Kohn's has been a staple in the St. Louis Jewish community that I was raised in and is now the only kosher meat establishment. Simon Kohn was the founder and godfather for my uncle who like his parents survived the Holocaust and immigrated to St. Louis for a better life, Lenny Kohn was the next owner until recently that catered to my bar mitzvah back in 2003, and AJ Moll who my family knows from synagogue is the new owner that is working hard to maintain and improve this place. My wife was curious so my mother agreed to take us on the way to the airport. It was a busy Monday lunch time on President's Day and the staff behind the counter seemed overwhelmed, so it may help to have waitstaff during busy times. Nonetheless, the Killer Pastrami and Bagel Dogs were both delicious and affordable and filled us up to the point we were not that hungry for dinner. A nice variety of kosher products and a good place to grab a quick bite. There are several tables and the deli is self serve. I was with a big group so a waitress took our order and brought us our food. It was not as good as a New York deli, but that was not surprising. The staff members were pleasant and friendly! There were a lot of products in the grocery section which I had never seen before. There is an extensive freezer and refrigerated section along with dry goods. My spouse, mom, and I went into this deli today. It looked clean, smelled good, and we stood there for 10 minutes at the deli counter to order sandwiches. They were not busy at all. Only 2 customers were there and they already had ordered. Here's the thing -- we were never greeted and no one took our sandwich order. There were 2 employees behind this counter talking. One in the kitchen just standing there. Another was out walking around the other counter. All four employees saw me seeing them, see me and they averted their eyes. Now it was not closing time! It was about 2p and pretty sure they close at 3 or 4p. So I had to report on their abysmal customer service because Yelp has them listed as 4+stars. read more

Had a truly wonderful brunch and experience at Kohn's today. I had to laugh when I read other reviews about how Kohn's was rude to non-Jewish customers, and I laughed even more after my time there, because they were over-the-top friendly and courteous. And no, I am not Jewish! Soon after my son and I entered, we were asked if we needed any help, and I said no we were looking around as we had not been there before and wanted to check it all out. Not very long after, a man in the deli area brought us a sample of their incredibly delicious pastrami that they make in house. It was not a tiny sample, it was an actual slice of pastrami, and it was the best I've had, not overly salty and just the right amount of pepper. We also were offered a sample of the roast beef which was very rare and tender. While we were waiting for our order, a man from the kitchen brought us a sample of their falafels, which my son quite enjoyed. Maybe we got some extra attention because it was not very busy yet, but I was happy for it! We ordered scrambled eggs with lox, which came with a bagel, a little thing of cream cheese, and onion, tomato, lettuce. I've never had lox in my eggs, but I will definitely say yes to that again. We chose a plain bagel - there were other varieties - and it was toasted well with a perfect chew. Even though the pastrami sample was fantastic, we chose to share a roast beef sandwich, which we got on rye (again, there were other choices for bread), and we asked for horseradish mixed in with a little mayo. The beet horseradish, in addition to giving it a pretty color, was spicy and a little bit sweet, and was great on the sandwich. The sweet kugel was sweet all the way through, not just on top, but it wasn't overly sweet, and I believe they were some golden raisins or maybe some apple in there. They warmed it up for us, and it was really very good. The potato latke had little bits of onion in it and came to us warm and delicious. As we were checking out, I couldn't help but get something from their pastry counter (there wasn't a huge selection, maybe five or six things) and I chose a giant sugar cookie, which was soft and chewy, just how I like them. I also had a sample of their raspberry rugelach, and it was wonderful. Totally going back - there were so many other things I wanted to try. Even though we were there at 10:30, they let us order lunch - the man behind the counter said that he'd been "making sandwiches since 7:30", so apparently you can eat whatever you want off the menu at any time of day. Good to know! There's also a little grocery store area, and there were several things there that I had not seen at other stores. They have a meat counter in addition to the deli area. I have never written a review, which means a lot for this one. I originally called