Tried out this place tonight and was hoping for something good. Got my order to go. I understand that this is a small town and there are no other Japanese restaurants close by but for how expensive this place is the taste should match up. Chicken teriyaki does not taste like teriyaki. There was practically no sauce and no teriyaki flavor. My kids didn't even want to eat it and they love chicken teriyaki. Broccoli could've been cooked a bit more too. Portion size was great though! Sushi was definitely on the bland side. They need add a bit more fish or veggies in their rolls. Unagi sauce had a nasty after taste. Almost like a burnt taste. Spicy tuna was pretty good though. Miso soup tastes just like how Miso soup should taste. We came for lunch on a Sunday and were not disappointed. Prior to going I read some of the Yelp reviews and was mildly hesitant. But we were pleasantly surprised. This place has a clean and appealing aesthetic to it. The service was friendly and prompt, and the food was good. Is this the best, most amazing, unbelievable sushi you've ever had??? No. It's Fortuna. I really don't know why people complain about portion sizes at a sushi place. It's a roll. There are 8 pieces. There are always 6 or 8 pieces in a roll. How can that come as a surprise to people? As for price, it's right on par with sushi. Smaller rolls for $5-7, larger specialty rolls for $9-11. The fish was fresh and well prepared. Honestly, my biggest complaint around here is that there isn't more raw fish rolls on the menu. This is a Humboldt county thing I've discovered. There is way too much emphasis on tempura and katsu rather than sashimi. Do we really need everything fried people? IT'S SUSHI! Also, I prefer tea service; as in a pot of actual green tea. The tea here is served in a large mug and it's obviously some kind of cheaper green tea. Not a huge deal, but just a personal preference. I'll be going back. It's a decent place and it's closer than Eureka, or our previous favorite place - Sushi Spot in Arcata. read more

Finally, after a long weekend of motorcycling, all I wanted was to indulge in some of my favorite food in the world--sushi and sake. Kome fit the bill, by thankfully being open on Labor Day, and provided a great experience overall! Attentive and friendly staff, delicious and fun rolls, generous slabs of fish for nigiri-sushi, and well heated sake! The handkerchief wrapped around the bottle was greatly appreciated as it kept fingers from getting burned. ^^; On a note about the decor, I favored the very minimalist, chic look. Where other see blank walls, I see a contrast for the dark wood furniture and brilliant splashes of color from the plates in front of you. For such a chic atmosphere, I was surprised so see several patrons in very casual attire. The atmosphere is certainly comfortable enough for it, so I'm glad to see the locals are able to enjoy themselves in peace. All in all, I had a wonderful time, with reasonable prices, I would most definitely visit again if I were in the area. read more

Tonight I ate here for the first time with my husband. We ordered 3 rolls, 'the house roll' the 'the spicy tuna roll' and the 'tempura prawn roll'. We ordered a tempura appetizer and I ordered a hamachi hand roll. The tempura calamari was not bad but it was served with a beef broth for dipping (?). The rolls arrived and all three were deep fried, the entire roll coated in a light tempura. They were still warm from the fryer. All three plate were artfully dressed with a brown, very sugary, teriyaki type syrup and a Siracha mayonnaise. All three rolls tasted similar and were cooked through. The one thing that arrived raw was the hamachi hand roll and the very first bite contained a bone. I give these guys credit for opening a sushi joint in Fortuna and they obviously cater to clientele that prefers westernized plate of food, but deep frying everything is a bit too "safe" for what they are calling Japanese sushi. The food was very heavy for Japanese and the flavors were drown out by the syrup and mayo dressings. Dinner for 2 ran us over $50 and that is without drinks. i've been hearing that this is "the best" sushi restaurant in humboldt county. so this weekend we decided to give it a go. we sat down and i opened up the menu, and to my surprise, it is the exact sushi menu that gonsea has. (does anyone know if they are related?) my heart sank a little because i am not really a fan of the sushi there, but went ahead and ordered a few rolls. before i go any further, let me tell you that our waitress was a rockstar. we were seated next to a large party who started rearranging all of the tables. it was loud and kind of annoying, but our waitress swooped over and offered us a table on the other side. she then also let us know that the large party (it was about 15 people) just placed their order so there might be a little bit of a wait. although she did say she would try to get our order up quickly. and that she did. we ordered three rolls. spiderman, cherry blossom and a rainbow roll. the spiderman was my favorite out of the three, and the sushi was good. was it the best in humboldt county? not by a long shot. however, the service was. read more

