Ordered catering from Kolam for my parent's anniversary party and everyone really enjoyed the food. We ordered the lamb Biriyani which was chick full of tasty lamb. We also enjoyed the chicken Chettinad and the Baigan Bharta, as well as the Cauliflower and Potatoes. The big hit was the Goan fish curry. Everyone went back for seconds. If you haven't gone to Kolam recently you are missing out. We've been to Kolam's lunch buffet on Mondays, which is always delicious and an outstanding value at $15 but this was our first time having dinner. Everything was incredible but the Goa Fish curry is next level delicious! We all loved the lamb samosas and the vegetable pakoras and agreed that the garlic naan is the best we've ever eaten. We also tried at lamb dish that had lentils in it and it may be my new favorite dish. We ordered medium heat on the spice level and it was perfect. A little zip but all the flavors shone thru. The staff couldn't be nicer or more accommodating. I think they get overlooked because they're not in a shopping plaza. Next time you crave Indian give them a try...you'll love it! read more

I've been to Kolam several times in the past 15 y and the food is awesome. During my family dinner last week the hostess politely suggested a few specials which the chef help to serve to our table. We have enjoyed Kolam's excellent food for many years. However, in the last few years, the service and ambience seem to decline. The male host and waiters were borderline surly. He would be waived to a table, rather than led to it. The restaurant itself was dark and needed a freshen up. Recently, however, we went there for dinner. Two friendly young women waited on us with kind attention. The house itself seem to be brighter. The food was, as usual, excellent. I'm glad to have gone there and hope all my neighbors will as well. They are not bad. The place is absolutely stunning inside. I mean..really really beautiful. With comfortable booths! It is always nice to dine in comfort so I loved that. That being said..they are on the pricey side. And they seemed to be hyping us to spend more money. When I ordered a glass of wine, they asked if I meant the whole bottle! All I wanted was a glass. I mean..could have been a mistake but...I don't know. Then one of my dining partners who was not feeling well asked for his to go and they were about to put it down as TWO orders not one. I ate here once a few years ago and remember the food being rather bland, so I was surprised when my parents told me that this was their new favorite restaurant. They've been to the weekend lunch buffet three times in the past couple of months, and they're pretty picky eaters, so I was really interested in trying it myself. Well, after a lovely (but also gut-busting) lunch today, I now see why they love it. It's not the largest buffet or the cheapest Indian buffet in Connecticut, but everything we had was delicious, and I kept going back for more. I tried a little bit of everything on offer, and there wasn't a loser in the bunch. The buffet is small and tucked away in a corner of the restaurant. It features 2 meat entrees, 4-5 vegetarian entrees, 1 fish entree, 1 vegetarian biryani, two desserts, an extensive table for making your own chaat. I thought the selection was a little small, but then after we sat down with our plates piled with food, our waiter delivered a sizzling plate of tandoori chicken, a plate with masala dosas, and the standard naan. The naan was great, and the tandoori chicken was so moist and tender (I love that they used dark meat instead of the usual white!). My heart, however, belonged to our perfectly crispy and perfectly seasoned masala dosas. I would have asked for another if I had the stomach space, but after 1 and a half plates of food, I had reached my limit. I was also really fond of the kerala fish curry (so tender!) and the chicken tikka masala, which is my mom's personal favorite. At the end, she literally filled up a bowl with just the gravy from the chicken tikka masala and dipped her naan in it to polish it off. The service throughout was stellar. My water glass never got below half empty, and we felt well taken care of. At $13 per person, it's not as great of a deal as Haveli in Middletown, but it's close to my folks and they serve up a quality buffet that left us all very happy diners. The main entrees are a little pricey ($16.95 for chicken tikka masala at dinnertime), so I highly recommend the buffet for the value and outstanding food! read more

