This location has gone way down hill. Ordered the chicken stripe with fries and n d coleslaw on a Friday evening dinner time. Chicken strips and fries where soggy. Fries where full of grease.....gross. The coleslaw had no flavor and the cup they used had a tiny servings of coleslaw. It didn't even fill the tiny cup half way. Im a regular but they lost me on this one. I will call and vent to the local Matthews manager or regional manager. read more

First and foremost, I want to preface by saying I believe in second chances and redemption, not trickery and bribes. Typically, when someone from a restaurant reaches out to me about my review, especially when they are not 5 star, I instantly become skeptical. However, this owner made me feel comfortable to share my thoughts and explain how my visit went before anything else. Over the years, I have received tons of owners offering me a free meal in exchange for my integrity but I could tell this owner was extremely genuine and wanted to make sure my voice was heard. The initial post will remain the same but I wanted to amend some of the initial remarks including the service. The first time I tried this place, I received service that was not in alignment to the core values and standards this restaurant upholds, which, I am human and I have worked in food service for years so trust me, I get it. Since being back twice since my initial visit, I have been treated like family. The service has been up to par and the staff has been incredibly friendly. As far as the ambiance, it gives the feel of an old diner which makes it charming and lovable. Perhaps, some restorations and furnishings can be done nothing that isn't manageable. Lastly, I wanted to make sure to do a thorough review of the menu so when I went back twice after my initial review, I tried a menu item for each the breakfast menu and the dinner menu. The food was great! It was favorable, warm and packed with fresh ingredients. I tried the ribs and Mac and cheese as well as a breakfast plate on two separate occasions without letting the restaurant know I was coming back for a remake. The only thing I wasn't super thrilled about was the Mac and Cheese, other than that it was good. Stumbled on this location when our hotel let us down on Breakfast. This place was Great. Service was great (we won't tell anyone she served us a bloody mary at 9:45 - without knowing it had to be 10am LOL). Food was very tasty as I had a Chicken on a biscuit with gravy on the side. I haven't been here in over a year and it's such a wonderful feeling to see that the food and service is still great. Also I'm happy to see that they've decided to try shrimp and grits without the grit cakes. The ambience is open and friendly, you're seated close enough to make a friend but far enough to not hear any personal conversations. This has and always will be one of my favorite little spots. They didnt have mimosa flights before so I definitely got one, the orange juice was my least favorite flavor but only because the OJ was way too tart/sour. The blueberry lemon pancake was delicious (chefs kiss) and the omelette was full of meat and veggies just how I like it. My favorite meal here is the chicken and waffles, it's so worth the price and your tummy will love you for life. My sis ordered it and demolished it before I could snap a pic. The food varies, depending upon what you order and when you come. What would the staple on the menu fried chicken and waffles with the strawberry butter, the strawberry but it was on point, but the chicken was definitely made and sitting out it was dry. I ordered the meatloaf/gravy, mashed potatoes and green beans plate. The meatloaf was burnt and the gravy tasted "old". The best of the plate was the few green beans. I complained to our waiter and he was very polite and went and told the kitchen. Another slice was offered but I turned it down, for obvious reasons. The waiter agreed that the slice of meatloaf was charred. I expected management to come by, but nope not a soul. I ate two bites and had to quit. My wife's chicken and waffles was good. Sadly Metro has become very inconsistent. Don't get me wrong, I love their breakfasts which are available ALL DAY! Saturday @ 4 P the place was very slow when I ordered my usual eggs, sausage, HB, biscuit & gravy. All was good except The Biscuit which was a leftover morning creation that was now ROCK HARD and pretty much inedible. Metro, if you aren't making fresh biscuits ALL DAY - don't offer a substandard dish in the afternoon. Cute little dinner! Stopped here on a whim while traveling through town. We specifically wanted brunch which is why we stopped here. There were tons of adult breakfast drinks from bloody Mary's to mimosas and flavored coffees. Our waitress was really nice and told us all about daily specials. Was in the town of Matthews, NC yesterday, and was looking for a place to eat. "Stumbled" upon Metro Diner. Upon entering we were greeted by a young lady with a beautiful smile, and promptly seated! Our server was Manny F., he was very attentive, and also served with a smile!! We ordered breakfast, coffee and water. Our breakfast arrived amazingly fast, portions were generous and everything was as we ordered! If I HAD to complain about something, it would be the coffee wasn't as hot as we would've expected it to be, but that's a minor detail Metro Diner has a nice family ambiance to it! I have done a review before and the restaurant is still great and the food is still good. But... We went for dinner and while we were there we, and everyone else, couldn't help but notice that one of the "managers" was very rude to their workers. The verbally kept assaulting the workers over and over. The food is good but this lady needs to take a class on how to