The chicken is VERY tender and is on a bed of cabbage. The spicy sauce it hot enough for a kick, but pleasing to eat with a smokier flavor. The coconut rice has a moderate cocnut flavor, but not overpowering! Sweet and cooked well. Macaroni salad is also very good. Okay Kokonut Grill was amazing. The food is considered Malaysian- based tropical Asian fusion. They have vegan and vegetarian options, but I wanted meat. I placed an order to-go and even though I waited an extra 8 minutes past the estimated time it would be ready, once I sat down and ate my food, I did not care at all. I ordered the KoKo Box, which was approximately $10, including tax. It had a large portion of protein (I chose crispy chicken) overtop shredded cabbage, 1 sauce (I chose spicy chili), and included 3 sides (macaroni salad with two scoops of rice--option to have coconut rice, white rice, or one scoop of both). The inside was clean but decorated. They even have a TV with the option to sing karaoke. It was a bit small, but there was still some seating. I placed my order to-go because I was studying at VCU's library. I took one bite and just kept going and going. The portions were generous and well worth the $10--it could definitely have been split into two meals. Every part of this meal was so good. The chicken was crispy but tender and juicy inside. I liked that they had the sauce in a to-go container on the side because some places smother their meats in sauce and it becomes soggy or the sauce runs into the other food. However, I ordered sweet chili and it was not spicy at all (it tasted very similar to Sweet & Sour sauce). Their macaroni salad is super good, especially because it is not overly creamy with not too much mayonnaise. Everything had the perfect flavor. This is a must try if you are in Richmond! I am Malaysian and I have to say that even though there aren't a lot of original Malaysian dishes on the menu (because it's a fusion restaurant), the dishes definitely have an authentic Malaysian flair. My favorites are the satay, the chicken in spicy garlic sauce and the coconut rice. If you've never tried Malaysian shaved ice (or ABC as it's called over there), then you have to try it. You can pick one protein with 1 sauce (unless you want to pay $3 extra for another protein). My protein of choice was grilled chicken with curry sauce, it was delicious :) especially on top of the cabbage. For the mini you can pick two sides so I picked coconut rice and macaroni salad. I liked the coconut rice, it was a good pairing with the protein I picked. The macaroni salad was just okay, I don't think it had much flavor unfortunately because it looked good. The mango bubble tea was fine but I'm not sure if it has any real mango or if it's more powder based because it didn't taste very natural. Came here for the first time on a Thursday so it wasn't too busy. I got the mini koko box and my bf got the loco moco. Everything was great! The sauce for the crispy chicken was really good. The coconut rice is really refreshing and the coconut taste is very faint. It is hard to get tropical/pacific food so this place is great if you have a craving for it. They also have shave ice and halo halo so it'll be a great place to go in the summer too. We didn't have to wait long for our food, and after we were done eating the owner came out to see if we liked the food. Very friendly staff and cute interior! One thing that has been consistent of the kokonut is the friendly and helpful customer service. Each time I've been in, your always greeted by someone smiling and friendly so I have to assume everyone there must get along and have fun which is transparent with those making the food here as well. Not your five star quality food, but if your looking for something consistently good, kokonut is your place. Really...the only thing that could ruin your meal here is the sauce you choose for your Katsu or if you are alittle impatient.... The price is fair for the quality and taste of food that you get and the customer experience is awesome. Only reason why it stayed at 3 stars is because whether you call in or order there, even when not busy it takes like a good 20-25mins for your food to be prepared and ready for you, which I personally feel is a pretty long time....I thought at first it may have been a string of unlucky beans but sorry to say, i just had to wait every time but the pleasant conversation and banter with staff kept me coming back....parking has never been too difficult either, you can typically find a parking spot alongside main st no matter the time of day, you may be a block or 2 away but it would be worth the little exercise though! Each time I've gone I have tried the majority of the sauces and I would stick to the teriyaki or the curry. Other ones taste alittle bland with the chicken in my opinion and I always get the rice and macaroni salad for the sides. I am originally from Hawaii and I was looking forward to this place when I found it, but I was a so disappointed. The Katsu chicken was a little chewy and not as crispy as local Hawaiian style. I came for the Blank Canvas fundraiser and got the Koko