Peaceful dining room, nice service. The SPECIAL on the board is the way to go! Busu Giri is like Hawaiian poke, big pile of great sashimi tuna, yummm. Then the special roll is the Korobi roll. Really great flavor combo, fresh. nice little list of sakis. The only very minor sad point for me was hot green tea came in a mug with a tea bag. Learned to love this place. The best Humboldt has to offer. Sweet employees are always knowledgable (which is huge with my gluten allergy-- they even give you gf soy sauce upon request!). The food is delicious and the atmosphere is pleasant. I had one unsavory experience once just because the waitress didn't seem to want to be there. She seemed fidgety, restless and bored. I don't know if I've been spoiled from authentic sushi places in the bay area, or if I have high standards in general, but this experience wasn't the best. Though, I suppose that it was good for the area. The fish itself was okay; better than grocery store sushi. I was surprised that they charged for miso as it's customary for miso soup to be complimentary with any order in most sushi places- this was the first one I'd been to that charged. The server did seem a bit irritable and exasperated when I asked for more water, but that wasn't the unpleasant part. The unpleasant part was how quickly the food was brought out and how rushed we felt. From experience, sushi that takes longer to prepare means higher quality. Also within two minutes of sitting down the server asked us what we wanted and we hadn't even gotten a chance to open the menus. Fortuna seems to love Kome, but I wasn't impressed. The decor is so nice, you can't even tell it used to be a Taco Bell! We had the chicken teriyaki roll and the Godzilla roll. I didn't get a chance to take a picture because they looked so good, and they tasted delicious! The staff there are all very friendly. I look forward to getting more of their types of sushi, it was hard to only pick a couple from the menu they all looked so good! I love that they have vegetarian and cooked chicken/shrimp sushi too, for those who are not fond of eating raw fish. Give it a try! read more

Had been here in past. The fish, the uni had always been fresh. Tonight was not a good experience. The butsgiri was meh, the California roll, had almost no bay shrimp in some pieces. The spider roll, maybe was spiderman roll, had a sour or spoiled taste, left almost entire roll. The uni was bitter. The tempura was awful, one piece eaten out of entire basket. The stomach ache, and awful experience of bad fish was not the birthday dinner I had hoped to treat myself to. $80 for gas station quality sushi is unacceptable. The wait staff was friendly, some were on their phones, not very professional. Kome you are off the list of acceptable sushi places in Humboldt. read more

It's not my first time here... but it's my first time writing a review. The previous two times that I remember coming here, it was pretty good... Or let's just say, at this point, acceptable. But tonight... terrible. I ordered a simple six piece sashimi dish. It was obviously prepared by an amateur sushi chef, because it was cut wrong, presented inappropriately and uneventful on the palate. So then I decided to order two tempura prawns... and they came out looking like somebody took part of the prawn and ate it themselves before battering, frying and serving it to me. I've never seen a prawn shaped like a french fry... what's up with that? Anyway . . . too bad because this is the closest sushi restaurant to my home and now I'll just have to make the (25 mile further) trek to Arcata to get satisfactory sushi when I crave it. Oh well.. bummer for me (once) for them (their future). Drive a half hour north to Sushi Spot or Tomo's. If you're heading south, sorry... but you'll have to go all the way to Petaluma to get any sort of genuine sushi (Sake107). read more

So dissapointed. Went here just now. There was only one server, but there was a busser helping her and there was only 6-7 tables some that were done. She took peoples orders that got there after us. We had to ask for menus. We waited 15 min before we got up to leave because no one woukd take our order we were hungry and tired of being ignored. I asked her nicely before that to take are order after 10 min of waiting. She said would be there soon, but continued to take care of everyone else. We told her we were leaving and she said "that is a good idea". Note we were calm, pleasant and polite. Why wasnt there a sorry or anything? They understaffed for the day after Thanksgiving and had a poorly trained server on. We like to come here when we visit, but not sure any more. I have never got up and left any where before because I was being commnicandted with and the server was better trained. Sushi is expensive and service should be netter. read more

My goodness, the rice was undercooked and doesn't have that stickiness and aroma. The rolls was even worse as it dumped in the same box with other rolls. The fish, blah. OMG so good. Totally epic sushi roll (got the Dragon roll)!! I am a local and wanted sushi bad, and took a chance on this place when I saw the open sign. I was very pleasantly surprised and impressed with my food. It was busy and one young man alone was answering the phone and taking phone orders, dealing with online orders, being the cashier, greeting customers, getting their to go bags together, taking in person to go orders, and doing a great job. Next night I actually went right back again bc dinner was so satisfying the previous evening. Again same thing: -good sushi roll (also ordered steamed gyoza n FYI they'll let u order gyoza half meat/half veg which was quite accommodating imho) -one young lady was running to do every single thing alone- from hosting to expeditor to waitressing to cashier.... but still got my order correct and fast and polite so I DEFINITELY TIPPED (even on a smaller to go order yes!! ) bc they obviously work very hard.
