My husband and I were looking for a turquoise conure and were skeptical of buying one at a bird shop but the bird was super healthy,loved, and taken care of ! there were 2 men at the counter and they were both very knowledgeable of birds and their needs, they recommended certain types of toys,feed,etc. We did purchase the bird about 6 months ago and she is happy and still doing well! :) when you purchase a bird they give you an envelope with everything you could possibly need to know about the bird and they gave us a card with vet info on it for yearly checkups. The man with dark curly hair and glasses has absolutely no people skills what-so-ever; he barely acknowledged me and my wife's existence as we patiently waited for someone to address us. He actually prioritized a phone call over walk-in patrons. Anyway, they boarded our parakeet over the weekend, and during our visit to pick up our bird -- we kindly asked the man with dark curly hair and glasses if he could please take our bird from their cage and place her in our carrier for us -- because we didn't want to risk our bird getting loose and flying around the store. After letting out a sigh -- he grabbed our bird and dropped her carelessly into our carrier, which it made a "thud" sound. We did not appreciate that at all. Our parakeet is considered family, but to him it was just a nuisance. This place needs to seriously work on their customer service skills -- as a former customer of this establishment, I did not feel welcomed (I actually never feel welcomed here), but how he handled our bird was unacceptable and probably why we would consider never coming back here. I rather rely on the kindness of a neighbor to watch our bird next time than bringing her to Kookaburra again. read more

I was looking to change the perch/toy setup for my African Grey's main cage and found this place through searching Yelp. They have a fantastic selection of toys, including puzzle/foraging toys which are perfect for keeping a big brain african grey entertained. The staff was pleasant and friendly, store was tidy, and all of their birds looked healthy and happy. Their prices aren't ridiculously overpriced like most chain pet stores. I absolutely loved it! I'm completely obsessed with birds and I have 5 parakeets but I got to hold a baby blue throated macaw and oh my gosh I wanted her so bad!!!! If only I had $7,000 . The woman there was really nice but we did get to experience the guy with dark curly hair and glasses and Im 14 and I was just saying I really wanted that macaw and he was telling me that it wasn't a good idea for me because I was going through too many changes in my life, even though I informed him I'm homeschooled and don't plan on going to college then he told me that's a bad thing too because birds need to learn to be independent. The store has really good supplies and has everything you need when you get your bird. There are flight cages, pellets, treats, perches, play-stands, toys, and even a couple bird you can buy like budgies and cockatiels. The staff member was nice and helped us look for what we needed. This bird store is really good and it met my expectations. If you're looking forward to buying or adopting a bird then you van find everything that you need there. Some things that are necessary for good bird care cant be found in normal pet stores like Petco and PetSmart can be found there including bird harnesses and foot toys. Im looking forward to visiting Dallas again and visiting Kookaburra again! read more

First, the store has a lot of great things for birds. If you can go in, buy what you need, and not talk to the owner, you're in great shape, but our experience with him was not pleasant. We were talking to a young boy who was holding a cockatiel, sharing some of our experience with our 19 year old cockatiel. We were having a great conversation, and the boy said the bird was too young to be sexed. We told the boy our vet had flipped our bird over and done a physical exam when he was young and had determined he was male. Well, the manager (or owner) was up in the balcony office and I guess he took great offense at that, because he looked over and said (exact quote), "That's witchcraft!" and proceeded to tell us all how it was impossible to tell the sex of a bird that way. Seriously, who hears a customer say something that they disagree with, and then publicly shames them in front of the entire store? While he may not have intended to shame, he could have nicely come downstairs and said something like, "I overheard you and wanted to say some people don't think you can tell the gender of a bird by physical examination" or something gentle like that. Sticking your head over the balcony and saying, "That's witchcraft" is rude at best, and shaming at worst. While he may be very knowledgeable about birds, I'm pretty sure the vet at the bird hospital is also knowledgeable and there must be differing opinions. Like I said, great supplies and lots of awesome birds to buy, but I would really prefer to spend my money where I won't be humiliated in public. read more

