Real kolaches outside of Texas? Yippee!! The kolaches are more expensive than they generally are in Texas but with decreased supply, it makes sense. They have breakfast kolaches in the morning but not in the evenings which is when I went when they had more of the dessert kind. This location (somewhat new) is located inside The Daily Growler which is nice because you can get some grub with your beer. The dough was light and fluffy and the portion was quite large. If I lived closer to German Village, I would come here in the mornings on weekends to grab a few but I'm not sure it's worth coming from the northern part of town when I would rather just sleep in. Will definitely be stopping by again if I'm in the area! read more

My husband and I came to the new location while visiting family in town. Man- we had a large order and they did a great job filling it! We ordered a bunch of the sausage egg and cheese- my favorite. Also got the hashbrown egg and cheese, 2 cinnamon rolls, and one of the specials (mint chocolate chip). All were delicious. Staufs coffee was served for a great price. Now open Sundays, the sign says. Here's another small business owner that makes it all. The stuffed buns in the sweet section are little more than a sweet dinner roll with a topping spread on. I used to think $2 is a great deal, until every time I bite into one. That's when I think a good donut would have been a better choice. However the savory stuffed bun specials are on point. I always get a keilbasa jalapeño and some breakfast meat creation. Our first dine in was during winter, and front door opening and closing was more than coffee and a coat could handle. Not to mention seeing your hot savory cool off in a flash. Not it's been just carryout. I'm finally writing this review mostly to remind myself to skip the sweets for a donut not too far away. This is a fun place to visit. You have to hunt for parking like anywhere else downtown. There are just a couple tables inside, but we have never had trouble getting a seat when we've stopped in. The kolaches are tasty! They have sweet and savory ones. We usually go for breakfast, but this last visit was at lunch time. I had a philly cheese steak kolache that was quite tasty! I really don't want to leave a negative review for what is (as far as I know) the only kolache place in Columbus, but this was disappointing! I was first of all floored by the price tag. I think the one egg kolache I got came to right around $5.00. This is way more expensive than the Kolache places in Texas I used to go to ($2-3), but I had kolache for the brain so I went for it. Listen I mean, if you put egg, sausage and cheese in some bread it can only be so bad. But the bread was weirdly dense and the filling wasn't spectacularly seasoned. It was an okay time, but I don't feel any desire to go back. read more

Yum, YUM, YUMMMY. These housemade Kolache's are amazing! What's a kolache you may ask... it's a czech pastry with either a sweet or savory filling. The restaurant serves a variety of sweet kolaches, my two favorite are lemon custurd and sweet cheese. They also have breakfast kolaches. Sausage egg and cheese being there most popular breakfast pastry. And they have lunch kolaches like kielbasa and the delicious bierock (which is beef and cabbage). The restaurant has seating for about 15 or so. They also have take out and delivery. If your going on saturday, I recommend you go earlier than later. I hit up Kolache Republic for lunch the other day and even though I've been there a few times and I said it in my head 100 times, I still have a hard time remembering how to pronounce it. But I wanted to save you the embarrassment; it's pronounced kuh-lah-chee. Not that it matters how you pronounce it as long as you know it's pronounced as SO SO YUMMY!!! Kolach is a Czech and Slovak pastry made of slightly sweet dough filled with either a dollop of fruit, or sweet cheese filling. They also have savory options too. Kolache Republic is located inside a small but warm and welcoming shop in the heart of German Village and was founded 8 years ago by three friends Rick, Dusty and Doug. Rick grew up eating these tasty treats, while Dusty and Doug had both experienced kolache while visiting Texas. They were originally selling kolache at the local farmer's markets. In 2013, they opened the German Village shop. Their kolache always use the freshest ingredients and with no preservatives and try to source locally whenever possible.Since inception they have created over 25 different flavors. Some of the sweet options Kolache Republic offers includes: sweet cheese, blueberry sweet cheese, chocolate, apple pie, lime jalapeno sweet cheese, chocolate peanut butter fudge and maple bourbon pecan. The also often rotate through other seasonal and nut flavors. I have been able to try the sweet cheese, blueberry and lime jalapeno. Saturdays are special because they offer the insanely delicious cinnamon roll kolach and the bacon, egg & cheese kolach. These are NOT TO MISS and definitely my favorite on the menu!!! What I love is that they use simple ingredients in their signature kolach. It uses Falter's kielbasa, cheese and you have the option to have it with or without jalapeno that creates a tasty masterpiece. In addition to the sweet kolache offerings I noted above, there are both breakfast and lunch options available which also include vegetarian options like a Mac & Cheese kolach. Came here on a Tuesday for brunch around 11:30 am. It's very aesthetically pleasing, cute little green plants and a lot Cafe sign. Located in German village. The little savory pastries (Kolache) are premade but still fresh. Me and my friend shared the polish sausage (Kielbasa) and cheese one and the sausage, egg, and cheese. Very cheap, I think $3.65 each. Very tasty! The cheese was gooey and the meat was cooked well and was hot. It was all seasoned nicely. The dough part was soft and a little sweet. It was like a more classy toaster strudel! Very Simple. The woman was nice. I'll be back to try the lunch options! read more

