For context, I've lived in LA for 7 years now, and for the first 6, I could not find someone to do a relaxer to save my life. If you have long, natural/kinky/curly hair, save your money and please do not come here! I used to come here years ago before I was natural and decided to come back this January. Although Tanisha and her assistant are so kind (which is why I am giving 2 stars instead of none), I just do not think they know how to handle kinky/thick/long hair. The detangling process was extremely painful and anyone who knows curly hair knows to detangle while the hair is soaking wet w conditioner. They did not do this, and I told them my hair can not be detangled otherwise, which resulted in a very long and painful process. I was there for 6+ hours and spent over $300 and I left with heat damage and overall damage, which I am now paying the price of. I am so upset because I spent the past 6 years restoring my hair to health and finally decided to go to a salon for once, which has left me now cutting so much off. I got my hair done here yesterday and I left extremely pissed....first off I was quoted 90$ for a relaxer which is fine but walked out paying 130$!!! I was the first client at 9am and did not walk out the salon until 130!!!! there is no reason the service should have cost so much and been so slow! my hair turned out ok but not 130$...she trimmed my ends but there's no way a trim should be an extra 40$! First professional haircut I've had in years where I got exactly what I wanted. Tanisha and her team were great. Tanisha is very attentive and consultative. She listened to what I said I wanted and provided guidance on how to achieve those goals. She does not use a lot of heat- my hair is natural when wet- but yet my hair was smooth and shiny with lots of body when she was done. After coming to this salon twice, I have chosen not to return. Upon purchasing a Groupon for a facial, I was quite excited as the Yelp reviews were pretty positive. My first experience, a few months ago was mostly positive except for the forced upsale at the end of the service. However, I purchased an item, seemingly overpriced Aveda item, and booked a second appointment. My next experience was pleasant for the most part. I did not have the same aesthetician as before but I did enjoy my facial although it was not what I originally paid for via Groupon. When I stepped to the cashier, she totally calculated my bill incorrectly. I literally had to explain to her what I should be charged for. Unbeknownst to me, either she could not count or wanted to add extra money to my bill. Instead of arguing, I paid the ridiculous amount and undertipped the person who serviced me. Actually, the extra money should have been given to her (anyhow). Due to lack of UNprofessionalism at the front counter, I will never return to this salon. I should not have to feel like I need to purchase an item or get cheated during a visit. When booking at this salon, be clear about what you want and ask questions about pricing. Aveda stores push these salons to there customers that buy Aveda products. I buy Aveda products and they name dropped salons when I asked about checking out a stylist that use the product. I went to the Knox website. Theres all these different prices for Junior stylist, long hair etc. but Tanisha has her hands in everyones hair at the time I was there and is gonna charge you the rate for her hands in your hair. And theyre slow. I overheard another client complain while I was in the chair waiting, about how she didn't expect to be there so long while checking out. So no definitely not a competitor. I got the BEST facial of my life at Knox. It put all the other facials I've ever had to shame. Katie was incredible, she gave me some great advice and my adult acne is FINALLY clearing up after taking her advice. Katie was so awesome during extractions that I FELL ASLEEP! Who does that? I totally fell asleep during the most painful part of it. She did such a fantastic job that I can't imagine going anywhere else for a facial ever again. Went in for a hair appointment and I must say to stay away from the owner Taneisha. Her salon sells all Aveda hair and skin products. I asked about one of the Aveda hair products. I DID NOT ask to purchase it. She opened a full size product and let me sample the texture. She then proceeded to ask "Are you going to pay cash or credit?" I told her that I just asked about it and would do neither. She then pressed for any type of payment. That is when I knew that I did not want her touching my hair because of her slick and disturbing business tactic. She has been in business for many years and should know the difference between a question and someone asking to purchase. I went to Knox Salon for about 4 years before moving to Chicago last year. Tanisha is a great stylist. I was constantly changing my hair. She has relaxed it, chopped it all off, pressed and flat ironed it, and helped me grow it back after going natural. Tanisha is educated in hair care, and I'm surprised to see all of the complaints about pricing. Knox is a professional salon, and the prices are comparable to what a quality salons charge for services. I continued going to Knox because of the great service I received. Tanisha kept her appointments, was timely, didn't