (Cori Bella), and she got us an application to fill out. She even took us over to the food aisle and showed us which brands she thought were best. Next step was the home visit, and Patricia offered to come to our place that same night as soon as she was off. Unfortunately she didn't make it because of road closures, but set a time to come over the very next day. When she got to our apartment, she checked our windows to make sure our kitty would be safe, talked to us a bit, and that was that. We picked up Cori Bella the next day! The staff was helpful with the paperwork and seemed to be very excited that kitty was going to a good home. Since then, Patricia has checked in to see how everything is going, and to make sure Cori Bella is doing ok. We had such a great experience here, and love our kitty so much! If there's one thing in this world I'm sure about, it's that the volunteers at Kitty Kind *really* like cats. My first experience adopting a cat was at a shelter in St. Louis about 7 years ago. I went in, found a great little guy, and walked out with my amazing Chief Snuggles. This will not be your experience at kitty kind. You'll interviewed, you'll need to fill out a questionnaire, you'll need to schedule a time for them to visit your home, and at the end you're not at all guaranteed to walk home with the kitten/cat you had your heart set on. I got the sense that there are many things that could get you disqualified - for example, when I casually mentioned I often work 12 hour days they became reluctant to let me adopt the kittens I had in my mind. And that's legit. As I mentioned at the top, these people, who are all volunteers I believe, seem to care quite deeply and just like you wouldn't want to ship a human child off to the first willing adopter without asking any questions, they want to make sure they're finding a good home for their cats. It also means that they (in my case, Aimee) are way more involved and helpful post-adoption than I had anticipated. They arrange the neuter/spaying appointments (and covered the costs), provide food/litter recommendations, and provide their email/cell in case you have any questions and check in repeatedly during the early goings to see how things are. TL;DR they're super helpful and nice, very involved, and while you could get denied for some reason, if you don't you'll end up with one or more awesome cats like I did. read more

I was in complete shock when reading other people's reviews on KittyKind. Your experiences sound horrible! I can't even imagine. Fortunately I faired a bit better with KittyKind, though I felt that the staff/volunteers were completely way in over their head and didn't give me the attention I would have liked when I saw the cats at Petco. In fact, two of the men I talked to were downright rude. Luckily that was not the case with the Irish (I think?) woman I dealt with over email when working through the adoption of my cat, Picnic. She was very prompt in her responses and checked in with me regularly after I took Picnic home. What I was not entirely happy about was the vet that KittyKind uses. I took advantage of the free visit within the first week of adopting my cat and found myself being reminded several times by the staff that I shouldn't have had a Saturday appointment (which I did). Kitty Kind is a fantastic adoption organization. It's no secret that New York has an obscene amount of homeless animals, and any organization working to find these animals happy homes should be commended. I adopted my cat, Weegee, about a year ago from their outpost at Petco. The adoption process was thorough, but easy. The adoption price of $125 is more than reasonable, considering it includes all of the animal's housing & food up until adoption, spaying/neutering & any other necessary medical care, and shots. I picked up kitty two days after being approved for adoption, and the transfer was quick and relatively painless. A few days after arriving in her new home, Weegee developed a bit of a cold. I contacted kitty kind, and was given antibiotics free of charge. After her course of medication she was as happy and healthy as could be. She has been a loving companion, sleeping in my bed, following me everywhere. She greets me at the door every day when I come home from work, and we've bonded to the point where she even follows me into the bathroom. Some people might be bothered by having such an attached kitty, but I love knowing that I was able to help lift a homeless cat out of an unfortunate life and give her a happy home. I don't think it's fair to hold the organization responsible for cranky or unfriendly cats, and before adoption it's absolutely necessary to understand that your new pet may take much more time than expected to adjust to your new home. They provide TONS of resources for cats & humans who are having trouble adjusting to each other, and while "returns" are not encouraged, they will always take a cat back if it's not working out. Now I have a new little friend who will hopefully be with me for a very long time, and she's only here thanks to kitty kind. read more

