This is a great Indian place. The food is absolutely delicious, everything is well seasoned without being fiery and some of the dishes here I haven't seen elsewhere. We frequently get takeout from Kolam (although the restaraunt's ambience is nice) and get the meat platter, a chicken curry and naan bread, and we have a dinner and a lunch for under $30. Have not been here in a while and I now know that is a mistake. The food and sauces are excellent. I had a chicken coconut milk entree with a roasted cauliflower appetizer. Both were well prepared and amazing. My usual choice consists of different dishes from the vegetarian selections. The vegetable balls are always a great choice. Who knew you could find such a fantastic Indian buffet place in Newtown, CT? This restaurant seems to be either new, recently renovated, or have been up kept very well over the years. Servers were professional, polite, and very attentive. The lunch buffet does not have a large variety (8-10 entrées including rice). However, everything was delicious, not too bland or salty. I was slightly disappointed that there were three types of chicken dishes but no lamb. What really knocked the meal out of the ball park was the plate of freshly-made Tandoori chicken that each table gets. What a fabulous idea! I never thought it was appropriate to have Tandoori chicken sitting in a buffet bin when it should always be fresh out of the oven. These are some of the best Tandoori chicken I've ever had, perfectly charred on the outside, with juicy flavorful meat on the inside. I have not even tried the food. Have heard positive things about the food and thought I would order take out. When I spoke to the gentleman taking my order, I was amazed by his horribly rude behavior. He was practically yelling at me because I asked him if they could make food without nuts. I have never had any restaurant employee be so rude. I will not be eating at this place. There are many great Indian restaurants where the customer is treated courteously AND the food is good. My family and I eat here regularly. In addition to friendly and helpful service, the food is excellent! We usually go for lunch and indulge in the buffet (which is unusual for our family - we tend to shy away from buffets). However, food is consistently fresh and tasty and the options are outstanding. They recently introduced two new vegetable dishes which were so full of favor - they have become two of my favorite dishes: Udupi Veg Korma and Karaikudi Mushroom Curry. I highly recommend them! This is truly an excellent Indian food restaurant. Every time I go here I eat an absurd amount of food and leave happy. There's really something for everyone here. Even though one member of our group wasn't a particularly adventurous eater, they were able to find something they enjoyed. First of all, you have to get the naan. If you're going to get the garlic naan bring some breath mints because they are not shy with the garlic. The samosas are also really good, especially with any of the three dipping sauces that they give you when you sit down. The vindaloo is very spicy which I like. However, it's not a completely unmanageable amount of spice allowing the flavors to really shine through. I thought I was too stuffed for dessert, but they brought a complimentary bowl of rice pudding to the table which I couldn't pass up. Food is great. Service is horrendous. We have been there a few times and each time we have to wait and inordinate amount of time to be served. We ordered dessert. It never came. We ask for the check. It takes 30 minutes to come. And it's not like the restaurant was busy. There is, from my perspective, no excuse for such bad service. The only reason I gave it 3 stars is because the food is so good. But the service is so bad I don't think we will return. read more

We went to Kolam, a restaurant we have patronized numerous times in the past, for the "special" Fathers Day buffet. The restaurant was filled, but there was only one serving person who, despite frantically trying to seat people, bring them drinks, replenish the buffet, bring checks, etc., was completely unable to keep up. As a result, there was no chicken in the chicken tikka masala tray, no lamb in the lamb curry tray, and no calamari in the calamari tray. We had to wait at the buffet for clean plates to be brought out, and used plates sat unbussed on our table. I asked for a Sam Adams beer and was brought a Budweiser. The poor waitperson was hardly to blame for not being able to serve a room full of people, but the management deserves severe criticism for putting him in this position and for offering such a miserable dining experience. Previous experiences at this restaurant had been modestly better than adequate, but this was quite the letdown. read more

