I don't usually buy dogs from pet stores as I usually rescue/adopt them. I also rarely go to the Eastside, but in this day we went and encountered the most precious litter. With our dog passing away 2 years ago there was a clone of him sitting there (but already sold). My heart sank as I never thought I'd see another. To our surprise his brother sat by the glass and crossed his front paws just like our previous dog. Again my heart sank. With a bunch of thinking and going back and forth for a couple hours we made the purchase. The staff were extremely nice, able to answer all my questions with ease. Unfortunately, he wasn't and to come home with us until his vet appointment. We were able to come in as often as we wanted and hold him until the day he could come home. I didn't know I was being helped by the owner/wife during this time. She was extremely sweet, and that made me feel better about purchasing from a store. The dogs areas were constantly cleaned by staff, they wouldn't handle them until they were able to clean and sanitize to ensure safety. That also made me alot more comfortable. Absolutely heartbreaking. Puppies kept all day in tiny glass boxes, looking weak and miserable, with no space, no comfort, and barely any water. It was disturbing to see and felt incredibly cruel. I left feeling sick and would never support this place. read more

Went there with my family, we checked out the jackson chameleons and seen that one of them have been struggling for the past 3 minutes to get back up. I've previously owned chameleons in the past for a few years and with the glass cage that they're in, except for the ceiling and the background - it's a little sad to see the chameleon struggle upside down like that. I went to one of the workers and she stated that they were just 'like that and could get back up' - as if she wouldn't care enough to help the chameleon if i hadn't pointed it out. i stated that the chameleon was struggling and she repeated and said thank you in an annoyed expression. my family and i agree that this was in frustration and i feel that was extremely disrespectful - especially when it comes to just help a chameleon with struggling after laughing around with her coworkers. i hope for hospitality for the animals, and i hope the workers feel good about being there. thank you! read more

Not really sure how I feel about this place. It's located inside of a mall, and they always have puppies for sale... always! One Halloween we decided to come to the mall for their weekly farmers market but there wasn't any for this week since it was a holiday. Instead we went to the pet store since nothing else was happening to look around. There was 3 little chiweenies on display for $400. My husband thought it was a great deal and a good idea to show me the puppies. There was 2 boys and 1 girl. They were nice to let you hold them if you're interested. Mind you I held my dog for an hour deciding if I wanted her. Great job on patience as I was deciding on this puppy for on hour at the least. I asked if the ears would go up since she's half chihuahua they said no, but they did go up in a month or so. Purchasing a puppy came with a wellness exam right after in Kaneohe. I don't remember getting anything else from them other than that... like a bag of puppy food at least. Anyway, puppies give you a lot of love and joy, but also a lot of heartache. The downfall of buying from a pet store is that you don't know any medical history of the parents and if they had any prior Illness and diseases which most people won't even think about when they're looking at the puppies at the store. Fast forward to the future - my pup has been diagnosed with masses, kidney stones, and diabetes which ended up in the thousands out of pocket.. like think of a value of a cheap Toyota. Although we hit a few bumps in the road with this purchase of ours ... I wouldn't love her any less than I do. Came in on 10/09 for my birthday just to look and ended up getting a bunny as a birthday gift; I asked to see the bunnies and the first one i held was jumpy, the second one i held was very calm and relaxed while the third bunny was shaking in my arms, so i went with the 2nd bunny it's been a few days and she's been great! Eating very well lots of Timothy hay with her rabbit mix and getting fresh water every so often. She does poop in her cage as I set it as a litter box with the cage door open and after she's finished she hops right out and starts hopping all over as her "exercise". She loves when I brush her fur, as it makes her fall asleep. She is not only adorable but a smart bunny. I'm home visiting- I don't live here anymore. Me and my friend went to the mall to kill time. I couldn't believe this pet store still exists. Why? Because shelters are full of unwanted dogs. Young puppies should be with their moms until at least 14 weeks. Not 8 weeks all alone without their mom. ASPCA estimates 390,000 dogs are euthanized each year in shelters across the 50 states. Sad and lonely unsocialized puppies in plexiglass boxes with dirty bowls & no water. Filthy store. Miserable animals. This place supports puppy mills to breed dogs to death so humans can get rich. I couldn't even look at the other animals I felt so sick. Read up on puppy mills and backyard breeders. It's a horrible industry and I'm shocked this pet store endorses them. Adopt from a shelter. Research reputable & responsible breeders. Not mills. I fostered 2 Persian Cats- both "retired" breeders from a cat mill. Dumped at the shelter because they got to old to have litters. The girl was 4 lbs & the boy 5 lbs. Sick beyond words. They had lived in wire cages and were forced to breed for 8 years. They had never been on a cat bed, had a blanket, a cat tree or had affection shown to them. They were matted, dirty and extremely underweight. Their kittens sold for $2100.00 a piece. Sick cat's breeding sick kittens. That's the game of pet mills. Puppy, cat, bird, etc doesn't matter, breeding sick animals to make money. The Persians are both healthy and happy now. Came in to get a puppy for Christmas. When talking to the staff they were super happy to give me all information on the Cocker Spaniel mix I was interested in getting, and let me hold her and spend as much time with her before taking her home. I was able to take her home two days later after her vet appointment. They made sure she was healthy enough to come home, and gave me the record from her vet appointment. Her first visit I took her to upon bringing her home was fully covered, as well as a package of the food she's been eating and a potty pad for the car ride home. My daughter, Michelle R and myself decided to go inside here and check out all the cute animals. There were two cute puppies that were already sold but were so adorable. I came in here to grab Duke a couple of snacks. My daughter and I always think of him and we normally like the cute sayings on the snacks. I got one that said "Woof" and "Spoiled" which he is. Lol! Puppy mill action. I bought my chihuahua from this place, it was a spur of the moment choice. I saw her and I knew I couldn't leave her behind. I didn't know this then but she was really sick. I utilized their free checkup with haiku vet and the folks over there gave her a clean bill of health within 24 hours of my purchase. They have an agreement with koolau pets, im betting haiku vet is telling koolau pets new pet owners that their animals are healthy, even though they aren't. A week later my 1 month old puppy dying. She was lethargic, not eating and bloated, her gums were pale and we took her to the Vca where she needed a $3500 blood transfusion that ultimately saved her life. She had a tick borne illness that was likely passed down to her from her mother at birth. The illness made her anemic and weak. Once they gave her the transfusion and did a lot of tests they gave her 2 rounds of different anti-biotics. Almost 2 years later and she's healthy and thriving, but sad because not everyone can afford costly medical expenses. Would be nice to know what you're getting before you buy. They acquire the animals from backyard breeders. If you're looking to purchase an animal, avoid this place, avoid any pet store really and adopt. read more

