I called Knox Roofing repeatedly to find out if they were going to complete a job they started n Nov. 2014. The job was to replace the 2nd of 2 shingles that had fallen off. I was charged $290 for one worker who replaced one shingle that I supplied. I did not receive any refund for the work not done. Warren Knox, the owner, came to "repair my roof". He would not listen to me regarding the shingle problem. He offered a refund yet never provided that refund, and he was belligerent throughout the meeting. Warren Knox wrote a letter to me accusing me, a woman in my eighties, of basically intimidating him. The negative comments of other reviewers are also my experience. Seek out another roofing company, because Knox is not an honorable business man...and he is afraid of senior citizens. read more

We hired these guys and the roof they built leaked the VERY FIRST TIME IT RAINED... and continued to do so until we hired someone else to fix their horrendous job. We asked them to come out and fix their work but they VOIDED THEIR WARRANTY without cause.........we should of taken them to court......an attorney said we could of easily won but it simply wasn't worth the hassle. I now have a friend who is an inspector for the county and he says (off the record) that my experience with them is not uncommon. He says their work is so bad that he fails most of the jobs that they do. I wish I had known this before I wasted a large amount of money with knox roofing.. I love k-pig but every-time I hear one of knox's ad's I want to puke (but my love of the pig is so great that I never change the station), Luckily the next guy was far more honest and did a good job AND he was cheaper. read more

It's never a good thing when a roofing company has to keep coming back to fix the stuff they didn't get right in the first place. That's how it is with Knox. But I kept hiring them because they did come back...until they didn't. Over the years I've used them for multiple partial-roof jobs, some small repairs, and one total roof. On the last job they did for me there were some contract problems, which they did not address in full. They missed some underlying damage, too. Yeah, they fixed some stuff. We had a 20 year flat roof surface installed this summer. The bid turned out to be $6000 less than charged. Never the same people day to day. 4-5 days turned into 6 weeks and then when we water tested it water poured into several places. Workers were really pleasant, but management was invisible and concerns went to a different person each time, no continuity. Phone staff, were great, but the bottom line, I had to have them out multiple times to fix things done wrong, roof leaked, skylights installed wrong 4 times before they called in the person they should have started with and he fixed them. Many things broken in the house as they pounded with sledge hammers very hard to remove roof and did not warn us to remove all glass items, things fell off the wall, glass all over. It was honestly an awful experience and we have little confidence that the roof will not leak. I believe their name is well known and they bank on that. Workers took many many LONG breaks, job took forever to finish. We had 5 flat tires, they never used a magnet to clear our driveway..I would not recommend at all. read more

I have used Knox Roofing one time. It was a while back. I am calling them out for a re-roof on my house. I do a lot of roofs, because I am a property manager, but, luckily, I haven't had to do any since 2011, when I used Knox to roof a small but very difficult commercial building. I am writing this review now because I believe the proof of a great roofer is not what it looks like a week after the install, but what it looks and works like four or five years down the road. The roof Knox put on for me, and I think they did the gutters too, looks as new as the day they finished the job. Knox is at the top of my call list, and I will use them again. As a business owner myself, I can tell there is an angry ex-employee or crazy competitor getting their friends to write bad reviews to try to harm this business. I know quite a few slime bag roofers in the area that wouldn't hesitate. You can always tell when Yelp is being abused by some crazy or someone bent on revenge, there are no reviews between 1 star and 5 stars. If I am not mistaken, all of the other reviews are 5-star, and that tells you something. The building Knox roofed for me was a real bear, a combination of membrane and conventional composite shingles, with HVAC and mechanical in one five-foot deep flat-roofed well, plus another larger two-foot high flat-roofed well with an entry hatch, drains, gutters, etc. Knox was on the ball and professional from day one to the finish. The price was competitive and the materials were exactly the high-quality I specified. They even noticed one of the membrane liners had been made wrong by the fabricator and they sent it back. They could have just put it on and I would never have known. They demonstrated some real ethics. I trust Knox based on my experience. I think Knox is being too kind in their responses to the one-star fakers. They should just tell the fakers to call the office. If the fakers are a real customer, I am sure Knox will work it out. Knox is the most professional and legitimate roofer I have ever worked with. Just go by their showroom and see for yourself. read more

