    Bagel Hole

A failed attempt at hitting up Di Fara's (http://www.yelp.com/biz/di-fara-pizza-brooklyn) (#1) resulted in my visit here at Kosher Bagel Hole. Despite being very saddened over missing out on some of NY's finest pizza, the underlying hunger overtook my need for preference and pushed for anything that I could shove into my mouth. After seeing random bunches of Hasidic Jewish gentleman walk in and out of this bagel shop, I was convinced this was going to be a good stop. And for a moment, it was. I ordered a couple of toasted bagels with lox spread and though a bit miniature in size, packed a worthy bite in taste. The spread was creamy, with just enough lox to get some salmon flavor and the bagel itself was devoured in a matter of seconds. I was ready to order another bagel (they have a decent variety here) but decided against it in fear of "bloated bagel syndrome" (#2). The Mexican guys behind the counter were egging my friend and I on about trying more stuff, but we decided against it. The owner seemed like a nice guy and offered us extra napkins after noticing the smears of lox spread on our faces. Instead, we went for some water and juice, which washed down quite nicely. In the end, these bagels are not so mind blowing that I'd go out of my way to return again. I'm not even sure I'd come back after another failed DiFara's attempt. But I do know that if I lived in the area, I'd be like the locals and hit this place up before heading to the train. ---------- (#1): Dom was vacation. I should've called ahead of time. Wait, he never answers the phone. (#2): Occurs after ingesting two or more bagels with some type of cream cheese. Clutching of the stomach and reoccurring bouts of sleepiness are sure to follow.

While waiting for our 2-hour wait pizza across the street, we went here and ordered smoked salmon in a bagel. We requested to remove the inside to lessen the carb. They use traditionally made bagel. That means hard crust and it seems unleavened. My sandwich was good. The rest of the things they sell is standard deli items. We ate by the window. There are no regular chairs here.

Half of whitefish salad sandwich on sesame twist.

I haven't eaten at this place for years but was in the neighborhood and decided to stop by, they used to be known for great tuna fish and white fish salad. Picked up 2 sandwiches and honestly couldn't be more disappointed. I've never heard of anyone putting butter on a roll and tuna or whitefish salad on top. Whitefish salad is fatty as is, but butter??? Come on. Maybe it's under new ownership but when you pay $8 for a sandwich and they barely put any salad. Took a picture of a half so you can see.

Everything bagel with salmon lox, scallion cream cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onions

This place is located right by my workplace, so I come here when I'm craving a Salmon Lox Bagel. I've been here twice already, and the first time I got an Everything bagel with salmon lox and plain cream cheese. I got a ton of salmon lox, and the total was around 7.50. The second time I came, I ordered an Everything bagel with salmon lox, scallion cream cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onions, I believe the total for that was 8.59 I prefer the latter more, but nonetheless, I'd definitely come back for my salmon lox bagels!

Very good bagel. Not the best in NYC, but very good. VERY generous with the cream cheese, which I like. Nice people.

As far as the customer service goes I wish it was a bit better. The staff aren't the most pleasant. No good morning no acknowledgement of comprehending what you order they just walk away and start the order. Which is why I double check always. I do notice they speak more pleasantly to other customers that come in. Not sure if it's a culture thing or could they be discriminatory but it's a bit unsettling. Food: 3.8/5 I only order the poppy seed bagel and that's pretty tasty. Not to doughy although I do have them take out a good portion of the bread because I like it to be extremely thin. Service: 3 /5 Service needs major improvements , language barriers are also a major factor to consider as they do speak Spanish and their primary language. If you are in the neighborhood, you should pop in and buy something to show your respect. What you should buy is the herring. And specifically, if you happen to be lucky enough to stroll in during Holland Herring season in June/July, that is the herring to get. Even if you just had a giant meat based meal a couple doors down, you can still make room for one herring. Consider it the Jewish equivalent of surf and turf. Although one of my friends said visiting both LES icons was more akin to a "bang bang". Sometimes it's the small shops that make the biggest mark. This is certainly the case with R&D. The place is tiny, but the fish is mighty. I can't speak highly enough about the Holland Herring. So silky. So delicate. So much fun to eat. Held up by the tail, dragged through a mix of chopped onions and pickles, and lowered down into your awaiting mouth. These things are large. They are going to take a few good sized bites. Enjoy the contrast of textures and flavors. Tilting your head back to eat it almost demands that you close your eyes and savor every moment. Yes, the entire herring case is a marvel. While most folks will walk out of R&D with nova (what most people call lox, but is really cold smoked salmon), the real score is the sable and sturgeon. Or, if you are a salt lover, you can get legitimate belly lox here too. It satisfies the soul to see an appetizing store holding the line. Sure, you can put your smoked fish on a bagel or bialy with cream cheese. However, I submit that fish this good should really be enjoyed in its purest form. Maybe if you want to cut the salt, lay some on a thin piece of old world 100% rye bread. Not the squishy deli stuff, but the hard eastern European kind. Perhaps a dolop of sour cream. A few chives if feeling fancy. My old cantor used to love creamed herring with pickled onions on chunks of challah. If you go the herring route and it's not Holland Herring season, I fully endorse this approach. But don't sleep on the Holland Herring. Get one. Eat it on the bench outside or bring it across the street and eat it standing up in the park. I heard rumor that once upon a time folks would eat them right at the counter. That seems a little messy for my taste, but far be it from me to keep a herring lover from their delightful fishy morsels.

It's a pretty spacious bagel spot with ample seating menu's with pricing for all items they sell which is helpful. Food: 3/5 I ordered a jalapeño bagel with turkey bacon, and scrambled eggs. The bagel was okay nothing to rave about your standard bagel. Nothing to make me fave about it. The texture was chewy and a bit doughy if you like your bagels that texture this may be the spot for you. Overall my bagel was about 10-12$ I believe. They charge extra for a rainbow bagel and other specialty bagels like jalapeño. Which is pretty expensive so make sure you're aware of that. Service: 3/5 The customer service was mediocre. The guy at the front wasn't the most pleasant. Very much get you in an out top of place. They weren't rude but not the most cheerful I'd say.