Upset that I hadn't tried this little spot sooner. After doing some deep research on kolaches, I could not wait to grab some breakfast. Picture is of a sausage, egg, and cheese plus a lemon poppy seed. The bread is sweet and puffy, with a satisfying texture. I really enjoyed both and am excited to try more of the menu (especially Saturday specials!). They have a great coffee selection in addition to the food. I'm insanely jealous of anyone that lives in close proximity to Kolache Republic. I've been meaning to come for awhile, and it completely lived up to all expectations I had for such a simple and to the point dish. There's a few things on the menu here, but you're obviously here for the kolache. The place is cheap, quick, and will easily fill you up with one or two of the European specialty. The girl taking the orders was pleasant, and I loved the open kitchen that allowed us to scope out how the pastries were made. The kolache are pre-made and heated up to order, so it takes all of a minute to be down at a table and eating. I honestly can't speak to the authenticity or compare it to any past experiences, since I'm a first time kolach eater, but they were absolutely delicious. You can choose from a few savory and a few sweet kolache, and they usually have a different special each day. When I went, it was Jambalaya, which sounds amazing, but I went with a chorizo, egg, and jalapeno as well as kielbasa and cheese. Both were delicious, but the chorizo was my favorite. The pastry is so light and buttery, and they pack a ton of egg and chorizo into that bad boy, so you will get your money's worth. So I lied, and I had a third kolach. A chocolate filled treat. It was amazing! If I'm swinging by randomly, I'd stop into to get one of the sweet kolache, because the chocolate filling was so delicious. The sweet ones are a bit smaller than the savory kolache. The space is small and cozy and has a great view right onto High St. If I lived anywhere near here, I'd be eating this every weekend. That's probably a good thing considering the density of the dish, and I can only imagine how many calories each one is. They're cheap and tasty though which is a deadly combination. If you can't make it during the week, they are open on Saturdays from 8 - 2 pm, so you're in luck. I never had Kolaches before, but I had always wanted to try. I had long counted Columbus out on this, for I thought no one served it here, until one day I passed this place on High Street at the edge of the GV. I had it bookmarked for nearly a year. It is hard to judge the quality of thing you had never experienced before, especially a regional dish like this, when the more knowing and knee-jerk defenders of their regions taste may snarl at what may be a thin facsimile of the authentic formula, but for this virgin tongue it was fantastic. Kolache if you are unfamiliar, are stuffed buns filled with meat, eggs, potatoes, ect. Some are treats full of sweet filling. They are big in Texas where they function as a breakfast meal. I choose eggs, sausage, and cheese as it was brunch time and I hungered for such a combo. The buttery bun adds a unique taste to the hot filling. The eggs are scrambled of course, but are smooth and held the various flavors a well cooked scramble should have; the sausage was excellently done, powerful and moderately spicy as quality everyday sausage must be. The Kolache are pre-made and heated up before serving. I figured this would lack some taste, but I couldn't tell if it did. It was just as good as freshly made eggs and sausage. The coffee is strong and actually beats other breakfast shop brews in my opinion. The shop is small but immaculate, the staff friendly. Outside eating is available. I give it five stars as a nice breakfast place and the delicious Kolache, but note my inexperience above. read more

We got more than 4 dozens Kolache's ordered into our workplace today and they were definitely not what I was expecting!! My grandma makes the fruit filled thumbprint/triangle sized ones, however these were so bigger than that! I tried the sausage and egg filled sandwich and the blue kolache. Both were so delicious. First time in today and I enjoyed this place. The atmosphere was relaxed and the the staff was friendly. The Kolache was good- I had the Buffalo chicken kolache and whatever bread they use was very tasty. The coffee was Brioso as well so you can't go wrong there. Altogether a pleasant lunch or brunch location, and the owner personally came out to ask me how my food was and share some welcome information about regular specials and their creation. Very nice guy. The one criticism I have is that they had someone filming (an ad?) in the place an filmed me without any consent. If not for that, 5 stars. read more

