I don't think that five stars is enough for how much I love Kopps frozen custard. Even though this is not their original location, I do love the cow statues here and there is plenty of parking available. Their cheeseburger with the works is absolutely the best thing ever, and my friend recently told me that she gets it with blue cheese and a few other things, and I had no idea how many possibilities I was missing out on. I love their burgers so much, that I actually had to come back the next day to try it her way and it was great. I am also obsessed with all their custard. I decided to get the almond boy sundae last time, and that came with coconut, almonds, and hot, chocolate drizzle, and it was as good as it sounded. read more

Kopp's Frozen Custard is a Milwaukee Classic. I have been coming here since I was a kid since I grew up in Milwaukee. They have a flavor of the day everyday. I either get the flavor of the day or I get the usual vanilla and chocolate. The hamburgers are also a crowd pleaser! It is so juicy and I love the grilled onions. There is no seating indoors, but there are benches outdoors. It's great to sit there when the weather is nice. The place is usually busy after a game, during the weekends and when it is warm out, but the service is quick! read more

Forgot how big their burgers are. They also have excellent onion rings. The prices are a bit higher than similar restaurants in this space but it was still pretty good. We went for lunch on a Saturday so it was pretty busy. You can tell the staff were trying to get orders out as fast as they could but it still was a hefty wait time. Cute tiered outdoor seating but not much in the way of tables. We took ours to go and had at the beer garden down the road. All in all, good experience all things considered. read more

The burger was very large. I'm a pretty big guy and can tell you I should have had the single. It was very good, added bacon... because why not?? I went cherry shake this time. One of my go to's! We were walking around downtown Milwaukee after the Bucks game and stopped by a cheese shop. There, I asked one of the ladies behind the checkout about the best custard spots in town. With full confidence, she told me to drive 10 minutes down the road to Kopp's, and that's exactly what I did. It's located in Glendale, which has a small-town feel. The parking lot is iconic--full of cow statues which make for great pictures. It was a little crowded when we walked in, but there was barely a line since it was well-staffed. We were able to place our order right away. There were a few flavors to choose from including chocolate and vanilla (which they have every day) along with 2 special flavors. I think one of the special flavors was mint, and I can't remember the second one. Either way, I always go with classic vanilla to decide if it's really worth it. Turns out it was fabulous. It was rich, creamy, fresh, and not too sweet. The vanilla flavor was strong as well. I tried chocolate from my boyfriend which wasn't too sweet either, but I definitely preferred the vanilla (no surprises there). Not only is the custard is super duper rich, but portions are quite generous. I couldn't even finish the smallest size. Choose wisely and avoid waste! We heard about Kopp's having the best custard in the city and we made it a priority to stop by. When we arrived a little after noon on Friday, we found the place almost completely packed to the gills, filled with people waiting to pick up food. The inside is pretty sparse and empty, with only hightop tables without seats along the outer edges. The center has a giant spoon and maraschino cherry statue as a focal point, with an unbroken line of counters with registers and pickup area to complete the space. If you only order custard and/or fountain drinks, you can basically get in and out within a couple of minutes as there's a service counter dedicated solely for those orders. If you order food, be prepared to wait. They do allow you to get custard immediately after your order if you prefer which helps to alleviate any hunger pangs. 1 Scoop Dish, Cookies N Cream, in a Cup ($3.50) - Now this is a proper custard. In Michigan, I'm used to places piping homemade custard out right from the machine into a cup. At Kopp's (which I've learned is common in Milwaukee), the custard is piped into large pails standing in a freezer. The employees then mix in the other ingredients and scoop the custard into cups/cones for you. The temperature of the freezers is set perfectly - the custard doesn't harden into a more ice cream like consistency. Instead, it's smoothly creamy and starts melting a bit along the edges as you eat. As you dig your spoon into the custard and pull out, smooth crags develop upwards along the surface. The custard texture is basically perfect. The sweetness, on the other hand, is a bit too much for me, but I'm not sure if it's from the added Oreo or the base custard. Kopp's is quite generous with the Oreo; you rarely get a bite without at least one piece of crunchy cookie inside. Through the Oreo, you can still taste the rich milkiness of the custard in the background. The custard comes in a 5oz container, piled up over the top, but still seems to be a bit less custard than how much competitors give. It's served with a piece of Oreo cookie on one side and a fan wafer on the other side. The fan wafer is flaky with multiple layers that come apart. It adds a very nice crisp element to the custard. (5/5) Double Cheeseburger, The Works ($9.25) - The burger took a bit over 20 minutes to come out. The first thing I noted was just how large the burger is in terms of width. It seems to be at least 5 inches wide, which is way bigger than a typical burger. This allows the ingredients to fit neatly in between the bun and as you eat, nothing ends up spilling out of the sides. The bun is slightly toasted, with the most obvious portions being near the edges due to the sauces and cheese softening the center. On top of the bun they place a pickle slice for some reason. At first I thought it was a mistake, but I see other pictures with it there. I guess it's just a quirky thing that Kopp's does. The beef patties here aren't too dense and are kind of on the drier side. Based on the texture and flavor they feel commercially made, like a typical fast food patty. They have a uniform thickness and a well defined perimeter. On top of each patty is a slice of melted cheese, adding creaminess and additional fatty moisture. I ordered the burger with The Works, which includes ketchup, mustard, pickle relish, and fried onions. The ketchup, mustard, and relish are pretty standard, adding sweetness and tanginess. The fried onions are browned in oil, not breaded and deep fried as I expected. They are sliced and add a bit of sweet freshness, without any raw onion bite. There is more than enough moisture from the sauces and cheese to counteract the dry patties. Still, as I was eating the burger I felt like there was just something missing. I can't think of what that would be, but it lingered in my mind the entire time I was eating. (3/5) The custard? Amazing. The burgers? Serviceable, but there's better elsewhere. Go here for the custard and you won't be disappointed. There's a reason this place is a Milwaukee institution. Bathrooms - Both men's and women's rooms. I love frozen custard and as a recent transplant to the Midwest, I've been reveling in the opportunities to enjoy it more as it's not widely available on the East Coast. I was visiting Milwaukee for a day, and all the guides said you have to go to Kopp's! I got there in the mid-afternoon and it was busy; you can tell it's always busy. They have plenty of parking, some outdoor seating, and a bunch of cows in the back. Everyone there was working hard. I ended up just ordering a basic vanilla cone (you can't go wrong with vanilla) and the person at the register charged me for a small but gave me a medium. If you've ever had a Kopps burger you know, once in a blue moon you get a craving for it. Stopped in to satisfy that urge. My go to order here: cheeseburger with the works, onion rings and a vanilla shake. But saw they had eggnog ice cream when i was there and it was around the holidays so why not! Very basic fast food option but now I understand why people keep saying you need to try custard when you're in Wisconsin. The dairy is so good, the end products come out delicious too. Lots of custard options, but they also have food options like burgers, fries, and onion rings. Our eyes were way bigger than our stomachs but if you don't get a shake or float, you're missing out. The specials are pretty amazing and they've even got menus that show how they build them out (for example: a turtle fudge roll has multiple scoops of custard, peanuts, cherries). Very cool institution in Milwaukee with the best custard I have ever had hands down! The little cone/cookie deal they crowned it with is also extraordinary, overall the creamiest most delectable custard I have ever put in my mouth. On to the burger, I am a big eater and I was full half way through the double cheeseburger, I think I would have enjoyed the single more, double is just not necessary. This is an historic burger and custard stand located in three sites in and around Milwaukee, but specifically this one in a northern suburb called Glendale. The Milwaukee brewer game had recently ended, so many people were her after the game for food and cups and cones of custard. I ordered an original curler with all the standard fixings and hard it cut in half to share with my spouse. It was as good as I remembered it from my my former days living here. Order from a cashier and wait for the food to be prepared, and brought to a pick up counter for delivery to you. There are no inside seats to sit by, just cocktail tables to stand by and wait for your number to be called or standing and eating inside. There are bleacher like concrete areas to sit outside and eat with your friends and friends to be. The major drawback of the facility is filthy bathrooms that appeared to have not been cleaned all day. read more