stop to eat lunch, talk on the phone, or gossip about other customers or workers. Knox is an Aveda salon. You will be offered products to use in between appointments, but she doesn't pressure you to buy anything. After doing a lot of research, I chose Knox Salon for a new haircut and a facial. I walked in and it was quiet, peaceful, and I immediately felt relaxed. I was greeted by friendly employees who offered me water. Marissa gave me the most amazing facial ever! I've never been so relaxed and refreshed in my life. She explained everything she was going to do before she started and afterwards she showed me every product she used. She was very helpful. Bethany did my hair. I ended up getting my hair washed, conditioned, trimmed and press for a total of $160. Within the hour of getting my hair done my hair reverted back to its natural state. I would recommend and women of color to not get their hair done at this salon because not only is it a rip off I was lied to about a hair trim. Asked hair problems nd what u like nd products smell great nd make ur hair feel amazing What I don't like: Its really pricey for each service. 20 for deep conditoning, 60 for a cut, then 55 and up for a press nd style, etc etc. And if you want a combination of items then it gets more and more $$$. Can a bitch get a combo platter shit! Now I don't mind spending a bit on my hair but I hate hate feeling like I'm being over charged. Now I will admit before coming here my hair was extremely damaged from weave over-use so its natural to get some (-) feedback from a stylist. But I felt when I came here she wasn't able to do much but cut up my hair. Which I guess is the right thing but as a stylist Im sure there are ways to work with damaged hair thats fortifying without chopping it all off. It comes off as negative and ineffective when it comes to customer retention. I dont really fux with negative people and when it comes to a service I'm over paying for, I better get POSTIVE feedback. I haaate having to give a low review to this salon because I really loved the salon ITSELF, but not the service I received. If I could review only the woman at the front desk I would give 5 stars! She was amazing, so welcoming, offered me water or tea and I declined... then she mentioned there was also wine! woot woot. So here I am sitting enjoying my wine, another woman kindly comes up and asks if I want a hand massage while I wait... Im thinking "wow this looks like a nice salon and I like it so far! maybe I should see if they can do my hair after my facial..." But then I went in for my facial. It was an hour facial... which was basically 20 minutes of facial, 30 minutes of an uncomfortable face massage (usually I love any kind of facial massage). Everytime products were put on my face, face wash, oil etc, they were pumped directly on my face... pouring into my hair. Finally I ask if there is one of those towel type headbands I usually (ALWAYS) get during facials?? She fumbled around for 5 minutes trying to wrap my hair in a towel... saying I have so much hair it was hard... finally Im like okay screw it my hair is ruined anyways for the day forget about it. One of the things pumped onto my face was oil?? I had a 30 minute oily face massage. I get that maybe its "face oil" but this is still gross. GREAT if I wanted a face massage Id pay for that, I wouldn't get a facial (when I am extremely broken out etc I would like to actually receive a FACIAL not an oily massage). The whole process was uncomfortable, unenjoyable, and I didn't see any positive results in my skin. Then leaving the super-amazing front desk woman was sweet again and had put together a bag with mostly marketing etc for the salon but some little samples as well. I was shocked when she told me I owed her over $500 for color, a simple trim and treatment. Outrageous! I popped into Knox Salon for an emergency eye brow wax (you know the day you decide you absolutely need one and try to fit one in between all of your errands). I was taking a cooking class next door and thought I'd give it a whirl. Now, there are different levels of eye brow waxing, from the quick rip to the more detailed wax. This was not a quick rip and you're out - after the wax the aesthetician put tanning goggles on my eyes, shined a big ol' light on my eyes and finished with some tweezing. Why has no one thought of doing this before? Brilliant. Also the room was very nice and relaxing with a faux waterfall in the room to soothe your nerves. Knox Aveda (delicious) Salon has an unpretentious exterior that belies the quiet, lovely little oasis within... Here is the story... (If you want the quick take, skip to the "BoTTom LiNe.") My sister and I were out running around doing errands over near Robertson and it was a pretty crazy day. We decided to treat ourselves to a last minute facial. We love Aveda products (Holy "Green Science," Batman!) and so sis googled the closest Aveda salon: KNOX SALON on Robertson. They fit us in, were really nice over the phone and we headed over. The best part, they have 30 minute facials which can easily be done over a lunch hour which, for me, is usually sandwiched between a crazy morning and an even more hectic afternoon... While my sister got her facial I had tea and was given a complementary hand massage...I'm