    Gyudon donburri (5.28.26)
    Carroll N.

5.28.26 Service: Enzo was a consummate professional--hospitable, respectful, knowledgeable, and personable. He addressed us as "ma'am" and carried himself with excellent manners throughout. He offered thoughtful recommendations for both beverages and sushi and demonstrated a strong familiarity with the menu. Food: One friend found the tuna sashimi slightly mushy in texture, though she still enjoyed the overall flavor of the sushi and sashimi selections. Another friend thoroughly enjoyed her ecstasy rolls. I ordered the gyudon donburi; the flavors were solid, though the dish leaned a bit oily--likely from the sautéed onions--and I would have appreciated a bit more sauce. That said, the ribeye beef itself was flavorful and well-prepared. Ambiance: The space is beautifully designed, with lanterns and murals that create a distinctly Japanese-inspired atmosphere. Final Verdict: Excellent service, inviting ambiance, and solid food. I would gladly return.

    Outstanding sushi omakase

Koi Sushi opened only about three weeks ago, and after seeing so many great reviews I had to check it out myself. I'm always on the lookout for omakase--there aren't many places that offer it in the immediate area--so whenever I see it on a menu I make a point to try it. Without exaggeration, this was the best omakase I've had in Montgomery County. My personal all-time favorite experience is still my buddy Ricky's Michelin-star omakase on Barracks Row, which is a full multi-course experience. Koi Sushi's omakase is a much smaller nine-piece set, which is why it's only a fraction of the price, but the quality of the sushi itself comes remarkably close. The sushi omakase I had was $75, and the sashimi omakase (which I didn't order) was $85--both extremely reasonable for the quality being served. It also came with a delicious miso soup. The entire experience was outstanding. The wagyu beef, finished with truffle oil, was incredible. The madai was charred perfectly and topped with a beautiful purple salt that elevated the flavor even further. The toro was absolutely out of this world, finished with a delicate gold leaf. The uni was served at the perfect chilled temperature, clearly flown in from Japan, and it was obvious they're sourcing exceptional product--I've had uni at top restaurants in Japan and this was a very similar experience. Every single piece felt thoughtfully composed. The chef clearly knows exactly what topping or finish will enhance each fish without overpowering it. My wife also loved what she ordered. The California hand roll and shrimp tempura hand roll were both excellent, and the purple sweet potato fries with a delicious purple dipping sauce were a fun and surprisingly great addition. The experience was so incredible that at the end of the meal I stood up and gave the sushi chef a fist bump. After that, my wife and I even started applauding the chefs--it was that kind of meal. I ended up asking a few questions and learned that the chef previously made sushi at a five-star hotel in New York, which absolutely shows in the precision and quality of his work. I had a great conversation with the owner, who was very swee and patient, about some of my other favorite omakase spots--like Omakase at Barracks Row. It turns out she knows that same foodie circle as well, including Ricky's wife, who owns Han Spot, China Garden, and Han Place. A couple very minor things they'll likely refine as they settle in: the seaweed on the California hand roll could have been a little crisper, and the timing of the service could be improved, as my wife was mostly finished with her meal before my omakase was served. But they've only been open a few weeks, and I'm confident they'll work out those small details quickly. Even with those minor points, they absolutely still deserve five stars. If they keep up this level of quality and consistency, Montgomery County might finally see its first Michelin star.

First time here. The decor is really cute. We were told the owner loves labubus and there was also spirited away decor. The service was great. Our server was so friendly and helpful. Both rolls were delicious but I liked the emperor roll the best. The tea was delicious and perfect for summer. We got hot tea since it was a rainy night but you can get it iced as well. We also got mango and strawberry mochi for dessert that came with whipped cream. I would come here again and try their other rolls and drinks

I stopped by on a work trip as we were craving sushi but didn't want to venture too far from our hotel. As soon as we were seated, the waiter was super helpful in ensuring we felt comfortable and knew what was good to order. We took him up on his suggestions and loved all the specialty rolls. I can't say the best sushi I've had given I'm from california and spoiled by authentic spots, but for the area, I can definitely see myself returning when I need my sushi fix.

