So... meant to check in here the other day by I missed the boat. Been here a few times, but it's been a while. Last time they were located on the other side of the pier. I have come to be know as the "pearl whisperer" of sorts. Looking for black / blue pearls? I'm your man. At least the family thinks so. San Fran, San Diego, Redondo? I always seem to pick the black / blue pearls, regardless of locale. Well... I broke my streak. But, and it's a big but, I did succeed in a different manner this time. While I was confident I'd get the aforementioned unusual variety, I struck out. But alas... I've reached a new realm. While selecting an oyster for my granddaughter, I was amazed that my streak was broken. (Enter heartbreak here). But, upon opening, we were surprised with not one, but two, absolutely stunning pearls in my oyster of choice. The proprietor was so cool in his suggestion for a setting and now, my Bebe has a beautiful new, 2 pearl ring, in a stunning setting that she will hopefully remember for years to come. Highly recommend this shop for a fun family/friend/dating activity. This store is located in Redondo Pier. The store is very closed to the parking structure. Have to purchase parking tickets to park at the parking garage. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. He explained to me about the company, and their pearl. These are sea water pearls, and they are more valuable than fresh water pearls. The staff handed us the tongs, and we picked an oyster. The staff than opened the oyster for us. This is an exciting process as it is like opening a labubu blindbox that you do not know what you will get. I was very lucky that I scored a double blue/gray pearls. They are very similar in size, and the staff recommended me to make it into a pair of earrings. He is patient and recommended me a setting, and I agreed! One of my favorite places to go to! I was there twice today! The people who work there are super friendly. The oysters and pearls I have gotten there over the years are amazing! They have settings for your pearls, rings earring and necklaces the prices are more than fair for the jewelry . They offer sterling silver and it is very nice quality. I highly recommend this shop!! If I could give negative stars, I would. The older gentleman working as a salesperson at this store has absolutely no basic customer service skills. He was incredibly rude, dismissive, and disrespectful. My husband previously bought me three pearls from this store, but he wanted me to choose how I wanted them made into jewelry. I decided to have them turned into a bracelet, so I made a special trip to the store today. When I walked in, there were two families ahead of me, so I patiently waited my turn. After they were finished, instead of helping me, the salesman completely ignored me. He turned toward the window and started serving another group of customers outside, as if I didn't exist. I kept waiting, expecting him to at least acknowledge me or say something as simple as, "How can I help you?" Isn't that basic courtesy? After waiting for quite a while, I finally said, "Excuse me, I've been waiting in line for a long time. I was right behind the other family inside." Without even turning around, he coldly replied, "The line is outside," and continued helping the people outside as if nothing had happened. I was furious--not just because I had been ignored, but because of how indifferent and disrespectful he was. If the line was supposed to be outside, he could have simply told me when he first saw me waiting there 30 minutes earlier. Instead, he let me stand there and waste my time. To make matters even worse, when he was helping the second family ahead of me, there was nothing to indicate that the line started outside. He let them browse the pearls and even asked whether they wanted the pearls made into jewelry. I was there for the exact same reason--I already had three pearls purchased from this store. Before I left, I told him, "You could have told me the line was outside a long time ago so I wouldn't have wasted my time. Treating customers this way is incredibly disrespectful." Then I walked out. This family owned business has been at this location for 53 years!! Insane right!!! The oysters are coming all the way from Japan and the pearls take roughly about 5 years to calcify. The owner was so nice and explained the process very well. I had my son pick out the oyster and I picked out the necklace myself!! They attach your pearl to your choice of jewelry and you just need to let it set for 15 hours before you wear your new jewelry! You also get a certificate of the pearl as well. I absolutely love my new necklace!! Perfect timing for all the holiday get togethers we were going to! Loved the entire experience! I had such a magical time! The two men that worked there on the 15th of February were so kind and very knowledgeable! The whole experience was so special. They made me and my husband feel so comfortable. They even opened earlier than their hours that were posted on their door because they saw us waiting outside. It was pretty exciting being able to choose a random oyster and not knowing what type of pearl or how many would be inside .I was so surprised to see so many affordable jewelry options in sterling silver. Purchasing jewelry was optional. You can just participate in the process of selecting your own Pearl for only $15.99 I think. You can choose to have the Pearl mounted on your own or come back later to pick jewelry. My Pearl actually appears for $79. The value of my single Pearl was more than what I paid for the experience and the jewelry . So it was a total win. It only took 20 minutes to create my necklace. The Redondo Beach Pier is so beautiful and scenic. It was no problem passing the time by walking around. I would definitely recommend this for a unique experience especially during the summer. I went in to the store, with two people being helped