As kids we would go to the Kopps for their burgers as a special treat. Only occasionally during visits to the Midwest the last few decades have I had their burgers and custard since I moved out of state. While out and about on a recent weekend we stopped in with family members. We needed some lunch and this spot was nearby. There was a fairly big crowd in the lobby so it took a bit to get our order but not too bad. I did try their cheeseburger with fried onions (glad I am back in Wisconsin where this is a common addition) and it was very good. I forgot how big the burgers were. My wife got a fish sandwich and gave it a thumbs up. The best was the malt we got which was a marshmallow & cherry combo - delicious and decadent. It's now become a necessity for me to stop at Kopp's whenever I'm passing through Milwaukee. On a recent trip to Chicago, I inducted another friend into the Kopp's cult. My favorite thing to get is still the vanilla custard with hot fudge. The fresh custard taste is unbeatable and their hot fudge is gooey and chocolatey without being waxing like some other places. My friend tried the S'mores Sundae and was hooked. Not only was it delicious but it was cute too! Only downfall is that the seating is very limited and fills up quickly. Some folks weren't even eating custard or food, just hanging out. Feels a little awkward to be scarfing down food while others just watch. My boyfriend Nathan and I came to Kopps not too long ago to try the burgers and onion rings when we were visiting family in Wisconsin, and we ended up getting custard as well since it was recommended to us. The burgers could have been a little more put together, but overall they were tasty. The onions rings were crispy and still warm, and the custard stood out, it was much better than I anticipated. However, one thing tainted our experience here. As my boyfriend and I were leaving, we noticed a rodent crawling along the ceiling area by the counter with the microphones, and when I looked closer it was a mouse. I was mortified and I pointed it out to my boyfriend, so we went up to the counter to let a manager know, and it did not seem to be a rare occurrence. I really enjoyed this custard spot. Custard is much easier on my stomach then regular ice cream so finding this spot while traveling was well appreciated. The parking lot was completely full. I had to sit and wait for someone to come out so that I could find parking. There is no drive thru do you have to go in. The parking lot situation should've been an indicator for what was going on inside. The inside was wall to wall full of people. There was barely room to maneuver to the line for food or the line for just custard. There was absolutely no social distancing. I tried to step to side to get pictures as best I could. This location could do a better job of handling guests. Maybe have someone at door and only allow so many patrons on at a time. Then they could call numbers out when orders are ready. A Milwaukee landmark, it seems like half of the entire North Shore can be found on here on any given weekend day, three-quarters if it's a warm, sunny day! I've been coming here as long as I can remember and have yet to have a bad experience. If you have out of town guests, this is really the place to bring them to grab a great burger and even better ice cream. On our recent visit, I scored a Cherry Chocolate Godiva Shake--so so good, plus a cheeseburger with ketchup. Gotta keep it simple, stupid! For the uninitiated, there isn't any "seating" inside really to be had, you will have to stand at one of the small, round tables or head outside to sit on the steps if you want to scarf down your tasty food before it gets cold (speaking from experience, the fries at Kopp's have been scientifically-proven to be tastier on the car ride home than once you get inside).
