The location is also great: it feels tucked away and peaceful, yet it's just minutes from town and right across the street from an amazing Mexican restaurant. Highly recommend this hidden gem. Compared to sylvan Lake Campground, this one lacked a little bit of privacy, but still a well…read moremaintained campground. We stayed in the site 25 which is technically a tent only/walk in site, but your car is parked right at the edge of your campsite so everything was still in close proximity. We had a staff member come up to us to check us in when we are setting up camp and she was so lovely. She told us everything we need to know about the campsite, where the drinking water was, what animals will be roaming the park, the pet policy, etc. The campsites are very shady which was nice! The general store has your typical souvenir apparel and gifts but also groceries, essentials, and beer! We enjoyed our stay but probably wouldn't pick this campground again because we personally like more secluded campsites.

The cabins are pretty spacious, sleep 5 and have a nice outdoor patio, table and fire pit. Every cabin has parking for 1 car and bathrooms are shared nearby. The cabins were clean and basic, bring your own sleeping bag, pillow and whatever else you need. The only downside is the tiny bathroom, we had all cabins full and a good 120-130 people in the loop. But there is only 1 bathhouse with 3 toilet/sink/shower combo. It's not a regular bathhouse with 2 stalls shower, 3-4 toilets and 3 sinks. It was 3 actual bathrooms (they call it family bathrooms) that 100+ people have to share and get ready in the morning and nighttime. So once bathroom 1 had a family of 4 showering, that was blocked for half an hour. Got one more in the shower, you are down to a single toilet until someone decides to vacate the other bathrooms. Not ideal to say the least, you just have to get in line before you really really have to go. Lol The main lodge was across the street with good food options and there was also a small store and gas station on the campground side.

It was almost level and had a picnic table and fire pit. We spent a lot of time sitting outside and there were no bugs or mosquitos. They have pit toilets and spigots for water. It was very clean, well maintained and quiet. The walk to the lake was down some easy stairs and there was plenty of shoreline to fish. It is minutes from the entrance of Custer State Park and about 30 minutes from Mt Rushmore. The town of Custer is maybe 10 minutes away and has gas stations, a grocery store and restaurants. We stayed 3 nights and wished we could have stayed longer. We highly recommend this campground.

That wasn't working with our trip schedule so I was really excited to find I could reserve a single night at this campground. It's located only a couple miles out of the city of Custer, so really close to gas, groceries, and things to do. The campsite was really nice, it had a place for us to back into and then a walkway down to where you could pitch your tent. There are no showers at this campground, and other facilities are minimal. There is a porta potty and a faucet with running water outside. This was the priciest campground we stayed at on our trip. I reserved it online and it was around 30.00 a night. Plus the park entrance fee is 15.00. It is too bad that the most expensive campground we stayed at had the least amenities. The lake was beautiful, though we really didn't get a chance to enjoy it at all. Overall, it's definitely roughing it a bit more than other campgrounds, but it's clean and next to a beautiful lake. I wouldn't be opposed to staying here again in the future.

Sylvan Lake was easily one of the highlights of our trip to South Dakota and one of the most…read morebeautiful places we visited in the Black Hills. The scenery here is absolutely breathtaking. Crystal-clear water is surrounded by massive granite rock formations, towering pine trees, and some of the most picturesque landscapes you'll find anywhere in the region. One of our favorite parts was walking around the lake on the easy Shoreline Trail. The trail is well maintained and offers incredible views from every angle. We also enjoyed walking across the historic stone dam, which provides a fantastic vantage point for photos and a great perspective of the lake and surrounding rock formations. What makes Sylvan Lake special is that it's the perfect destination for almost everyone. Whether you enjoy hiking, photography, kayaking, swimming, rock scrambling, or simply relaxing in nature, there's something here for you. The area is clean, well cared for, and easy to access. The location is also an excellent starting point for hikers heading to Black Elk Peak, but even if you don't plan to do a longer hike, the lake itself is worth the visit. If you're exploring Custer State Park or driving the Needles Highway, don't miss Sylvan Lake. It's one of those rare places that looks even better in person than it does in photographs. This is an awesome campground within an incredible state park…read more We stayed two nights at Sylvan Lake Campground and were really impressed, especially by how clean everything was! I couldn't believe how spotless the bathrooms were every single time I went in, it was perfect. The electric sites are fairly close together, so if you're looking for more privacy, I'd recommend the walk-in sites. The unfortunate thing about the walk-in sites are the more secluded sites (like #16, #17, and #21) require a bit of an uphill trek. It's not a long walk, but it does take a little bit of effort to get everything up there. That said, Site #21 was one of the best campsites I've ever stayed in, it was worth the extra sweat. The only reason I'm giving this place four stars is because the trail to the walk-in sites is very rough. They do provide a wheelbarrow to help carry your stuff, but the terrain is so rocky that using it seemed like more trouble compared to just walking your stuff up. Overall we enjoyed our stay and everyone was so quiet, it really felt like it was just you in nature.

First, the hospitality and management are down to earth. Very friendly and were able to answer all our questions. They have a small store with some basics.. mustard, ketchup, and beer to name a few items. Very friendly. Second, the campsite was very reasonable considering full hookups and pull through. The campsites do share water, meaning one main water faucet that is split between two campsites. The pressure isn't a problem at all. Our problem was that my camper's water was on the front left of the camper. Given the sharing, my original 20 or so foot water hose couldn't reach. Our fault for not having an extension, but we ended up having to park the other way with the camper to hook up the water. Bottom line: we are newbie campers, so just make sure you have an extension. Lesson learned. They do have a cool little lake/pond that offers fishing and swimming as well as boat rentals. Water is clear and they have it sectioned off to prevent swimming too deep. Finally, you are within 5 or so minutes of Cold Brook Reservoir, an Army Corp of Engineers recreation area. They have a super nice beach, and facilities there. You are also within minutes of the cool little town of Hot Springs. If you are looking for a cool and out of the way campground with all the amenities, check this place out!

Every evening I was able to sit on the hill in a quiet and peaceful place to meditate. The lake is super clear and feels amazing, I felt like the water was healing. There is water sports activities to rent. There is cute cabins if you don't have an RV. There is laundry and a store to get things you need. My dogs loved going walking around the lake and the trails. I felt like I was in a high end resort with all the amenities. The price is rather cheap for what all your getting. The views and the environment are very peaceful! If your looking for a place in the black hills this is one that is worth the drive from the parks and gives you so much serenity.

Sunset RV Park is a small yet spacious park in the Black Hills that's geared for adults and seniors. Back-in sites with full hook-ups offering 30 and 50 amp receptacles, septic, and water. Located an easy 2 miles from downtown Custer. Picnic tables, yard games, community fire pit, and pet friendly. You must be self contained. We stayed in #6 campsite, which has trees, flowers and hanging bird feeders. We woke to birds chirping. We loved Bill and Tami...wonderful hosts. Quiet, peaceful...we felt safe and close to Custer State Park! Can't wait to go back!
