My friends and I had a wonderful evening at Umami Sushi and Grill. Umami Sushi and Grill is located on Willis Ave in Albertson, NY. There is a parking lot, but I had to wait for a car to leave to get a spot. I had made a reservation for 6 people at 7:00pm earlier in the week. My friends were running late, but I was seated in the meantime. Umami Sushi and Grill is modern, stylish, and spacious. We were seated in a private nook like an open bird cage and it allowed for a private and intimate dining experience. It was all of ours first time here and can't wait to go back. We started with the Mushroom Salad and Rock Shrimp Tempura Bites for appetizers. The mushroom salad had sautéed seasonal mushrooms with yuzu dressing. The rock shrimp was battered and lightly fried served with yuzu creamy spicy aioli sauce. The mushroom salad was refreshing and the rock shrimp flavor was great. We also ordered a bottle of Mio sparkling sake. I've always enjoyed this sake so I had to order it when I saw it on the menu. It is light, fruity, and slightly sweet. I ordered the Shaggy Dog Roll which had shrimp tempura inside, topped with crab meat, crunch, spicy mayo, and eel sauce. Very yummy and savored every bite. For dessert, I had the matcha cheesecake and I enjoyed it very much. The matcha cheesecake was packed with matcha flavor and it was creamy and luscious. The portion was smaller than the fried cheesecake and the fried ice cream that my friends got, but that was totally okay since the matcha cheesecake was so rich. Umami Sushi and Grill was the perfect place for my friends and I to catch up. Service was wonderful and we stayed at the restaurant for about 3 hours. I've been to this location as its previous iteration several years ago. My friends said that the food is excellent, so five of us went to Umami and had a very nice meal. Our servers were friendly enough, but the overall vibe is a little less friendly. They definitely wanted to get us out of there to potentially turn over the table (even though there wasn't a wait to get in). That said, the sushi was very fresh and delicious. If you want some good quality sushi in Long Island. come here! It's in a great location where it isn't deep in Long Island and not far from Queens. There's also a parking lot with plenty of spaces to park in. The inside is spacious and well decorated, love the indoor ambiance. I came for dinner with several friends to celebrate a few birthdays in my friend group. There were 12 of us so we made a reservation and they placed us in a back room that ended up only being our group (although there were other tables inside so if it was really busy, I'm sure they would've been filled). The staff was friendly and accommodating with our large group. We ordered a bunch of apps, sushi rolls, and udon to share amongst us and everything was delicious. I would recommend anything on the menu. There truly wasn't a bad bite and the quality of the fish is really top tier. The rolls are also packed unlike some places which might put more rice. The outside is very deceiving. Someone had recommended but I was a little nervous, but can't judge a book by its cover. The inside is giving a zen vibe with every table feeling like its own little section. It's definitely on the pricier side, but the fish is very fresh. We went for lunch, we each got the 3 roll special. Each piece had a lot of fish. We also got the gyoza, they weren't the best I've ever had but it had the crispy pan skirt which I enjoyed. The lunch option came with soup or salad. We got one of each. The miso soup very much lived up to the umami name. The salad didn't have the typical carroty ginger dressing it was more like a sesame oil dressing and the salad was vibrant. I went here for dinner with friends on a Wednesday night. It's a new restaurant in Albertson and shares a parking lot with a shopping center. The restaurant is beautifully designed and has some really cool dining areas, one pictured below. The waiter we had overall was really knowledable and very patient. I just did not like that I felt like he was trying to make us leave at the end of our meal. He didn't even offer us dessert. The hot green tea was flowing and they don't charge for refills, which was nice. We ordered rock shrimp tempura and miso cod lettuce wrap for appetizers. Both were really good. The cod was nice and buttery. I highly recommend them both. I ordered the shashimi combo that came with a soft shell crab roll and my friend got the sushi and shashimi combo. My other friend ordered 2 rolls. One soft shell crab roll and one shaggy dog roll. The combo platters came with miso soup, which was so salty, we couldn't finish it. I had maybe two spoonfuls. The sushi wasn't great. The softshell crab didn't taste fresh at all. I enjoyed my shashimi but it wasn't the best I ever had. Hardly any variety, mostly salmon. My friend liked her sushi and sashimi combo and my mother friend's shaggy dog roll was good. We all tried it and liked it. She felt the same way that I did about the soft shell crab roll. After splitting out, there is a piece of staples in the crab poked my mouth, not sure if I swallowed other half piece. If you live on Long Island, love sushi and have not yet been to Umami, you are seriously missing out. This restaurant, which calls itself "Contemporary Japanese Cuisine," is exactly that and more, worthy of its aspirational name, and because of its excellent sushi, great service and amazing elegant seating, it worth the trip from wherever you are. As soon as you walk in, you understand that your food is going to be made with the same love, care and attention to detail that was brought to the design of the restaurant. The bar, the walls, everything. And the food! Of course, all the standard sushi/sashimi hits but they are unique in both their menu offerings and presentation. Three things worth mentioning are the Toro Rosa Roll, which might just be the single best roll I ever had in 40 years of eating sushi. The Albertson roll (making Roslyn jealous) was a head-spinning combination of sweet and spicy and did not look like any mango roll I had ever been served. Lastly, they have Sea Eel - Anago - which is frequently ON sushi menus but RARELY available. Michelle, our waiter, said "We always have Anago." And the service! Michelle M and Katrina took care of us in a way that felt exemplary-- like we were VIPs at the French Laundry or NOBU. There was never an empty sake or water cup; dirty plate, missing chopstick, thought, need or even imaginary concern that was not immediately satisfied by the Umami team. My party had eaten out five days in a row and this was by far the best service we had had at any restaurant, anywhere on the Island, at any cuisine, and at any price point. I am eager to go back and try everything on the menu I recommend Umami highly! Just don't take my reservation. And probably don't park near ONLLY nails, because their sign has a typo. read more