My husband and I are very pro adopt don't shop but we came in randomly just to see and saw bunnies. There was a whole enclosure that were bunnies from the same litter and the enclosure beside them were more bunnies but I'm not too sure if they were siblings. We were told they're 5 1/2 weeks old, and we noticed they were all sleepy except for one, she was playing and running all over her siblings haha. but that's not unusual considering they're daytime sleepers. When we chose 2 rabbits to hold and get to know, one had snot on her nose and I asked a worker if it was, but we decided to brush it off because we had seen her drinking water, we just assumed that it was wet from that. We were wrong. And the other, she was sleepy and just very chill. We assumed it was normal since all her other siblings were sleeping too. We were helped by a new employee who was very kind and didn't mind waiting with us and assisting us. That's where we give the star. Unfortunately the happiness we had was short lived, along with one of our new bunnies. They were taken home on Saturday. Eating a bit, drinking a bit, but there was no sign of gut movement as they weren't pooping. We thought they hadn't eaten or drank much due to stress of moving to a new place. If you're a rabbit owner you know that rabbits are very sensitive and can slip into G.I. Stasis very quickly. Within 12-24 hours of not eating/pooping it can be fatal. Monday we noticed the more active rabbit grinding her teeth. Alarmed, we started to observe her and how loud her grinding would get. She would sit in this hunched position and grind her teeth. It started to get to the point where she would be doing that for 5-10 minutes straight. The "chill" bunny stayed that way, but it was lethargy. Barely moved or looked around, wasn't that interested in exploring. We hadn't seen them eat since Sunday night and that was only a few pieces of hay. Tuesday rolls around and still not eating/drinking, still not pooping. We make our way down to our primary vet and he gives them antibiotics and critical care due to an upper respiratory infection that they both have. Wednesday comes and the chill bunny is having seizures. We bring her in to the vet again but that was the last time we got to see her alive. She was too far in G.I. Stasis to be saved, and the infection got to her brain causing neurological damage before the antibiotics could start to help. We're still currently doing our best with her sister, trying our hardest to keep her alive. She's still grinding her teeth and refusing to eat and drink. We are syringe feeding her and continuing her medications. Hopefully we aren't too late pushing critical care. TLDR: Bought 2 baby bunnies here and they were already sick. Unfortunately breeders don't care enough to keep their litters healthy, and pet stores don't care enough to send sick bunnies back to be nurtured. We're pretty sure they both would have died a lot earlier if they weren't in our care. ADOPT. DON'T SHOP. A lot of these animals you see in some pet stores are already sick and you'll spend thousands of dollars trying to save their lives. OTHER FYI: They do have a 3 day return/exchange if the pet is sick, but if you're a pet parent it's not about "exchanging". Hard to explain but IYKYK. read more