Mini box with chicken katsu, rice and macaroni salad. I also got a side of curry puffs which made my total $10~ which was reasonably priced for the good quality of the food. They also personally bring you your food whether you got take out or dine in. ...I am basing my knowledge of Hawaiian food from my experience in California and this place was just not hitting any spots. I ordered the fried chicken w/ katsu sauce on the side (chicken katsu in California) w/ macaroni salad and the spicy sesame salad. Tried this place today, with mixed results. I clearly didn't know what minced beef was (I was expected 'minced' to mean shredded, for some odd reason), and both of us would have ordered the chicken if we had realized that the beef was, essentially, chopped hamburger patties. The result (Beef Koko Box) was an excellent sauce and cabbage base, with trashy feeling/tasting pressed meat chunks (that weren't even worth finishing) sprinkled on top. Disappointing. The veggie rolls were rather flavorless, tiny and way overpriced. I think, size wise, they should sell for $1.50 to $2.00, tops. Flavor wise, they shouldn't be sold at all. This is not so uncommon with such thinly rolled vegetable/spring rolls- it's often hard to taste anything beyond the fried outer wrapper. The Sesame Balls, however, were a different story entirely. They were easily the highlight of the meal: slightly crispy on the outside, soft and sweet in the center (perfect texture combo) and possessing a superb flavor. I have never been a fan of sesame based desserts, but these may have started to change my opinion. The Coconut rice was good (standard), the macaroni salad was also good, in a standard, no frills way. The house slaw was excellent, and I wish that I had gotten three orders of just that. Can't think of the last time I enjoyed cabbage that much. Food is made to order, which is always welcome, and the people seemed friendly and professional, Atmosphere is cozy. Kokonut Grill was great! I popped in for lunch one day and was very satisfied. I got the half portion of chicken katsu with the macaroni salad and white rice. The owner was so nice that he added a scoop of coconut rice on the side so I could try it to see if I liked it. I'm so glad he did that because now I can say without a doubt that I am not a fan of coconut rice. Now that that's been established, we can get on to the rest of the meal. Phenomenal experience. This place is newly opened, and the owner is ecstatic about the place and very accommodating. I typically expect Asian restaurants to be dirty and smelly, but upon walking in I noticed a very clean interior and a flashy menu displaying their items. I ordered the crispy chicken with coconut rice, and it came out quickly and neatly. The food was great. Hot, solid portion, perfectly cooked chicken with a fantastic dipping sauce, and coconut rice that was sweet but not too sugary and very pleasant. Go for the coconut rice over the normal rice. However, the best aspect of the place was the service. The owner came out from the kitchen to make sure that everything was OK. He was very very friendly and seemed excited to have me in his restaurant. I complimented him on the dipping sauce, and he brought out a few more sauces with some eggrolls free of charge for me to try. He wanted my opinion on the sauces and if they could be made better. I love that! Not only did I get some free food, but I felt like the restaurant was focused on me and my experience. I must confess- I was very upset Chow House closed before I got to try it, and when I heard the couple who owned it were handing their location off to chef friends of theirs, I knew what was going to take their place was going to be good. I was starving after work and realized this place was still open and I was finally in the area to try it out: it's simple, expertly crafted and ultimately just unique, damn good flavors. I walked in and was instantly warmly greeted, and the entire time my food was being made up (everything's made to order, so be patient,) the owner chatted with me and her life from Malaysia was incredibly interesting and she was insanely nice, as were the cooks and the other staff. This place has a few chairs but is mainly a takeout restaurant, and while it doesn't look like much on the inside, the food speaks for itself. I ordered the Chile Shrimp Koko Bowl with two scoops of perfectly-cooked coconut rice, one of the most delicious slices of pineapple I've ever had (which actually ultimately ended up giving a little fruity edge to the rice, as well,) a surprisingly delicious, not-too-rich, well-seasoned cold macaroni salad scoop and a sweet and spicy-sauced, juicy, melt-in-your-mouth pile of shell-on shrimp. This was not what I was expecting; I was expecting it to be alright, not really good! I found myself spooning up the remaining sauce after I had finished the shrimp, which comes on a bed of sprouts and sauced cabbage and is tossed with scallions. The portions are also perfect: not too much, not too little- it's a great spot for lunch, especially, and very reasonably priced for what tastes like Malaysian home-cooking.
