And even better - the top rated experience in the city happens in my birthday hotel. Done deal! I booked for a party of 4 - I really wanted to bring my sister-in-laws sister but resys for 5 were "sold out." Imagine my surprise when I got there and there were plenty of tables that could have accommodated our whole party. I should have called directly - charge it to the game I guess. We went on a pretty tame day - the Sunday before Memorial Day. Chicago is pretty dead that weekend which was surprising but tipsy tea was lit. The good: There was a live DJ - who played the Kaytranada mix of Teedra Moses lmao Our waitress Kayla - what a gem! Kept the cocktails and the teapots flowing. Seating - chairs were armless and with arms. We love accessible seating on our bday weekend! The tea tower was great but heavy on the sweets. We actually thought the savory bites were the standouts and we LOVE sweets. So this is saying something. It would be great if customers could personalize the tea tower selections. The event is pricey - for 4 of us it was $400+ tax. But a cute experience that will stay with you. read more

The 3.5 stars is mostly for the value of the experience. This was my first time doing tea and I wish I had chosen Palm Court or the Peninsula for the true ambiance. I was able to make a reservation without too much fuss, and prepaid around $190 for two traditional tea packages. They also have the tipsy tea packages for $25 more per person. It is a room with a DJ, a small bar, and mild decor. The room feels quite closed off and dark. Our server was personable and the staff was conscientious of allergies and dietary restrictions. The traditional teas were unlimited and we tried the turmeric ginger, chai, and green tea. All came with their own tea bag, a separate cup for each tea, and their own tea kettle brought right to the table. A tower of light snacks was provided as well. This includes various nibbles of tuna, quiche, lemon meringue tarts, bacon wrapped dates, dolmas, pecan pie and other offerings. The nibbles were quite good, but sparse. Overall, the experience was underwhelming and I do not think the price matched the value. read more

Went for afternoon tea for 12pm seating on a Saturday. Made reservations online via Tock and had to pay online for the afternoon tea + 20% surcharge prior to dining. I liked that Tock app asked for any dietary restrictions and if we were celebrating anything. I selected birthday and when arrived at the table, there was a card that stated "happy birthday (name) party". I was dining with a vegetarian friend and she was able to eat everything that was offered for the day. Ambiance- very small setting with limited number of tables for high tea. Bar area and live DJ were very cool. I wish we sat in a brighter location but unfortunately, we were seated in the area without direct lighting from top. I loved the table setting with a small hat hair pin accessory. Tea selections - tea bags with a large pot. I expected to be a loose tea but was disappointed to see tea served in tea bags. It was also rather a large pot so no refills were necessary in 90 minute experience. I left the pots were more for the table to share with the entire party. However, we each wanted our own tea and poured our own. I've done several afternoon teas around the city and this was the only place that offered tea bags for afternoon tea. Snack selection - more sweet than savory. Most were good. Service - it was ok. I would've tipped 20% regardless but it's also different to know that I already paid 20% tip and received minimal service, it was quite disappointing. read more

*NOT NUT ALLERGY FRIENDLY* Food: My friend, with a severe nut allergy, mentioned to the servers that she was allergic to ALL nuts. We ordered the tasting towers so, for her, they brought out a "nut free" platter but she had an allergic reaction from one of the spreads. She had to leave and run to a drug store a block away to grab allergy medicine. When we brought it up to the servers, their only response was that they "guaranteed" that there were no nuts on the nut free platter. Service: No servers took accountability for potentially serving nuts to someone who stated they had a nut allergy. No complementary drinks or desserts to compensate for the traumatic experience. We did "Spill the Tea" - it's a 90-minute experience of snacks + unlimited boozy tea. We contacted the venue months in advance because this experience gets booked out quickly - it's only available on the weekends, with 2 seatings per day. We requested all vegetarian items for our party. When we arrived, the entire staff was wildly unprepared for our dietary needs - which was shocking considering we had to pay for everything up front. The table favorite boozy tea was "Like, Get a Clue!" and the lemon crinkle cut cookie. Things we didn't like: - Music was wayyyy too loud to enjoy conversation with the person next to you. We felt like we were at the club versus a tea party - The Tea Party snacks had more sweet items than savory. The items rotate seasonally, too. However, the items we did have were tasty. - The service was incredibly slow. It was one waiter for the entire Tea Party Experience. We were barely able to order 3 beverages in the 90-minute timeframe. The Tea Tower Snacks weren't served until 40 minutes in our reservation. I do not recommend this experience if your group is larger than 6 - only because of how slow it was. If there is a second server, this could be a smoother experience. Had a great meal here and it didn't kostali an armi and a legi. Kostali is the new restaurant from the Nahabedians, the owners of the much-loved Naha and Brindille. Not surprisingly, the food was outstanding although it is covering culinary territory already done masterfully by Avec, Galit, and several other Mediterranean-focused restaurants in Chicago. Here's what we had: Bread with whipped feta dip. Bread is complementary and we added the feta dip. Well done but not an exciting taste. Lamb ribs. Very tasty and a good size portion. Ribs were meaty and well seasoned but not spicy or sweet. I'd order this again. Feta cheese turnover. Good but very small portion. Just two. Loup de mer (aka branzino). Outstanding. We had the kitchen debone it and it was cooked perfectly. Fish was moist on the inside and crispy on the outside. Highly recommend. The only downside to Kostali was the layout off the lobby of the Gwen Hotel lobby. We sat in the front room and it felt and sounded like a hotel lobby. There is an interior room that is quieter with a few plush booths and that's where I'd like to sit next time. Overall, really liked it and we'll be back. read more