Swung by this morning to pick up lunch. Uh, this a tactical error on my part, as the wonderful smell of that baked bread kept me hungry the entire morning! But, in case you need to know - I ad the Southwestern egg kolache and when lunch came around, both the filling and the bread were just as perfectly made as they'd been when I left the store. Not soggy or chewy (or worse), but simply room temperature. And that, my friends, is the mark of a great bakery. I came here as part of the breakfast food tour with Columbus Food Tours so it was really cool to talk to the owners and see how this place got started. Their kolache (kolaches??) are absolutely amazing! You can instantly tell how they will be when you walk into the little shop. The aromas of all the different fillings, the dough, and the soup fill the air. When you take a bite of a fresh and warm kolache, it is an out-of-this-world experience. As for their sweet kolache, I love their cheese and their almond kolache. The cheese kolache is especially delectable because it's not particularly sweet and it has this cheesy tartness/sweetness to it. For the savory kolache, I've had the buffalo chicken kolache and the breakfast kolache. Both of which, are also amazing. Their tomato soup is also delicious...Come to think of it, I really don't think I've had anything I disliked here. Overall, super cool owners, decent prices, and great food. read more

This place has been on our list since moving to Columbus. Having grown up with kolache's at home during the holidays and special occasions​ it was a must to eventually get here. Coming in and seeing them on display was a familiar sight! In appearance,​ they look like what I have had in Prague. However, the dough was a little different, I'm not a baker so I'm not sure what it was...it wasn't bad. All I can explain is they were a little denser. Tried the Thanksgiving kolache and a few sweet ones a while back. They were pretty good. I definitely preferred the sweet ones over the savory. The cream cheeses and fruit purees just pair with the soft fluffy dough better. They're the perfect sweet snack or brunch item. If you haven't tried one yet, do it soon. Kolache Republic is different than what I expected? Although I expected it to be a bit more like a coffee shop; I found it to be more of a breakfast place rather than a shop. I honestly do not recommend it because there are so many other shops around town that can make more than just a pot of coffee and off the self pastry. Holy Kolache. I got the sausage cheese and jalapeno kolache and it exceeded my expectations to say the least. First of all, they're massive, The dough is chewy and soft. The sausage was excellent. Plenty of cheese and it had a legitimate mild kick to it. Their sweet options looked absolutely delicious and I cannot wait to come back and try the chorizo kolache as well. Kolache? What's that, you say? Hmmm .... they're hard to describe, but oh so very good! I see lots of folks here calling them pastries, but kolache is not really "pastry". Kolaches are little pillows of goodness that are irrestible once you've had a bite of an authentic one. And Kolache Republic has authentic kolaches! The dough is a yeasty dough with just a hint of sweetness and the texture of a roll more than a pastry. Once formed, a filling is added that can be sweet or savory - take your pick. But the dough is key to authentic kolaches. And these kolaches are authentic - just like you'll find through central, east and southeast Texas made by those with Czech heritage. Traditional kolaches have a poppy seed, cream cheese, prune, peach, apricot and other fruit fillings. Kolache Republic has expanded on this idea and come up with almond (think almond croissant filling), chocolate, key lime, strawberry and more - unique flavors that I hope find their way back to Texas! The savory kolaches have the same dough wrapped around a brat-like sausage, some with cheese and jalapenos, and some with other meat/cheese fillings I have yet to try. Having lived most of my adult life in Houston, I could not believe it when we found Kolache Republic at the Clintonville Farmer's Market. Now that they've opened their restaurant I happily make the drive from Powell to the south side of German Village to get my kolache fix. The restaurant itself is rather unremarkable - small, with just a handful of small tables and a sort of industrial decor - but it's in a great location for those who work downtown or live around German Village. These guys have perfected the art of kolache-making and I'm thrilled to see Columbus embracing them. It's noteworthy that I've been there twice after noon, and both times they were nearly sold out of everything - frustrating for me personally, but it makes me happy to know they're selling out of product. I hope that means they're here for good! There are only two things that could make this place, and the savory kolaches, perfect: a drive-thru window (this location is not conducive to that but a girl can dream, right?), and Holmes Smokehouse sausage links. I'm not particularly crazy about the sausage they're using right now, but it definitely suffices when I need a kolache fix! Try them. You'll like them! Actually, I think you'll love them! read more

