The world food tour duo reconvened at Koko Head Café in Kaimuki. I learned that this popular breakfast / brunch venue is now open for dinner, so I checked the menu, then made a reservation. We hadn't been in this restaurant since it was it was the 12th Avenue Grill ... The décor looked like it hadn't changed, we were seated at a table across from the bar, which was nice as it was quieter than the tables near the windows. We perused the menu and I ordered a 2023 Non Confunditur, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sangiovese from Toscana ($70). It was rich, full of dark fruit, and chocolate ... A surprisingly good wine available in stores for about $25. We opted for the Ulu Fried Feta ($24) and Mothers Mushrooms ($24) as appetizers and Mapo Tagliatelle ($36), Lamb Rendang ($44), and Garlic Rice Skillet ($10) for our entrée. Each appetizer was petite, colorful and flavorful, especially the ulu. It was topped with herb salad, slices of cucumber, candied pistachios and surrounded by a balsamic glaze and pieces of Ka'u orange. Slices of mushrooms were atop smoked goat cheese, topped by a frisee herb salad, kataifi and a soy vinaigrette. We wondered what the Mapo Tagliatelle would look like ... Imagine Mapo tofu with minced pork over Onda tagliatelle pasta, topped with fried shallots and cilantro. It was spicy with a good amount of heat; surprisingly good over pasta. I scooped spoonfuls of Mapo tofu atop the garlic rice. The rice was wonderful, crisped on the bottom and topped with a generous heaping of green onion and what looked like toasted millet. The lamb was so tender and so rich in flavor. It was served with pieces of fried ulu flatbread and came with three dishes of pickles, string bean, daikon, and pineapple (we think). I would have preferred naan bread with the lamb. The ulu flatbread was delicious, but it made a precarious platform for the lamb as it was very crispy. We had lots of leftovers but one must order dessert. We opted for the Bottom of the Bowl ($8). It was a scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with fried cornflakes and salted caramel. I cannot eat ice cream, but I took a spoonful ... Yum! I had an Americano ($4.50) as they didn't have coffee. It was too light for my taste; give me real coffee every time. We enjoyed our time at Koko Head Café ... It was nice to see that it was pretty full when we left. The dinner menu is not large, but we were able to find dishes that appealed to us. There was a 5% Kitchen Service Charge added to the bill. I didn't notice it; I might have reduced the tip amount I left. ... Rating: 4.
I'm a fan of Top Chef, and I was excited to try Lee Ann Wong's Koko Head Cafe for brunch. Our group went after hiking Diamond Head, so we came hungry. We didn't have a reservation, but they luckily had space and were able to seat us. The interior is bright and airy, with local decor. The service was amazing, the service in Hawai'i had been consistently friendly, but it was particularly good at the cafe. We tried a variety of brunch cocktails, all were well made. My friend also started with their rotating biscuit, she got the last vanilla biscuit of the day. It was amazing on its own, but it also came with an amazing butter and mixed fruit jam. I already knew I wanted their take on the loco moco, and decided to split this and the volcano eggs with a friend. Each came in a hot skillet, the volcano eggs reminded me of a Shakshuka. We did a mix of the veggies and sausage. The ingredients were perfectly paired in the right proportions. While it was a great dish, it was the loco moco that will continued to be talked about. The crispy rice, the flavor of the gravy, the right about of spice. It was perfect. Do not miss bunch here if you are on the island, and consider making reservations.
Excellent brunch spot with a bit of wait. Highly recommend reservations and be prepared for some parking adventures. Our first time at Koko Head Cafe and was completely satisfied. The quoted wait time for a table during our visit was 45 minutes, however we're fortunate enough to secure a last minute availability at the bar. The space reminds me of a diner with bench seating areas. Their menu looked promising and we immediately decided on our entrees. My husband ordered the steak and eggs and I opted for the Koko Moco. The Koko Moco was served in a hot skillet. The crispy rice with the gravy was wonderful! The beef patty was perfectly cooked and topped with a sunny side egg. I tried my husband's steak and eggs which was also delicious. The Australian Wagyu steak was cooked medium rare, topped with hollandaise sauce, and served with a side of hash brown and rice. Drinks were also noteworthy. The queens mimosa was delightful. A perfect blend of sparkling wine, elderflower, and guava juice. Pricing was on the higher end however worth it. Service was excellent and I wouldn't hesitate to return to try other items from their menu.
