We've been customers since 1979. We live in an area with a high water table, there's almost always some water in the basement and in the basements of everyone near us. It's not a lot, from a 1/4" to moist concrete. There's a sump pump there so it doesn't get too bad. So you can imagine our surprise when on the 26th, of March, the tech showed up, for a routine service, and informed us that he wouldn't service it because some oil might, possibly, fall on the ground, get swept up by the sump pump and then contaminate the yard. I offered to place a plastic sheet down, but that was rejected. Now we have to wait until the basement is completely dry to make an appointment. On the bright side, he did come on time but sat in his truck for 25 minutes before emerging. Then, after turning off the boiler, he forgot to turn it back on! We awoke the next morning without heat or hot water! To be fair, this is not typical for this company. Their service people are generally good, with a few exceptions but we're not happy with the way they run the company. Our dilemma is; if the boiler goes out and there's water in the basement will they not fix it? We were warned that if that were to come and find water there, "there would be a serious conversation". The same person said that they have this new policy because they were worried about possible electrocution! Not sure what we have a "service" contract for. Confused and frustrated. PS They should inform the customer if they've changed their policy. We had changed our plans to be home for them, all for nothing. read more

Linnell came to the house, and I have to say that I have never seen a more pleasant, courteous, and professional technician. Provided service with a smile and got us up and running quickly. Kosco (HOP Energy) actually provides very good service, fast deliveries and superior customer service. Our recent interaction with Debbie resolved a billing issue very efficiently. She was quite affable and quickly emailed us an entire document outlining our historic bill payments. I know there are a lot of people who don't like Kosco but in 15 years I've never had a problem. The only peculiar thing involves branding and corporate structure. Specifically, it is difficult for the consumer to disentangle the HOP Energy name from the Kosco name. I don't know why this is the case but suspect it is related to the legal aspects of the corporate structure and in particular, numerous acquisitions. read more

I wrote a comment last month but I see that it disappeared. I think that if I have to pay a $118.00 fee to get a contract for a discount cap on my estimated seasonal 600 gallons of heating oil is no deal at all. The first year was great, but this second year, you know that the honeymoon is over. Its like going to a store and giving them a $10.00 dollar fee to get $8.00 off.... NEVER USE KOSCO/HOP. UNETHICAL BUSINESS PRACTICES. I would like to warn my neighbors about Kosco/HOP Fuel Oil Company. They are unethical and do not provide essential customer service. I joined them thru the Mid Hudson Fuel Co-op last year. I was initially pleased with the discounted Fuel prices thru the Co-op. Dispute 1: The Co-op did not choose Kosco/Hop as a partner this year, so KOSCO DECEPTIVELY PRE-EMPTED THE CO-OPs CUSTOMERS. They sent out an early email for discount fuel oil pricing. Many customers like myself were duped into thinking they were rejoining the Co-op. Sadly, that was not the case. Dispute 2: I had paid for and not received maintenance service for my Heating Oil system last year. I said I wanted to squeeze it in before the next contract began. They made me wait a month, and finally sent a guy. The guy took one look and said "your oil tank is bad," and left. I RECEIVED NONE OF THE SERVICE I HAD PAID FOR. Nor any discounts on parts and labor that were about to become necessary. Dispute 3. I called and emailed and called and emailed numerous times for a repair estimate. IN SIX WEEKS I DID NOT RECEIVE A RESPONSE. Dispute 4. I finally reached someone today, who was finally available for my call. Strangely it was exactly 1 day after my service contract for parts and labor expired. They refused to refund my service contract saying, "Well, you had the service available to you for a year." BUT IF THEY DON'T RESPOND TO REQUESTS FOR SERVICE FOR WEEKS AT A TIME, DID I REALLY HAVE SERVICE? Dispute 5. I told them I was switching to another fuel system, in no small part because of their atrociously neglectful service. THEY REFUSED TO REFUND MY PREPAID MONEY FOR 10 MONTHS, nearly $1400, until next May. They didn't even try to justify it, other than saying, "You signed the contract." Kosco Heritage is deceitful and does not respond to service calls for weeks. Avoid at all costs. Rub sticks together for heat if you have to, just don't use these guys. read more