Kohn's to place a Passover order, as their flyer said I could call or email to do this. When I called, the worker very rudely explained to me that I needed to place my order online. Fine, no big deal, but I wanted to make sure that my order was going to be received if placed via email, since the flyer said the orders needed to be in by EOD that Sunday. When I asked, the worker very rudely told me I needed to hold my phone up to my mouth if I wanted to talk, or he was going to hang up because it's Passover week and he was busy. Even though my first interaction was terrible, I placed my order via email, but did not receive a response indicating it was received. I called the day before to see if they received my order, and the owner informed me he didn't know where the workers were with the orders, and that they closed soon, so I needed to get there, and they would try to make me happy. Considering the first two interactions, I didn't want to push my luck just to see if they had any food to spare for me, for $180. While I would love to try one of the only Jewish delicatessens in St. louis, I will probably never try it due to the lack of customer service and organization I experienced. They are clear, the are not NY style bagels, they are more dense. While my quest for incredible bagels does not have parity with fanatic quest for steaks and pizza I have tried and few places only to be disappointed by another "factory" in a similar part of town. The bagels here were fresh Sunday morning, purposely chosen after the sabbath to ensure I would not get a leftover bagel from the prior day. The everything bagel was well appointed and covered with seasonings. The toasting proved to develop the outer crust and crunch to the toasted surface. The inside in chewy and dense as they indicate. Perhaps not as light I would desire but given they are made in-house and it is a great family business I will say their take is well worth the stop. Roll in for a bagel today. If you want or need to eat kosher food this is the best place in St. Louis with the most selection. I'm in it for the pastrami. They have THE BEST deli style pastrami in St. Louis. It's a generous portion served on seeded rye with spicy brown mustard. They slice it to order. Other things are good but this is the best. While I was there I picked up some bagels, 3 flavors of rugelach, a tub of cream cheese, and a couple of miscellaneous groceries. I wanted some lox or salmon spread to go with the bagels but they didn't have any. This isn't my regular bagel stop but they were pretty good and I would get them again if I was there. I got chocolate, raspberry, and cinnamon rugelach. I thought the cinnamon and raspberry were delicious! I stop in here a few times a year, mostly when I want a pastrami sandwich, and of course I'll be back. read more

I did however hear from the owner asking me to try again, and while it took some time, I did go back and while the people at the meat counter were very rude, every other employee, the bakery lady, and another man who may be the owner :) not sure we're very friendly. The food was good, although I don't know that I would get a latke again, but other sides did look good so I would try something different. I'd been really really looking forward to having real deli. I moved here from California, Brent's, Langers, Wexlers etc.... Some real gold standard food. I was hoping I could at least get something close to it. Nope. Got a to go order of corned beef on rye, a potato knish and a matzoh ball soup. Honestly I was shocked at how meh it all was. The corned beef sandwich was wrapped tightly in plastic so the rye bread was damp and gluey, no chew to the crust at all. The corned beef had a good flavor, I've never seen it cut so thin with so few pieces. At first I thought it was extra Rye for the soup, like Brent's gives you. Nope that sad Saran wrapped rye was my sandwich. The knish was very small and very pale and not well seasoned. The matzo ball soup was literally a ball and broth, no chicken no veggies no lokshen (noodles). The strongest flavor of the soup was actually..... green pepper????!!! Stopped in for lunch yesterday, taking the advice from a clerk @ Lou Fusz Subaru. I bought the "killer pastrami " sandwich($8.99), and it really was a killer sandwich. Warm pastrami on homemade rye, with mustard. The sandwich was nicely sized and absolutely delicious. I opted for potato salad on the side for $1(other options were pasta salad, coleslaw, and maybe chips?), and wasn't quite as impressed with it. I have been going to Kohn's Deli ever since 1995, and the food has always been delicious and consistent! I love the variety, the authenticity, and the people I get to meet when I go there. With almost 30 years of patronage under my belt, I can say that the service has always been phenomenal as well. I was sad to see