I have to say I was pretty jazzed to check out KJ's only because their menu is reminiscent of Sizzler's, Spires and Denny's. Not to mention, the all-you-can-eat salad and soup bar was calling my name. Hubby and I drove 40 minutes from our home to be dazzled. This place is a tad dated and little dark, but I actually loved that aspect. We were warmly greeted and sat in a booth in the back of restaurant. We also loved that too. Our server was very friendly and helpful. My husband ordered the country fried steak with fries and mac 'n cheese, I opted for the salad bar + half sandwich combo, choosing the cranberry chicken pecan salad sandwich solely due to the glowing yelp reviews. The salad bar was first...the salad mix looks like the bagged American mix you can get at the grocery store. There's a nice variety of dry and veggie toppings, though I wasn't a fan of the carrot chunks in the place of shreds or the yellowing cucumber slices. The salad bar also consists of a nacho, soup, baked potato and ice cream (soft serve) bar, so it's almost like a mini Souplantation. Wished they had the soups labeled, as I had no idea what was what. I think one was a chili and a loaded baked potato soup (which I tried and it was good). The nacho chips were very stale and the chunky potato wedges were very cold. The salad was fresh, though some of the veggie toppings looked and tasted a little old...the ranch dressing was the standard ranch, just average. Their chicken salad sandwich was very good, though a tad under seasoned...needed pepper or salt. Their chicken salad sandwich veggies were super fresh and the bread was thick and soft. My husband was not a fan of the country fried steak. He said that it was obviously a previously frozen reheated vendor-type meal... he expected that, but not such a low-grade frozen flavor. He said it was like a banquet frozen meal. Eek. The fries and fry sauce were good, the mac was average...at least they jazzed it up with a few shreds of cheese on top. We wanted to love this place so bad! There's definitely some merits with the salad bar at least. read more

Don't let the dismal hotel next door fool you. Inexpensive, competent White-people food, attentive but not obnoxious service, convenient. The sign outside should be changed to state LOCALLY OWNED and also BEER AVAILABLE. Server Xander was very good, esp considering he isn't yet old enough to serve beer legally. Bar selection is limited, but adequate, and when I84 is crawling at 6:00PM, you sometimes just want a place you can walk to that is not yet another Mexican joint. It's like Perkins, if it wasn't a chain and had a (small) bar. What it sets out to do, it succeeds. Astonishingly OK. Four stars instead of three because the kids who were working there were atypically nice. read more

We come here often and always love the fresh, home style cooking so we thought we would try it for Thanksgiving. Wow! It was the best home style good old fashioned, just like Mom's Thanksgiving dinner. The only difference for us was that the Turkey's white meat was the most tender and juicy we've ever had (usually the white meat is always dry). The real mashed potatoes, green beans, yams, stuffing and cherry pie dessert were amazingly good. The poor gal that had to keep up on the items coming out to the buffet was so busy, but did a fantastic job at keeping everything full. One thing we have always loved about KJ's is that they are always consistent, the food, the service and they have the best Bloody Mary drink. This will be our new "go to" for our Thanksgiving dinners from now on. read more

The food was pretty good! I had a chicken salad sandwich. It had large chunks of cooked chicken in a mayo type sauce with grapes, celery and I believe walnuts ir pecans. It was really good. Ir was on a hardy bread. It came with choice of side. I had french fries which were well cooked, crisp to the bite. Not a large portion but enough. Service was prompt and no complaints. This place was actually pretty good I thought. Solid buffet with lots of choices and constantly refreshed. I thought the fresh fruit was delicious, coffee was hot, and pretty much anything you were looking for in breakfast was at the buffet. You can order off the menu but for a few bucks more get the buffet. We were served quickly, other places around town had 40 minutes wait times. Place was clean and spacious, good for crowds or large families. I'd visit again! read more

This place has all of the things you could need or like. First off a giant fresh food salad bar! Along with some great menu favorite appetizers like fried mushroom or mozzarella sticks but I must say that my favorite were the fried zucchini's. Paired any of these with their yummy garlic ranch sauce and your in restaurant heaven. My husband got the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and he was one satisfied man. He also had the all you can eat soup and salad bar. I tasted the New England Clam Chowder and it did not disappoint. If you find yourself traveling through Boise, you can't go wrong here. One thing! We were looking for something quick and easy after a long day of driving.... Found this restaurant in our hotel parking lot and decided to give it a try. We were immediately greeted by cheerful staff and seated right away. Everything seemed very clean, and although we did not order the salad bar, it seemed to have a lot of great options. Pros- Service was good from Melanie, she was friendly and precise. Food arrived quickly, hot and as described. Table was clean and well stocked. Great selection of salad dressings. Cons- Parking was difficult, but can be expected when busy. Family restaurant so expected uncontrolled, screaming kids. Pasta was so overcooked that it possibly was done days earlier. Working out of state I'm home every two months for two weeks, we always make it to KJ's at least twice in the time I'm home. There are many options around Meridian and the Boise area and all are good. For an awesome meal with fantastic service at very reasonably fair price we strongly recommend KJ's. We came into KJ's today for a late breakfast early lunch. We were immediately greeted and seated. We sat at the 2 person table just as you walk in the restaurant. As we were sitting down and looking at our menus, we saw an employee who looked like he was just a few days out of high school. He was wrapping flatware in a napkin. On a closer look, he is touching the top of the knife, fork and spoon with his fingers and there was definitely multiple touches to each piece before wrapping. Then he rubs his face with his hands. Now this is not your normal itch or discomfort. He starts rubbing his face like he just woke up and got out of bed. Then he yawns like an anime character. Full chin drop, head leans forward and without covering his mouth, he yawned for 5 seconds all over the open flatware tray. That was all I needed to see. I asked for a manager. I discretely pulled the manager aside and spoke with him privately. I didn't want anything from this manager but the reassurance that he'd properly train his employee with better flatware training and more general restaurant education. To my dismay, the manager speaks with this uneducated employee and alerts him to my complaint. So what does the kid do? He goes right back in the flatware pile and starts touching every piece of flatware by the tip of the fork, knife and spoon. Now it's almost intentional as I can tell. That was it for us, we asked for our check and we were out of there. If the manager doesn't take some very good health advice from a customer, then I guess it's time to find another place to dine. I tried to do the right thing, but KJ's management team felt differently about the whole thing. I wasn't aware KJ's was so great that they can ignore their customers and the health concerns for myself and for the good of others. Think long and hard before going to eat at KJ's. They need a bit more help at the GM and entry level positions. This GM lacked any interest at all in helping make this health concern go away. It seems like he encouraged it. So sad! Last but not least, the crispy hash browns we ordered were freezer burnt. They do not use fresh potatoes for their hash browns. They tasted horrible! read more