I had a replacement boiler installed in 2022. Due to a faulty installation verified by their technician on the service call, it kept sending heat even when the thermostats were off! This happened during a heatwave! They did reverse some charges but not all and did initially insist on a charge for what they call "travel time" for the technician, to fix their mistake! This review has been modified, due to them reaching out and the matter being resolved. Just hope this problem does not repeat itself. read more

She managed to get the same technician who had come out recently. His name is Jay V. and arrived at 9:30, way before schedule. Honesty is always the best quality and that's the service I received. We were surprised and disappointed at KHE HOP's failure to provide emergency services. My business partner were on the phone and on emails with their sales rep, and we signed up for oil service at Kingston house we are renovating. Just a few days after starting the service, the boiler suddenly stopped working. Since the temperature was expected to go down to 20 degrees that night, losing all heat and having the pipes freeze was a real possibility. My partner was on site and called HOP immediately. I was at work and not able to take calls until my shift ended. HOP staff told her that only I, as the person who signed up for the account, was able to request emergency services. Apparently, even though the salesperson who had been in all the conversations with both of us was next to them in the office, they were unable to override their protocol. (Who else would request an emergency service call for a property beside an owner or manager?) I have been using Kosco for several year, with C.O.D delivery's. But last year I signed up for the contract service. This was the worst thing I did, because it cost me an extra $300 for the year. They paint the picture very pretty and tell you that you don't have to worry about anything and that would included automatically fill of your tank. But what they don't tell you is how they have you in a lock in on charging the highest price per gallon. That being said they literally charged me $2.49 cents for all of the deliverys for that year. So what i recommend is to ue local companys. Like COD oil, I just saved $20. read more

KoscoHeritage is now owned by Hop Energy. We were customers for about 8 years until last year when we found Hop to overcharge on everything. A 45 minute service call was $300. They call it flat rate. That would have been at the most $90 with AAA Fuel and about the same with Brit and Graf. We cancelled our contract in June, in writing, and they still continue to deliver oil. Their goal is not service it's to buy the competition and force the small guy out. read more

What a sham! I recently bought a house in Catskill and needed to find an oil company. I checked out a few companies and decided to go with these guys. Setting up the account was easy and the gentleman helping was great. They needed to come and inspect before the first delivery. They guy shows up and amazingly tells me that I need a whole new oil tank and line. I am not an HVAC/Heating Oil specialist, but I am very competent with most home construction projects. He gave a few weak reasons and then said I had to get all new. So, the fact that it is operating well and has been for the past several years means nothing? He gave no alternatives that might be more cost efficient. What a farce. Be careful using them. They will take advantage if you don't know much about home repairs. read more

I have been very happy with Kosco and have used them for over 20 years. We purchased a furnace from them as well and have been very happy with it. We have kept a service contract with includes an annual cleaning and tune up. Every year they have replaced this filter, and this year the technician (who seems very competent) informed us that they no longer supply filters... I called Kosco and was informed that it was a new policy. I was not informed of this change. He said that the technicians brought filters in the past as a "courtesy", which I highly doubt. Also, it is "too much trouble" to keep track of filter types (which is certainly on my record as filters were brought every year), keep the appropriate filter in stock, and on the truck for the service call Wow, too much trouble... I think this penny pinching change is very bad policy. I am quite disturbed. read more

