Korma Sutra is Overland Park's most fun and most tasty Indian restaurant. I've been for dinner before, but I went for the lunch buffet with my little sister. The vegetarian options here are great: half the buffet is vegetarian. I ended up getting a mix of curries, chana masala, korma, and more. The taste is quite authentic, and reminds me of Houston's finest little India spots, but with a bit more butter and a bit more cream in all the food. The food is not as spicy as I wish it were, and doesn't have a spicy chutney option in the buffet line, but that's probably the only downside of this affordable lunch buffet. I can't emphasize how fun of an experience this place is. The owner of the restaurant claps his hands and chants "Happy Happy," interacts with every customer in a way that isn't annoying but rather quite charming, and feeds customers waiting in line with vegetarian samples that he grabs from the buffet line or from the kitchen. The mango drinks are free, the desert comes around on a toothpick and is free, and even his elementary-school-age daughter gets in on restaurant experience by refilling your water. I distinctly remember my first dinner experience here, worried that every free sample brought out would be another line item on my final bill. Nope. Just a cool restaurant owner trying to provide a differentiated Indian dining experience by being a total goofball. And this time at lunch a year later? The inside is fashioned with traditional Indian decor to give it an authentic look. SERVICE: The one minor downside to this place was the service proved to be somewhat slow. All the staff were very friendly, but it took a long time to get food or drink refills. FOOD: As one might hope this is where Korma Sutra really shines. Lamb vindaloo is my favorite dish, and theirs was the spicy, tender fare I remembered having nearly a year before. The garlic naan was baked well, and even their chai (which was complimentary) was really good. VALUE: Korma Sutra slightly excels here, too. We used to eat here when this place was Flavor of India. Since we always enjoyed the food that they served, we were hoping for just a new name. Will say the restaurant looks brighter and updated on the inside, inviting. And it was good to see one person I remembered from the old place. We arrived after 11:00 am opening. Lots of people, but no one was eating because the buffet food wasn't out yet. Once a few dishes were put out, the line was long and I waited to help myself. I would like to note that none of the patrons were Indian, Flavor of India attracted many Indian patrons. Not that other ethnicities can't enjoy Indian food. Just find it interesting that not one diner was Indian. I tried a little of everything offered. That said, was not impressed. Tandoori chicken was very dry. Everything else was bland. And please quit pushing drinks on me that I don't want. In fact, back away from the table. Would like to have conversation with my husband. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PLACE. When you first walk in you are greeted by a man. I believe he is the owner of the restaurant and he loves to joke around. He cares about each and every one of his customers and is the icing on top to each dining experience. I was searching for this restaurant for a long time, I used to frequent their location on metcalf but I am glad I found them again. I love the mango drink that they have I could drink it all day long. I usually go for the common dish the chicken marsala, but I have had the goat and lamb. Everything is good you can't go wrong with any dish. There are also fried little dumplings that the owner gave me upon walking in and they are so tasty, I would've never guessed it was a vegetable. This experience won't be for everyone. The owner is a little out there. The day that we stopped in he was wearing a balloon on his ear and saying random things to people like, "don't cry, be happy." He reminds me of a character that you'd see on Seinfeld. I found him amusing, but I could see by the look on other customers faces that they were annoyed. He kind of just throws extra food on your plate. Several people (like myself) probably visited his restaurant when it was on Metcalf and remember him from that location. Anyway. It's a solid place to go for Indian food. They food is tasty and you get free treats at the end (mango lassi and some other frozen creamy item). They also wash your hands for you at the table. Me and my wife were really excited to go to this place since it has such a great review. It has good parking option and pretty spacious inside, they give free tea, lassi and pakora when you take a seat. Tea and pakora was really good, lassi not so much (skip it). Then this guy comes with balloon on his ears saying stuff which is hard to understand he tries to crack jokes but speaks over you through out the time you are trying to order. Aloo tikki we ordered did not have flavor and was under cooked. Mulgawtany soup which literary means pepper water in Tamil had no pepper‍ then we got to main goat curry and dal makhani. Curry was literally a tomato can sauce. My parents would have walked out at the first taste and goat wasn't cooked enough. How do you do that, you just have to keep it as long as you can since it doesn't get tough if you overcook. Dal makhani tasted alright but the dal was under cooked. Kitchen staff here is def in rush to somewhere. At the end the guy with the balloon got kulfi and 2 glasses of mango lassi without asking and said you should finish this. And the outrageous part is you pay a bill with no items mentioned on the bill so you don't know what you are paying for, was the last kulfi and lassi charged? We'll never no. Crazy crazy crazy. Saw so many things that made me laugh out loud, the antics of the owner running around with a huge smile on his face- very memorable. Great place to cheer up if you're having a bad day! Warning, we saw one poor man get the "birthday" treatment and it was definitely designed to embarrass! He came out with balloons stuck to his ears (like giant mouse ears) and was clicking kitchen