Two years ago I adopted 2 beautiful kittens, Jenga and Ella, from KittyKind, and from that first day until now, it has been nothing but a great experience. As someone who has adopted shelter animals before, I was very pleased with how caring ant thoughtful the people at KittyKind were. I found their screening process thorough, and not at all unreasonable (I heard them turn down a few clearly unqualified applicants). They also really went above and beyond what most shelters do by calling me to check up on the kittens a month after the adoption, and posting our story on their website. The two kittens I adopted both had upper respiratory infections when I got them, and KittyKind sent me home with meds for both of them, and said I could come back for a second round of antibiotics for free (which I did). They also referred me to a great low-fee spay & neuter vet for the kittens. So helpful! I am also glad that KittyKind insisted that the kittens be adopted in a pair. Jenga and Ella are inseparable best buddies and I am sure they are so much happier together than they would be alone. I highly recommend KittyKind! read more

Kitty Kind was a positive experience for me, and now I have a great cat! I originally found Iggy through the foster parent, and then went through these guys to adopt him. You go to their shelter in the Petco Union Square and you can meet their adoptees. Once you know who you want, they'll have you fill out paperwork. They make sure you are allowed pets in your building, everyone you live with are okay with it, etc. They set up a home visit, and mostly they want to make sure you have secured screens. If you don't have them, make sure you get them if you want to adopt a cat through them! (You should have secured screens anyway if you want a cat.) Once I was approved and adopted my new cat, they continued to be extremely helpful. Iggy was getting along fine at first but then began to be very stressed out and scared of everything. I contacted the counselor I was using and she gave me advice and then followed up to make sure he was doing well, which now he is! (I think he wasn't used to the loud noises around my apartment, you know how it gets in the city...) They are all volunteers, which is wonderful. It may seem a little chaotic at times, but they will follow through. If you're looking to adopt a cat, I highly recommend Kitty Kind. read more

I contemplated giving this organization 4-Stars instead of 3 because my recent experience with the folks at Kitty Kind was TERRIFIC, considering the location of the Organization. Of course there's a need for Buyer Beware with this group. The shelter location is in a PETCO, for Pete's Sake, not an Animal Hospital!! Not only is the location highly stressful for the animals, but you have a harried Intake Volunteer who has to deal with a bunch of folks who pass by a cage of unwanted kitties and all of a sudden want to adopt, ask questions and fill out forms. All at once. The volunteers should be commended for donating their time to this cause; perhaps Kitty Kind might want to do more outreach and enlist volunteers with a Vet Tech background, maybe that would help with the chaotic atmosphere. It is the responsibility of the future owner to do their due diligence, and take the time to get to know the cat by visiting it at least twice (a policy that should be considered by KittyKind) before considering adopting. It doesnt surprise me that ferals got into the mix at Kitty Kind, but hey if you cant tell the difference between a Feral and a House Cat, you have no business adopting. I had a wonderful experience adopting my 1-yr old-calico, Hester Louise who is now named Mrs. Sweet aka Siao-Pao . I visited her 3 times over 2 weeks to make sure she was the right cat. By this, I mean not pulling her out of her cage like most Lookey Loos but rather letting the cat sense that I was interested. Most social non-feral kitties will eventually climb out of their catbed to see what is going on. I did this during the 3 times I visited and sure enough the cat was purring and rubbing my hand while still in the cage. I also had a thorough conversation with the Intake Person and the cat's Foster Mom who was honest and told me Hester had a cold a few months ago (which, depending on how you look at it , could be a respiratory infection) but was fine now. Its been 2 months. Siao-Pao is healthy (no doubt now that she is out of a cage 24-7). She is about to get a Kitty Condo for Xmas and we couldn't be happier. read more