Yikes...I'd heard good things about this store, since it's one of the original pet stores on Oahu. There were two young employees at the register; I got the sense that they don't know a lot about fish, nor did they do the walk of death prior to the store opening. Half the tanks had at least one dead fish; the gourami and clown loach tanks had multiple casualties, and the clowns had very obvious ich, probably from being stressed or too cold. I'd planned to get a bunch of Kuhli loaches because they're the cheapest I've seen, but they also had ich. I'd rather pay more and get my things from people that provide minimal care for their livestock. read more

Love coming here with my family. This is where we bought our dog, Penny from about 2yrs ago. They do a great job displaying these pets. When I was searching for our new family member, I came upon 2 dogs (Chihuahua, Papillon, and Tibetan Spaniel mix breeds). I had a hard time choosing between the 2, but the awesome staff there allowed me to spend a little personal time with each of them in their little secret room that they have within the wall shelf across the cashiers. These allowed me to pick out Penny. I remember bringing them home and surprising my kids when they got outta school. Penny ended up growing up to be an amaaaazing dog. She listens, plays fetch (even spitting the tennis ball back at us), catches, pad trained, etc. Looking back, I wished I just bought both dogs because I was told they were sisters, but it's too late now. This pet store is located in the Windward Mall near Panda Express. The staff were helpful, patient, and informational. Not sure if they still do it, but when I bought Penny, it included a discount for any merchandise (or toy??) and 1 free visit to the Haiku veternarian. Stores is filthyyy. Have visited this place for many years and it has remained dirty in each visit. The last straw was seeing the worker put dirty Jackson chameleon habitat items on the baby bird tanks. It appears that they only hire very young individuals. This is great to give students a job but they also seem to be VERY poorly trained. Many of the other negative reviews are accurate. I would suggest supporting big chain companies than a local company that does a poor job, especially when it comes to living animals. We will no longer support this store. read more

I was walking around the mall and I walked in to see the animals. This was on September 2nd. I left and I can't stop thinking of all the horrible things that I saw. It was so dirty there. The rabbit cage had cockroaches all in it. They were in between the cages but they also were in the rabbit's cage. The rabbit's water bowl looked like it hadn't been cleaned out because there was a dead bug floating in it. I came into the store like an hour after it opened so its not like it was at the end of the day. The cages near that cage were empty but not cleaned out at all so im sure this even attracts the cockroaches. There was a guinea pig in a cage with absolutely nothing in it but one bowl of water. No little house nothing. It looked so sad and scared. It was all so pitiful. One of the fish tanks in the back had the water moving so fast in it that the fish were getting hit with the artificial plants that are in the tank. The employees were just standing around. One guy was like honestly so lost you could tell he didn't even know what to do so he just would be standing in one spot moving a box like 2 inches for no reason. One puppy wanted to play so bad and he was crying the whole time in the cage because he didn't want to be in there. I doubt they even get exercise or played with the puppy. Saw a lot of reviews from people saying they bought sick pets from this store, and this picture truly shows why! As a pet store, one thing is providing the opportunity for us to purchase pets and bring them home, but in the mean time, how you care for them as a store truly matters! These birds are drinking water that has poop all in there. I know it's not always easy to manage, but this definitely shows that the water don't get changed out often enough and there were only 4-5 love birds in this cage. This is like an oasis in the middle of a shopping mall! Sometimes I like to imagine that I own a pet - but then reality hits and I think about buying pet food, cleaning up the mess, taking a pet to the doctor, etc. We always had a dog at home which someone else (usually mom) always took care of. When I had a bunny, he was easier to care for than a dog. Then he crossed the Rainbow Bridge... That's why I'm happy enough to come to this pet store and look at the fish, bunnies, and puppies... I'll pass on the birds and kitties... Sometimes they have chinchillas, tortoises, Jackson chameleons, and guinea pigs! This shop is well stocked with supplies, toys, and food! Plants for the fish tank! This location has plants for my fresh water guppies that I can never seem to grow. The staff was helpful enough to let me know that you can place the plant into a bucked full of water and give it lots of sunlight. He mentioned that it would grow wild and although I didn't stop him for sharing that information with me because I live in a high rise it was good information. And I'm always able to find what I need from this location. Not to mention sometimes they have really adorable pets available. I was also able to find food for some ducks that I enjoy feeding. Not gonna mention where since the ducks aren't mines. But I do make the effort to buy they right type of food for the ducks which is probably more important. :-) We've always has friendly staff and I love the location in the mall. read more