tongs like castanets while shouting 'happy happy birthday". The food was great. I had with me two friends who had never ventured to try Indian food before,and I took a big risk taking them to a place I'd never been to myself! All went well. They loved the mango lassi (who doesn't?) and happily tried portions of pretty much everything on the buffet. The naan bread was awesome. The owner brought out a unending bowl of it right at the beginning and kept refilling it! Oh my! Then came a few "must try" samplers from the kitchen. Wow.... I've never left a buffet with take-out leftovers, that was neat. I will say this, I've taken some Indian food cooking classes and learned that most Indian dishes aren't this rich, or creamed. I find it delicious either way, but this is not 100% authentic if that if what you are looking for try Touch Of Asia on 105th (I have it on very good authority their dishes are much more traditional). The only reason I'm not giving it a full 5 stars is because it's gotten so expensive since I can't afford to eat it anymore! My husband and I went there for lunch and with tip we spent $50! No drink - just two entrees and naan. We knew it may be a little higher but for lunch we didn't expect it to be full price! No wonder it wasn't busy! The buffet was so incredible and sad that Covid killed it. The two women servers waited on four tables repeatedly and refused to come to my table or take my order. The balloon head man who works the cash register finally came and took my order. I am not sure why the wait staff refused to serve me, all I can think is that they didn't like my tattoos. It was very obvious as they were wiping off plates and waiting on the other tables. While the one lady did drop off my meal she never came back. No one routinely checked on me. I was not afforded the same service as everyone else in the restaurant. An unusual pungent aroma and taste was found in the dish, may be from the oil they have used. Veg Korma : Same unusual pungent aroma and taste was found even in this dish, may be from the oil they have used. Mint Nan : Was just ok, very fluffy and artificial. It just looked like nan from " heat and eat pack". The reason we visit restaurants is just to have fresh food and get rid of "ready to cook foods". What they are doing is unfair. Korma Sutra always satisfies my desire for curry. It is a small hole in the wall, with a lively owner and a decadent lunch buffet. Their lunch buffet costs around $ 11 which is very cheap for all the food you get, they give you delicious naan bread (and will refill it unless you tell them to stop), chai, and mango lassi. As well as all the curries which include butter chicken, tiki masala, goat curry, lentil curry and their signature korma sutra which has potato and is a personal favorite. A warning: you may have to wait especially around the busy lunch hour. On my last visit the line was out the door and I witnessed 6 sad people walk away because they didn't want to wait. If I have to rate at least one star, the only reason, the young 10-12 year old gentleman that sat us at a table. He was the only one on staff that seemed to be hospitable. After being seated, we were Ignored for at least 30min before we looked around and in seeing 4 other tables around us that were all waiting for either food or to be waited on, we were up and headed to find another restaurant for dinner. Favorite Indian Restaurant I've ever been to. The owner is so attentive, and wonderfully weird (see previous reviews re: his ear balloon). I can't express how much I love this place! The food is delicious. They continually serve you warm naan (bread), and the owner visits every table with little extras. We bring our one year old and the owner every time serves him a little plate that's not spicy just for him! He never charges extra for this. One time we got there 10 minutes before they opened. The owner came out to our car with an appetizer and said it would be just a few more minutes (which we knew because we were early!) We couldn't believe such extravagant service! We were visiting from out of town and looking for a spot near our hotel to grab lunch. Found this place via Yelp. Two of the server/hosts were quite the character, but it was such a fun atmosphere. It was like we were visiting their home for lunch (except paying for it, LOL). So I got the lunch buffet, and my friend got the chicken vindaloo, super spicy please, with garlic naan. Lunch buffet came with regular naan served to the table, a mango lassi, a hot chai tea (looks like coffee or hot chocolate), and a frozen dessert. And even though my friend didn't get the buffet, they included him on all the buffet extras. My friend's chicken vindaloo was followed by a lady who brought a basin for him to wash his hands. He had to rub (what was it?) a piece of lime on his hands and then she poured water over his hands and handed him a towel. Arrived at a less crowded place, the one who greeted us made a joke we didn't get at first but had a good laugh after. They gave us a free appetizer and the food was served maybe around 25 mins. They mixed up our order so that was a bit annoying at first but then they gave us cute ice cream dessert , just tiny ones but it was delicious. And the owner offered us a lassi to go cups so I think that changed everything. I don't know if they do that to others as well but that was nice so I am giving them a 5 insted of 4 rating. First of all I have never felt more welcome in any other restaurant in Kansas City, If you like to be pampered this is your place. I had my 6 yr old grandson with me and the owner spoiled him by bringing him kid friendly things. If he didn't like what was brought he would go back and bring something else out. All the staff were attentive and we never had to ask for a thing. The food was delicious my grandson's order was too spicy so they had another less spicy plate made instantly. They even brought out the wash basin and washed our hands at the table. This was a very humbling experience. I will diffinantly be going back. I could not thank the owner enough when leaving.