The two of them were extremely helpful, Davy even took me around Petco to help me choose the right foods, toys, and litter for healthy kittens. When I adopted the kittens, one of them had a cold - Davy was available all the time for me to call and ask questions. They provided me with medicine for the Sawyer (my orange tabby) and were happy to see him whenever I brought him in. Just this weekend I brought both my kittens (now 5 months) in to them just so they could check up on him (they had just been neutered and I wanted to have them check to see if they were recovering well. Davy and Dawn go way above and beyond, they really care about their cats and they are extremely knowledgeable. My husband and I have two cats that we adopted from KittyKind, in 2007 and 2008, and our experience with their organization was always top-notch. The ladies we worked with seem to care deeply for cats, and when they came in person to examine our apartment, it was clear that they truly wanted their animals to find the right home. Unlike some of the other reviewers here, we didn't find their standards to be overly severe. These are our first cats, and they have worked out great (one has health issues that we knew about going in). Moreover, our liaison at KittyKind has always been available to answer questions, recommend vets, and so on. My roommate and I adopted 2 cats from Kitty Kind a couple of months ago. We picked two cats that had not been living together and both were in great health. The first couple of days were a bit tumultuous with some hissing and fighting but honestly this is totally normal. Now to two of them are inseparable and can often be found sleeping together on the bed. The cats are perfect and I knew what I was getting into. I've always owned cats and sometimes you just get one that is not affectionate and does not like to be held. One of mine does, one doesn't. It seems like some reviewers expect every cat to be more like a doll to be played with than a living animal with a mind all its own. As far as Kitty Kind goes the two cats I adopted were in perfect health and everyone I've dealt with at Kitty Kind has been very helpful and definitely went out of their way for the cats. I adopted a cat from there 4 years ago and because it was successful, it's the ONLY reason this hell hole gets 2 stars. To the people defending Kitty Kind with raving reviews while putting the blame on other reviewers and dismissing fully detailed encounters with this place, yay for you. Either you are reviewing on a throw-away account on Yelp to begin with, you know the people there personally or you were just extremely lucky. Because of the experience we had with Kitty Kind, our other cats were adopted elsewhere. Which is a shame because the only ones truly screwed over are these cats. Before our cat's adoption, I had made the first initial visit and my girlfriend at the time made the other 2-3 visits until she brought him home. When I went, I hadn't spoken to anyone so I had no clue what we were in for. I had gone in one day after looking around Barnes and Noble and fell in love with one of the black cats immediately. My girlfriend went in later that week and her first encounter with one of the women there at the time was fine. She then went for round two regarding interviewing and the lady she spoke to was a rude bitch. She treated my girlfriend like she was some horrible cat owner because her answers didn't strictly match up with what this lady wanted to hear. Keep in mind, my girlfriend has had multiple cats ALL of her life. You can't get any better than her to give a cat to. My girlfriend nearly walked out and told the lady to go screw herself but she kept at it because she knew how much I had already had my heart set on this cat. In the end, they agreed luckily to the adoption and I love my cat with all my heart, knowing how he is extremely lucky we got him out of that place. Also a couple of things they lied on....it's like they had no clue and never fostered the cat so they pulled info out of nowhere to market him to potential owners. -That he's a lap cat ....oh no he's not -they said he was younger than he was....oh yeah? our vet wants a word with you -He loved toys or the laser light or something....yeah no, he won't even use a cat bed or a scratching post. All he loves is a good blanket to lie on. Or perches on top of a couch. But I love him all the same and he is very responsive when I call his name. About a year ago, I figured I'd stop by again. Big mistake. It was so depressing seeing those cats in their cages. What was worse were the two idiots in front of one cat's cage. Customers, not from Kitty Kind. They were poking their fingers in the cage and laughing at the cat. The cat dropped his toy out and they dangled it in front of the cat going "Look! He lost his F***ing toy!" And I look to the lady at the desk by the cages. I don't remember if she was on her phone or reading a magazine but she was completely uninterested in what was going on. Had no clue I was even staring at her. How do you sit there and let people do that to the cats? They are YOUR responsibility until they are adopted. I was so annoyed and upset, I had to walk out. With this all said, please keep the cats in mind if you attempt to adopt from them. It's better to try and get them away from Kitty Kind than to avoid the place altogether. The only ones who lose are these cats. But this is all a fair warning for what you are in for. And from the sound of recent reviews on Yelp of those who came in after me, it has not changed. read more

