I would give the rusty compass 1000 stars if I could. I visited Haines 2 years ago and have thought of my iced vanilla chai every single day since then. I have considered flying back to Haines just to get this chai again. I have told everyone I know to go to the rusty compass and get an iced vanilla chai. Truly yearning for this chai everyday for the last 2 years I cannot recommend this coffee shop enough anything you order here will be amazing. read more

Worth stopping by! Nice coffee shop with friendly service on Main Street across from the First National Bank. In addition to coffee, espresso and sodas, they also have ice cream, burritos and other pastries. It was delightful to find such a place on a hot afternoon off the cruise ship. read more

Mid-May 2021: My hotel, which was lovely, didn't have breakfast, so we walked to Rusty Compass every day. I really enjoyed feeling immersed in Haines life and this was part of it. Most customers were locals who knew employees or other patrons. It's a small-ish place, so you can take in everything that's going on. We enjoyed their espresso drinks immensely and service was very friendly. The breakfast food menu isn't extensive, but we found the food hit the spot for adventuring in Haines. read more

Really delicious coffee! Love that they have dairy free alternatives and everything tasted great. I did ask for an iced drink and it came out hot, which is not my preference, but it is what it is. I didn't ask to change it because of the amount of time it took to even get the drink. Be aware, if a lot of people are in town from a cruise, which we were, this place is BUSY! read more

A great little coffee shop. Good coffee and fantastic pastries! I shared a gigantic cinnamon roll with my family that was delicious. They also have free wi-fi with your purchase. Seating is more than adequate for a town of 2,000 people, but when another 1,400 tourists come to town off a cruise ship it gets cramped. read more

Very small cozy coffeehouse. Limited seating inside but there are a few tables and chairs outside too. Baristas are very friendly and know their coffee drinks! The baked goodies are excellent, freshly made and hard to resist. We didn't try, and had several scones before we left. There are also freshly baked muffins, cinnamon buns (huge) and cookies. We noticed other customers enjoying soup and/or sandwiches that looked good too. If you arrive by cruise ship this is the place to visit. I went here 3 out of the 4 days I was in Haines (the other day, I tried the other coffeeshop/deli in town, and was sadly disappointed in the bitter coffee there, so quickly returned here!) The coffee is very good - they have a regular and dark roast, both very smooth, not at all bitter. They also have a small selection of breakfast/lunch items and pastries - the breakfast items are served all day, which is awesome. And the pastries are homemade and delicious. It's also a pleasant spot to do work/use wifi - mix of locals and tourists, and the staff is friendly to everyone. read more

Not the first place I would choose to come for a relaxing cup of coffee. But a good grab and go cafe for anyone There are some great artistic gifts inside and it's no doubt a good place to grab a cup, maybe a sandwich or ice cream, take a look around and go. But it's not big enough or quiet enough to stick around and chill. The staff was super nice and welcoming and at least when I came in they had a nice little playlist going. read more

Established in 2011.

The Rusty Compass first opened its doors in 2011 as a seasonal operation, but in 2017 there was a change ownership. The new owners have expanded the coffee beverage, breakfast and lunch menus, and have increased the space for seating inside, almost doubling the capacity.

Lee and Darcy moved to Haines in 2017 to pursue the Alaska lifestyle and to serve the people of Haines and passers-through with great coffee and great food. Lee has a background in teaching, guiding, and photography, and is thrilled to hear the stories of all those traveling through this little corner of Alaska.

Maybe it's because I just spent a few days on a cruise ship and I was finally back on land. Either way, it's exactly what I wanted that morning. The bakery also serves a fun lineup of coffee drinks. If I remember correctly, I read their syrups are homemade, although don't quote me on that. I was a little distracted by the cinnamon roll the size of a plate sitting in front of me. The shop itself is exactly what you'd hope to find in Skagway. Small, cozy, and full of local charm.
