I began going to Kopp's when the name was Milky Way (late 1960s or early 1970s). It was a hang out for my high school classmates and me. To this day, I have never eaten any food, anywhere that is better than Kopp's custard. The texture is sublime. It's creamy, fatty, sweet, incredibly consistent, fresh, flavorful. You cannot beat it!!! I have gone twice in one ore than once. [on a scale of 1-5, the custard gets a 6 and I've never said that about any food before.] Now about the buns. I was warned, thank goodness, so I was emotionally prepared for my first visit in quite a while (I don't live in Milwaukee anymore, just visiting). The new buns stink. They're doughy, it's a mouthful. I used to LOVE those thin buns - all I need is a very thin barrier between my hand and the patty - I loved those thin flat buns. This thing I got yesterday - no Bueno. I posted something about that on FB last night. I've already gotten 7 people who Commented on my post that they feel the same. Place was decently cleaned. Burgers were good 7/10, I just got the Double cheeseburger forgot to add tomato, onions, and lettuce felt like it would've been better if I've order with more condiments. I have not been to Kopp's since roughly 2008 after a moving away from the Milwaukee area. Took my son there after him Milwaukee Buck's game and have to tell you it was even better than what I remembered (and that was pretty good). That place is so well staffed, everybody at their station everybody doing a great job. Reminds me very much of Portillo's, but they have been around way longer. My only it regret was ordering a double cheeseburger which are huge (and I have a pretty big appetite). I was barely able to polish it off. Love love love this place! Upon entering, it was kind of confusing which line you order from. I believe the left line is for custards and a few other things. The right side is for grill items (burgers etc) and shakes/sundaes. Once you get passed that, it's smooth sailing. The staff are super helpful and patient. Don't let the lines scare you away. While it may seem long, they work super fast. Their burgers are huge! Not thick but large in circumference. It's the cleanest burger I've ever eaten. There's no lingering after tastes or anything! The fries were okay, nothing special. The onion rings were super crispy and a tiny bit oily but still good. The custard is to die for. Be sure to check their website before you go. They have chocolate and vanilla everyday but they usually have two or three specialty flavors. We had Tiramisu, Grizzly Bear, Midnight Chocolate Cake, and Vanilla. Just a head up, one scoop in a waffle cone is ginormous! Pace yourself! It's definitely worth the $3. Side note, there's no indoor seating, only sitting outside on the patio steps or near the cow statues. I didn't stay in Wisconsin for long but this place has my heart! There are a handful of ways to end the best evenings in Wisconsin and frozen custard at Kopp's should be included in all of them. It is quintessential. Don't let the long lines of spring and summer intimidate you - it is well worth it. We arrived at around 9pm on a spring night and the line was out of the door into the parking lot, but the wait for us to get to the counter was maybe 20 minutes - I've waited longer for less. The maple syrup and pancakes flavor of the day is what brought us here. We got a taste and knew we needed it; we ended up bringing a pint home. Now, I know the picture doesn't look like much, but don't be fooled. Because folded into this magic are fluffy slightly chewy pancake pieces with the maple syrup flavor clear and perfect. I wasn't a huge fan then, but it grew on me faster than a zit on a teenager the night before Prom. It's every bit as delicious as my favorite location in the southwest suburbs of Milwaukee. I couldn't love Kopp's any more, and when visiting Milly Wore Kay, you simply must visit both Leon's and Kopp's so you can weigh in on the age-old rivalry between two of the best dessert spots imaginable - and cheapest and most generous too. Philly's rival neon-lit cheesecakes both taste like dog crap, but here, the two rival custard stands are beyond perfect. They're some of the best ice cream products in the country - if not the very best. It's extraordinarily busy and the parking lot is an utter nightmare. As oppose to an udder nightmare, which would make it very cow-unfriendly. Really though, it's a far worse parking lot than the other location in the SW burbs. Getting in and out can be stressful. Try not to get run down when you're walking across it and try not to smash into any idiots when you're backing out. Definitely one of the trickiest parking lots in the region that I found. Tons of cute people come here and lots of families as well, and it's always busy all the time whenever it's open. I recommend skipping the noms. Their food is mediocre and all of the fancy ice cream concoctions are just okay, but not really worth the hype. However the custard - and I'm talking about just a basic custard - will rock your world, as it's life-changing and spectacular. I know I said it before but let me state it again anyway. What you have to understand is that Milwaukee custard is the greatest on the planet. Detroit and Minneapolis and Chicago and some other towns have some pretty good custard - so does Rochester and buffalo. Cleveland as well. But damn, Milwaukee is head and shoulders above everybody else. It is the gold standard. It is off the charts. Milwaukee Custard is better than soft serve ice cream by a mile - and tastier than frozen yogurt and gelato as well, unless the gelato is in Italy. So here we have the second-best stand for custard in the best city for custard in the whole world. So obviously then you need to get down here and try this custard and be amazed. It really is that good. It's worth the hype and it's worth your time and it's worth coming out of your way for. Try both locations. You will not be disappointed. Both make equally phenomenal products. It's just a little harder to get in and out of this location. Okay, a lot harder. But Barbie says she likes it a lot harder, so. Also as a bonus - lots of cute people working here, and the other location too - but unfortunately not all of them are friendly, and in fact a lot of them are not. But it does get very busy in here and they're probably on minimum wage so I'm not going to get mad about it. And don't forget to try the eternal rival Leon's, too - for shakes as well. Between the two, I give Leon's the crown but Kopp's is so good that in any other city in the US, it'd be the best ice cream place by a mile. Growing up in Green Bay this has a very nostalgic taste of the old school Storheims custard and burger joint. Burgers that require two hands in standing room only. The place was definitely busy and our wait was about 15 minutes for food. Hubby and I weren't a huge fan of the fries but would love to go back and try the onion rings. We added everything to our cheeseburger but think it could do without lettuce and tomato. Otherwise good value and good food. read more