Really grateful to KittyKind - I worked with Stephen to adopt Mischief- His name is now Mooshka and is so wonderful and charming. who at times lives up to his name but generally just a happy loving boy! Stephen was so helpful and the others at KittyKind with the different minor issues I had, and all is well at home .He came down with a cold and they nursed me to sanity while i nursed Mooshka to health-. I have nothing but good things to say about KittyKind. Miriam and her staff of caring volunteers give more love and attention to each and every cat in their care then they've ever had before. Most of the cats are strays and ferals rescued from the street and given a chance to have a safe and happy life, some are unfortunately displaced from homes for any number of reasons, and some still are unceremoniously dumped at KittyKind in the morning. I know this because my wife and I have been rescuing and fostering homeless cats in Brooklyn for the past year, and we've worked exclusively with KittyKind to help find 'forever homes' for them. KittyKind is no bootleg, black market operation. They have a very strict adoption policy- not just anybody can come in and grab any cat they want. There are forms to fill out, interviews, and home checks. KittyKind also keeps in touch with the adopters throught the cat's life to make sure that all is well and they are loved and well taken care of. Granted, I haven't adopted a cat through KittyKind, but as a rescuer and fosterer I am more than happy to work with them because I KNOW for a fact that they try to find perfect matches for the cats and they get to know potential adopters and they don't let a cat go until they are sure of the situation. It's impossible to not get attached to cats that you rescue from the street, and it makes me happy to know that KittyKind cares about their welfare and improving their lives as much as I do. Stop in at the Union Square Petco when you get a chance and see for yourself how well these cats are cared for, how much love and attention the volunteers give them. Have a chat with Miriam and you'll hear in her voice the love and dedication she has for these rescued cats, then you'll wonder, like me, where all of these 1 star reviews are coming from. read more

First of all I would like to say that it is a shame that certain people did not have a great experience with Kitty Kind. Rescue agencies like Kitty Kind are unbelievable for what they do. The time, effort and money that they dedicate to a cause that is an enormous issue(and one that our great city turns a somewhat blind eye to) is unbelievable. We have adopted 2 AWESOME cats from Kitty Kind at the Union Square location. Both times we had to go through the adoption process even though we had adopted previously from them and pay the fee...so what. They are there to protect innocent animals who have already been through enough torture. Is there a rigorous process to adopt an animal? Yes. Shouldn't there be? Many of these animals wouldn't be at Kitty Kind if there was a rigorous process to get an animal to begin with. People get an animal and then just dump them when their landlord finds out that they have them and shouldn't or when they get bored or if the animal does something to upset them. Despicable! The people who run these rescues are subjected to stories like these and FAR, FAR worse everyday and are looking out for the animal not you. Also, they are not Veterinarians. They are passing on the info that is given to them by vets. There is no exact science on determining a cat's exact age. Sure, look at the teeth, but you still don't know for sure. I am so sorry for anyone who lost a beloved pet but just think if you hadn't adopted him/her what kind of life would they have had? At least you know that you gave him/her the best possible life in the time that you had them. That is no reason to criticize this agency. About two months ago my boyfriend and I adopted two 4 month old male kittens from KittyKind--located in the Petco in Union Square. The two of them were in a cage together, and we instantly fell in love with them. Since the two were brought in together, they only wanted owners who would adopt them together. We happily kept the brothers together and are extremely happy we did. Both of them are very friendly and playful. Don't expect to take home your kitten in the same day. There is paper work, an in-store interview and a home interview. They like to take extra precautions to ensure you and the cats are the right fit for each other. The process may take around 2-3 days. There is a small adoption fee of $125 for each kitten, which includes their booster shots and neutering. Every time we have gone to KittyKind we can tell all the volunteers genuinely care about the animals. Just be sure you have time and be patient, because they are usually pretty busy. One of the volunteers went above and beyond for us when we adopted our kittens. Unfortunately Hurricane Irene was coming and the trains were shutting down at noon. One of the volunteers was very sweet and rushed to our home for our home interview, and dropped of the kittens so we could stay inside with them all weekend. Since the adoption KittyKind volunteers have followed up over time to make sure everything is going smoothly and to answer any questions we may have. We are very happy with our experience at KittyKind, and we would happily adopt from them again.a read more

It truly pains me to read any negative reviews about KittyKind.. Their mission is to find loving homes for the cats in their care.. This involves an entire network of rescuers and fosterers..all volunteers..who give their time, money and space to find these little guys new homes.. You WILL be judged! Sorry!!! But please put this into some kind of context.... Imagine how hurtful it is for a kitty to have to be re-homed several times.. Any idea how many people fudge the truth about whether or not their building allows cats? How about fudging job travel requirements? How about the fact that vet care is not cheap? How about cats falling through unsecured window screens? How about you already have a cat, or a dog, or a bird, or iguana..or...? Or your child had allergies? Or your house is filled with beautiful plants/flowers that may or may not be toxic for cats? I have volunteered at another rescue and understand a potential adopter's frustration...but sometimes a particular cat is just not a good fit for your current situation.. There will be one that is!:) NOBODY at KittyKind wants to turn down a potential home for a cat that's sitting in a cage...they just don't want it to happen again for that kitty.... And the peeps here will work with you... Over the past 20 years, my husband and I have adopted 3 cats from KittyKind..we've always gone through the same adoption process; vet reference check, home check, etc.. It's actually reassuring to me that they take so much time to find the kitties not just a home, but a forever home... So please exercise a bit of patience, be honest when applying, and understand the scrutiny.. Your eventual furry friend will be all the better for it!:) read more