We stopped in for an early dinner. The restaurant has an elegant vibe. The staff was friendly and service was prompt. They have happy hour Sunday through Thursday from 3-6 pm. We certainly took advantage of that. 3 rolls and Edamame from the happy hour menu. All were delicious. We also got the Hell Ramen - it's their extra spicy Ramen. Pretty tasty. Spicy but not too spicy. We will be back.

I wanted to give this place a 4.5. I believe they will get better with time. The new kids on the block are making a beautiful ruckus. I have been here before and after they got the liquor license. The full menu is in effect, and I think we can expect amazing things from the new restaurant. I am going to bring my friends and stop by every chance I get when I am around. I believe that they are going to be great! friendly atmosphere welcoming, and most importantly all of the food so far has been delicious. I can't wait until I have a chance to really di dive deep into the menu and that's when the update will come but look at the pictures and tell me what you think. I believe you will like him. Give him a try and let me know what you think.

Ecstasy roll. Scallop roll. Crispy rice roll. Those came up to $50. Not huge rolls but I'm glad that it's not rolls w huge amount of rice. OMG I love their rolls. Scallop roll is my fav. I think they use better quality fish as well.

I stopped by Koi Sushi for a quick bite on a Sunday afternoon. We were seated right away. The staff were friendly. The fish was fresh. Nice and comfortable ambiance. The only thing we didn't like was sitting at the sushi counter. The staff kept reaching over and around us to get the dishes to serve other customers. It dampened our experience and I felt there had to be another way around it.

We came to this newest addition in the Rio cluster. It was perhaps their second week of opening. This is a good Asian option in the Rio lineup of food establishments. The sushi rolls and sashimi were fresh. Cocktails are inventive. We also ordered a ramen which is adequate but not really their specialty I would say. The place is not big and tables are mostly set up for parties of four. Any group bigger than that could be a stretch for the restaurant at least for now. Service is quick and friendly. Decibel level is manageable. I will definitely come back to try other offerings on the menu.

First time here and it absolutely did not disappoint -- I'm already planning my second visit. We came for sushi night and every single dish we ordered was spot on. I really appreciated how generous they were with the fish -- thick, fatty cuts across the board, even on the happy hour menu. Definitely worth it!

We visited Koi Sushi on just their third day in business for a family dinner, and overall it was a lovely start for a brand-new spot with lots of potential. We kicked things off with Japanese Green Tea and Miso Soup -- both comforting and a great way to warm up on a chilly evening. The Avocado Salad (with ginger dressing) was light, fresh, and nicely balanced, with a bright dressing that didn't overpower the greens. For appetizers, the Agedashi Tofu had a delicate crispy exterior and soft center, served in a savory broth that soaked in beautifully. The Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura (appetizer portion) was a highlight -- especially the variety of vegetables, including taro, pumpkin, zucchini, and sweet potato. The batter was light and crisp without feeling greasy. The Sashimi Set (16 pieces) was beautifully presented and tasted fresh. The salmon really stood out -- buttery, clean, and my personal favorite on the plate. For an entrée, we shared the Chicken Teriyaki, which featured tender slices of chicken breast in a sweet and savory glaze, sautéed with green peppers and onions. It came with steamed carrots and broccoli, and a bowl of white rice. There were also several items on the menu we didn't get to this time but are already eyeing for our next visit -- especially the Crispy Salmon Tartare, Takoyaki, Unagi Foie Gras Toast, and the Princess Roll. Overall, a strong start for Koi Sushi -- fresh fish, well-executed classics, and a menu that works well for both sushi lovers and those who prefer cooked dishes. Definitely a spot we'd return to as they settle in!