Came on a Saturday and pretty crowded as expected. Was able to get seated outside which we didn't mind until we realized it was going to rain and we would hear the chickens through out our entire meal. The outdoor area seemed very nicely set up with the turf and string lights but unfortunately it's right next to where all the cars enter and there's multiple chickens that walk around while one of roosters continued to keep screaming so loud. We got an order of POG which was pretty pricey and just tasted like the grocery store meadow gold POG juice. The cornflake French toast had a crispy outer part but became soggy really quickly from the sweet sauce on the bottom and we honestly couldn't even finish it. The koko moco was decent, the tempura kimchee was unique and tasty. The crispy rice from the skillet was a nice add to the tender loco moco. The patty was pretty small so the amount of meat isn't a lot and the gravy is pretty standard. Will definitely wait to sit inside next time.
We were nearby & on a whim, decided to pop in. My expectations were high due to being an avid brunch maker & the rave reviews. There was no wait for an outdoor table without reservations. Service: 3.5* Friendly, prompt & helpful with the menu. Food: $21 Ricotta Pancakes: 2.5* When they arrived, I was shocked to see them stacked because when I make lemon ricotta pancakes, they are light & airy & would not deflate them by stacking. These were heavy & dense. Not much flavor in the pancakes so a topping is a must. Nothing special. $26 Cornflake French Toast: 3* The French toast appeared to be deep fried. I tried a bite, it tasted good & had a crunchy exterior. Unfortunately the person who ordered the Cornflake French Toast does not care for black pepper, the server said the billionaire's bacon could be replaced with strawberries. Considering the regular (not billionaire's) bacon side is $6, expected a bunch of strawberries...Well, there was only 1 sliced strawberry. The server offered to replace the creamy black pepper maple with haupia syrup. When the bill arrived, there was a charge for the replacement. Overall was not impressed.
Really love this cafe for its amazing vibes and yummy food! I got their ricotta pancake with Hawaiian compote and it was delicious. It was soft and somewhat fluffy, and the Hawaiian compote is very tropical. I would have probably wanted some type of syrup or cream to make it more flavorful. The staff were very friendly and attentive. Although walk in is available, I would recommend making a reservation since it gets so busy. They even have an outdoor space as well. I'll definitely try to come back!
We've always loved Koko Head Cafe for brunch, but their new dinner service completely won us over. After celebrating my dad's birthday here recently, we knew it would be the perfect Valentine's spot -- and it absolutely was. Executive Chef Lee Anne Wong truly runs something special at Koko Head Cafe. You can taste the intention in every dish -- layered, bold, and thoughtfully executed. If the dumplings are available, they're a must. Non-negotiable. Brunch here is homey and bustling, but dinner shifts into this warm, cozy vibe that feels intimate yet still spacious. (And yes -- the AC is freezing cold, so bring a layer .) Cocktails are just as impressive as the food -- beautiful presentation, bold flavor, perfectly balanced. Service is genuinely local and hospitable, the kind that makes you feel taken care of without being overbearing. Make a reservation -- dinner fills up quickly and you don't want to miss out. A true must-go in Honolulu.
The presentation is beautiful and the service is genuinely friendly. Overall, the experience is enjoyable, but for the price, the flavors fall short. They serve one of the better loco mocos I've had, and I appreciated their take on Korean bibimbap, but nothing extraordinary. We ordered the steak and eggs, which tasted great thanks to the sauce and crispy hash brown, but the portion was so small for a $40 dish. The Volcano Eggs themselves didn't really do it for me. All I tasted was basic tomato sauce, and the okra made the texture a little too slimy. I was SOOO disappointed by the French toast. I was really looking forward to it, but it just tasted like old oil. To make things worse, all of the bacon came out cold, like it had just been pulled from the fridge. If it wasn't for the boozy morning milkshake, I would have been more disappointed.
Been a while since we our last visit - first time back since they moved locations. Our server, JT, was great in that he offered recommendations and checked on us often. During our recent visit, it took about 40 minutes for our orders to arrive. JT was apologetic about the wait. The vanilla biscuit arrived warm and still as good as I remembered it. Hubs went with one of the special omelets (forgot the name) which came with a good sized salad - tasty. I went with the Natty Skillet. Although each component (the fried poke, eggs, crispy rice, ong choy) was ok, for me, there was something missing about this dish as a whole that left me unsatisfied. Usually, I'm a big fan of all their offerings so this was a first for me.
Post surf brunch was yummy. We got the bibimbap and koko moco. Our server did a great job of offering the chef's recommendation cooking like "sunny side up egg" and "medium rare beef". The skillet kept our meal hot the entire time we were seated. And I'm a huge fan of the crispy rice! This was my first time at the new location (I know I know it's been like 5 years now) and it's SO CUTE! Lots of pretty art to view along the walls and little plants and terrariums throughout. We were sat at a booth section which is my preference in any dining venue, and I didn't even ask! Huge points for that.