In short: Great organization with the flaws you'd expect from a volunteer animal shelter in a place as crazy as NYC. In more detail: Had a bit of a rough start with Kitty Kind. Felt like an inquisition when I expressed interest in adopting a cat, with the fellow interviewing me seemingly more interested in finding out why it would be a bad idea for me to adopt than vice versa. Seemed at odds with their mission, but I went with the flow. Though the first guy and I didn't really hit it off, I came back the following day after thinking through some of things we talked about and spoke with a much more enthusiastic individual, which led to the adoption of our first cat. We eventually decided to adopt a second cat as a buddy for the first. I dealt with the original guy, who seemed far more comfortable the second time around. Unfortunately, the new cat turned out not to be compatible for the first. It was here that I started to realize how great Kitty Kind actually was. They spent a lot of time with us working through the emotionally difficult decision to return the second cat to Kitty Kind after several weeks. In fact, it was the original fellow who ended up offering the most support and assurances. In the end we successfully adopted a second cat. Kitty Kind was thorough in their follow ups and months later no mysterious illnesses have manifested. In retrospect, the volunteers I met cared deeply about Kitty Kind's mission. Though a minority seemed a little socially maladjusted at times, I suppose that comes with the territory. I'd recommend the outfit to anyone interested in adopting with the caveat that you should be patient and ready to deal with an odd personality or two. read more

