First time client, booked online for Shampoo and blow out because I had hand surgery and can't do my own hair. What a treat, I thought. Blowout is listed at $36+10% discount for new clients. Julie was lovely and did an excellent job - wish I could give her five stars. But when I went to pay, they charged me $40, and when I said no it was listed as $36 the woman at the front desk shrugged and told me it depends on hair length. Well that's not what it says on their website. Plus no 10% discount. I just didn't have any fight in me. But I won't go back. Sorry, Julie, you were excellent. Those stars are for you only. Mike is a master Colorist and stylist!!!! Because I'm in aquatics and fitness, I needed someone to really understand and care for my blonde hair, and do an easy, manageable haircut. The really nice woman at the reception desk was excited to send me to Mike after I asked for a senior colorist following my previous experiences at other salons. Mike gave me a thorough complimentary consultation, took the time to listen to my concerns, and explained my hair type and his ideas for my hair. I felt super at ease with him because he said things about my hair without me even saying anything! I love my new upgraded blonde and now I have the best haircut I've had in years! Mike was really efficient and stayed within the time frame I had mentioned for my visit- I was amazed at how fast his blowout was. I left the salon feeling like a blonde bombshell :) I could tell Mike is very experienced at what he does. He even mentioned he's been an international hair stylist and colorist for hair and fashion shows (so cool!) The salon is spacious, beautiful, and the location and hours (open late evening) are perfect for my work schedule. The shampoo assistant seemed to be new, a little less experienced, but sweet. I feel deceived and very disappointed after visiting this salon. I booked my appointment online, where it clearly states a full head of highlights is $160. Never does it say this is just a base price and that depending on your hair this may change. I show up to the salon not only to find my stylist double booked, but that my new base price is $260 because that's just what my hair needs. You are nickel and dimed for everything, down to the mix-ins they use in your hair dye. This review is for Nataline, who fixed a botched balayage from a different stylist. Nataline spent a long time listening to my concerns, asking questions, and offering suggestions for how to do the fix. I left with the color exactly how I wanted, my hair finally feeling soft again, and a beautiful style. I've seen lots of reviews where people go in for an ombre or balayage and instead get a full head of streaky highlights (that was my issue) ... skip the cheap deals and just book an appointment with Nataline! She only needed about 10 minutes to dry and curl my hair, but the style is still lasting, five hours later and after walking around the windy city for 2 hours. Unbelievable. I also commend Kolorbar for stepping up to the plate to fix my hair (at no charge) after I initially sent an email expressing my displeasure with the first highlights. I really encourage people who are dissatisfied with service/color to contact the owner and try to work something out before simply posting a negative review. I know we're all on a budget right now but save your money or find another place to go. Kolorbar is known for lower prices versus higher end salons in the area but when I brought in a photo of a cut and color I wanted and was quoted $450- this was a two step color process, mind you. Very basic, no highlights or anything. Double what I was expecting and estimated on their site. But the stylist just pulled the number out of her butt and called it a day. I asked for a one step color as an alternative and a haircut. Got left in the bowl with color on my head and neck craned while she cut TWO other clients hair then was charged $250 for a color and cut. No blow dry, no hair treatment. Nothing. Unheard of for Kolorbar. I paid roughly $125 for the same thing previously. Now, I wish I would have said something but paid and left to avoid any trouble. I had a stylist I loved at this Kolorbar but seemingly overnight the staff changed and it's a completely different vibe in there now. They even removed the walk in hair cut special. This is a review for one of the hairstylists at Kolorbar, Tanya Diez. She is a wonderful hair stylist and is the only person I trust with my hair. I had first tried another hairstylist at Kolorbar and wasn't impressed, but it's in a convenient location so I figured I'd give them another try, and requested a different stylist and luckily got Tanya. She did a great job trimming my extra long hair, she's not only a top notch stylist, but also does a good job listening to her clients for what they want done to their hair. The most recent appt I had with her I called Kolorbar and told the receptionist I wanted to see the stylist I always see, just like I always do, and they made an appt for me with someone else I'd never seen before! I was really surprised when I got to my appointment and they brought me to the wrong hairstylist, but luckily Tanya was there to fix the situation and was able to fit me into her schedule that day. The first appt I had with Tanya the shampoo girl forgot to turn on the heat for my deep conditioning treatment; I kept on telling the girl the heat was off but she didn't listen, and I was about to walk out of Kolorbar after she washed the conditioner out of my hair (I figured if they can't even deep condition my hair properly I didn't trust them to trim it) but Tanya came over and smoothed everything out and was so patient and professional I changed my mind and gave her a chance, and now am so glad I did! This review is specifically for Tanya Diez who works at Kolorbar. She is amazing and I highly recommend her!! I went for a bayalage today with a Groupon I had to try this salon for the first time. The salon is clean, nice, colorful, and the staff seemed overwhelming nice. I arrived at 245p and walked out a little after 6p, I felt bad since they were closing but they assured me I was okay :) June did my color and blow-dry. She's super nice, personable, funny, cares about her clients, and gave me a really nice caramel color. She made me feel very comfortable and cared after and wanted me to be happy the whole time. I'll probably be back in a few weeks for a slight toning since the color closer to the root was just slightly lighter than I'd hope but overall my hair looks and feels great, just the change I needed for spring! The overall blend is awesome. She really practices her technique, she works at 72nd Sundays and Mondays. I would definitely recommend her. read more