Definitely in the top 1 or 2 spots for breakfast in Honolulu. Everything about Koko Head Cafe says quality. This is high end cooking technique applied to decidedly local fare. Service is exemplary and the restaurant's expanded footprint makes for a comfortable and welcoming place yo enjoy breakfast, brunch or lunch. Not to be missed....the house-made vanilla biscuit with honey butter and jam of the day. The Miso pork omelette is like a Japanese/Hawaiian match made in heaven! You can join the wait list...and on the weekends...there is going to be a wait...or just come super early like my dining-partner-in-crime and I did. About a 2-2.5: Koko Head Cafe has been around since '14, and they seem to be a popular brunch spot - They describe themselves as an 'Island Style Brunch House', and their menu is pretty extensive, with daily specials that include baked goods and food specials. We ordered: +a Cinnamon Roll - which seemed to have some lilikoi filling and a very thick and creamy cream cheese icing; the roll itself wasn't dried out, but actually warm and slightly fluffy; definitely a decadent treat +a Koko Moco - a beef patty with a mushroom gravy, a sunny-side up egg, tempura kimchi, and set upon a crispy garlic rice; unfortunately, it seemed as if whoever was preparing or seasoning the patty was very heavy-handed with the sea salt, as you could literally taste rocks of salt on it, making it extremely salty; the gravy itself was savory, but we didn't find any mushrooms in it; the egg was runny, and the tempura kimchi was interesting (just wish there were more pieces); the 'crispy' garlic rice didn't have much garlic flavor, and while some parts were a little crispy, it was overall soggy and saturated with the oil/grease +a latte with almond milk +POG (passion fruit, orange, and guava) - refreshing, but costing $6 for a small glass was a bit too much Service was kind and friendly, and the interior is actually spacious. DELCIOUS. Cornflake French toast is bomb. They also have a dish called Ohayou Eggs, try it if you want to try something different that'll change the way you want breakfast back home! They also make dumplings, but they run out early. They also have an award-winning chef! There is a wait so get there early. Totally worth the wait! read more
Impeccable service even though they were serving a private large party. Koko moco - tempura battered Kim chee paired with a beef patty sitting under a sunny egg is the way to go. The gravy is hearty and its filling. Miso fish and eggs - I understand not everyone likes their veggies but your home girl will mop these. Corn cake French toast - thick slabs of French toast sitting pretty & parallel to each other. It's in a lovely pool of condensed milk, spices, and buttery goodness. On top is frosted flake gelato from next door. It was a delicious, divine, sophisticated looking French toast. The ginger drink was very gingery. I remember thinking Koko Head Cafe was SO overhyped when I first visited their old location back in 2020. Fast forward to 2023, I now think it's one of my favorite brunch spots on Oahu. They moved to the old 12th Ave Grill location in Kaimuki which is much more spacious and brighter than the previous location. We put our name on the waitlist right before leaving the house, and got a notification that the table was ready before we parked. We were seated inside and our server Juan promptly introduced himself and asked if we had any questions about the menu. We got crackin' with our questions (cause we had a lot LOL) and we got our orders placed. Here's what we got: Breakfast Bruschetta - two petite rusks with a honey mac nut yogurt, a variety of fruits and lime zest. It was the perfect balance of sweet and citrusy and I absolutely loved it Kimchi Cheddar Bacon Scone - one of the best scones i've ever had. ever. there was so much falvor to it and Koko Moco - So much flavor and despite the small looking size, it was actually quite hefty Cornflake French Toast - One of my go-to's, I love how fluffy the inside is while the outside is perfectly crispy. A little on the sweet side but still delicious especially when you share it with someone as a side dish Mega Hashbrown Ohayou Style - hughughhhh the BEST hash browns I've ever had. So many buttery layers of thin potato covered in a creamy, luscious sauce and topped with a runny egg Our server Juan was so sweet and extremely amazing - he knew everything about the menu, gave the best recommendations and really made our visit spectacular. read more
I've been here before and think it is worthy of repeat visits. The staff was very friendly and had no problem doing separate checks. Today I tried the vanilla biscuit with housemade jam, which was great. I was also happy with the strawberry guava lemonade. They have a good selection of both cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks. First time visiting this establishment and it didn't disappoint!!! We will definitely be returning again! I had the fresh catch of the day with sautéed vegetables, French Eggs, and crispy rice, my husband had a Koko Moco with Fried Rice & Gravy, and Large House Salad. I cannot think of enough positive words that can describe these delicious plates. This catch of the day was Mahi Mahi and it was cooked to perfection. The Koko Moco was on point and the gravy had the right consistency. I had never had crispy rice but I was surprised how delicious it was! The service is beyond amazing!! For ambiance Koko Head cafe is nice and bright with high ceilings which make it feel very open and lot of space inside. Aesthetically the dishes look great and the service is very like and punctual. Unfortunately I feel like the food sometimes sounds or looks better than it tastes for the price point. The triple garlic noodles sounded unique but the noodle quality tasted like packet instant ramen, the garlic taste was prevalent but I wouldn't be able to tell you the three ways it was used, and as a whole became quickly gummy and a giant glob of noodles so it was hard to pull or get actual bites. For the price point though it was kind of insane so I think there's other breakfast spots that highlight the greatness of Kaimuki read more
When you are lucky enough that work takes to Hawaii, and you have been dying to come here. It did not disappoint!!! We came later than planned so we missed the dumpling. The service was amazing and the food off the hook. We had the corn flake French toast and the Chicky eggs. We were members of the clean plate club. The sizes were huge. read more

