We are in Connecticut visiting family. This was our first time trying Taco Dia in Newtown, CT. We stopped to try their happy hour menu. Taco Dia is a contemporary Mexican restaurant located in The Village at Lexington Gardens. We really enjoyed the happy hour margaritas and tacos. I recommend the Cosmoritas. We recommend the 3 Pack Pork Belly Al Pastor with achiote onions, roasted pineapple and pickled sweet peppers. I also tried the birria Pho soup and I didn't care for it. Took my wife here for dinner and it was so good I'm planning on going back with my girlfriend! The food was genuinely so good, it was very tasty and there was a ton of unique food options. I personally had the Crunchwrap which was light years beyond anything I've seen elsewhere. We had a great waiter as well, unfortunately I didn't get his name but he was funny and came around exactly when we needed him. The pricing was also super great and I'm still amazed that every main dish comes with loaded fries! It's such a small but appreciated touch as a customer. read more

I rarely give 5 stars but the food and service were exceptional. The whole restaurant is gluten free which for those that no the struggle, being able to order anything is wonderful. It is a classic Mexican bar and restaurant with the decor clean and comfortable and familiar. They easily accommodated my wife's garlic allergy as well. We sampled 6 different tacos. The pork belly Al pastor , Baja fish and the carnitas were delicious. We had the Patatas Bravas special which had a crema and a Bravas sauce both. We ordered the Chipotle Honey Chicken tacos, the Pork al Pastor tacos, guacamole with chips, and churros for dessert. The Chipotle Honey Chicken tacos were out of this world -- sweet, spicy, and packed with flavor. They really bring the heat in the best way possible. Absolutely a 10/10. The Pork al Pastor tacos were equally impressive, super flavorful and cooked perfectly. The guacamole was fresh, super bright, and the chips that came with it were so good. And the churros??? Woooo.. Have been here multiple times! I love the pink Cadillac margarita! Service is always friendly and accommodating (I am more of a "sit at the bar" type girl). Typical Mexican restaurant decor, but more low key, not over the top. Cheesesteak, pork belly, and birria are some of my regular go to tacos as well as the amazing guac! read more

Fun place with really great staff. The seating area can feel a bit tight. But there's also a larger bar area if you want to eat on that side. We tried the guacamole, a few drinks and some tacos and the churros. I would definitely come back and try other things on the menu. It's just alright. The food was fine except the skirt steak taco. I wish the birria had dipping sauce. Overpriced for just okay tacos. The service was fine if not a little slow. This place gets so many mixed reviews from people I know, I just had to try it for myself. First off it was a Friday evening so I understand it'll be a lot busier than other days of the week. But it took about 10 minutes for us to even get water brought to our table. Then an additional 10 minutes for chips and salsa. Our server was nice. Decor inside is very nice with pops of bright colors. Nice size menu. We got an appetizer under the To Share part of the menu - Esquites Street Corn Dip. While it tasted Amazing the size was not shareable. They need to move from the mini cast iron to at least a small size one. All the tacos come on a small tortilla. Taco Dia has great potential. Excellent Mexican cuisine, decent cocktails, friendly personell and a great space, in- and outdoors. At the moment, there still seem to be some start-up issues with the service, eg table-per-server ratio seems too high with their staff being a bit overwhelmed and there was considerable variation in the two identical drinks I ordered, though I would hope they sort out these initial challenges quickly. The tacos I ordered tasted great, with the chorizo being my favorite, though the Birria was rather messy to eat with the hot sauce drizzled over it and I prefer a true, strained consommé to go along with it rather than starchy, thick gravy - but the flavors were certainly there. Everything was perfectly cooked to perfection, and I could tell that everything was fresh. Also I loved how amazing the staff was. Taco Dia brings a unique dining experience to Newtown with a modern twist on traditional Mexican food. We were easily able get a table on a Saturday night and the service was excellent. We loved the modern decor inside and we also loved the music!! It was so hard for us to decide what to order because the menu has so many great food and beverage options. The Birria smash burger and crispy chicken sandwich tasted dry, but we really enjoyed the corn and mushroom quesadilla. We also loved the complimentary chips and salsa! Don't let them catch you on the "Which kind of water?" question if you ask for water. The choices offered will be "still," or "carbonated." If it's carbonated, you have a choice of brand. If it's "still," it comes in a blue bottle and will still cost you money ($7, as I remember). This comes without any warning, you're shot in the wallet before you know what happened... Also, be prepared for the chef to forget you exist; or, rather, that your order is on the board in front of him. It took 40 mins for two simple lunches in a mostly empty restaurant to come out to us. They were effusively apologetic, but--maybe they could've comped something--like maybe the "still water"--by way of apology? I visited taco dia with my girlfriends for the first time ever yesterday and we will definitely be returning for more! I was a bit skeptical given that I am a pretty picky eater, however the tacos were absolutely amazing. The guacamole as the starters were from fresh avocados and delicious. It was one of my favorite places i've went to dine-in. Our server was very polite and attentive with our food. The vibrant vine of the restaurant is very relaxing and overall a positive atmosphere. We just tried this for the first time today and we had very high hopes and we were very varied with our opinions on items. For both of us the best dish we had was the chicken tortilla soup, which has a depth of flavor and was very good. The complimentary chips are warm which is nice and a thicker chip which is not my preference but they were good and the salsa seemed homemade and was slightly smoky, which I normally don't like but it was good. The tacos is where it gets tough, because we tried a few types (chicken tinga very watery) (chorizo average and ground) (red pork carnitas average). I would say the current 4 star rating is about fair with some items a 5 star and others a 3 star, and even with my overall reviews of the tacos they are better and more homemade than the average chain Mexican restaurant. A great addition to Newtown! The interior decor is gorgeous, bright and fun. There is tons of seating at the bar along with traditional indoor and patio seating. The staff were extremely attentive, offered suggestions, and asked for feedback. The menu is affordable and provides many opportunities to try different things since the tacos are single order. I tried the chorizo, beef birria and carnitas. The beef birria was definitely my favorite as it was full of rich flavor. The kitchen is completely gluten free - they make the corn tortillas in house and there are multiple vegan options too. I definitely recommend asking for their house made hot sauce to pair with your meal. The habanero one provides the perfect kick. I predict lots of success in Taco Dia's future. They will soon offer lunch, happy hour, and late night happy hour so there is plenty of options to try them out. read more