before me by one employee but who made eye contact with me. The other employee, an elderly gentleman, was cleaning something or near the register. Two more sets of people walked in behind me. The older man didn't even acknowledge me, but helped the people after me. I walked out, got food and came back around 30 minutes later. The first employee recognized me and asked if I wanted to get any pearls today. I said yes I did as well as having some questions. I asked about prices for jewelery for my friends gift and mentioned bringing her the next day, and went outside near the oysters to wait as he was checking out customers for a jewelry pick up. Two more women shoved in front of me at the "oyster bar" and the older gentleman who didn't acknowledge me helped one of them. The same employee I spoke to came over to the "bar" and helped the other woman, despite seeing me standing right there. I walked away again. I will never give this company my business. I'm so over joyed and then Blayne starts talking to me and I tell him I remember being a kid and seeing this place many times only wishing to be able to get my own pearl. Side note Blayne is such an amazing person ! He was super kind and it very easy to connect with. Okay so at this point my daughter has been talking about wanting her own Pearl as a Christmas gift given it's one of her birthstones so it's very special she gets one here. Blayne explained that these oyster are shipped from Japan and we are looking at 5 years of work! She is given some wooden tongs and picks an oyster. Blayne explains that there can be colored ones that are like pastel colors but never neon as some or put out on social media. Also that some can have 2 or 1 pearls. She picks one with 1 pearl and her reaction is simply amazing. I couldn't help but want my own and I grab the tongs and close my eyes do a little prayer and pick one and you guys Blayne opens it and there are 2 pearls and one of them is slightly pink. He cleans them up and evaluates them and outs puts them in a little bag and I'm just like processing you know what my 7 year old self would think if she saw me now. He told us it takes around 5 years for a oyster to form a pearl. You get to choose your oyster (I believe it was 11-12$ per oyster) & watch them crank it open and get your own one of a kind pearl.. pearl could be white/pink, blue, gray, etc. could be even lucky and find two inside one. It's a complete mystery. You have the option to keep your pearl as is or have them mount your pearl onto jewelry. You just purchase one of their jewelry settings and they mount the jewelry for free. They have a beautiful selection of rings and necklaces at very reasonable prices. I opted for a necklace that will sit lower beneath my everyday necklace. Saw Kobe Pearl & Gem from an LA Fair booth and decided to visit their actual location. At the LA Fair their booth had long lines and tons of people waiting to choose an oyster for pearls. It was around $11-$12 an oyster. Sounds like a really cool experience! Kobe Pearl & Gem is located on the Fisherman's Wharf in Redondo Beach. Parking was pretty crowded since there are other businesses in the area. You might have to wait around a bit for someone to leave. Plus there's a parking meter to feed so be weary of your time. The shop has a really nice store front with a live oyster tank and a jewelry store inside for setting pearls. Service is excellent. They go into details about the pearl(s) that you got, such as color, size, and any blemishes it may have. They also provide you an estimated value of your pearl(s). There's no sales pressure to set your pearls. If you do decide to set them they have plenty of settings inside the store to choose from, such as earrings, necklaces, and/or rings. You can even watch them set the pearls which is really neat! Overall very pleasant experience. Highly recommend bringing that someone for their birthday, anniversary, or just for fun! read more

I've been soo skeptical my whole life over these booths. So it took my 14yo daughter to break the curse. She's been wanting to do this for years despite my discouraging her (bad mom!). She began researching the ones you buy online and decided to try the location at the Redondo Beach Pier due to the reviews. I will say it was a great experience that I would recommend. I mean, it's only $11.50! You pick the oyster and the staff opens it. My daughter was surprised to get 2 real black pearls. They were spot appraised for $84 total at 6mm. I'm sure it's not a 100% accurate appraisal but it was good enough. They have lots of settings, some that will hold more than 1 pearl, and some that require drilling into the pearl while others don't. They will set it for you in about 20 mins. in-house. Some are cheaper than others. We paid $70 for 1 pearl set into a necklace and the other saved future setting. Some may call this "the catch", but they don't require that you buy their settings. It's totally voluntary. If they made you purchase their settings that would have turned this experience into a gimmick. Some setting are more, some less. The "pearl maid" was very nice, patient and friendly and gave a little background on the pearls which was interesting. She said they were 5year old mollusks from Japan. Cool. During a visit to Redondo Beach Pier for my birthday to have dinner, my husband and I took a walk around the pier and discovered this little hidden gem. We noticed a couple standing in front of a fish tank in front of the Kobe Pearl & Gem. Our curiosity led us to create this beautiful pendant we were able to create from just two oysters we picked for one another. The irony in all of this is we are soon to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary on12-12-22 and the pearl represents the 30th. Each pearl will represent 10 years together for us. To say this was a great experience would diminish the feelings we will forever cherish from visiting Kobe Pearl and Gem.
