Like most everyone else, I was clueless as to what the heck a kolache was. Now that I know, I'm hooked. The pastry part is super soft, yeasty, and perfectly sweet. Then they fill it with a dollop of something delicious- we tried the sweet cheese, apple-cinnamon, chocolate, and strawberry. All of the fillings are great- no pre-packaged jams or pie fillings in these. The strawberry was my favorite. You can tell that they had pureed fresh berries, and it makes all the difference. The sweet cheese was also really delicious. We also got iced coffee, and while they were a little pricey in my opinion, the coffee was great quality. My only complaint is that they are just not open enough! Not open Sundays, which has got to be prime pastry-eating time, right? And them during the week, only open until 2. Makes it impossible for me to get there on a workday. They said that they are still figuring out what hours are going to work. If you're going to Panera next door...why?!? This place has such fresh food at great prices! You could easily get out of here for $5-$6/person! Ever since I had my first kolache at Angry Baker, I have wanted to try this place for a while. So the first time I stop in I decided to share the experience by buying 20 kolaches for a department potluck. I got like 5 different kolaches (cheese, apple, poppy, blueberry and lemon). Best decision I made. I usually try to make something for our department potlucks. My concoctions usually don't end well. I was certain that bringing Kolaches would win me back some friends. Oh-em-gee, this place is fabulous! I visited here on a food tour and while I've never heard of kolaches, I'm officially a fan for life. These guys know what they're doing. I tried the bacon, egg and cheese breakfast kolache and also the lemon curd kolache. Seriously folks, I wish I could do the flavors justice worth my description. The pastry dough itself is light, with a hint of sweetness; this, combined with fluffy egg and well-seasoned bacon, was the perfect balance of flavors. The lemon curd kolache was equally pleasing: the lightly sweet dough topped with a slightly tart lemon curd was sweet without being sickeningly sweet. It's official - this place rocks. Stopped in today as I was walking by. Guy behind the counter educated me about what a kolache is, showed me what they have and even gave me a sample. Before visiting Kolache Republic I'd never tried a Kolache before- sweet or savory. After my first visit I can't really say I'm a big fan of either version. I ordered a sausage, egg, and cheese savory version and a blueberry sweet cheese version, and neither was outstanding. The sausage, egg, and cheese tasted mostly like scrambled eggs inside a dinner roll. The eggs were a little dry, or seemed not to be super fresh would be a better way to put it, and there was little sausage and cheese taste. The bread was a little bit too abundant compared to the filling as well, and this one was pretty mediocre. The sweet kolache was a little better and actually reminded me of Hawaiian bread rolls with it's soft, sweet dough. The sweet cheese filling tasted like cream cheese mixed with butter though, and there was almost no blueberry taste at all. Everyone really seems to like these pastries, and I'll admit they were very large for the price, but overall I wasn't blown away at all. read more

I've done a decent bit of work down in Texas and Louisiana, so Kolaches are a pretty known quantity for me. That said, I was a little surprised to hear that the folks at KR wanted $3-5 each for them, because I was used to little pastries or dough wrapped sausages that usually could be found for a dollar or two at most donut shops or markets. I decided to give them a try after going running on Saturday, and now I see what the difference is! First off, the space is on the smallish side, but there are a few tables you can sit at if you like. When you walk in, you're greeted by the folks at the counter and presented with a large bakery case holding their sweet pastries, and a menu board explaining today's flavors and the savory options that are put together in the back. First reason they're more expensive than I expected? They're much bigger than I expected! The savory ones are built around a full size sausage link, not a little smokie, and the sweet ones are basically the size of a small cake. I brought home a pair of savory and a pair of sweet to share with my wife, and we were quite pleasantly stuffed. I really liked the Kielbasa, jalapeno, and cheese as a spicy wake up call, but my wife preferred the breakfast sausage and egg offering. As far as sweet goes, we both liked the lemon cream, which made my wife think wistfully of the clotted cream she used to enjoy in the UK, but the winner was the seasonal pumpkin cream scone, which was a perfect burst of autumn flavor. I'd say these guys are probably going to be a "sometimes" treat for me, especially since since my to-go bag and a coffee set me back $14, but they're absolutely worth trying if you're in the German Village area and looking for something different. read more