They charged us $6,23 per gallon for oil, NYS ave. is $4.80! we are seniors and cannot pay this crazy bill.. we have been customers for 12 years and this is how they treat us... When i called about the bill they said we should have been on their plan, they said they send notices, we never got them.. My daughter paid yesterday $4.19 a gallon.. If there was an option for zero or minus, I would award that totally negative rating for the totally negative non-service I have received since signing up for their fixed rate plan through the mid Hudson Co-Op, through a Seniors group. All my initial requests for delivery were ignored. This began at end of July. Finally, in late October, I received a call back and they said my fuel tanks (in cellar) needed to be inspected. I said fine and a man showed up before business hours and not when it was agreed but okay, he went down to basement and came back to my front door, and announced "we can't deliver oil to you. There is oil leaking on your basement floor and puddling in the corner. You have to buy new tanks before we would deliver." I had two more fuel tank companies evaluate my tanks, and neither found any oil leaking or on the floor of the basement, My longtime plumber examined and he saw no oil leaking or on floor of the basement. The tanks are old and I was open to replacing them. They saw slight deterioration at one valve and an old tiny stain on floor (not from recent years and I have owned this home for 40 years. NO ONE SAID I HAD ANY CURRENT LEAK OR LIKELIHOOD OF LEAKS. I reported this to the good folks at the Seniors group and the mid-Hudson fuel coop. A pleasant gentleman from Kosco itself then made an appointment and appeared and also saw no leak or oil on the floor, or risk of leak and said he would "Go to bat" for me at the company. he called the next day and said the dispatcher would not agree to deliver and honor their agreement for my fixed rate which was for a new customer at $2.44 for first fill, fixed $2.74 after for the year. Unless I buy new tanks. This very pleasant man did try to be helpful and said he would suggest I buy one larger tank from them instead of the two smaller ones I had, and they offer a $500 discount and he would try to get me zero percent financing. He would call me back . I have never heard from him again. So now I am stuck with prices that have risen read more

I have been asking them to pick up their tank for more than four weeks with no response. With this company, the customer is never right. Had a full service plan and it was changed to a basic plan without us knowing and of course it was our fault. Worked out a deal to pay more to upgrade back to a full service plan and less than 2 weeks later, the terms of the agreement were changed and now they want to inspect my furnace cause it is 10 years old to determine eligibility for a full service plan. Of course they play dumb about the deal we made 2 weeks earlier. The only ones who have touched my furnace over the last 10 years is Heritage and every year they clean, service and evaluate the furnace, including last month and now they want to inspect it for eligibility. What the? Update December 2016: Had to get Heritage to come out after the furnace stopped working. This was during one of the coldest days of the winter. I was at work when the technician showed but my daughter was home. I called around 6 am and the tech finally showed around 10 am. My Daughter reported to me that the tech worked on the furnace than left saying he would return. The tech did not return. As soon as I had a chance I called Heritage to get an update on my furnace and to my amazement, was told by the office that the heat was on. I told them that it was not on per my daughter. Belittling me in the process, they insisted it was on. I than contacted my daughter who sent me a picture of the disassembled furnace motor. I called back heritage and again had to argue with them that I had no heat. That was just unbelievable to me, they were rude on top of being wrong. Well after 2 days of no heat and a new motor and a relay, heritage is now saying that we have to hire an electrician, that we have a problem with the house wiring. My house and furnace is 11 years old and Heritage are the ones to work on anything in my house. Who you think screwed my furnace up? Update February 2018: switched to Bottini. They had a technician service my furnace and that was it, absolutely no problems. Technician reported that there was an eye sensor that was not clean which I think is the thing that Heritage Energy missed. Under Heritage we had issues for 10 years from furnace turning off multiple times a year to billing nightmares and as soon as I switch to another company, zero problems. September update: I see that Cosco and Heritage made a merger and that Cosco-Heritage is keeping all of Heritage's workers. That means the company will have the same inept and rude management and office staff. I thank God I'm not with them anymore. read more

