My sister threw out some restaurants for us May birthday girls to celebrate at. il Sugo has been on my to go list for a hot minute so I said yes immediately when she the out this joint as a suggestion. A reservation was made and we made our way in Saturday to celebrate. My husband and I were late arriving cause of work. But my family and friends got drinks and apps started. I wasn't expecting them to wait but I'm happy that they did! The drinks and apps kept them at bay till we arrived. The venue is stunning! I love the decor here. I have always been intrigued with European vintage decor and this restaurant is beautifully devoted decorated with this kind of esthetic. Such a romantic setting. The rich deep red wall. The ornate vintage frames. The plants. It's truly a beautiful set up. After my husband and I got settled in and drinks ordered, we got dinner placed. I got 2 orders of meatballs and my husband got the seafood pasta. While food was being worked on, everyone shared the bread and balsamic olive oil dip that was on the table. I heard the bread was good. I didn't get a chance to try it since it was communal. Our meals were slowly trickling out. My meatballs looked amazing! My husband's plate looked fabulous. You can see the shrimp, mussels, clams.... We all became quiet and started on our meals. My meatballs were huge! I have had meatballs at other restaurants and have been hungry still. The size of these babies let me know I was not going to have that issue. It was nicely covered in marinara. A hearty covering of parmesan. Everything about the meatballs were great! I have severe fomo so of course I had to try my husband's plate. I tried a couple of his penne. I was really thrown back at the heat of the sauce. I tried another bite and it was still spicy. The spice was something neither one of us were expecting. Before I say anything to our server, I did look over the menu to see if we missed anything in the description of the dish. No chili was listed. Nothing about it being garnished with chili flakes. From reading the menu, no spice was described in the dish. My husband has a real sensitive pallet so I asked the manager/owner why spice wasn't indicted in the menu. We wouldn't have ordered it if there was. The manager said they can remove the sauce and add new sauce that didn't have chili flakes in it. "It would make it less spicy." I was actually surprised he didn't suggest a new dish that didn't have heat in it. We were complaining about the heat and I honestly don't think replacing sauce that has spice in it with new sauce with spice will do anything.... but hey, we went with it. The second dish was made and dropped off. Unfortunately, the sauce was still spicy and my husband could barely eat it. He ate the seafood which was a few pieces of shrimp, clams, bay scallops, mussels and fish. This dish was drowned in this sauce so there was no way to eat the seafood with the sauce. This dish is 34 bucks and my husband could barely finish the seafood. Our server was kind and got me birthday dessert. The chocolate cake was killer good! It wasn't overly sweet. The frosting was rich in chocolate and the cake was super moist. I only took a couple bites and took the rest home. I was not going to leave this bad boy behind. We spent a little over 70 dollars on dinner to have my husband leave hungry. I came home and made him a second dinner. Nothing more disappointing than spending that much money just to come home and eat again. Money is tight for everyone so the fact that we chose to come here and spend our heard earned money to have my husband hungry just makes my heart sad. Overall, my meatballs and cake were good. Service was great. The venue is very pretty. But, having my husband eat a meal that was poorly described in the menu is just disappointing and having him leave husband is upsetting. I'm happy I got to try it out but I don't think we will be hitting up this joint again any time soon. read more

My wife and I really wanted to love Il Sugo, but I guess it just wasn't meant to be. We arrived around 5:45 on a Thursday evening. There was only one other occupied table, so we were seated immediately. With three servers on the floor and very few guests, we expected attentive service. The hostess brought us the dinner menu, specials, and the wine list. It was more than five minutes before our server came over to fill our water glasses. I was ready to order a bottle of wine, but as soon as the glasses were filled, she walked away. When she returned, she asked if we were ready to order. I told her I'd like to start with a bottle of wine. She wasn't sure whether the one I selected was available, so she left to check. When she came back, she told us it was sold out. Since most of the wine list is Italian and we aren't very familiar with Italian wines, I was hoping she'd recommend something similar. Instead, she simply asked if I'd like something else. Without any guidance, we gave up and stuck with water. We ordered our entrees, but were never asked if we'd like appetizers or salads. Another server brought out our food, and we honestly weren't sure what had happened to our original server. She eventually checked on us when we were about two-thirds of the way through the meal. The food itself was good. We skipped dessert and called it a night. Maybe my expectations are too high, but when a restaurant offers an extensive wine list, I expect the staff to know it well enough to make recommendations when something is unavailable. I also expect attentive service and at least a modest effort to enhance the dining experience through suggestions or upselling. Unfortunately, this was our second disappointing experience, with the visits about eight months apart. We had hoped the first one was just an off night, but after two similar experiences, we're left wondering whether we'll give Il Sugo a third chance. read more