talk to people and treat people. If you are looking for a quick place to grab a delicious breakfast, Metro is your go to. We got there right when they open, were seated right away and immediately greeted by our waiter. We split the cinnamon roll pancakes and hickory smoked bacon. The cinnamon roll pancakes are such a treat! They are fluffy, flavorful and delightful especially if you have a sweet tooth. Metro Diner never ever fails me, whether I order or dine in. Most recently, myself and eight others stopped by to grab some brunch. The ambiance here is that of a diner; kinda homey, casual and just very southern. It was about a 30m wait before we were seated and then served by a wonderful, friendly waitress. The orders ranged from burgers to chicken and waffles to an old fashioned breakfast of eggs, ham...you know the rest. Damn near every plate was wiped clean. Some folks ordered an extra meal to go. Others, like myself, couldn't finish their food and took it home too. I had one of their specials that day -- a Belgian waffle with strawberries, strawberry butter, some sort of sugar crumble and, of course, their famous fried chicken. It was so freaking good. Found this place by accident as the place we intended on going to looked "interesting" so we left. We happened upon this place and we were so glad we did. We arrived around 11 and had to wait around 20 minutes which was fine as it was Sunday and that's not uncommon. After being seated we were greeted by our sever Dino who was super pleasant. I ordered the pretty in pink mimosa with the chicken and waffles while my husband got the meatloaves omelette with hash browns and the homemade biscuit. Everything arrived rather quickly and piping hot. My drink tasted delicious and my food was phenomenal but the portions were huge so I gave my husband half of everything so no complaints on our parts at all. Our sever was there at every minute and our drinks never went dry, super helpful and as mentioned very personable. First time or first time back in a while for me and I usually have been ordering my meals from Postmates and did with this one. I ordered a lot of items that I found sounding yummy: chicken and waffles, silver dollar pancakes, home fries, grits, biscuits, more waffles, scrambled eggs with cheese and I don't know a few more items. All were good and even with them arriving a little cold they were all still very good. My roommate and I ate a lot! They also packed well and we had a brown bag dedicated to maple syrup (Plenty given!!! a big Plus!), butter packets, jelly (Grape YUCK, but plenty), ketchup and utensils. All in all a very good meal, plenty to eat, well packaged delivery. I would recommend this place using Postmates and I am sure if you went into restaurant food would be on next level from delivery and I will give that a try when I see one. The food was also not the greatest. My brother-in-law's food was missing things and it took forever to get the servers attention. Decided to have a family brunch date at this location. My friends BF got there around 1:15pm. and put us on the waitlist so that by the time we got there at 2 p.m., we were seated. We were seated, but they ended up putting us in two separate booths, which basically split our party in half. When we asked if we could get a table, there was a lot of back and forth, and finally, the manager stated she could move us. Unfortunately, throughout the whole time we were there, the manager did have a bad towards us and looked annoyed, I guess, because we made such a fuss about getting a table. The waitress, though, was awesome and was super nice and sweet. The food was OK. Was not the best. A lot of our orders were mixed up and missing things but not such a big deal. It was my first time at this location with family. We had a 15 minute wait and got a nice bigger booth in the back. It was pretty busy and our server got out drink order in but it took a while to come back to get our food order, like 15-20 minutes. I had been to a different location, but this was my first time as being lactose intolerant. And that limited the menu a lot. I got a chicken salad sandwich on a croissant and a side of green beans. The chicken salad was basic. The croissant was cooked too long and was like a brick to to eat. It was not good. Green beans were decent. Once again it took a while to get our bill when we were done. My past Metro Diner visits, at the location and the Matthews location, has always been for brunch. This visit was for dinner and I am glad we chose diner food for dinner! I decided to go with the Turkey Dinner and I can say it sure hit the spot! Shaved Turkey Breast, Mashed Potatoes with Gravy, Stuffing, Greens Beans and Cranberry Sauce. The entire dish was great and one I would definitely order again. The turkey was perfectly cooked and included 5 or 6 slices, a huge portion. The cranberry sauce was just the right touch, with tart and sweet and paired perfected with the turkey and gravy. The green beans were also cooked just right, a perfect bite. And, we all know when you overcook green beans they are just mush, not here. Overall, I have enjoyed my visits to Metro Diner, but may make more dinner visits to enjoy this dish, and try others again. read more

This was our first time at the Matthew location of Metro Diner. I called ahead to check the wait time and was told there was no wait. When we arrived there was a 20 minute wait for our party. This place gets busy fast. I got the famous Chicken and Waffles and a side of Cheesy grits. Their chicken and waffles hands down are some of the best in the city. The grits weren't the best but normally I'm a fan of their grits. I was able to share this dish with my father. The portion on this dish is huge. My family got the western omelette.
