My friends and I had a wonderful evening at Umami Sushi and Grill. Umami Sushi and Grill is located on Willis Ave in Albertson, NY. There is a parking lot, but I had to wait for a car to leave to get a spot. I had made a reservation for 6 people at 7:00pm earlier in the week. My friends were running late, but I was seated in the meantime. Umami Sushi and Grill is modern, stylish, and spacious. We were seated in a private nook like an open bird cage and it allowed for a private and intimate dining experience. It was all of ours first time here and can't wait to go back. We started with the Mushroom Salad and Rock Shrimp Tempura Bites for appetizers. The mushroom salad had sautéed seasonal mushrooms with yuzu dressing. The rock shrimp was battered and lightly fried served with yuzu creamy spicy aioli sauce. The mushroom salad was refreshing and the rock shrimp flavor was great. We also ordered a bottle of Mio sparkling sake. I've always enjoyed this sake so I had to order it when I saw it on the menu. It is light, fruity, and slightly sweet. I ordered the Shaggy Dog Roll which had shrimp tempura inside, topped with crab meat, crunch, spicy mayo, and eel sauce. Very yummy and savored every bite. For dessert, I had the matcha cheesecake and I enjoyed it very much. The matcha cheesecake was packed with matcha flavor and it was creamy and luscious. The portion was smaller than the fried cheesecake and the fried ice cream that my friends got, but that was totally okay since the matcha cheesecake was so rich. Umami Sushi and Grill was the perfect place for my friends and I to catch up. Service was wonderful and we stayed at the restaurant for about 3 hours. The staff were attentive and still filled our water/hot tea. Definitely worth checking out.

Fresh food, great service, good ambiance all at a slightly higher price point. Umami Sushi and Grill is a great restaurant for Japanese food in general. Taste: 4.5/5 Ambiance: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Value for money: 4/5 We had: 1) Crispy Rice: Good! Done right. 2) Miso Soup: not bad 3) Sushi deluxe: Not a bad choice 4) Toro Scallion Handroll: 5/5 would recommend. 5) Umami Roll: interesting mix, this is a combination of snow crab and tuna 6) chirashi: not bad! The pickled carrot was interesting

I've been to this location as its previous iteration several years ago. My friends said that the food is excellent, so five of us went to Umami and had a very nice meal. Our servers were friendly enough, but the overall vibe is a little less friendly. They definitely wanted to get us out of there to potentially turn over the table (even though there wasn't a wait to get in). That said, the sushi was very fresh and delicious. I am admittedly a little spoiled by a place that I go to near home that has extraordinarily good prices and unbelievably high-quality sushi. Prices are a little high, but everything is expensive now.

We used to love Umami but they are decaying quickly. I give them about another 6 months. We picked up our meal tonight. I was waiting for it. Everything was cold. Fish was mushy and sushi rice disgusting ! This is our last visit ! I have pronounced time of death !! Save yourself and drive a few minutes extra to a place that serves good food and appreciates your business.

Wow!! This place is amazing. The food is so fresh, the staff are friendly and the decor/atmosphere is so chic. I went for lunch with no reservation on a Saturday and was seated right away. We got the rock shrimp, so yummy! We also got the chicken fried rice, lollipop roll and Albertson roll. Everything was so delicious, rich in flavor and fresh. I will definitely be back!!

If you want some good quality sushi in Long Island. come here! It's in a great location where it isn't deep in Long Island and not far from Queens. There's also a parking lot with plenty of spaces to park in. The inside is spacious and well decorated, love the indoor ambiance. I came for dinner with several friends to celebrate a few birthdays in my friend group. There were 12 of us so we made a reservation and they placed us in a back room that ended up only being our group (although there were other tables inside so if it was really busy, I'm sure they would've been filled). The staff was friendly and accommodating with our large group. We ordered a bunch of apps, sushi rolls, and udon to share amongst us and everything was delicious. I would recommend anything on the menu. There truly wasn't a bad bite and the quality of the fish is really top tier. The rolls are also packed unlike some places which might put more rice. This is now one of my favorite Japanese restaurants, especially if I'm craving sushi so you know I'll be back!

The outside is very deceiving. Someone had recommended but I was a little nervous, but can't judge a book by its cover. The inside is giving a zen vibe with every table feeling like its own little section. It's definitely on the pricier side, but the fish is very fresh. We went for lunch, we each got the 3 roll special. Each piece had a lot of fish. We also got the gyoza, they weren't the best I've ever had but it had the crispy pan skirt which I enjoyed. The lunch option came with soup or salad. We got one of each. The miso soup very much lived up to the umami name. The salad didn't have the typical carroty ginger dressing it was more like a sesame oil dressing and the salad was vibrant. I don't know if I would go out of my way but when I'm in the area, it would be my go to place!

Used to be Sakaya and now under new management but still a Japanese & bar restaurant. Got takeout from here for my son's birthday- salmon crispy rice, kumamoto oysters, soft shell crab, toro (fatty tuna) & uni (sea urchin) sushi, eel cucumber & California roll and a vegetable udon noodle soup. Server Irene was very friendly, helpful and accommodating. Not to mention, the restaurant itself is beautifully decorated with a perfect blend of traditional & modern Japanese aesthetics -feels like you're in Japan. As for the food, the apps were okay- oysters were tiny, crispy rice was not crispy (we didn't like the spicy salmon- must be the sauce) and soft shell crab didn't taste fresh- soggy with pieces of beets underneath. The best things were probably the toro & uni sushi- for $13+ a pc, it better be good right? The sushi rolls were really small & fell apart easily and the udon was nothing special- broth was salty. Overall, definitely not worth the price but I would get the sushi again (only for special occasions) :$

    proof of our reservations

Made a reservation just 2 hrs prior on a rainy Memorial Day weekend with plenty of availability, yet we were greeted with cold, rude behavior the second we walked in. The host repeatedly questioned our reservation, gave unnecessary attitude over us being 10 minutes late, and acted as though we didn't belong there. Come to find out, the same host -- Ms. Lucy was the manager. Ms. Lucy, you are Asian, a minority just like us. Please do better. We watched you greet and seat other guests politely, yet our experience felt completely different. We all bleed the same. In the hospitality business, kindness & respect should be given to everyone, and your behavior was disgracefully unprofessional.