If you're in the market for an oil company that is reliable, has a servicing plan, and an excellent reputation, look no further than KOSCO. I'vee been a customer of theirs since moving to the Hudson Valley (Wappingers Falls) and haven't been disappointed thus far. A few neighbors on my street utilize their service and recommended that I do the same. Thankfully haven't had to summon them for any repairs, but my neighbors swear by their customer service and all tell me how reliable they are. I've never had to call them to fill up my tank, they just show up every few weeks. Works for me and I never have to worry about having oil in this tank When you sign up for the service package they come inspect your furnace and make sure its ready for the winter. My only negative about them is that they are a bit pricier than others in the area. I've spoken to several other locals that pay less than I do. Apparently you're paying for their customer service and reliability and when its -20 degrees out and something breaks, that's when that matters the most. They offer various plans including budget plans, pay per fill up, etc. and have options to "lock" rates. I'm still hopeful that one day we can ditch this archaic oil system and gas lines will make it to my house... But until then we are stuck with oil and I'll keep KOSCO as my supplier read more

Kosco Heritage is one of the better suppliers of heating oil in the area. They offer discount plans for Bard employees. My partner is one. Yesterday I called customer service and spoke with Heather M. Metzger-Brodhead. She was friendly, knowledgeable and was able to give me the information I needed in a timely fashion. My giving 4 stars instead of 5 has nothing to do with her. It has to do with past struggles about scheduling annual service. Their system is at best bizarre. When you sign up for an annual equipment maintenance plan, you are informed that, included in the price, (which is rather heftyat over $400, not including parts), is a boiler evaluation/tune up. The catch is, you can't schedule it right then. You have to call back in 6 months to schedule it for the warmer months. If you happen to forget, and not call in January or February, it's very difficult to schedule an appointment. I understand why they want to schedule the appointment for a slack time, but why not let me schedule the appointment right then, when I'm paying for the service? This is the fly in the ointment. Otherwise, I have found them prompt to respond to requests for fuel when necessary and most of the time, it's not necessary as they track fuel usage with reasonable accuracy and are almost always there to keep the tank topped up when you need it. read more

Was not happy with service. Had over an year of problems with my furnace. They were out multiple times for the same problem. We had nights of no heat. This year, furnace needed to be fix again and then two weeks later not working. We had to call another company to finally fix the problem and give us real answers. Once I asked the KOSCO repair man- should this furnace be replaced with all the problems. Respond "nope, this old girl has some life in her". but I think it it was a way to make more money on repairs. They forgot to deliver oil one season. I called and they took us off the auto delivery! No answer why. It just happen. So this season we made plans to use another delivery company- they showed up and filled out tank with no consent to do so. Customer service was no friendly when we called out the non approved oil delivery. Will not use KOSCO again. read more

I was horribly overcharged for oil delivery - the number of gallons on the receipt was ridiculous and Kosco keeps saying my gauge is broken. The issue isn't the gauge. I know when they last filled the tank and now they're using "broken gauge" as an excuse for why they (supposedly) added 3/4 of a 275-gal tank when the house was only occupied 53 days by a single person. On-demand water heater, thermostat set at 69 during the day and 61 at night, and they insist I used that much oil. Personally, I think the driver stopped at his house first and put 100 gallons into his own tank. They're not going to make this right because they don't care. They just keep repeating "broken gauge." Needless to say, I won't be using this company ever again. DO NOT LET THEM FILL UP YOUR TANK UNLESS YOU'RE THERE TO WITNESS IT. read more

I've had my annual boiler appointment on my calendar for months. I called yesterday and confirmed the appointment. I took a day off of work to be home for the appointment and they called 1/2 hour before with an automated call that it would be cancelled. The next appointment available was in two weeks. I asked as a courtesy for the inconvenience if they could install a new thermostat that I bought. They refused and said it would be $115. Nice eh? read more

As a customer who always pays bills on time, signed up for automatic delivery, and paid extra for yearly emergency service and annual maintenance, i am extremely disappointed with this company. Their excuse for poor customer service is that they were slammed by the cold weather, when the truth is they let go of many of their oil truck delivery drivers so that they have minimal staff to deliver oil to all of their customers. On top of that, they have unqualified and unhelpful people handling the phones. They don't care about their customers. Just making sure they get payments for their huge oil bills. I had a horrible experience with them waiting on hold for hours at a time, being promised oil would be delivered over five days straight while i froze in my house and risked pipes freezing and other damage to the house. Management never follows up, even with issues prior to winter storms. read more