We have now had Knox Roofing do a roof repair, a partial re-roof, and install a water barrier for our tiled patio. The do excellent work, communicate well, arrive on time and keep the work area clean. I really question the negative reviews, since our experience has been the complete opposite. They were not the cheapest estimate, or the most expensive, but they fixed our leaking patio which the original contractor could not, and did it quickly and efficiently. Hi - I have only 3 words. NO NO NO ... We used Knox to help us to stop a leakage in the roof. They came to give us an estimate. Advised us that it would take an hour to fix the problem. Then the roofer came and finished the work in about 20 mins. The problem did not get fixed. When i called them, all they said was - well we can come again but will charge u again..We don't guarantee that we ill fix the problem. They were rude and difficult to deal with. There are better companies you could use. Dont waste your time and money with them. read more

This review comes a good 3 or 4 years after Knox Roofing put a new roof on our Soquel home (adding a couple of skylights in the process, which are great). To get 5-stars, clearly there haven't been any leaks, but my story is better than that. We have house with high, open-beamed ceilings. Looking up you see the beams and some faux tongue and groove plywood -- but above that it was tar paper, cedar shake, and sky! As is common in Santa Cruz, there was absolutely no insulation. Needing a new roof, I thought that this might be a good opportunity to improve on the situation... I began calling roofers and they began visiting. To each I asked how we might get some insulation with our new roof. I spoke to seven or eight companies and, admittedly learned a little each time. By the time Warren Knox showed up I was close to knowing what we wanted -- but he improved the design a little more and, instead of making me feel like I was going a little overboard, Warren's attitude was, "we can do that"! And they did. Not the cheapest (but right in there), not the fastest (better good than fast) but, they hung in there and found a way to get it done. The results are fantastic. Our insulated roof makes our home MUCH more comfortable and the raised soffits -- that we worried would look too thick -- make our house look much more substantial and nicer. New roof, new skylights, 12" of rigid insulation, and the way Knox got it done shows the depth they have in their company. Highly recommended. read more

We're very pleased with the result. The only problem we've had in 1.5 years was a small leak in one of the gutter corners their sub-contractor installed. This was fixed promptly. Mr. Knox came out and inspected our roof and quickly gave us a competitive estimate. We opted for the thirty year composition shingles. When I had a leak, I called for a repair. I quickly learned that you can't resurrect a roof that is worn out and needs complete replacement, which revealed rotten wood. Made complete sense that had I opted for an attempt at repair, it was a gamble. I worked out a contract for replacement and had it done. It won't need to be done for another 35 years or so now and I won't have to pay anything more out. That's what I needed, and common sense dictated it. The arrival for an estimate appointment was prompt, and the worker was knew his stuff. I feel confident that I got what I needed, and when it was done everything was cleaned up. As far as these Yelp whiners, there is no miracle cure for terminal cancer...and that's what a rotten worn out roof is. read more

I am giving Knox Roofing 5 stars, and let me say things did NOT go as planned. This might sound crazy, but let me explain. One would think a roof is a roof; how hard can it be. But, there are some unknowns once the old one is torn off. I appreciated Knox and all of the employees because they wanted to do the job correctly, not just get it done and collect a check. We experienced some expected and unexpected challenges, but Knox kept to the contract and did everything they had promised. The only item that we were charged extra for was some plywood replacement that could not be seen until after the original roof was removed. The guys here showed us the rotten plywood they were recommending we replace while it was still on the roof. We were presented with a change order for the additional cost, and once we approved it, they did the work. Everyone who came to our house was wonderful, professional and they cleaned up each day. When we encountered some issues, Sean, our project manager, quickly replied and resolved them. When finding contractors, I always feel like it is important to find one that you can work with, not just when things are going according to plan, but one who will work with you when unexpected things occur, and that is where Knox Roofing was excellent. I would recommend them to all of my friends and would happily hire them again any time (but hopefully not for the next 15-20 years - the life expectancy of our new roof ;) ). read more