Even the salad bar quality has gone down and you would think with Sizzler closing they would boost the salad bar.. Add in impatient rude service, raw foods, & just overall lack of feeling welcomed anymore be a bit before we go back.. & I would not recommend if you have small children to come after how we were treated tonight! read more

Great place to eat. My wife and I had the Turkey dinner for Christmas Eve. After a nice dinner salad, the entre was composed of a literally HEAPING plate of cut/sliced turkey, dressing and mashed potatoes smothered in rich brown turkey gravy. Big cup of cranberry sauce on the side (I ordered extra cranberry - yum). I barely finished my plate, and my wife took about 1/3 of hers home in a take-out box. My only problem was that I had no room for their excellent dessert pies. Service was very good. Late 70's dark interior. Big screen TV's everywhere. Lots of tables and booths. Years ago I came to this restaurant when it was JBs and I LOVED the breakfast menu. I always got the stuffed French toast. Seriously so good. I was sad to see that now KJs doesn't have an all day breakfast menu, but they do still have the French toast during breakfast hours. I got the sourdough burger and it was pretty good! The sourdough did become a little bit soggy, but otherwise the flavors were great and it was filling. We had a large group that came in waves and they were very accommodating. Though the interior looks mostly the same as when it was JBs, they have made some small changes to update it and I love it! read more

Came in this evening to eat with a group of 10. The staff were very accommodating as different groups arrived at different times. They quickly took drink orders and were great about getting the orders right and brought out in a timely manner. At the end of the meal they were able to break out the meals by group too. My family got a Sourdough burger, my son got the corn dog meal, and I got the A1 bacon burger. The burgers were well done and the fries were plentiful. Been wanting to try KJ's since moving here 2-1/2 years ago. It's located near a busy intersection near the freeway and it's difficult to get to if you're not headed in the right direction. Being part of the 'older' crowd (boomer, okay), I miss Marie Callendar's, Coco's, Hof's Hut and those coffee shop type eateries. KJ's fits the bill. Took mom for breakfast - she gets her standard 2 eggs, hash browns & bacon; me eggs benedict or an omelet. Were greeted and seated right away, orders were taken just as quick and orders came out fast, too. They have a lot of staff - something you don't see much since covid-time. We arrived just as the breakfast buffet was being replaced with the lunch buffet of soups, chili and taco fixings. Their salad bar looks pretty good. The place has lots of booths, it's clean, comfy and welcoming. It's definitely a builder & boomer generations place. Looking forward to trying lunch and making it a regular stop. read more

We finally made it to this diner! It looks really nice and updated inside. They have a great variety in their menu, and my kids were happy to see Kraft mac & cheese on the kids menu! Drinks aren't included for the kids FYI. I noticed they have a salad bar (which will reopen when the COVID restrictions are gone). We all enjoyed our dinners, and the service was excellent. We have eaten here at least 6 times a year and this was too bad not to review. It's been a while since we've been here so I should have looked it over. The lettuce bowl was brown and extremely wet. Banana nasty see photo, chips for nachos stale cheese barely warm. Went for an ice cream to get filled up and it's all removed and says out of order temporarily. I am going to give this place a thumbs up and a 4 star rating...This is a classic diner type restaurant with diner type selections. Inside very clean and while not super modern still makes you feel very comfortable. We got seated right away and once sat our waitress immediately came over to greet us and take our drink order. After a quick glance at the menu I knew what I wanted. I had the classic club sandwich with avocado and while this is a pretty easy sandwich it amazes me how many people can mess it up. Bread was perfectly toasted and what made this special was the fresh cooked smoked bacon and fresh turkey. It really was a perfectly executed sandwich. I also had the onion rings as my side and while they had great flavor they were a little soggy. My wife had the classic cheeseburger with fries and commented how fresh and good hers tasted as well...overall great experience and look forward to coming back. read more

The pasta and potato salad were so-so. We also had a BBQ bacon burger with fries. Fries were mediocre and lukewarm even straight from the kitchen. We also had the sourdough burger which was probably the best on our table. The service was mediocre as well. No refills on drinks the entire visit. The greeter at the door was very indifferent. On Friday nights they currently serve prime rib! I had the tastiest end cut of prime rib that I have ever had anywhere. Nice crust on the outside, juicy and flavorful on the inside. It comes with two sides of your choice for just $21.99 which is a bargain for a generous serving. And of course, the service was top notch as always and the place was spotless.
