I'm koko for Kokonut Grill! The Malaysian menu was reminiscent of Hawaii with macaroni salad and Hawaiian soda available. The service was friendly and our food came out in a reasonable time given the crowd that came in right after. Our food was fresh and not greasy which is hard to find for this price point. I am usually not a fan of coconut, but I loved the coconut rice which had a light flavor and not too sweet. The peanut sauce was FANTASTIC with chopped peanuts and seemed more authentic than the thinned out peanut butter served at some places. I do wish there were more veggies in the menu. Delicious! I came here with a friend on a weekday and we were the only people in the restaurant! That gave me plenty of time to look at all the items on the menu and see what Kokonut Grill has to offer. After staring at the menu for quite some time, the man behind the counter provided me with plenty of recommendations, which made my decision that much easier. I decided on getting the chicken katsu plate. It came with 2 scoops of coconut rice, which, believe me, was so good and macaroni on the side. This is not mac n cheese though, it's much better. I definitely recommend getting this dish. For first timers, they give you some spring rolls and dipping sauce. How generous and inviting...:) P.S. Try the Hawaiian Sun brand juices. I had two personal references that this place was delicious and add that in with all the positive Yelp reviews, I didn't need any more convincing to check this place out. It's a prime location; only one block away from the VCU Monroe Park campus so there's bound to be a ton of foot traffic. The restaurant before this (RIP Chow house) had some seriously solid food and this new place kept all of their furnishings. The three of us came on a Saturday evening for a late dinner, around 8 pm and this place was completely empty. We were greeted by a very friendly Front of house employee. The food here I would label as Asian fusion with Filipino and Hawaiian influences. You can either get a full meal, or the half meal. I got the half entrée with Shrimp and Coconut Rice, and a side of Macaroni Salad. I love it when places leave the shell on! I think it adds extra flavor to the dish and it seems more authentic to me. I got about 4-5 nicely sized shrimp for my dish and it tasted pretty good; it was sweet and salty but I did wish it had a little more heat to it. The coconut rice didn't really taste too unique for me and the Macaroni Salad was ok (I am not a fan of it in general and it came with the entrée). Before all of our food came out, the head chef (I am assuming) came out and gave us three complimentary vegetable egg rolls on the house! What a very nice gesture. There have been at least four different restaurant businesses in this exact same spot when I first started attending VCU back in 2007 so I hope this place stays. Guy behind the counter was great, nice personality, patient when explaining the dishes and concept and appeared to be a genuinely nice guy. Food is cooked to order so there is a slight delay in receiving your food but nothing too extreme. I wanted the grilled beef but unfortunately they were out of it, the guy behind the counter recommended the Loco Moco, apparently the island special, a bun-less burger topped with fried egg and teriyaki sauce with two sides of rice and one of macaroni salad. This item was good but not great, at first when trying the burger I was a bit disappointed as alone it doesn't contain a great deal of flavor but once I got a hit of the sauce in my next bite I was more into, the sauce is flavorful and is the real highlight of the dish. Not too much too say about the rice, it was well cooked and a nice add on but as with most plates of white rice, just a nice extra and nothing special. Mac salad also decent but nothing out of this world. This place has been on my to go list for quite some time! So glad I was able to try it before leaving Richmond. The location is walking distance from VCU campus and has a decent amount of street parking. The store was empty at around 6pm but the gentleman at the front was very sweet in helping us order since it was our first time. I ended up getting a Koko mini box which is 1/2 protein, 1 sauce, and 2 sides. I ended up getting grilled chicken with a spicy garlic sauce and a side of macaroni salad and coconut rice (definitely get this!!). I loved it. The portion was perfect for me, and I really enjoyed the coconut rice. It was not sweet at all if you are worried about those flavors clashing, but you can definitely taste the essence of coconut. You just have to try it! The chicken was really tender and the sauce added a lot of flavor. On the menu it said that it was "spicy" but I did not think it was unbearable. I've been eyeing this new food spot after reading all these great reviews and decided to grab a quick bite here before catching a show at The Altria. The reviews are all true - the owner is SO nice and enthusiastically greeted me upon arrival. The menu is simple in all the best ways and everything is fresh and made-to-order. For a full meal under $9, I definitely recommend getting a Koko Rice Box (your choice of protein, 2 scoops of coconut rice, and macaroni salad). I got the Crispy Chicken and katsu sauce which is pounded-out chicken breast that's lightly breaded and fried - the chicken is super crispy, flavorful and it's a very generous portion. My friend got the Koko Rice Box with Garlic Shrimp with coconut and garlic and said it was tasty but admitted it would be easier if there weren't shrimp shells; she didn't mind "working" for