Lennie and his family leave the business, but I guess there comes a time when we all have to begin a new chapter and turn the page. So very grateful that the new owners of the establishment have chosen to continue the tradition in such fine fashion. They had made subtle changes that were nice, but the food remains delicious and for that I am truly grateful. Such a wonderful tradition here in St Louis. I'm not a big fan of anything else they serve here...not because it may not be good, it's just I can't get anything BUT the killer pastrami on Jewish rye with mustard. It's phenomenal! Although the pastrami was good the prices we paid for our kids to eat were ridiculous. We ordered them chicken nuggets and got charged $16 for a small basket for just dry flavorless chicken. When we asked about the price they said they charge by the pound which we never saw a weight and no way it was a pound. Then we had meals with our sandwiches which is said to come with a drink but then we proceeded to get charged for our drinks again. This was my second stop here in a few months. My first time was unremarkable but I didn't feel good so I didn't write a review in case it wouldn't be accurate taste wise. Today I stopped with Three coworkers for lunch. We each got a sandwich meal which came with a side and drink. The server behind the meat case was friendly and attentive. Our sandwich order consisted of Two pastrami, one corn-beef and one roast beef. our sides were tomato cucumber salad, potato salad, macaroni salad. We shared food for tasting purposes. Our conclusions were the sandwiches were over rated especially the pastrami and cornbeef. We all thought the meat was dry and rather bland. Mustard helped. The fresh store made rye bread was excellent. The sides were very fresh and tasty. The serving size was adequate. Fresh homemade pickles were a nice touch. Overall we were disappointed. The meats were just okay. The bread and sides were the highlight. Prices were on the high side. One person bought some cookies and a pastry to take home. Later reported the cookies were dry tasting and expensive at $3 a piece. The facility is clean, staff helpful. Won't go back again. read more

Most of the items are canned, frozen, or opt for all the prepared foods. They also have in-house made challah bread, bagels, other desserts or from breadsmith bakery. There is a relatively large section to dine in with a TV. To Dos: You come for the delish pastrami sandwiches. Unreliable hours and product availability. While the store has transitioned to new management I'll give it another chance.

I have been a customer for many years and drove miles to purchase wonderful pastrami sandwiches. Was there 2 weeks ago, the store looked dirty, the sandwich was puny compared to what I was used too and service was sloooo. What happened to this store. This is a cute kosher deli and grocery store. The owners and employees are super friendly and accommodating. They have a small Sunday breakfast buffet that I went to try. You seat yourself & serve yourself, then just let the cashier know you had the buffet. There were bagels, lox, tomatoes, onion & cucumber, cream cheese, scrambled eggs, potatoes and cherry blintzes. It was pretty picked over by the time I got there (10:30 am) and was not re-stocked. It was simple and good, but not great, so I don't think I'll go back for breakfast but I will go back to try their turkey pastrami. Travelling through this area from Texas. We stopped for the "experience " of a genuine kosher deli...and we weren't disappointed! We both had the Killer Pastrami and it was great. Another customer (originally from NY) said this was her father's favorite pastrami. We also tried a few pastries and bought a bag of "day-old" bagels. My mother ordered food for the Passover Seder and the order was incorrect. When asked where the ceaser dressing was, their response to my mom was, we were too busy. She ordered half orders of everything and when we picked it up, it was a full order and was told, it was too hard to do a half order so they took it upon themselves without asking to make us full orders, and charged us full price. She ordered turkey with the gravy on the side and it came on the turkey, and asked for the roasted califlower to be sprayed with spray, not oil, yet they put oil on it (you could taste the oil) and told her they sprayed it. Worst experience I've ever had at a deli. I arrived at 1:25pm on a Tuesday, there were three people in line at the deli and it took 25 minutes to put in my to go order. The entire time I was there it was extreme chaos and one of the workers, Shelly Dean, could not have made the situation more frustrating. After finally getting to the register, she disappears, comes back, disappears, comes back and gets a phone call. She could barely multitask to talk on the phone and ring up my order.