I absolutely love this place. Everything about it is chefs kiss. All the food items is curated to perfection. I haven't tried a dish I didn't like. For example, I'm not a potatoes person but the hash browns are ADDICTING. I don't know how they make it but it's perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. It's not over seasoned either. I feel like my description is not doing the hash brown justice so you'll just have to order one yourself. The volcano eggs is their spin on shakshouka and it's spectacular! You have the option to add on Portuguese sausage and/or veggies. I have had both and I prefer the veggie volcano eggs with the meat on the side. The reason being is that if you get the Portuguese sausage in the skillet, the excess oil from the sausage becomes overpowering (in my opinion). This is also my favorite dish on the menu. The bibimbaps presentation is great but the taste is even better. It looks intimidating just because there's a lot of elements to the dish but trust me, it's so good. I don't have pictures of the poke omelette but that's also a crowd favorite. You gotta get it w the garlic rice. So incredibly good. In terms of service, the service is amazing and food comes out so fast. The only downside is that it is so crowded, so make sure you call ahead for reservations or just sit at the bar. Parking - there's a parking lot but you gotta pay for it. Otherwise you can find street parking. I highly recommend this place. It's my favorite place to take any of my visitors. read more

We looked for a place to eat in the Kaimukī area, and came across Chef Leeanne Wong's Koko Head Cafe. Great choice! This location used to be a Columbia Inn up until 2014 (or so) ... went there a few times with my grandparents for dinner, then a couple of times in the 90s with friends. It's amazing how this place was transformed into the Koko Head Cafe. The food we had was excellent, and so was the service! Definitely will go back to try some of the other dishes on the menu. read more
TL;DR Poke Omelette = ONO Ohayou Eggs = ONO The Best Hash Brown Ever = ONO ----- I'd say the greatest draw at Koko Head Cafe is the unique, Asian-influenced menu. Most of the items here cannot be found anywhere else. The wait on the weekends is notoriously long. I'd say the average wait time is probably about an hour. However, the waitlist feature is very helpful. And if you're open to eating outside, the queue will move even quicker. I've been twice to Koko Head Cafe now and enjoyed both my brunches. The first visit, I tried the Ohayou Eggs (an umami-packed skillet entree), and the second visit, I tried the Poke Omelette (breaded and fried poke inside a French-style omelette, topped with aioli). Both were very delicious and incredibly unique. I'd also recommend ordering the hash brown ("The Best Hash Brown Ever" per their menu). Is it the best of all time? That's hard to say. But it's damn good, that's for sure. read more
I want to start off by saying that this review is not geared towards the employees who were very kind and welcome to our party the whole way through. This review is based solely on the food. Iced Cafe Latte: Just ok. Skip this and go to a local cafe before you head here. I did see they have a lot of brunch cocktails so that's what you're looking for, it may be good. Breakfast Congee: Congee with...croutons..and bacon? Interesting but it ended there. The croutons were sweet. It just wasn't my thing. Chicky and Eggs: the serving size of this skillet was smaller than my mom's hand and she's only 5'0 ft tall. $25 for this. My favorite part was the crunchy rice but the rest of the dish had no flavor. Dumplings: 4 dumplings for $16. They weren't made of gold and they certainly didn't look like it so I'm not sure why it was that pricey. The sauce and the filling were not my favorite. Koko Moco: the only redeeming dish of the entire lineup. It came in the same size skillet as the chicky and eggs though so it was small. $25. There are far better cafes on Oahu with more flavor and half the price, I would skip this one. read more

