Kobe seems to have taken a hit on quality. Shrimp tasted different, ginger sauce not great and scallops not great. Then they label an extra charge of $2.75 as a tax, after 6% meal tax and Virginia state tax. At least label the tax correctly as credit card transaction fee. Very disappointing and another repeated lesson learned. read more

We arrived around 8pm on Tuesday. I ordered a Volcano roll, and what came out looked like the plan veggie sushi from the grocery store with a piece of salmon covered in a spicy sauce....cold, not great. The Hibachi style food was unimpressive as well, rice with mixed vegetables, chicken, steak, and mixed vegetables all cooked without much seasoning. The appetizers weren't impressive either. I originally was going to a different Asian restaurant but it look not great and I saw the people that went in. Decided to go to Kobe because I have gone to other Kobe restaurants. Lots of seating and looked clean. I only wanted sushi so sat in the bar. Ordered 2 rolls and a glass a wine. Staff was nice and checked on me. I hadn't been to this location in around 10 years and decided to stop in to try it since I recently moved back. We arrived and were quickly seated. The restaurant has definitely aged and could need some updating. The reason for the higher rating simply had to do with the food. My steak and my husbands steak were cooked perfectly. I also enjoyed the veggies. The chef didn't do any show really but he was really friendly. He ensured we got plenty of food and everything was cooked how we wanted. I wanted to mention the soup that comes at the beginning of the meal was a little bland but I enjoyed my salad a lot. We ordered the california roll and the bang bang shrimp sushi. Both were fresh with the right amount of flavors. The soup could could have be warmer and the salad was drenched in dressing. The chef made up for all of that by cooking filet mignon/scallops and lobster/shrimp to perfection. The rice and vegetables were excellent by themselves but I had to add the yum yum sauce to take the dish to the next level. For our meal including a tip was $70 they gave me the wrong vegetables there wasn't any zucchini or onions like usual, they forgot my husbands rice, and they told us we couldn't see them do it on the grill because they only do it on certain days. We came here for our anniversary and I was really disappointed. For that much I expect good service atleast. I will definitely travel the extra 25 minutes to Staffords Kobe it's so much better. We live in a food desert and had to go into F'brug, we decided to stop in for my belated birthday dinner. It was quite fun! There was no sushi chef for lunch so we went with kobe. It was a good choice. I didn't realize how much I missed the show, the humour and the food! We come here all the time. Phil the Sushi chef is awesome. We always get the Spotsy Roll and the Awesome Roll and I also get an order of chicken livers. I always intend to post pics but I get excited when the sushi comes out and want to start eating and always forget to take pics. Next time I will for sure. Our whole family loves Japanese steakhouses but not this one. While the people were nice, the chef put on a lackluster show. Our kids were very disappointed. My wife and I each got steak but both our cuts were extremely fatty, leaving very little meat. Considering the price, we expect more (quality and quantity). My mom and I are huge fans of hibachi-style dining and Japanese food so after shopping we decided to stop here for lunch. The restaurant is decently sized, clean, and in a great location with a parking lot. It was relatively empty when we arrive since they just opened forum here. The lunch menu was pretty pricey for lunch and around $17 for entree. In most of the hibachi-style restaurants, we usually get soup and salad, veggies, rice, and your choice of meat (s). However, we only received salad (which was basically frozen and took forever to get), carrots/mushrooms, and rice. I'm not sure if this was because it was lunch time but for $17 - i would have enjoyed more veggies. Food was cooked well. Our server was new and nice. The chef wasn't too engaging as others. Went to visit my dad and we both had a taste for some great fried rice. We went around 4pm and it was pretty dead in there, just staff. We got seated immediately which was a plus. Went to the Garrisonville location a few years ago and really liked it, so made a stop in here with my wife for lunch. We sat with a random assortment of people at a table, rest of the place was empty, although pretty nicely decorated. The chef was nice although I liked the show better at other places, he didn't do the flaming onion for example. Was quite happy with the food and portions, though. We got the same as I've had for dinner at other places, but the lunch costs a lot less. Our portions were cooked nicely so was happy with that. The sushi selection is also pretty decent, although they didn't have as many selections as the Garrisonville location did when I went there. So I'll give this location 3.75 stars. I would suggest going for lunch, as you still get a nice big portion for less cost. read more

My parents and I went to Kobe to celebrate their anniversary. After being served a bitter ginger salad and onion soup that tasted like water, the chef came to the table to prepare dinner for everyone. About 5 minutes after the chef began cooking the entire table gathered their belongings and walked out of the restaurant because a roach began crawling on the table and under a plate. My father spoke to the manager of the restaurant who stated that pest control had been to the restaurant three times that week and that there is nothing he could do about the problem. I am not sure how long Kobe has had pest problems, but stay away!! read more