First time trying this place. It's a really clean restaurant with pretty decor. The waitresses were friendly and service was quick for a Saturday night. There were five of us so we ordered a lot of food. The chicken skewers and chicken udon noodles were my favorite. I loved the mushrooms in them. The drinks could've been better. The sushi was okay but the spicy mayo made it so much better.

I went here for dinner with friends on a Wednesday night. It's a new restaurant in Albertson and shares a parking lot with a shopping center. The restaurant is beautifully designed and has some really cool dining areas, one pictured below. The waiter we had overall was really knowledable and very patient. I just did not like that I felt like he was trying to make us leave at the end of our meal. He didn't even offer us dessert. The hot green tea was flowing and they don't charge for refills, which was nice. We ordered rock shrimp tempura and miso cod lettuce wrap for appetizers. Both were really good. The cod was nice and buttery. I highly recommend them both. I ordered the shashimi combo that came with a soft shell crab roll and my friend got the sushi and shashimi combo. My other friend ordered 2 rolls. One soft shell crab roll and one shaggy dog roll. The combo platters came with miso soup, which was so salty, we couldn't finish it. I had maybe two spoonfuls. The sushi wasn't great. The softshell crab didn't taste fresh at all. I enjoyed my shashimi but it wasn't the best I ever had. Hardly any variety, mostly salmon. My friend liked her sushi and sashimi combo and my mother friend's shaggy dog roll was good. We all tried it and liked it. She felt the same way that I did about the soft shell crab roll. Likely, I won't come back here but if I have the opportunity, I would try something different than the main course that I had.

awesome place for a nice dinner on long island! went here with a group of 10 for my mom's birthday. plenty of food options for people that don't eat raw fish too!

A piece of staples come inside the soft shell crab

We are returning customer but not anymore. I am dining in this restaurant 10 minutes ago. When eating this appetizer something hurt my mouth. After splitting out, there is a piece of staples in the crab poked my mouth, not sure if I swallowed other half piece. I informed 1st waitress, she immediately removed my plate, NO APOLOGY as if that's normal thing. Then came 2nd waitress placed 2 clean plates, said NOTHING too. I asked her "you know what happened?" She said "I know I know" then left, no apologies. 2 mins later I asked the 1st waitress, "so it's ok for you when I chewed a piece of metal in the food, you just need to remove my plate? No apologies?" Her response, "I am too busy" So it's ok for customers to chew, swallow staples coming from their food, no need apologies especially when they are TOO BUSY. Funny thing is, when we requested bill & cancel all upcoming entrees, 2nd waitress played dumb, asked what happened? Mgr came insisted everything on house, we insisted to leave and demand for bill. At the end we left, leave $70 cash on table without a bill. It isn't about money, we went there for food & customer svc.

The Toro Rosa Roll (Seared toro w mixed greens, fried shallots, gochujang miso sauce) that I have been dreaming about since I first had it.

This came with rice, salad, 4 pcs California roll. 3. Clam kalguksu (hand pulled noodles), savory broth with plenty of little clams still in shell. I've had better, but this wasn't bad either. All of the above came with miso soup and a variety of veggie banchans (radish, pickled jalapeños and water kimchi). Service was fine, the place was actually quite busy with take out and dine in. However, this will be my absolute last time at Kotobuki in Roslyn, as someone who's been countless times. We came hungry and ordered relatively quickly. We waited at least 30 minutes for our Kani salad which was surprising, since it's in most of their dishes. Unfortunately, it was inedible. The only thing I can compare it to texture-wise is the crinkle paper they put in gift bags. We sent it back and had to wait again to get a menu and reorder. We were surprised there was not a care from the waiters to make it right. They also mentioned that everyone had been complaining about the Kani and did nothing about it. Our sushi took an hour to come out, and my friend rolls were incorrect. She mentioned it to the waiter and got her food taken back to correct it. When she got her new, correct order from our waiter, not only was the order still wrong, the plate was super dirty and a hair was on her plate. At this point, with the lack of service, attention, and inedible food we called over the manager who apologized and offered to make the new rolls himself. He did it quick, and though it was a nice gesture, at this point we were so put off from the hair we couldn't finish our meals and were ready to leave. They comped the Kani salads (which we sent back) but to our surprise nothing else was taken care of. I wasn't expecting a $0 bill, but to pay over $50 for a pretty horrific meal and experience also rubbed me the wrong way. Do yourself a favor and support other Japanese restaurants that have the fish quality, affordability, and attention to customers that Kotobuki lacks with their new turnover in management.

The fish tasted fresh, the presentation was on point, and every roll and dish came out flavorful and well-prepared. Portions were just right--not too small where you feel unsatisfied, and not overly large either, so you can try a good variety without feeling overwhelmed. No long waits between rounds either, which is always a huge plus for AYCE. We also ordered sake, and it was the perfect match--really complemented the flavors of the sushi and elevated the whole dining experience. What really stood out was how consistent the quality was across the board--whether it was classic rolls, specialty items, or hot dishes. Everything felt thoughtfully prepared, not rushed like some AYCE spots can be. Overall, a great experience: delicious food, a comfortable atmosphere, attentive service, and that added bonus of a private dining space.