I can't believe I've waited such a long time to try this place. I am very glad I finally went! There was a bit of a wait to get a table. They have a waitlist on Yelp that I didn't know about and would suggest getting on the waitlist prior to arrival. The restaurant is very nicely decorated and there is a comfortable amount of space between tables. The servers are very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu and gave us their suggestions upon request. I love that this place sources everything local. I ordered the breakfast bimbimbap which came in a hot cast iron skillet. This was a delicious dish! The rice was crunchy, the mushrooms were soft, there was a generous amount of meat, and the whole plate was flavorful. The Don Buri Chen was also very flavorful. The house pickles were a nice touch to all the pork in the dish. The French scrambled eggs had a great texture and airiness. I would definitely come back and try other dishes. read more

A great place for a brunch with unique flavors done just right. We came on a Saturday morning around 9 and forgot to sign in ahead of time. Just a 20 minute wait so no problem. There's a large waiting area with seats. Everything was great! The best bite I have had in a long while was the mango bruschetta- the honey nut butter topped with sweet juicy mangos and finished with a touch of lime zest So so good! Half of the tables seemed to have ordered this. I can see why. Another standout was the miso pork in the don buri Chen. One of the best ways of roasting pork that I've tried. read more

We loved Koko head cafe! I had heard about it for a while and was excited to try it with my husband and fur baby after a weekend sunrise hike. First off, we love that they are dog friendly. They were so welcoming and sweet to our chocolate lab, who loves tagging along on adventures. The service was quick and friendly and our waitress made great recommendations. We started with the homemade vanilla biscuit (sounds simple but it was fantastic) and the dumpling of the day (a must try). Then we split the volcano skillet and French toast. Both were super flavorful and delicious, but in my opinion the French toast is tough to beat. We ended up taking home a scone and slice of basque cheesecake to enjoy later for dessert, and it did not disappoint. We will definitely be returning for more. read more

First time at this location. Metered PARKING or paid lot. Came for holiday Brunch with my BFF December 5. The restaurant was filled with festive holiday decorations. Our server was wonderful and made some great suggestions. We shared a French Omelette and Breakfast Bruschetta which were both delicious. They offer a full bar, private gathering space, breakfast & lunch. A definite must try! I'll be back soon. read more