Hands down the best lunch buffet I have ever been to. The service was great (it seems other people during dinner have had issues). They brought naan (which was the only disappointing thing it was so stiff) and tandoori chicken to the table which I appreciated because it gave us time to think if we wanted to do drinks or anything. The amount of options they had was a perfect balance between enough so you aren't disappointed and not so many that there are subpar items. I know absolutely nothing about Indian food, but on a whim, my husband and I decided to try Kolam. We were really glad that we did! We started out with the vegetable samosas and they were fantastic--flaky pastry and delicious filling. Then I had the Chennai Kozhi Curry and my husband had the Chicken Jalfrezi. They were both incredibly flavorful, tender, and spicy. I was sad that I couldn't eat more. But also happy that I have leftovers to look forward to. The staff was very nice, attentive, and speedy. Kolam is a great place which serves great Indian food. I've been going there for sometime with my friends and family. I like the whole vibe of the place its got a very relaxing atmosphere. I wanted to give a review on my recent experience. when I went there with my family on a Friday night. we expected the restaurant like Kolam to be busy and it was around 7:30pm. if you've not made a reservation they will ask you to wait while they make a table ready for you. In my case that's exactly what happened. We walked in and were asked to wait. I understand its not a easy job to give your attention to all the customers you get on a busy Friday night. So we waited patiently for them to get us a table. We notice that the Waiter whose always at the bar was just talking to a lady. we couldn't help but overhear their conversation since they were very loud. That was when me and my husband asked the waiter about our table and he replied since you've not made a reservation you have to wait for some more time till we can give you a table. So we waited. Waiter and lady started to talk again. Made us wonder whether he was actually doing his job there or was just handling some personal business. About 8:00 pm a Waitress gets us a table. We forget about the wait and get on looking at the menu. From out table we raised our hand twice to get his attention but he kept on talking to the lady. Made us feel like they didn't want us there. It was around 15 minutes later he came up to us. 8:15 pm same bar Waiter talking to the lady at the bar comes to the table. He Asks what is your order? He was not only unfriendly but there was no greeting that happened that night. He didn't even ask us how we were doing? Not only was that rude but also shows how unprofessional Wait Staff that are currently working at Kolam. We ordered (MOTISAAG) which is an appetizer. We asked the Gentlemen if he could be kind enough to get that first on the table. Our Main course can come after. Not only he didn't write that down but memorized it. We wanted to make sure if he got our order right. He replies he's been doing the job for a long time and he doesn't need to write it down ( He was not polite.) Several minutes later another Waiter brings our Main course first, so asked him what had happened to (MOTISAAG) We wanted the appetizer first. Impolite waiter walks up and tells us arrogantly that we never ordered for an appetizer. what was meant to be a great night out for dinner with family turned out to be a total disaster. When we were leaving from the restaurant he didn't look at us, kept on talking to the lady. I would only go back to my Favorite Indian restaurant if there was any change with the management until than I will explore other Indian restaurants. read more

I live in Newtown, and Kolam has (until recently) always been my "go to" for Indian. The food is consistently excellent, in particular the lamb biryani (which is mysteriously always different, but always tasty), the vindaloo, and the samosas. However, I had a very negative Mother's Day dinner which was the last straw in a series of less-than-pleasant customer service experiences at Kolam. After being seated by a surly host with no greetng, we waited 1.5 hours to be served. In the meantime, bundle after bundle of takeout went out the door. The waiter/host did not smile, did not greet us, and snatched the menu out of my hands before I could speak. I empathize - Mothers Day is busy, however, we made reservations, you KNOW its gonna be busy -- that is how you make money -- suck it up!! Smile, apologize, and offer your hungry guests more than a 1/2 serving of papadum. Or warn them the kitchen is slow, and suggest they order an appetizer. (even better, offer them one on the house!) My advice - skip Kolam until they learn to appreciate and respect their customers. Owners -- don't be greedy. Take care of the customers in-house. I hate spending my heard-earned money and walking away feeling like I was a burden. FYI, our group was extremely polite -- we said nothing about the wait and were gracious -- my gripe is not with the slowness, but with rude treatment by the staff on this and other occasions. read more