Bonus points for the strawberries marinating in the cocktail because yes, I absolutely used my fork to scoop them out of the glass. No shame. The ceviche sampler was fresh, bright, and flavorful. The Nikkei Sticky Ribs were deliciously sticky and savory. The scallop dish gave me chargrilled oyster vibes. And the pork belly bao buns? That crispy-yet-chewy pork belly skin was a whole moment. Since we were using the boardroom for work on our laptops, we didn't have space to order food, but my colleagues did order beverages. Our server checked on us frequently, refilled our water, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the retreat. My only critique is that the boardroom occasionally got loud due to staff running up and down the stairs or noise from the level above. Melissa suggested in lieu of ordering food during our retreat, to transition into the Speakeasy upstairs afterwards. She connected me with Brian, the general manager, who reserved a table for us and helped coordinate our appetizers pre‑order. I requested that the appetizers be ready at 6 p.m. for our reservation, and they were waiting for us when we arrived. We'll have to look for an opportunity when we are around the dog all day, so she can be on her own for a couple of hours, likely sleeping. Birdsong already is acclaimed. This is much more Thai and Thai American. Like Chinese or Italian cuisine before it, Thai flavors have assimilated to a palate not accustomed to the true strength of the spices. Birdsong is a remedy. They do not offer the pad thai that has become a staple, no longer exotic but to its detriment. (A digression. The history of pad thai, with contested origins, is fascinating. As you delve into these matters, you see how syncretic culture is. You also are exposed to the efforts to fashion a unifying mythology.) We ordered the chicken, the shrimp, the crab fried rice, the papaya salad, and the enhancement. The chicken and the shrimp were quality ingredients, prepared well. Although both proteins were fried, they felt clean. The crab fried rice was one option of many with the rice base. The papaya salad was fresh. The enhancement was radish with "fermented daikon, garlic, red onion, cilantro, palm sugar, and fish sauce scrambled with eggs for a balanced savory and sweet flavor," and the portion was generous: we put it on the rice, then I finished it off in an omelet the next morning. We have traveled to Bangkok. Thai spiciness exceeds what I would endorse, and I love hot dishes. Birdsong was much milder, though with sufficient pepperiness my wife, who does not share my preferences, remarked it was closer to her limit. They will work with you in this respect, and I'm confident I could request something that would test my capabilities. That is, in my book, all positive. The dishes that were mild according to the menu, were mild, but they were flavorful. If you do not like fish sauce, for example, you may not appreciate the offerings, which if they don't have fish sauce have something along those lines. I hope Birdsong fares well.

But we thought only one of the four dishes we ordered was especially good, I wouldn't order the other three again. The Basil Shrimp - described as "Battered and golden fried" seemed more like tempura. I wouldn't have ordered if I knew. The Tom Yum soup was good, but very pricey at $25. For comparison, a similarly sized, likely an even larger entree Tom Yum soup at Bambu is $14. It had lots of noodles. We were sharing, and asked our server for recommendations- she suggested a second dish with the same noodles. Usually a server points out if diners are ordering two dishes with the same base ingredient (noodles) but our server actually suggested the second one. Seriously? And unfortunately, it was underwhelming, just blah. We left most of it. We got the chocolate crème brûlée, the presentation was very nice, with gilded peanuts on top. The taste was just so so, sweet but not much chocolate flavor. We liked the decor and the atmosphere was nice. We loved the bird mural. Service was mixed. Our server was friendly, but could have been more helpful. First, the recommendation for a second dish with the same noodles was not a good one. We asked if we could share everything, including the soup. We specifically asked if they could put it into bowls for us. They brought two bowls, but we had to wait a while for a spoon to divide it ourselves at the table. She ended up bringing us one of those small soup spoons that you often use for soup at Chinese restaurants. It was around the same size as a regular soup spoon. Apparently they didn't have anything that is more like a ladle, and it was not very useful for portioning out the soup. We thought we'd love this restaurant, but it was a miss for us tonight. Not only that, and this is on us, the only dish with any real nutrition or healthy ingredients was the soup. For one "small plate" appetizer, two entrées and one dessert, the total was just under $100.