Maybe I have been spoiled by our recent trip to Japan because while the meal was enjoyable, I couldn't help but compare this omakase with Sushi Shin. Thus the 4 stars (although would probably be 4.5 if Yelp allowed 1/2 stars). This is not to say that it was not very good. To the contrary, I really enjoyed most of the dishes. However, the butter ponzu sauce that accompanied the rock shrimp is a little too oily and tasteless; I wound up dipping in soy sauce. The miso soup seems a little out of place. Maybe they are trying to use as pallet cleanser before sushi? It seemed a little off. And the hamachi jalapeño could use a little more flavor in the sauce. However, there were many positives! The sushi pieces were very luxurious; toro, salmon belly, white salmon, ikura! So rich! Really liked the salmon avocado and the crispy rice dishes! First time here, we went with the super deluxe sushi, sushi sashimi combo - usually the best barometer for a new sushi place, and the sashimi deluxe. All 3 were fresh and no "white tuna" was served = this is a legitimate sushi sashimi restaurant, not an AYCE sushi buffet. We were still a touch hungry after the 3 entrees and asked for another sushi sashimi combo when the server recommended the "house special sashimi" of nine really attractive, Omakase-ish looking dishes served in a wooden box ($68). No rice included tho', $3 a la carte - all good. Everything tasted proportional to their appearances, which is to say, very yummy . My advice, stick with the sushi sashimi combo, good value to quality quotient. If you go with the "house" options, they are NYC+ priced. The server also recommended the $150/per person Omakase. Maybe we'll try that next time on splurge night. Verdict: approximately $280 with tax, tip, no drinks whatsoever, 3 people, a touch past fair, but acceptable 2025 pricing for what was served. I saw the five-star reviews, and like a crab in the Long Island Sound took the bait. Umami is like yo mommy's food, but not as good. It's okay in a way. Not the best, not the worst. Certainly doesn't tie for first. This take-out meal? Not the real deal. I ordered a sliced teriyaki steak (prime rib) ($45), sushi and sashimi combo ($38), a volcano roll ($20), and a chicken sautéed udon ($20). So-so, yo! Tasting the food was akin to a Linda Perry song, what's going on in that kitchen? I ordered the steak medium-well, but it was prepared medium, with a few slices prepared medium rare RED. For $45 I shouldn't have to cook it again to my liking. The chicken was a bit hard and overcooked in the udon dish. Slightly underwhelming. The sushi and sashimi were okay, but the taste was on par with nearby Sushi Republic in New Hyde Park, which offers a 20% discount for take-out. Tasting good, as it should! To their credit, the miso soup was very good, tasting the way miso should. The teriyaki sauce was apropos, which added some good flavor, yo! I really want to love Uma Sushi in Roslyn -- it's a nice option for Long Island and has potential -- but after multiple disappointing experiences, I just can't justify coming back. Too many times my orders have been wrong, and the takeout quality has been far from ideal, especially at this price point. What's worse is that when mistakes happen (like forgetting a roll), they don't make any effort to fix the situation -- instead asking you to come back for it. For the cost, I expect better service and attention to detail. Today was the last straw: I ordered a tart for takeout, and what I got was literally bite-sized. Paying $25 for something that small is unacceptable. Unfortunately, despite wanting to support them, I'll be spending my money elsewhere. *More like 3.5 stars* First off, the restaurant has an elegant decor that also offers secluded tables in semi-private rooms which I thought was great. The sushi bar was an 8 seater (I think?) with 5 sushi chefs. The restaurant busy on a Saturday night which is always good to see. Plenty of parking in the lot. I was very hopeful for a delightful experience. We got the $150 omakase, which was prepared beautifully, and a large bottle of sake to accompany our meal. Just noting that the omakase just nigiri. It's basically different dishes offered by the restaurant. 1. Toro Uni Toast and cavier - 2 large pieces and was delicious. 2. 3 kumamoto oysters prepared 3 different ways - could not taste the difference between the 3 sauces. Oysters were fresh and accompanied with salmon roe. 3. Kampachi jalepeno - amberjack was good and, in this case, the chili hot oil worked with this fish. 4. Madai sashimi salad - not a typical salad, more like 3 bite size pieces. This was just okay. 5. Lobster tempura - this was very tasty but pieces of lobster were small. Very tender with a nice sauce on top. 6. Miso black cod - note quite like Nobu but was tasty. I wish this was a little larger. 7. Chawanmushi - very warm and comforting. Inside had mushrooms and a large shrimp. Nice touch to the meal. 8. 5 pcs premium sushi - high quality fish but did not like the hot chili oil. 9. Spicy scallop hand roll - not your typical hand roll and was small. Again, had hot chili oil and was way too much, totally ruined it. 10. dessert - was a sadly tiny matcha cake slice. Overall, it was a good meal and experience. Some things to consider. 1. Service was attentive but they did tip over my partially filled sake glass on the table and they never wiped it down or apologized. 2. The use of chili oil was too frequent and overpowering. I could do without it as it ruined some of the dishes. 3. While there were 5 sushi chefs, there was no interaction. This may be a bit odd especially when you order omakase and sit at the sushi bar. They were too busy fulfilling other orders that will took away from the experience. For the omakase, you're probably better off just sitting at a normal table as there's no benefit of sitting at the bar. It's actually probably worse. 4. While we didn't order any rolls, I did notice that they use several small pieces fish instead of a single piece. Just thought that was interesting as single pieces are used for sashimi and tend to be the best part of the fish. read more