Not sure why I havent written a review for Kopps yet - I've been going here since I was a child! The custard is amazing. It's really my reason to go here, although the burgers are pretty tasty, too. It can really be a zoo in here if you are trying to get anything other than ice cream in a bowl or cone (you have to order in a separate line for things like burgers, fries, or sundaes). The PA system also leaves a bit to be desired, sometimes it is hard to here what number they are calling. I'd also love for the speakers to be outside, too, so if you are waiting for your food outdoors you'd be able to hear it. Minor quibbles, though. The custard itself is SUPER creamy and delicious. My favorite flavor is red raspberry, although even just straight up vanilla is so good. They rotate though flavors of the day and have way less repeats and more original flavors vs, say, Culvers. There are 3 locations around town and this one is the closest to me, so I frequent it the most now! read more

Only tried the frozen custard but the texture was superb! 2 scoops was overflowing my cone so I had to eat it quick. I chose the caramel pecan flavor as they only have chocolate, vanilla and 2 daily flavors. The pecans were all throughout and overall would recommend stopping here for the custard. read more

Best custard ever!! Be sure to get it in a waffle cone to maximize enjoyment. They rotate flavors every day so you can scope the options out ahead of time online (or not since all their flavors have been amazing so far). They give you massive scoops or you can get pints to go. Lines are always a bit long but completely worth it. Inside, there are 2 lines -- one for just custard and one for both custard/burgers. No space inside to sit and eat but there are some concrete steps/structures right outside to sit on. I don't have a ton of custard experiences to compare Kopps to, so keep that in mind, but, while the custard was good, the operation of the place was chaos. I'm visiting from another city and had no idea where to order. There were signs indicating where lines should form, but there wasn't really a line and there were a lot of people waiting for food so it was hard to know who was waiting to get food and who was waiting to order. We didn't order burgers, just custard, and I'm glad because I was finished with my custard before people who ordered food had even received it. It was a nice treat for sure, but the overall experience was kind of chaotic. It's been 2 decades since I've been in Milwaukee.... so naturally we HAD to go to Kopp's. It's a true Milwaukee staple that just can't be missed. With hamburgers as big as a pancake, what's not to like? Super hot fries. And good grief the custard! And if you don't know what custard is, then this is definitely a not miss experience. Be prepared for a serious wait... we came on a Sunday at 4pm and good grief the line. But definitely worth it. Hands down the GREATEST Custard/ Ice Cream category you WILL FIND IN Milwaukee followed by Leon's and Purple Door trailing them. Upon first walking in you realize this is a twist (being indoors) from the traditional 50's outdoor walk up ice cream stands of the 1950's being this is Wisconsin it's a smart idea for all year long. You will see a theme of stainless steel everything upon observation I felt this gave off a very clean and pristine vibe. Most likely you will have to wait in line depending on the time you go as this place can get INCREDIBLY BUSY at times (5:30-8:30). Once you get to the counter you will be greeted by someone wearing a white dress shirt, black hat and a black bow tie. After placing your order, the person will hand it to you right away if you are in the custard line or give you a ticket with a number if you are in the fountain line getting a burger, fries or any fancy fountain order. NOTE these are two different lines areas for this reason. I have been going here since I was a kid. This is where my love of ice cream/custard started. They offer 4 different flavors each day vanilla, chocolate and 2 "flavors of the day". The custard is the freshest you can find anywhere in the world. It is constantly coming out of the machine and various ingredients get added at that point and then more get added when you get a scoop. The custard is divine with the perfect amount of Madagascar vanilla laced in the vanilla based flavors while on the other hand the chocolate based flavors have a sweeter Swiss note. Kopps uses the top notch highest quality of ingredients they don't skimp either. They put deliciousness, decadence, creamy, crunch and the sweet into each scoop as Regardless of which flavor you choose, it simply can't be beat. On a side note I have had EVERY vanilla based flavor they offer throughout the years (I know it sounds crazy). From the once a year flavors to the rotational flavors you can't go wrong and with a price point of $2.90 with tax for a single scoop you can't go wrong. I typically get the jumbo buffalo chicken sandwich which is my favorite thing of any restaurant that offers the same sandwich.The chicken is juicy and plump, hot sauce and bleu cheese are both quality and meld into each other to perfection add in the crunch from the celery and you have a great sandwich. The burger with the works or any creation you make too your liking will be spectacular as well. The only criticism I do have is that I wish they would upgrade the bun to a Brioche bun lighter, airy with the kiss of butter is far superior then the current bun that is used. On a hot summer night it's great to sit on the concrete slab that is speckled with crushed silver and glass or stroll in the back parking and take pictures or just view the statues of the cows. The Greenfield location 76th and Layton. Take in the beautiful waterfall and blue colored courtyard at night sit on a bench with a delicious shake or burger in hand. Or stroll through the small sculpture courtyard area adjacent to the main building. The Brookfield location offers up a different vibe. This location has pink and turquoise interior with a decent sized seating area off to the side. If they ever make a mistake they more then make up for it. My final conclusion the custard is out of this world. The burgers are excellent, the bun needs work. You can't go wrong here at this gem of a burger and custard/ice cream restaurant. read more