not sure if they have more than one facial room so it's not the most convenient place to go for a girlfriend's afternoon facial trip but MARISSA is excellent. Actually she's a bit more than excellent. Not just because she does good work, listens to her clients and uses the allotted time well... She has a wonderful demeanor and really loves what she does... I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Knox Aveda and I can't wait to go again! The only other thing I might want improved is the temperature of the tea...I like mine hot! I've never written a review for anything ever (even though i read many of them). Today could not make it to my regular hair guy, so decided to try Know salon for a blowdry. I have curly hair, just wanted my regular old blow dry, kind of big waves.. It was the WORSE blow dry ever, got my bangs cut a bit.. and it was $95!!!! WHAT???!! Are you kidding? first of all, she used the dryer only to "dry" my hair, no styling. Then used the flat iron (which i never asked her to) to do the rest.. the bangs looked flat, with no waves, no motion.. So expensive and lengthy for very poor results. Not going back. read more

They use all Aveda products and my facial was close to 90 minutes. While I received a great deal on Groupon I was willing to go back and pay regular price however when I called they told me they are no longer doing facials. I was very disappointed with my experience at Knox Salon yesterday. I was very excited to see an Aveda salon in my area with spa services so I purchased a spa package to help relieve some recent stress. Although all the ladies who work there are absolutely wonderful some of the their skills, tools or products are really lacking. Unfortunately, i did not realize this until I got home. I knew there were gonna be problems when Tanesha my manicurist, couldn't clean up the all the polish on my fingers and cuticles. When she cleaned one side of the nail/cuticle then she took of nail polish from nail itself off too. After a few comments to request her to clean them up better, she told me she did not have her tools with her because she did not know she had a client yesterday. I thought that is not an excuse and sounded very unprofessional for them not to always have some tools there. If I'm paying full price for the service I should be getting it done right. But, at that point all I could do is grin and bear it because I knew she was really trying. When I got home I had to clean the excessive polish on my cuticles off myself which just frustrated me more because it took her forever to do them in the first place. Just felt like I wasted so much time. I also had a facial by Rebbecca, which I noticed was nothing like I usually get. Usually there is a little discomfort during extractions but with her not only did I feel no discomfort she was not even attempting extracting around my nose or chin. Which is usually every ones problem area, its definitely mine. When I asked her to make sure she gets my nose because she had not touched it, nor my cheeks, or chin. She said their wasn't anything ready to extract. Really?? Seriously?? There is always congestion and junk that comes out around my nose and chin so I knew that wasn't true. She also informed me she doesn't use the extractor tool and uses her fingers instead . I am not against new methods being used but I am against ineffectiveness. When I got home I could see all the black & whiteheads around and on my nose, cheeks, and chin that she said were not there...even with a normal mirror. I'm not sure if its a lack of using a magnifying mirror or because shes using her fingers but they definitely need to invest in an extractor or magnifying mirror for facials if they don't have one already. Since my eyes were covered the whole time, I couldn't see how it was done. So now I have an appointment with my usual esthetician end of this week to get it done right. Anyway, the last service I had done was my eyebrows. But, I did not see what they really looked like til I got home due to the dim room they were done in. When I got home my roommate welcomed me with a..."what happened? You didn't get your spa day?" . She couldn't even tell I got my eyebrows done because there was so much hair there still. The hairs were so many and long that I had to get them redone somewhere else. I don't know if its the wax they use or what. But I feel Rebbecca, the esthetician, should have plucked the rest of them or something, she could surely see them...they looked a hot mess still. She shouldn't have not let me leave like that. To finish things off, the owner had me rung up when I wasn't even at the register yet and took the liberty for putting my services together with product I bought when I wanted to pay separately. So when I was attempting to pay I realized the total was too much. After a little bit of going back and forth the owner realized she had overcharged me for services. And instead of canceling or voiding the transaction out she wanted me to figure out the differences so I could add the tip in. I thought that this was very unprofessional and somewhat sketchy. I mean it made it look like the my services cost more than they did and like I tipped less than I did. As I said the girls are great people but some improvements definitely need to made.