We adopted Mr. Eno from Kitty Kind in May 2016. What can we say about Mr. Eno? We love him... Our Murphy passed away leaving Henrietta all alone - Murphy our long-time resident who was someone's house cat left in a box on the street when I found her, and Henrietta the much younger habituated feral we took in from my sister, it had taken them some time but the two became quite endeared with each other, best of friends. After six weeks of watching Henrietta all alone my partner and I knew she needed a companion. Before long we saw a friend post on Facebook about a cat in need, a sweet older cat whose foster parents were planning to return to their home in Mexico in less than a month, and who really wanted to avoid landing Mr. Eno back in a shelter cage, surrounded by other cats, where his worst would surely come out. We went to meet Mr. Eno at his foster parents' apartment, he was just as much a gentleman as advertised, greeting us at the door and letting us pet him. Knowing he was in need and didn't have much time, we decided to take a chance on him getting along with Henrietta and brought him home. The first two weeks were a nightmare! Upon his arrival, Mr. Eno was beyond distraught, and though we had Henrietta locked in the living room while Eno took the bedroom, her smell in the air was apparently enough to make him vicious. He hissed and clawed and bit when we tried to approach him, and he basically lived under our bed in anger and discomfort for several days. We became scared of him and anxious that we would have to find him a new home. During this time, naturally, Henrietta and Eno began to sniff at the door, stick their paws underneath it, and try to discover what lifeform existed on the other side. We switched them up after a few days, locking Henrietta in the bedroom while giving Eno a chance to explore the rest of the apartment. Honestly, it took about a month just to calm Eno down, and even for another few weeks thereafter as he started to get to know and live with Henrietta, and vice-versa, he frequently went into attack mode. We had many sleepless nights, as Eno would chase Henrietta and bite her back at 2am, 3am, 5am. But we worked hard to condition them and create conditions where they could get along, we fed them near each other, progressively moving their bowls closer together, gave them treats together, and occasionally forced their separation. Every day was a test, but over time the two became accustomed to each other, they became friendly, they became family. Now, six months later, and there is no doubt that bringing Mr. Eno into our lives and home was the best decision we could have made. He has matured into a total gentleman, he is kind, loving, patient, and above all, absolutely adorable. He and Henrietta are the friends we had hoped they would be. It wasn't easy and it didn't happen overnight, but ultimately, there is no greater success to be achieved. We are so grateful to Kitty Kind ... this is not the first time I have introduced cats to each other, but it was the most challenging. Our work was made easier because of Kitty Kind's support and encouragement throughout this process, willingness to answer all our questions, and availability to address and assuage our concerns. I cannot rave enough about how helpful KittyKind was as I fostered-to-adopt my cat, Chloe! They take great care in learning about the cats' personalities to match them to the right owner and living situation. (No other place does this. They directed me to a group of cats to meet and they were so right!) Shortly after I took Chloe in to foster, she had an ear issue that wouldn't go away. They were amazing with covering vet visits and medication. As Chloe was a serious squirmer with her ear drops, a volunteer came to my apartment to help me EVERY DAY for 3 MONTHS as I couldn't hold her alone and put the drops in at the same time. It was an unusual situation (eventually clearing up) but they were incredibly kind and supportive. They may seem overbearing in the interview, but it's because they will do everything in their power to care for these cats. They are very careful about their placements and I can understand why some people may be put off by this. But even the home visit was helpful! I was worried about an antique rug. The volunteer said my antique rug would be fine but probably not another rug (she was right). I also learned a few cat care tips which have been very helpful. They are especially great with first-time cat owners. As a tip, KittyKind partners with Meow Parlour. Ask KittyKind which cats they recommend based on your situation. They care for cats at Petco on Union Square and the safer environment of Meow Parlour in the LES. The leading cat ladies may seem intense, but have patience and you will end up with the love of your life. They are 100% volunteers and truly committed to their charges, wanting the best possible forever-home outcome. Yes, it's not the same as adopting a child. But understand that these volunteers love their cats as if they were their own. And they want to make sure they are going to safe homes and well-informed, loving owners. P.S. It wasn't until after I adopted two cats on separate occasions that I found out some people really have beef with this organization. For those who have been at Petco on the weekends, you can see how hectic things really get in the Kitty Kind adoption section (that's also a great thing and hopefully means tons of cats are being adopted out). I've had to wait nearly 20 minutes just to ask a simple question. Miriam helped me adopt my second kitty, Penelope. She was great. She followed up and was quick to respond to e-mails. There were a few times that I felt like others that volunteer with the organization really preached to me about which foods I should and shouldn't feed my cats. At the same time, I can't imagine feeding my cats anything other than Wellness from now on. They seem to do the best they can given the circumstances. It's easy for people to insult and put down the volunteers and organization, but they are also doing such a great service for the cats that are often dropped off or abandoned and for that I applaud their efforts and appreciate all they do. read more

When I adopted from kittykind they were very thorough with making sure I was the right match for my kitty! At first it may seem a bit discouraging with such a process, but you have to take into consideration that they are looking for forever homes and often times people bring them back months later. It can be very stressful for the poor babies and I can't imagine anyone having the heart to do that! You have to take into account that you are adopting an animal that could be with you for 10+ years, that's a big commitment! After learning that my cat bronco had been shuffled around in several different homes over a short period of time I couldn't blame them for treating our adoption so seriously, and cautiously! After meeting with the adoption crew and going through the proper adoption steps I now have the sweetest, most loving cat in the world thanks to kittykind! I am so happy that I found them, and so grateful for my little babe. I have a lot of respect for the kittykind team for what they do and how cautious they are with their kitties. They care a lot about each one, and truly just want to make sure they will be happy for the rest of their 9 lives in 1 home! I am a very experienced cat person, with a great and loving home for them. The KK people were horrible to me. I did everything they asked, including an up-to-the-minute vet visit for my existing kitty, which cost me $353. The coordinator was hateful and spiteful; she lied and treated me with disrespect. There was one kitty I loved immediately and really wanted. We were perfect for each other and I applied for him. Then, after a few days, the coordinator made a stipulation that to adopt him I would have to adopt another kitty, one that my kitty had supposedly bonded with. OK, fine, not a problem. Then, after another week of stringing me along for these kitties, she gave them to someone else and sent me an F-You email. The people who run Kitty Kind are antisocial parasites (yes, antisocial; look up the psychological markers and you will recognize them). They use homeless kitties to give themselves the veneer of being caring people, so they can feed their poison by hurting innocent would-be adopters. I've seen their sort before. Look at all the negative reviews. We can't all be wrong. They should find a different object for their pathology, one that keeps them away from animals and people, locked in a little room somewhere. read more