Stopped in Kolam for lunch while in Newtown. It was a buffet for lunch and it had all the Indian special dishes I could imagine. There were plenty of tables for dining in as well. The food was great. Especially the Chicken Tikka masala I came to know from my friends and I decided to try. It was nothing short of fabulous. I was mind blown. Seasoned perfectly - really good rice and naan bread! And the 2 guys there were very friendly and efficient! Don't miss out on the mango lassi, and if you are lucky to drop by in the afternoon after lunch you can take away a cup of chai tea. Kolam is now a pathetic shadow of its former wonderful self. Gone is the carpeting that made for a sophisticated, quiet intimacy. Gone are the tablecloths and cloth napkins that enhanced the dining experience. Copper serving tureens have been replaced by plastic cereal dishes, soothing classical Indian music by a 50-inch TV blaring non-stop hip-thrusting videos. Food is good and portions generous. Service is pleasant but utterly clueless - we sat for 15 minutes with all the dirty dishes on the table while waiting for dessert. Finally we removed them ourselves, and the server never even noticed or apologized. We won't be going back - there's a much better alternative in New Milford. read more

Great Indian food, will adjust spiciness to your taste. I appreciate that because I don't always know what a dish is, they will explain it to me (even for a call-in takeout order) and if you're not sure what you might like, they will suggest something for you. I came on here to check out what others are saying and yep they claim the management changed and the food has gone downhill which really stinks bc it was always one of the few very stable restaurants around here. Amazing amazing food. I wish I could've tried more. My husband and I shared chicken tikka masala (probably the best I've ever had) and coondapur chicken. Both excellent. The chutney at the beginning was amazing - each flavor. The naan was perfection. And they gave extra rice without having to ask. The problem is in the service- specifically one particular waiter. Let's do the good things first before diving into the bad service. I was there to meet with a friend and there multiple wait staff that take turns taking care of us. Most were nice and on point with timing. Food was extremely delicious. However, this one waiter (male, younger) got impatient once we were done with our meals. He kept coming to us to ask if we have put down our cards for the bill (we don't get to see each other often so we were taking our time) and if we were done with writing our tips in there. Please bear in mind that the restaurant was empty and we weren't holding up any line. The restaurant was closing at 9 and it was only around 8.15-8.20 at this point. We finally paid our bill and got the tips taken care of. It was around 8.45 and this waiter actually came up to us to tell us that the restaurant was closing. He clearly just wanted to get off work early! So my friend and I ended up finishing our conversation outside. One of the other wait staff came out to ask why we were outside. We told him that we were essentially kicked out. He didn't say much. Listen I get it. It's a Friday night, there's only 15 mins until closing time. Please hold out until actual closing time before you kick out people. I'm so turned off by it, I can happily say I won't be returning. read more

Always a pleasurable experience here. I've been coming between 10-15 years. I always come for the weekday buffet. I enjoy tasting a little of everything and exploring Indian food. Never a challenge to get a table here. It's always on the emptier side when I dine here, they have a huge dinner crowd though. This is one of three Indian restaurants I will eat at in CT. I hadn't been here in a few years and just recently returned. The place was just as good as I had remembered. Inside is a very clean establishment and coming for the lunch buffet is ideal. This time we came on a Monday and we're the only ones dining in. A few more people came soon after but even when it's not crowded the food is fresh and delicious, the staff is polite and courteous and the place is clean. I had a little of everything at the buffet and was full after just a couple trips. Even though it's a buffet they brought out fresh bread, one was a thin cracker style and the other was the soft, crispy and fluffy bread called naan. They also brought out chicken which was seasoned perfectly. The tandoori chicken was especially good with some veggies and eaten with the naan. Also make sure you leave room for the dessert which is a light and sweet rice milk and while I'm not sure of the Indian name, I know it was delicious and a great way to end the meal. read more

Food is very good. But the person we spoke to on the phone and even in person keep trying to ask for a tip. On the phone he said " we take cash tip " we leave with our food he says " cash tip ". Kolam is good. It's about the best Indian restaurant in the Monroe/Trumbull/Newtown area. I have been here several times. It is a bit expensive in my opinion, but good. This is one of the reasons I don't go there too often. I have to be prepared to spend a bit of money when I go there so it is more for special night dining. Here's some recommendations: The Shrimp Vindaloo is great, as is the Chicken Tandoori. My husband loves the Shrimp Palek Paneer and I like the Prawns Kowkan. (They could be more generous with the prawns, but they are big in size if not sufficient in quantity.) I had the Sagwalla Gosht $18 (Lamb with Spinach in a sauce) tonight as take-out with the Chitrannam $8 (Rice with coconut). The Rice was GREAT. The Sagwalla was a bit too salty for my taste and the meat was good but not tender enough. Due to the salt, I won't order this dish again. Service is always gracious. read more