If you don't live in or near German Village, Kolashe Republic would make a great stop during a day trip. I popped in for a savory breakfast kolashe, but they were out of breakfast sausage & egg and were making more. So, I got a keilbasa and cheddar version. I'm not really a sweet pastry fan -- but these look pretty good! I could see myself picking up a few to accompany other brunchy items for guests (though I'd have to pass through Pistacia Vera and Kittie's Cakes territory first... hmmm). The savory kolashe was delicious. For $3.xx it was large and filling, I didn't think it was overpriced at all! Not looking forward to putting this in my calorie counter, though. Looks like they have a small but constantly changing sandwich menu. Today's sandwich included German bologna, pickled vegetables, hard boiled egg, and some other items. Definitely creative! I'll stick this on my list for when I'm not feeling so fluffy. The cappuccino machine was out of order on our visit, but they were offering iced Brioso coffee. Kolashe Republic definitely has a good independently-owned, neighborhood, community conscious feeling. I recognized Matt W.'s card on the community postings board!! Staff (owners?) are friendly and engaged in their work and their customers. My sense is that Kolashe Republic is still on the upward climb of reaching their potential. I saw so many possibilities here, and good things will just keep coming as the business evolves into their spot in the community. I usually begrudge too-large menus, but I felt the savory side of things could use a few more options, especially if the one savory breakfast item is prone to sellouts. Coupled with the out-of-order cappuccino machine, and I'm kept from full-on fandom. Plus I'm sure there is some personal preference at work here for not being in love with sweet pastries in general. Aromatic smells waft from the bakery. My senses heighten. I step inside with anticipation. Someone's getting a damn kolache. My friend, whose culinary taste I greatly respect, raved of the sweet cheese kolache. I opted for the blueberry sweet cheese, which has a very European, guiltless way about it. It's sweet, satiating, but not at all gluttonous. Just the perfect, delicate pastry to start my morning. Savory sausage kolaches and German kolaches are also available for lunch. One sweet kolache for $2 = the perfect, mildly indulgent pastry. If you are heading to a party or hosting a get together, give these guys a ring. Call ahead, and ask for extra love. read more

I put Kolache Republic on my list of things to check out when I have the time. When they posted about a peanut butter kolache with bruleed banana - they got moved to the top of the list, fast! Whatever goodness I had conjured up in my head, they hit the mark in the real world. You can tell immediately that whoever makes the kolache dough, knows what they're doing and has a passion for it. This isn't a recipe you whip up in your own kitchen. I also had the sausage, cheddar and jalepeno jelly kolache. The combination of flavors is spot on for people who like salty-spicy-sweet flavor profiles. I can't wait to go back and try more! So backstory: I grew up in Dallas and there's a million little donut shops down there. Not krispy kremes...not dunkin donuts. Just a bunch of mom and pop shops. In addition to donuts, they also sell kolaches. So in a way, kolaches kind of remind me of home; even though home is not some far away European country...strange, i know. Anywho- I got extra excited to see Kolache Republic pop up on the list of new businesses in Columbus. I had to have me some. I had to. The day finally came where I was in the neighborhood so I stopped by. They have fruit kolaches sitting out and savory kolaches stored away in the oven. I got some savory ones and he threw in a sweet one to try (the staff was really freaking nice, by the way). The savories weren't quite like I remember from Texas. There was a big hunk of Kielbasa in there whereas the one I've had in the past were made with smaller-sized sausages, which makes for easier eating, if you ask me. Kolache Republic also has specials each day, I believe, and this day was a chicken kolache that was really good. It was my first time having a chicken-based kolache but it was tasty. The sweet kolache was very reminiscent of a danish-pastry, which I'm generally not a fan of so I could do without... but you should give it a try. I would definitely recommend this place if you're into meat and sweet pastries. Unfortunately, there weren't any vegetarian or vegan options so I will no longer be able to visit. But if you don't have any dietary restrictions, you should give this place a try. Street parking was easy to navigate. This place is pretty much take-out only. I think they have 1 or 2 tables. They close around 2pm or earlier, I believe, so make sure to get there early. read more

Went here this morning. It's a small shop on the south side of German Village. They had a nice assortment of pastries although I'm not sure how many folks are going to like them. while they appear to be danishes, they're really not. The base is cake-like. And they're expensive. While an ordinary dansh will run you a dollar or less, these are two dollars each. And they're small. Maybe once in a while but not on a regular basis. read more