her food though :) Sides were also delish! Macaroni Salad had just the right amount of dressing and is mild in flavor but the real star was the Coconut Rice = delicate, coconut-y (or should I say "kokonut-y"?) and not "sticky" at all; it really pairs well with your protein choice! Also, it comes with a slice of pineapple which was nice and sweet! Half-way through our meal, the owner gave us some veggie spring rolls on-the-house = yum-o! The portions of the boxes were spot on (main difference between box and mini are protein portions and number of sides) and the mini was just enough for me. Unfortunately at the time we came the crispy chicken was gone which is what I wanted to try. Nonetheless, the grilled chicken teriyaki was great and the spicy sesame slaw as well! My wife and I stopped by Kokunut Grill in Richmond on our way to Washington DC from Charlotte. The restaurant is in a cool looking building on a cool looking street with a definite hipster vibe. Totally befitting what is an obvious campus haunt (Virginia Commonwealth University). The menu set up is pretty straight forward. Pick an entrees, protein, sides and sauces. My wife ordered the Koko Mini--sautéed tofu on a bed of shredded cabbage, coconut rice and macaroni rice. I had the Mee Goreng--stir fried noodles with tofu and spicy goreng sauce. To complete the Hawaiian vibe of the place we washed our lunch down with Hawaiian Sun guava nectar (wife) and luau punch (me). My wife really liked her lunch but wasn't crazy about the macaroni salad (didn't realize there's mayo in it). I thought the Mee Goreng was alright. Not bad. Not great. But OK. Don't k ow that is make another effort to go out of my way to come here again. But glad for the opportunity to try something a little different on the pan-Asian dietary spectrum. read more

Stopped in here for a quick bite. It's Asian fusion but it's basically Hawaiian food. Loco moco, noodles, macaroni salad and rice. They were out of beef. Food was pretty good. Loco moco is a hamburger topped with a fried egg. Fried egg is usually runny. Mine was over-hard, not sunny side up and runny. Hamburger patty was thin and gristly. The food is so good! I ordered delivery from here, and I am already looking forward to when I can do it again. I ordered the "box" - it comes with one protein, three sides, and one sauce. I chose the grilled chicken with teriyaki sauce with coconut rice, macaroni salad, and shredded cabbage. It also comes with a pineapple slice as a palate cleanser. For dessert I got the peanut pancake. Everything was really delicious, except for the macaroni salad. It had zero flavor, and it didn't add anything to the overall dish. Besides that, the chicken was well made and had the perfect amount of sauce. The rice had a wonderful aroma and essence of coconut; it paired perfectly with the chicken. The shredded cabbage was a nice refreshing note as well. The peanut pancake was also great. It is a crispy flaky pancake with peanut and sweet coconut flakes. What a way to end a meal. Upon hearing that a Hawaiian BBQ/Asian fusion place was coming to VCU's campus, I was so happy and excited to try it out! Although this place has been open for a few months now, their quality is getting better. From the food to the owners, this place is worth a try. If you're thinking ribs slathered in sauce BBQ, this isn't the place. Rather, it's a lot lighter and all of the food has a really tangy taste to it. I've tried the grilled chicken, shrimp, and katsu fried chicken koko boxes and they're all pretty great. The portion size is good. Every box comes with your protein, 2 scoops of rice, a cabbage salad, and a pasta salad. And a pineapple slice to top it off (always ripe and perfectly sweet!). I haven't tried the appetizers and desserts, but I definitely want to. The owners are WONDERFUL! I met the lady, and she is so nice. When I came in during a pretty calm lunch and while I was waiting for my order, she sat down next to me and started to ask me if I've been here before, what did I enjoy, and just how I was doing. I ordered the chicken katsu with coconut rice, my boyfriend got the grilled beef (I think that's what it's called?), and my friend got the sweet chili shrimp. I also ordered the boba and my friend got some canned juice. The boba was just okay, but my friend's juice was good. All 3 of our foods were pretty good. The shrimp and the coconut rice was my favorite part. The macaroni salad was almost as good as my favorite one. We all enjoyed our meals! Kokonut Grill has never failed me. Today I came in to get lunch with my friends before class at around 11:20. I felt bad when I realized they don't even open until 11:30, but they still took our orders. The owner is always so nice and even though we came in ten minutes prior to opening, he gave us a complementary order of their Veggie Rolls (which are very yummy). I wasn't too hungry today so I got the Chicken Satay appetizer instead of a Koko Box, though I think the Satay could suffice as a meal in itself as the portion is pretty generous - five skewers! I also tried their Matcha Bubble Tea for the first time and it was good, not too sweet like some places make it. It's also vegan which I find pretty appealing since too much dairy can be harsh on my stomach. Aside from their Chicken Satay, my favorites are the Garlic Shrimp and Grilled Chicken with Coconut Rice, though you can't really go wrong with anything you order. Kokonut Grill is definitely one of my favorite places to eat in the area. Service is wonderful and the food is delicious and really beautiful to look at.