Whenever I'm at Windward Mall, I stop by this store to check out the animals. They always have cute puppies on display. Some of the other animals that they sell are rabbits, guinea pigs, parrots, and fishes. They also sell food, toys, and other pet paraphernalia. The store is a decent size, clean, and bright. The staff is always friendly and asking if you need assistance. I just found that most things in this store was overpriced compared to other pet supply stores. read more

OVERCROWDED BIRD CAGES!! DISEASED ANIMALS!! I don't know how a pet store can justify cramming as many birds into a cage in order to make a profit and not feed bad. Look at my photo of the parakeets stuffed in a cage without fresh air circulation! I counted over 30 birds in the photo and this is only one of many other multi-bird cages crammed with more birds than what is considered humane. Mostly ALL the parakeets in this picture were sleeping and not active....hmmm, I wonder why? I've seen a bunch of parakeets in another store all kept in a group, but they were active, happy, and seemed alive, compared to this bunch at Koolau Pets. The difference was those other birds were not crammed together in a glass case, had adequate air circulation and more space to run around. Take a look at my other photo of DISEASED guinea pigs. At first, we thought they were hairless guinea pigs, then we took a closer look and realized they were losing all their fur and had tumors in their bodies. Is it because this store crowds animals together? Even the puppies are in enclosed glass cases. SHAME ON YOU KOOLAU PETS. You treat your animals like commodities without caring for their basic needs; especially fresh circulating air. Horrible. read more