It was very noisy. I could barely hear the receptionist because the music (loud music from the nineties, 2000s, 2010s) was unnerving. The customer ahead of me was arguing about a dropped booking. They could not find her appointment. Finally, when she was done complaining and the receptionist told her to take a seat to wait for the manager, I was addressed although I stood there a good seven minutes before the receptionist took my name. I was concerned they would not know I was there and since I had not been there before and the customer stood in the way, I did not see the sign-in sheet until the customer finally sat down on a bench. I thought I would lose my appointment. I was told to wait even though I had made the appointment in advance. While waiting, I could hear people shouting over the loud music, trying to be heard. Wouldn't it make more sense for the music to be playing at a lower volume so that people are not shouting to be heard? After fifteen minutes of waiting at the bench at the front, I was taken to the back to wait for my hair to be washed. The stylist came by to do the consultation while I was seated in front of the sink waiting to be washed. This is unusual. Most of the time, you sit where the stylist is stationed at, and the stylist discusses with you how you want your hair to look, how short you want it to be, where she would cut in the back and sides, and what she would recommend, while you look into the mirror at their station. After my hair was washed, I was guided to sit down at the stylist's station which was under the music speaker in the ceiling. The music was so loud it was difficult to hear what the stylist was saying. I found it counter-productive and stressful that she was struggling to hear me and I was struggling to hear her. It did not help that the hair dryers were constantly blowing, fighting with the loud music. I had to shout practically, to be heard. It was not a peaceful experience. I would prefer to hear soft rock music, or some seventies or eighties light rock - but not so loud that I am struggling to have a conversation. Music should not mask a conversation. I am not sitting in a bar or a nightclub. This is a salon. There is a difference when I am trying to convey how I want my hair cut and have a conversation with the stylist, or the receptionist. There were elderly customers in the salon, and I could not understand how they could hear, when some elderly people have hearing issues. This is not a welcoming atmosphere to your clientele. Please turn the music down. Please play easy listening music on a lower volume. Please consider your elderly clientele as well as your over forty age group who might have stressful lives as it is and would prefer to walk into a peaceful "spa-like" environment where you feel refreshed and walk out more relaxed than you walked in. Tanya is particularly adept at creating red shades that last a long time, and she is well-matched to Kolorbar, which is one of the Upper West Side's luxury hair haunts with no attitude. Can't say enough about the people here or the location, which is about two blocks from all the restaurants along Columbus Avenue. A friend and I decided to try Kolorbar for a blowdry before a holiday party and yelp had a 50% off deal for new clients. Great! Right? No. We walked in at 5:00PM on a Wednesday and asked the receptionist about the deal. My impression was that her English was slightly poor so she went to ask her "manager" whom was taking care of another client (one of two in the salon). I provided my phone with the yelp deal pulled up and she was just not understanding, assuming I had already purchased something like a Groupon, and clearly getting impatient with me. Ultimately, equally frustrated, I explained that it's $30 for a walk-in blowdry as per their website and that 50% of that is $15. She scoffed at me and said "A blowdry for $15? Hah, no way" and turned around to continue working on the other client as if to imply the conversation is over. My friend and I walked out of there disgusted by the attitude. If we're misinterpreting the deal, then explain it to us what it really is and give us the opportunity to use it. OVERCHARGE - bait & switch. This business does not care about their customers, as was shown during my recent experience of booking $70 worth of services on their website (since I liked the atmosphere the 1st time I visited) only to be charged $115 at checkout. The receptionist, Rina, very rudely tried to tell me that it was my fault for not making it more clear to her that my appointment was made online and therefore she could do nothing to help me. She ultimately provided 3 different excuses to cover her faults, all of which were some form of either blaming the system being down or blaming me for not telling her explicitly that my appointment was made online, even though I clearly stated that I had an appointment. When I asked about the price difference, Rina said that I was charged their on-site prices but I was quoting their online prices. When I brought up the fact that I booked my appointment online and showed her my confirmation email directly from Kolorbar, she just shrugged her shoulders. To keep a VERY long story short, I attempted to work with her directly to lower the prices to no avail - continuously asking why she thought this was the best approach to treating someone who very clearly wanted to be a customer (because I DO like the stylists working here - which I showed by tipping them generously despite the high service fee) and she just said "sorry you can take it up with the credit card company" and left it at that. VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE ALL AROUND. WOULD 100% AVOID THIS ESTABLISHMENT AT ALL COSTS. read more

My overall experience at this location was horrible. I came in for a blow out. The man (don't remember his name, Latino) who was going to do my hair first off told me that I have greasy hair. I definitely do not have greasy hair...I have very thick curly hair and never has somebody said it is greasy. Then I had to wait with my hair in the sink for at least 10 minutes, while the man just walked around and acted like he's too good to wash hair. Then when he was drying my hair, he took way longer than anyone else that's ever done it, kept making me spin around in the chair and then when i asked him to do a middle part and I asked him nicely to fix it up a bit, he gave me the comb and said "here you do it, I don't know what you want" When it was time to pay, since I booked it online the price said $30...then the man came up to the register and said she needs to pay $40...they let me pay $30 but I will not be going back to this location ever again.