I'm just one of those that believe local entrepreneurs need our economic support and KOLACHE REPUBLIC definitely deserves it. The guys have scored with the constant menu item GARLIC SOUP and then adding another one of their homemade soup beside it. The corner location is a good one but I wish I had a way to increase foot traffic rather than a destination. To follow the guys on FB allows me to stay in tune with the daily Kolache as well as share what's on the menu with friends. To grab something on the weekend and have it around the house is a wise investment.....breakfast Kolache's make a lazy hazy weekend morning so much more fun. Meh, not sure what I expected a Kolache to be or if I thought it would be more exotic. The shop is cute and small and looks clean. The 2 men who were working were friendly. I ordered a sweet cheese Kolache and a blueberry one. The Kolache reminded me of a dinner roll or hot dog bun bread with a dollop of cheese. While I can now say that I ate Kolache, It's something that I wouldn't necessarily return for in the future. I've had great intentions of checking this place out but it isn't in my "flight plan." Today was the day and let me tell you and everyone else I know that it was worth the side trip. I grew up in Cleveland and miss the prevalent small businesses that illustrate ethnic blend of each neighborhood. The breakfast kolache tastes like Christmas morning. I find that where Kolache Republic really shines is their daily lunch specials. You never know what you're going to get, from bourban bbq chicken kolaches, to jalapeno cheeseburger kolaches, to the jambalaya kolache with their special hot sauce, but I am continually impressed with every one! So much so in fact I went back a second day in a row to order a dozen to enjoy back home ( I was traveling from Michigan). Unfortunately when I placed my order for a dozen, he refused to sell me more than 4, saying they were his best sellers and he didn't want to leave his other customers without. I was confused because the website warned that orders greater than a dozen would need to be ordered a day in advance. It was also 07:00 when I made my purchase. My co-worker brought in some sweet kolaches for everyone to try and they were fantastic. The bread is fluffy and light to go along with the sweet jelly flavors added on top. I tried the strawberry and blueberry and both were excellent. I immediately took my wife with me the next morning to check out their spot in German Village. We both had breakfast sandwiches. She had a hash brown, egg, and cheese and I chose the chorizo, egg, cheese, and jalapeno. The jalapeno definitely adds a kick with the chorizo, but both sandwiches were pretty darn good. We finished it off with one of the best cinnamon rolls that we have had in awhile. With coffee for my wife, our meal came out to $13. $13 bucks! I love this place. Really good food. You have to try the Kielbasa and cheese. They have different specials all the time. So far my favorites are the Bourbon BBQ and Chicken Enchilada. Seriously good. I only have two gripes: 1. Their hours. They close at 2pm. This would make such a great late night food. Sure, the sweet pastries they serve are more of a brunch item, but the savory stuff really screams "late night drinkin' food". 2. The location. I think this place would KILL IT if they moved it closer to the campus area. This is going to be an every weekend stop. Being new to town, I googled the bejeebus out of every neighborhood that seemed fun to wander about. With nothing pressing on a Saturday, I casually suggested we should grab a kolache and a cup of joe and stroll around. My partner in crime asked what a kolache was...the plans were then set in stone. By the time we reached the counter, one kolache a piece would not do (though they are really a nice size, you'll want an extra for later) we ordered two a piece and shared...or, tried to. Before the fillings are described, these have the tastiest dough I have ever had. Pillowy bites, lightly flaky on the outside and perfectly dense under the filling and sweetened just enough. I can't attest to the pecan (there was no sharing there) , the sweet cheese and blueberry cheese were on point (not too sweet or cloying), and the lemon poppy is out of this world. Do opt for an iced coffee while you are there, not sure of the blend or roast but, a solid cup of joe. read more

OMG. I just found my new favorite food. I would eat here every single day if I could! I've been a couple of times so far, and already have it in my head I'm getting it again this weekend smile emoticon This is hands down the tastiest breakfast food. It's like a puffier version of a kings Hawaiian roll stuffed with whatever yumminess you want. I have tried the chorizo and egg, bacon and egg, and the Kielbasa. The chorizo and egg and bacon and egg are a little more filling than the kielbasa because they are stuffed with food. The kielbasa only has the sausage and cheese - you can add jalapenos to it if you want to spice it up. I think the kielbasa is my favorite though. It's so spicy, and who doesn't love kielbasa?? Also, their coffee is great! So on top of everything tasting amazing, this place is so fast. They make the Kolache (Kolache's? Idk .. whatever, apparently there's no "s" for the plural, but it sounds weird) ahead of time and heat them up real quick on the spot so all you have to do is pick which one you want and you're done! They also have sweet ones, but since I don't like sweets that's not what brings me in. My boyfriend loved the chocolate one though and said they were amazing. If you haven't been here or ever had Kolache before I highly recommend trying this.. you will get addicted! read more

The dough is kinda like a plain white bread deal and while it didn't floor me, it was fresh and fluffy. The food is great and is really moderately priced. Coffee is slightly above average. It is perfect for quick, 15 minute breakfast meetings but not a good place to camp our for a morning and get some work done. The staff was friendly enough but when I was I there shortly after opening half of the employees smelled like weed, which might have made them make better kolaches, this was not very of putting my me, though I do not smoke myself, but if it would be for you maybe the Albers next door would be a good option.