I called Knox Roofing in Scotts Valley, based on great reviews (other website). It had been raining and I noticed a leak from our skylight. Though busy, they came out first thing in the morning, covered the skylight, did some diagnostic to confirm the issue, and measured for a replacement. They called me promptly to schedule the follow-up visit to replace the skylight. The cost was reasonable. Overall great experience. read more

What a great company!! We had several roof companies come out to bid our roof. Everyone of them tried to discourage us from re using our cement tiles and getting new. They all said the work was to "labor intensive". Warren Knox came out and immediately told us it was no problem. He was quick in getting us a bid. They worked with our solar company in getting our stands installed. His crew was amazing. They found some minor damage during the process and fixed it for us. They even painted thw new wood to match our existing color so we wouldnt have too. They were fast, extremely efficient and very polite. I received absolutely horrible customer service from this roofing company! I booked the first appointment to get my roof fixed and received no word whatsoever as to whether they had assessed the roof damage or not. I had to call them back 3 days later with no apology and an excuse that their driver couldn't find the location and that it was "tricky" out there. As a new homeowner the previous owner had recommended I use this company because they had worked on the house prior to my purchase. So I decided to give them another chance and book a second appointment the following Friday. I gave them my cell phone # and told them if they had any issue finding the location again to call me. Once again no one called or followed up with me and the driver was a no show. I persisted to call again with no word or explanation still! Its a wonder this company is still in business!! Thank goodness I had a contractor look at the place and learned that the roof under the deck was leaking very badly and that the roof and the deck both needed to be replaced. Things started so nicely. Baffling how they could blow the job apart so quickly with rudeness and false statements. You have to trust your roof and you have to trust your roofer. Well, Warren Knox lost my trust. Warren came out and walked my roof with me to give me a bid. The next morning, I discovered a leak in a separate structure (a former garage that was converted into an office). I emailed Warren the following that day: "We will want a bid that includes the office that had the black asphalt coating. It has a troubling leak." That was the first of four emails and repeated phone communications with Knox Roofing about trying to get a bid for "The Office." Knox even sent out an very nice employee who waked the office roof with me and measured it. Weeks later, they finally sent me an adjusted bid, including a price for an "additional section." I actually called Knox Roofing to confirm that this "additional section" was "the office." Then, over a month later, I get an email telling me: "Do you still need a price for the neighboring building?" Then the employee sending me the email proceeds to tell me that it will be nearly $6K more for "the office." What follows are a series of emails and voicemails where, despite incontrovertible evidence, Warren continues to maintain that my office was a 5.5' x 23' exterior awning. Does he ever take responsibility for his actions? Nope. Does he ever say, "I made a mistake." Nope. Does he ever look back at my emails (which I re-sent) and say that he wants to work something out because he misled me? Not a chance. Are communications from Knox littered with various false statements? Yes. What Warren Knox does do is threaten me with "other actions" if the job is canceled. Needless to say, all that did was force my hand to actually cancel the job. What is so frustrating about this was Warren's continued inability to simply own up to his mistake (if it was, in fact, a mistake). I run a business. We budget and bid on projects all the time. While we don't do construction or roofing, we follow the maxim: measure twice, cut once. While this looked a lot like someone trying to jack up the price at the last minute, if it wasn't, it was incompetence. I had asked for one thing. I had asked for it in writing repeatedly. But rather than apologize and accept responsibility, Warren dug in and tried to bully me. Of course, maybe that's what works if you just want to jack up a price at the last minute. That's not the way I do business and I don't do business with folks who do. I hope Warren will read some books or attend some conferences on customer service. His roofing work may be excellent. His customer service is painfully lacking. read more

I had Knox roofing do my roof a few years back. They did a fast job and the work was OK and not bad considering the price, but I asked them to replace the plywood with what was originally on the roof which was 3/4". They put 1/2" in it's place and was not a part of the original agreement. I called and complained, but i was greeted by a screaming Mr. Knox. Had he given me a slight refund for the misunderstanding or not got into a yelling match with me, I would have given the company 4 stars. The workmanship was good, the prices were OK (Not great) but not to admit to their mistake had me have them loose a star. read more
