Ma Chinese Cuisine was certainly unique, but the positive reviews and delicious-looking pictures convinced us to try it for a takeout dinner. The woman that answered the phone was friendly, professional, and a complete joy; we had a reasonably large order and she coordinated it with easy accuracy. When we arrived at the place to pick up our goods, we saw that the restaurant had a spacious room dedicated solely for to-go orders, as well as a modern dining room for those deciding to eat there. The place was spotless and even the takeout area was bright and welcoming. Our ride home consisted of about 20 minutes of driving time, as well as another 20 or so minute stop at the supermarket, but the food was still warm by the time we arrived! We unpacked the sturdy, insulated bag they had provided and were happy to see that our dishes all arrived as requested and in generous portion sizes. We started by sharing a few items, like a quart of the House Special Soup, which included shrimp, white meat chicken, and pork with mixed vegetables in a chicken broth. The strands of pork were a bit chewy, but the chicken and jumbo shrimp were tender. The broth was flavorful, but light on the sodium and better with a dash of black pepper. We also divided up the Mu Shu Chicken with chicken strips, cabbage, and egg that we were to wrap in pancakes with sweet hoisin sauce. The pancakes were fresh and held up even when they were stuffed with the warm filling and heavy sauce. They tasted like they were handmade and not from any sort of package. The actual chicken mixture had a slightly burnt flavor, but was otherwise delightful. The only issue was that there was so much stuffing and only four pancakes. We probably could have used six to eight instead. Lastly, we shared the Chicken Lo Mein, which needed more chicken and some vegetables, as it was mainly noodles. It was richly flavored and not at all greasy, though. We then each had our own entrees. I opted to get something from their "Steamed and Grilled" section of the menu. My Steamed Shrimp came with a wide selection of vegetables, including Chinese cabbage, napa, jicama, broccoli, carrots, string beans, and snow peas. The vegetables were all crispy and fresh, and the shrimp were plump and delicious. I got it with a "light" spicy garlic sauce on the side, which apparently had no cornstarch in it. The sauce was very thin, so I assume that was, indeed, the case, but, despite being heavily wrapped, a good portion of the sauce had leaked out into the bag. I will say that the small drop I tried had a nice heat to it. I also sampled a bite of someone else's same version of the dish that had been sauteed and not steamed, and thought it was spicy and well-cooked. Someone else in our group had ordered the Shrimp with Honey Walnuts, not realizing that the shellfish would be fried and the sauce mayonnaise-based, so she was not thrilled, but that was not the restaurant's fault. However, she did mention that she thought it was bland. Despite her main dish, we all though T.S. Ma Chinese Cuisine did a nice job with our meal. Everything was lightly salted, not too greasy, and with enough flavor to keep it interesting. Plus, the staff even made little bags for each of us that included a fortune cookie, sauce packets, and plastic silverware; it was a very cute touch.

It is similar to Sichuan/Szechuan cuisine in ways, in that there is an emphasis on spicy foods, although the spice profiles differ. It is in the space formerly occupied by a different Chinese restaurant called Joyce (RIP - I loved and miss their short-lived foray into seafood boils). Although there are many great authentic (meaning regionally specialized) Chinese restaurants in Bergen County and northern NJ, including several Sichuan places, this is the only Hunan one I'm aware of (without venturing further south into NJ), and is certainly one of the nicest Chinese restaurants atmosphere-wise, with an elegant dining room. If you want to try the interesting and authentic dishes, of which there are plenty, order from the sections of the menu labeled with "Hunan" or "Home Style." The soups and cold appetizers are very traditional too. The house speciality is the Hunan steamed fish head with pickled chili - the platter is quite impressive and takes 20-30 min to prepare. You can add tofu (recommended) or noodles for an additional $5. We ordered this but since I'm not a fish head fan (and like my fish very simply dressed) - I think it was a type of carp - the appreciation for it was lost on me. It's topped with a heap of red chilis but is actually not as spicy as it looks. Personally I prefer the fish fillet dishes such as the fish with ginger, which has very tender filet slices. I loved the soup dumplings (large and soupy), shrimp with salted egg yolk (or any salted egg yolk dishes, which aren't easy to find), and enjoyed the tender sautéed beef dishes like beef with spring onion or the spicy green pepper with steak, with crunchy peppers that give a piquant refreshing kick. They have whole Peking duck (Beijing roast duck)! The menu only shows pricing for the whole duck but we asked for half and they obliged. To be honest it's not the best Peking duck I've had but the balance of crispy skin (that's yet not too fatty) to generously shaved lean duck meat was unimpeachable. And they use high-quality crepes that are superbly thin but do not tear. The lo mein is also pretty good - it's slightly smoky and is better than common. Parking tip: there are only a few spots in front but there is a parking lot in the back of the building with plenty of spaces. There are lots of exciting and exotic menu offerings and still many we'd like to try, so we'll be back repeatedly.

This place is great and food are hot-to-go. It may be the only kosher-style Chinese restaurant in the town. The price is decent (inexpensive) and serving size is fulfilling. From a take-out food perspective, I don't expect gourmet-level tastes (don't get me wrong, the food tastes good to me) but the food quality is definitely above the par. I always order orange chicken and general chicken/beef. The waiting time is short (since I always call ahead (like 10 mins) to place my order for pick up), and staff is very nice, though they can get inpatient sometimes during busy hours due to the many calls & orders. I saw them constantly taking phone orders during one of my lunch visit. In a nutshell, this restaurant is a very good restaurant that serves the kosher-style Chinese food. Price range is cheap but quality is very good. I would eat here than go to other fast food restaurant. read more

However, the real issue was the food itself. The chicken was absolutely disgusting--chewy and filled with fat. It definitely needs to be inspected because what we received was not acceptable. The worst part was that we all got extremely sick after eating here. We spent the entire night and the next day in the bathroom. This was the only thing we ate that day, so it had to be the chicken. I am incredibly disappointed that a place like this is open in a town with so many great restaurants. I also blame myself for making such a poor choice when there are so many other options in town. Stay far away from Gourmet Garden unless you want to be sick for days. There is nothing gourmet about this place. You've been warned!