We recently ordered two street corn cobb dinner salads for takeout. We've enjoyed them in the past, but this time was a disappointment. When my husband picked up the order, he immediately thought there was a mistake--the salads were significantly smaller than before, containing barely a handful of chopped lettuce and minimal toppings. The salads came in small takeout containers that weren't even filled to the brim. When he asked if the order was correct, the staff confirmed that it was. It seems they've changed their portion sizes, as these were half the size of what we previously received and that was already smaller than a typical dinner salad at other restaurants. For $19 each, we expected a proper dinner salad, not something comparable to a small side salad. We're very disappointed and won't be returning, why would we. I had the chance to dine at Taco Dia in Newtown . Just a friendly reminder - I was NOT there during happy hour , so please turn the music down during fine dining times , unless your a BAR that serves food or are you a FINE DINIG restaurant that serves drinks ? Which is it ? I did not go there for the music I went there because my daughter said it had great reviews and I wanted to take her out for her contract to a new job, I tend to think otherwise . As a professional chef - I knew the shortcuts that this restaurant had taken . Firstly , you do not take a Costco chicken strip deep fat fry it , put it in a soft shell taco, add shredded lettuce , tomato 2 different kinds of cheeses and sell it for 4.50. Not only was this the American version of a taco but was crappy at best . Toppings were a xtra , lime was free . Secondly , I also ordered the skirt steak taco , the shell was fine , the meat wasn't seasoned and the same toppings as chicken , lettuce , cheese & tomato . Maybe this restaurant needs to learn more about Mexican cuisine and authentic toppings . No need to mention them here , just stop assembling & faking food calling it Mexican . BTW - sides were extra - Guacamole , jarred salsa ( not home made) & sour cream were all extra . So the 4.75 for the skirt steak and the 4.50 chicken tacos (2) would have run you in the area of $20.00. A little steep for 3 tacos and toppings . Thanks for the lime wedges but the other ingredients are required to the feel of eating Mexican . We also ordered salsa ,chips & guacamole- this was a whopping 13.00 . Very steep - 3.00 for chips & 10.00 for a large guacamole bowl . Who is doing food cost analysis at these restaurants these days ? What a way to put yourself out of business . Yes there was a crowd around the bar - but they were leftovers from happy hour . Try turning down the music during dining time and adjust the ambiance . Then came the $14.00 margarita - a little too heavy on the tequila. 50% ice in 12 ounce glass and 50% margarita . Where do they come up with these prices ? Bar tender needs training . No measurements used at all . I am a professional chef that wishes to remain anonymous. I hope this area of New Fairfield restaurants raises there standards of quality and become food cost consciousness. I am a member of the Le Emis Escoffier , chapter president of the Connecticut Chefs Association CCA and member of World Association of Cooks Society WACS . I am NOT here to condemn I am here to build awareness . People no longer cook food they all assemble foods. It's very obvious when people cut corners and " fake the plate " . Please be genuine and authentic . Just because you put a protein in a taco doesn't make it a taco - the toppings that are added is what makes it authentic . Service was good and the cleanliness was OK . Just note that all things ordered off any menu require a minimum of 15% tip . GF heaven! We ate all the things: street corn dip, guacamole, tacos, churros. I had the ahi tuna rice bowl which was big and tasty. The churros are amazing and I wish I live closer.