If I could leave no stars I would. Do yourself a favor and LISTEN TO THE REVIEWS!!! Each one is 100% accurate for how this place is. We ordered the sirloin, easily HALF the portions we got were fat (as another review stated). The $22 hibachi steak meals are supposed to include soup and salad- we didn't get either of them. Everyone else at the table did though, so that was neat. Based off the other guests at our tables reaction to the soup, we probably didn't miss much. Our waitress also left the building for a solid 15 minute break while we were waiting on our gyoza. It finally came out soggy and cold, like it had been sitting there for that whole 15 minutes. She also awkwardly just stood behind us almost our whole meal while we ate and was poking someone's kid (super rude!!). The first check we got was wrong, she billed us for the more expensive ribeye- which would have honestly been fine if we had been served that but we weren't. She made kind of a scene about fixing it too, I get it's only about a $2 difference, but that's on top of the $8 for soup and salad we never got. Even the sweet tea was terrible. I'm telling you, save your money and put in the little extra drive time to another hibachi place. read more

The food is good but the service is terrible. They brought the appetizer and meal all at the same time and then never came back. There were 15 or more customers standing waiting for to go orders and people at tables that were trying to get anyone's attention. We watched two groups walk out after 30 minutes of waiting and no one came to take their order. This has been the experience the last 5 times we have gone. Food was good, chef was mildly entertaining (not as good as the previous restaurants chefs though). My major issue was how they handled my food allergy. I've gone to MANY Japanese steakhouses. I politely explain to the waiter when I order that I am allergic to shrimp. When the chef comes out, he explains to those at the table that someone has an allergy and ask them if they mind if he waits to cook the shrimp until last. Instead of following this pattern, the chef made me feel guilty about coming to eat at a place that serves shrimp. Needless to say, I was ready to walk out. His "compromise" was to cook it on one side of the grill. Once I explained that he could easily have a lawsuit on his hands if I were to have a reaction, suddenly it was possible for him to cook the shrimp last. I will never return and will give my business to Japanese steakhouses that want my business. I hope the owner reads this and fixes this. No one should be humiliated in front of family and strangers the way I was. read more

I went on Valentine's Day with my husband and son, so obviously it was very crowded. The service was awful. We got seated quickly, but it took about 20 minutes for the server to even take our orders. Then another 20 minutes before the chef came. The soup and salad didn't even show up to our table until after the chef arrived. I would give this restaurant a pass on the service since it was one of the most popular days to eat out, but I have heard the same complaint from others who went there on a normal evening. Moving on to the food...the price of the food compared to other similar restaurants in the area is far higher, $4 more for my usual meal (almost 20%). If I got more food for the astonishingly higher price, that would be fine, but in fact I received a LOT less food. The portions were tiny compared to other restaurants, so it's no wonder almost everyone at the table ordered double rice which tacks on an extra $3.50 to your already expensive meal. Another thing I found extremely weird was that our chef gave us the vegetables first. So, there sat my vegetables on my plate getting cold while he started the rest of the meal including the rice. I don't think anyone really eats the vegetables by themselves, you at least need some rice to go with them before you eat them. In any case, given the poor service, high prices, and small portions, there is no way I will be back to this restaurant even though it is the closest to my house. read more

I came here for lunch with some girlfriends and we sat at a table. It was a Sunday afternoon so it was quiet and we had the back of the restaurant to ourselves, which was nice. I ordered the bento lunch box with chicken katsu. The katsu was mediocre. The sauce on the chicken was more sour and I was expecting it to be sweeter than sour. The seaweed salad was amazing! So was the California roll! It had roe on it and it was the best California roll I've had! I expected the California roll to be an after thought, like it is everywhere else. But this one was full of flavor! The dumplings were pan fried (not deep fried) and they were better than I expected. The bento box came with either soup or salad. I chose the miso soup and it was mediocre. I've never had amazing miso soup. The bento also came with a bowl of rice and it was delicious! It was sushi rice and it was perfectly cooked. It wasn't as warm but eh, it was so good I didn't mind. The amount of food for my bento box was a pretty good amount. I was really full and I didn't even finish the rice. I like how the tables were away from the tappenyaki grill area because it gets quite loud when the show is going on. Service as satisfactory. I will be coming back! *Edit* So the last time I came here, which was probably late in 2013, the bento boxes stopped coming with seaweed salad. Just came home from lunch and it was AMAZING! The food was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Whenever I go to the Japanese Steakhouses I always end up getting something overcooked. Especially the chicken. Today I ordered the lunch sesame chicken and the chicken was cooked beautifully. It was still juicy. The flavors were right on. The soup was also great. And the seafood sauce was delicious. I literally poured it on all the food on my plate. I know this Kobe's and the Kobe's in Stafford are owned by the same man, but the food was better here. I can't wait to go back to take my husband and kids! I'm so happy to have a Kobe's in Fredericksburg! My husband may not be as thrilled since it can be pricey for a family of 6. read more

It's not often that I'm left this disappointed, but Kobe's sushi was extremely sub par, and overpriced. I ordered 3 rolls: spicy tuna, super dragon, and shrimp tempura. All three left me wishing I'd gone elsewhere. The spicy tuna, aside from a hit of spice, was nearly flavorless. The other two rolls had an overwhelmingly fishy flavor and odor. How do you mess up a shrimp tempura roll?! Who knows? Maybe their frying oil was old? Sorry, Kobe, even though I'm a local, I definitely won't be going back. read more