Walked in here just to browse. How did I walk out with an expensive french bull dog? I just fell in love instantly! And the salesman here made our puppy buying experience so effortless. The salesman was knowledgeable regarding our puppy's breed as french bulldogs require more work. The saddest thing was not being able to purchase both puppies, I really hated separating them. One of the reasons I gave this place a 4 star rather than 5 is because I wasn't too fond of the puppies placement. They peed and pooped in the same place that they slept in. I immediately showered our pup when she came home. Nonetheless we were happy to add female French bull dog to our family. Her name is Lexi and she is doing great. I don't like the idea of having to pay for a puppy but sometimes, happiness comes with a price. Koolau will pay for the first puppy vaccines and wellness exam. They also give you a complimentary 3 day puppy exam at Haiku Vet Clinic (see my review). Anything medically needed for the puppy will be paid for by Koolau. Our puppy probably had a tummy virus because she had 2 weeks of runny, loose stool. The vet prescribed an anti-biotic that didn't seem to help. We went through boiled chicken with rice, and yogurt diet. The vet also gave us a low bland bag of dog food. These were all paid for by Koolau, so I'm grateful for that. Not only do they carry out a lot of different breeds of puppies as you can see in previous posts, they carry top of the line doggy necessities. For instance, they have this doggy pad that - oh my god - made pad training SO easy. Petco and petsmart don't even sell some of the items this store sells. The kids enjoy walking through and looking at all the animals, reptiles, and fish. Staff is usually friendly and helpful. My only disappointment is that they sell puppies here. Koolau Pets has a great selection of pets if your family is looking for a parrot, I saw beautiful clutch of African Grey parrot babies (they were so young and cute) for purchase, or puppies, from pedigree to poi this is the place to go! The salespersons are so helpful. I almost wanted to get a Frenchie puppy! I got my dog food, leashes (a nice selection of all types and colors), even fish pellets for my catfish, all there! Yes, you can go the big box pet stores, but you get the individual attention here, reminds me of the pets stores we visited every weekend as a child! I love shopping at the open market and always stroll by to see the puppies, pick up a toy for the dogs, admire the cuddly bunnies in the window, stroll along the calm relaxing fish tanks for a great assortment of fish! But today I seen someone purchase a gray bunny and it made me so sick. WHY? You see, we were waitlisted for weeks now for that exact color bunny. 4 WEEKS. We were told by your staff member that we would be called when one is available. Oh and please don't tell me that customer who purchased the gray bunny today was waitlisted before me, I already know thats not true. Obviously selling a bunny is not a huge profit for you but for us, it was all we wanted as a companion for our white bunny ( which we purchased from you). It was very busy in the store so I waited and called that very night and spoke to a lady who had no compassion, not a care as I explained my story. Here's her reply... " Oh, we NEVER look in the WAITLIST book. We have no time for that. Bunny's sell so fast here, it's ALWAYS first come first served". So Really? Then WHY BOTHER ASKING US FOR OUR INFO? Why tell customers they will be waitlisted and called when all along you had no intent of calling us? Why give people false hope? That's so not Pono and so pilau. Of course I'm certain that if we were waitlisted for $1,400.00 terrier/. shih tzu mix pup or a $3,000.00 German Shepard, you'd have called us... INSTANTLY . But, it was a rabbit. A simple gray fluffy bunny for $69.00. I do wish you'd return to your humble beginnings, when you treated customers like family. We were there with you all along, but sadly not anymore. Koolau Pets has the most variety of pets I've seen compared to places like petco. They have baby pigs, puppies, guinea pigs, rabbits, fish/opae'ula, tortoises, birds, chameleons and crickets. Sometimes they even have axolotls. The workers and owners are friendly as well. Their prices for pet food and gear are kind of expensive, but other than that everything is great. We adopted two baby bunnies from there and the most recent one we adopted we had purchased him once he arrived from the breeder. We took him home that day and noticed he had an eye infection so we brought him back to Koolau pets three days later and they kept him for a week in order to clear up the eye infection. Just wanted to say thank you to the owners for being so nice during our visits and helping to heal our bunny. read more

As much as I would like to support pet shops, they sell puppies here and I am an avid pet rescue person. I've adopted all my pets and Petco across the street supports the Hawaiian Humane Society and has frequent adoptions which Koolau should do, it would bring in more business. And it SMELLS the minute you walk in which questions me on how well they take care of their pets. Product wise, it's a very small store and overpriced. I will go in to say Hi to the puppies because I feel sorry for them, but will never buy from here. read more

If you're interested in sick puppies that's going to cost you thousands of dollars to keep them alive, THIS IS YOUR PLACE! We got our Staffordshire/Pitbull puppy from them in April when he was 8 weeks old. It came with a free checkup at Haiku Vet Clinic that you have to use within the week. When I took our puppy to be seen they checked his stool and an overall exam and deemed him "healthy". Later that night, there's blood on his puppy pad. I couldn't tell if it was from his urine or his butt so we took him back to the Vet the next morning, with me missing out on work, and they found high level of bacteria in his stool...but yet the day before found nothing? The Pet store covered the visit and medication and I chose to go to a new vet after that. It seemed as if the clinic and the pet store are working together to making you believe you're getting a healthy puppy when you're not when you use the "free vet appt". Fast forward 8 weeks later, my puppy started having lameness in his hind legs. I took him to VCA ER and he was diagnosed with Discospondylitis, a bacteria infection in his spine. They tested his urine and blood to see where the infection stemmed from but both tests came out clear. I wouldn't be surprised if he got the infection from his mom at birth at the puppy mills the store buys from. Now he has to do monthly X-ray exams to ensure his spine is healing. His road to recovery will be long and expensive. If you're reading all the bad reviews about sick puppies after you've already got yours (like I did) GET PET INSURANCE! Lots of parakeets to choose from, which is why we came in. Most stuff is WAY overpriced. THREE young employees squeezed into the cashier area (one girl was even sitting down) playing with their phones and talking, offering no welcome or help to anyone while lots of water bowls needed cleaning and food bowls needed filling. Bad service. Time to hire a secret shopper. read more