Wow. I've been wanting to try Koko head cafe for so long and glad I finally did! I can see why the wait is long and reviews are excellent. We added our name to the waitlist and then headed over since it was about 20-40 min wait. You check in on the iPad when you walk in. They have indoor and outdoor seating but alcohol cannot be served outside so we opted to sit at the bar. The bartender was so friendly and prompt with service. Drinks were phenomenal! The bloody wasn't as thick as some I've had and I liked the subtle wasabi flavor. We decided to get the Easter special dumplings, breakfast bibimbap, and Don buri Chen. UNREAL. the flavors were robust and meshed together perfectly. I loved the hot chilis on the dumplings, tender pork inside, bouncy dough, and mouth watering feel. I was in love with everything. This was one of the places that I always pushed off going cause I lived in the area. I'm so happy I finally got a chance to visit this amazing restaurant. Knowing that this is a very popular breakfast/brunch place, I wanted to make a reservation, which was super easy on Yelp. As I checked in at the front, they were able to seat us right away. All the foods and drinks ordered were amazing and our server was very attentive and friendly. However, you do need to pay for parking in the Kaimuki shopping parking lot but for 2 hours, I believe it was around $3. Not bad at all since it was a meter parking! It was such a cute place and I can't wait to bring my boyfriend here read more

From our first visit in 2016 the menu has evolved incredibly.We fell in love with the food at their old location. It was a great surprise to find out they moved to a bigger location. Service was wonderful, all staff members were very attentive. All the items we ordered were devine. We will for sure make this a must every time we visit. read more
Recommend getting on the waitlist ahead of time on the weekends when it's most busy so you don't have to wait outside too long. I ended up getting the haupia ricotta pancakes and the volcano eggs which were both amazing! The pancakes were some of the best I've had on the island. By the time we got there around 12 they had already run out of there special dumplings so I recommend going early if you want to try the dumpling of the day. Also the street parking in the area is free on Sundays and holidays. read more
Came here on a Wednesday afternoon and joined the waitlist via yelp. Even though there wasn't a line, parking is really tricky inside the lot as there aren't too many spaces so I definitely recommend parking further away and walking. When we got seated, our waiter was extremely nice and even offered to add a candle to one of the dishes that we got to celebrate a birthday. Our group of 4 ended up ordering the Breakfast Bibimbap ($23), Volcano Eggs ($23), Cornflake French Toast ($25), and The Best Hash Brown Ever ($9). We all enjoyed every dish and were pleasantly surprised by how authentic the bibimbap tasted. The french toast also had the perfect sweetness and had a nice crispy exterior. I do think that the portions are very small compared to the price that you're paying. It wasn't a mind blowing brunch but I still enjoyed it. Overall, I would definitely give Koko Head Cafe a try, but be aware of how small/expensive the dishes may be. read more
This place came with a high recommendation. We showed up with a party of 10 and no reservation (they don't take reservations). The wait staff were super friendly and helpful and made space for us quickly. The menu has lots of Hawaiian specialties like a Poke omelet and cornflake French toast. The food was delicious. 10/10 would come back again. We went here for valentines brunch and it was our first time. DEFINITELY putting in our regular must see spot when we're in Hawaii. Our host and server were great. The building was nice and neat. It felt cozy. They kept checking on us and kept our drinks filled. The food was GREAT. Not only was the food and service good, but the server also helped us find some places to site see. Specifically cliff jumping and the places we did visit were awesome! I definitely recommend coming here any time you visit Honolulu. read more
Started off with a few drinks. Coffee, good but nothing special, house-made POG, which was a little bit on the tangy side, and matcha latte, which was excellent! I had the Koko moco, on garlic crispy rice and Kim chee tempura. It was very good but for the ingredients and size, not worth the $24. The meat, eggs and gravy were done right and tasty. I liked the Kim chee tempura, good twist on two traditional foods. The garlic rice was a nice touch. I also tried some of the corn flake French toast. This was also good but would prefer to have the syrup on the side. Having the French toast sit in a bed of syrup made it too sweet. The corn flakes added a unique texture and flavor to the toast. Service was very good; niice, pleasant and fast. The place tends to get loud and noisy when the servers do their shout outs. Other than that, typical coffee shop atmosphere. read more

I just saw the sign at their restaurant. They're moving to 1120 12th Ave. tried to scope it out, but only 12th Ave grill seems to be there still.

How is parking in this area?
There is a large paid parking lot in the center of Kaimuki about a block away and metered spaces within a block as well. Pretty decent parking depending on what time of day you go.
Do they take Reservations for Mother's Day Breakfast?
As far as I know they do not take reservations, easiest way is to send someone ahead to put name on list. They do sit quickly though even when busy. Normally no more than 20-30 min wait at it's busiest