They were limited staffing wise but our server was very kind and still tried his best to juggle multiple large parties at a time. We were a party of 5. When we got there, we were seated at a table for 4. We noticed that there was 2 tables that could have been put together to make a longer table. We requested to be moved there and were advised that the tables were reserved for a party coming in shortly. We continued to sit at the table for 4 and put a chair at the end. It was very crowded. As the night progressed, we noticed that no one sat at either table that could have been put together. It was extremely disappointing that we were so dismissed, no one ever came in for those "reserved" tables. The food was mediocre and we did not enjoy our experience. Took my niece here for her birthday because she wanted shrimp scampi. Reservation was for 7 on a Tuesday. We like a slow paced meal and it was obvious the server was rushing us from the jump. He did give us a very speedy tour of the menu and offered suggestions. They do have a Hugo spritz on the menu which was a pleasant surprise. They were out of the La Scala salad which I was just informed when I went to order it. I had the mixed green salad- it was just ok. I don't love a salad with raw broccoli but that's my bad for not looking at the description fully before ordering. We had the shrimp scampi and filet pasta entrees. Both were delicious. A note that the portion was easily finished so it was not a crazy large portion. I went to order to go entrees for our men at home and was told the kitchen was closed. It was 7:57. I strongly feel if they are going to want to be packed up and ready to bounce by 8 pm, the last reservation time that should be taken is 6:30 to give people 90 minutes to have a relaxing meal. I'm not a huge fan of tomatoes, but I could eat these tomatoes every day, they were that good! For entrees, I had heard great things about the spicy arriabiata, so I ordered that with the meatballs. Holy cannoli it was delectable! My husband got the deconstructed lasagna and it was heavenly. We cannot wait to go back and try more food! Service: 5/5. Our waitress was fantastic! This is the best Italian food in the entire state of Idaho and I will die on that hill. This rivals Italian restaurants in other big market cities and states easily. The food is fresh, bold, and incredibly satisfying beyond belief. The bruschetta appetizer is outstanding. The salmon was cooked to perfection better than any other restaurant I have visited including restaurants in coastal areas such as Washington, Maryland, Oregon, and California. The pesto pilaf it comes with is so flavorful and provides excellent texture and flavor contrast to the salmon. The Northender veggie with Linguine is a creamy, beautifully made pesto vegetarian dish that needs absolutely no adjustment. Full of flavor and not lacking in any format. No meat; no problem. I highly recommend this restaurant and I highly recommend the dishes that I have provided pictures of. The chef and family recipes are excellent, borderline perfection. read more

Ok.Where do I begin? Sat down on a weekday evening. Only 4 tables were filled with customers. Sat down immediately. TWENTY minutes after being seated our server finally came to the table to take our order. There were four of us and we were given ONE basket of dry bread to share. They gave us one tiny square plate with oil and balsamic vinegar on it. Kinda unsanitary to have people sharing this not to mention there certainly was not enough for four people. Had to ask for another plate of it. Most Italian restaurants let you make your own with the bottles of olive oil and the balsamic vinegar on the table. Had to ask for butter. The host brought one....again, 4 people. Had to ask for another butter. 25 min later our food came out. My food was lukewarm and had to be remade. When my new plate came out I think I had about 6 raviolis swimming in the saltiest red sauce I have ever tasted. Not Italian!! I had to scrape it off to eat my raviolis. I swear, I'm not a fan of Olive Garden by any stretch but their food would put this place to shame. My wife ordered a Ceasar salad with fried Chicken. It came with a mix of fried and grilled chicken. The chicken had an awful odd taste to it. My wife had to remove the chicken off the salad as it was inedible. Server never asked if I needed a refill of my drink. She did have plenty of time to sit at the table next to us chatting away where the wine was flowing freely and I suppose a better tip? Had to ask for Parmesan cheese and again, we were brought a little plate for four people. Tables were sticky and smelly. When we went to move the glasses on the table and they were stuck to it. You could hear them unstick as they were moved. I assume it was from the grime and probably sitting on the table forever. We will NEVER eat at this place again. How they can call this Italian food is beyond me. I wouldn't eat here again if it were free. What a waste of $60.00. Thank Goodness our company made the evening because it certainly wasn't the food nor environment. We got lousy food, lousy service and had to sadly pay for it. I live really close to this place and I would always look at the menu, but never order. I finally decided to place a pick up order 30 minutes before closing. Genuinely the best pasta I've had in Idaho. The service was quick. I got the sausage mushroom Alfredo and it was so creamy, rich, and delicious. The waitresses here are so friendly. I came in an hour before closing and decided to stop by after reading the reviews. As I travel solo for work often, I find myself eating out quite a bit. The restaurant was about half full on a Thursday night. The restaurant is well decorated and is easy to find. Service was prompt, attentive, and never had me waiting too long. Casual non-lyrical background music was playing that was not too loud to be overbearing to conversation. I had the filet mignon pasta, and that is the reason for the 4/5 stars. Although I love pasta and the fettuccine and steak was individually cooked well, the whole thing was extremely bland and under seasoned. The cream sauce tasted like nothing, and I had to add copious amounts of pepper to have any flavor. The menu is well sized and they have lots of other pasta options, which is what it seems they specialize in. If I'm in Boise again, I would love to try another pasta dish. read more

I was truly excited to go to this place so I made reservations for Valentines Day. I should've known something was off when they called me twice and sent two texts to make sure I was going to be there. So my wife and I get to the restaurant and we sit down to a fixed menu at a $60 per person minimum (you think they might have mentioned that when I made the reservation or the multiple calls and texts). The food was meh and was way overpriced for what we got (the risotto was undercooked). The service was almost comical as the waitress seemed more interested in sitting and chatting with people than actually serving the food. At the end we received a gift certificate for $20 for Valentines that I thought was an apology, but in hindsight, was probably a way to try and entice people to come back to this "Italian" restaurant. This is a gem! It feels the way a good Italian place should from the moment you walk in. We started with side salads, and they were ginormous with just enough dressing for flavor. Bread also good, but I needed more balsamic (just a preference). I went for the chicken carbonara and it wasn't "traditional" but it was AMAZING. We ordered buttered noodles here one night when we were at the brewery next door. When I walked in to pick up the noodles, the smell was intoxicating. I was very happy when finally got a chance to try the restaurant a few weeks later. My daughter had the buttered noodles, my wife had the Tartufo pasta, and I had beef ravioli. Although this was a carb overload, the food was amazing. The service was also great. The one thing that is missing is a partnership with Loose Screw. The beer list at Il Sugo was lacking, but it would be cool if you could somehow get a beer from Loose Screw to enjoy with your meal. read more