July 2020 update: We are still 100% positive about Kookaburra! We just had to board our two birds for a month due to emergency repairs in our home with construction & painting. We never once worried about the care they received; the daily videos really kept us informed, if not a little worried that the birds may just like Chris more than us (ha ha). I kennel my dog there regularly. You may wonder how a bird shop can function as a kennel, but it's the best experience for my dog. The advantage is they have a small kennel operation, so I know my dog is getting individualized attention. And the emails and picture they send prove it. They've also included an outside yard. The staff are wonderful and give personal attention. Most importantly, my dog sprints, SPRINTS, inside when I drop her off. That's all the proof I need. Okay, this review is long over due! When I first got my parrot, I didn't know a lot about nutrition and had a ton of questions. I went in to look around and a very friendly younger man answered all of my ANNOYING inquiries! Seriously, I followed this poor dude around asking (probably stupid) questions for hours and he was so polite, informative and knew his stuff. The lady who checked me out (owner, I think) gave me veterinary referrals and advice on switching my birds food the right way. Also worth mentioning is they have this cool section of toy 'pieces' you can buy (cheap) to build your own bird toys. And I also got a thank you (handwritten) letter in the mail and a coupon after my visit! They are awesome for new bird owners or veteran bird owners looking for a good, reliable shop. I found this gem last week and have already been back for a second time! It's definitely an experience; you walk in and are immediately greeted by a good 15 or so clan of birds in the middle of the store. If you're a bird person like me, then this is heaven. They are the goofiest creatures and are fascinating to watch. Kookaburra has a wide selection of toys, feed, cages---basically everything you'd need to care for your bird AND their prices are cheaper than Petsmart! I also appreciate the attention and time the employees give to each customer. It is totally worth the 20 minute drive from my house. If I ever need to board my baby, I will take them here. read more

This place is wonderful when it comes to the care of your feathered family member(s)! They offer a wide range of foods, toys and they do trims for claws, beaks and feathers. John is very knowledgeable about birds and I find myself learning a lot from him. I had shared some information about issus I was having with my cockatiel and he recommended a food to try as well as some extra care tips. I purchased the recommended food, followed his care instructions and I found I had a different bird on my hands. She became more active and the appearance of her feathers improved a lot! I had noticed my parakeets acting different than normal and asked John about it. He put my mind at ease by explaining why they were acting as they were and even recommend a toy that would help with some of the behavior. I purchased the toy and the love it!; I have purchased two and need to get another soon. Any time I take my "kids" in to get their claws trimmed, they are always handled with care and that's very important to me! I feel very comfortable with my birds in their hands. We first discovered Kookaburra Bird Shop about four and a half years ago, and since Then we have three wonderful Parrots added to our family. Each member of the staff have and are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. We recently boarded our Parrots, two Boxers and our bearded dragon with them, they were all taken care of with excellent care. I highly recommend them. The place is clean, the parrots are happy. I *would* recommend Kookaburra for pet boarding even though I'm not particularly fond of an employee there. Why? Because I get the sense that he is more of a pet person than a people person. The employees here really do put their heart into this business as I already stated. I would trust them with mine. ------------------------- Kookaburra you could have gotten 5 stars if you didn't have that pesky male employee that loves to breathe down my neck every time I come here. I have a large network of pet lovers in my circle & I've actually heard other people mock him...he makes us feel uncomfortable. Anyways, allow me to explain why I awarded 3 stars instead of 1. There are not enough exotic pet shops in Dallas, parrots included. It is so nice to be able to come here & hold a macaw. They are expensive...but when you're looking to purchase a pet that might very well outlive you - it's sort of an investment. Also - the employees *do* put their heart into this shop. It's clearly not for the $$$ as I can't see much of a profit being made off such a small niche as this. They know their stuff & can help you if you ever have any problems. read more

I love this place because they hold themselves to a very high standard, especially where the exotic bird community is concerned. They offer a variety of tutoring and training for owners and their pets to address behavioral issues and concerns, ( ive never used these services but i like that they're available) they have an incredible selection of toys and accessories, and they carry all the right food at reasonable prices. they're also involved with local parrot rescue and adoption facilities which i think is great!. My parrot goes here semi-regularly to get his nails and beak trimmed and these guys are exceptional at handling him. we've also boarded our eclectus here for about a week and were extremely pleased with it. they took great care to see that he was well fed and happy. occasionally they have deals and specials for routine trimming, toys or food depending on the time of year so be sure to ask whats available. their experience with parrots shows, check them out! read more