Chicago is full of so many very good restaurants, in so many neighborhoods, and at so many price points. But alas Kostali is not one of them. There are a few bright spots on the menu-- a super dry Spanish cider on the wine list, a beet tzatziki you can get with the excellent bread -- but nothing that would justify the visit. The entrees are competent (nice pasta, well-cooked fish) but bland, under seasoned, and generally just don't come together. And a few things are just not good -- especially the poor oysters ruined by a sweet topping and the unpleasant crunch of pink peppercorns. Not can I recommend it for the experience. The decor is simultaneously cramped and institutional and the place was mostly empty at prime time on a Saturday night. Then again, that's how we got a table there. So maybe the best I can say is that if this is the best thing you can find, then it's the best thing you can find. But unless you are staying at the hotel, you might be happier staying home. read more

I went to Kostali for the tipsy tea on a Sunday with a group of six. It was $55 per person for a tea tower and bottomless tipsy tea or Prosecco. You could also do a $35 option that's non-alcoholic. Each person got one of each item on the tea tower and bottomless of the "Spill the Tea" tea. It was a little confusing online because we didn't have a choice of what tea we got, etc. but the tea was good and the food was also decent. The service was good and we had no complaints. I'm not sure I would go back unless it was a special occasion or something, but overall it was enjoyable. There is also a brunch and cocktail menu of other items to order a la carte if you'd like. It wasn't very crowded and a bit hard to find - it's tucked back in the Gwen, which is on the fifth floor. They do validate parking for four hours ($12) for the parking garage across the street which is good for this area. read more

After recalling a great experience at Brindille, I decided to have my birthday outing at what would be my first visit to Kostali by Naha. I booked a reservation on Tock for afternoon tea on New Year's Day and worked with Jason, the manager, to coordinate allergies and dietary restrictions for a party of 10. He was knowledgeable and timely in his response to ensure our afternoon tea was seamless. On the day of the afternoon tea, there was a snowstorm and I arrived fashionably late, but was relieved to see the few guests that had arrived were already seated and being served. The staff provided fun tea party accessories for us to wear and keep. Jason kindly provided an explanation of the hor d'oeuvres and teas. Then, our server brought out an array of sweet and savory hor d'oeuvres, accounting for the variety of preferences and dietary restrictions (I'm talking vegans and peanut allergies galore) The presentation alone was enough for us to figuratively salivate. The afternoon tea menu changes regularly and we ordered from the holiday menu. Some of the food options we had were cranberry and gingerbread scones with jams, homemade pita with hummus and prosciutto, and an assortment of mini tarts. All were freshly prepared and heavenly. A couple of the guests ordered extra food from the regular menu (no judgment) in addition to what was served with the tea and they also raved about that. There were no complaints from the group. None. That brings me to the tea and honey, the tea delivered! We ordered both alcoholic and non-alcoholic tea. Both were delicious to my squad of tea snobs. As a tea snob myself, I enjoyed the teas that were infused with spice and cognac (my favorite was called Buzz, Your Girlfriend Woof!). It made me feel warm and fuzzy in the midst of a snowstorm and I must say, they call it "tipsy" tea for a reason. Jason and our server went above and beyond to accommodate my bustling party of 10 and they did it with exceptional service and grace. This restaurant used to be one of the key reasons I would choose to stay at the Gwen hotel because of the restaurant and breakfast atmosphere. But they have changed the menu and the whole is totally different. They menu is VERY limited and atmosphere is totally changed. Before the atmosphere was very welcoming and friendly...the hostess and server were either of those things. Hostess seemed to have a bad attitude and had issues with me asking for specific needs for my coffee ( which the coffee was terrible and it used to be so good ) I am definitely disappointed and the level of service for this to be a luxury collection hotel. read more

We had a 7:30 PM reservation on a Tuesday evening and didn't see many other tables, which made sense since they were definitely a new restaurant. The staff were friendly in guiding us to the table and we enjoyed the quiet and peaceful environment. We had ordered a spread, a hummus, the octopus, and the broccoli for appetizers. We didn't order bread with the spread but still received a basket, which surprised us and it surprised us even more when we were told that the extra basket of bread was a part of the order with the spread, meaning we had to pay for it even though we weren't explained that the bread was a required piece of ordering the spread we already had on the tab. We asked for the basket to be taken away -- a restaurant shouldn't charge customers for an item unless letting them know first that it would be a part that they would be charged for and agree to ordering it. In terms of everything else, it didn't feel like anything special. Nothing was bad, but nothing was standout either. I found myself wondering at some points if everything tasted similar, and I realized it was because it tasted as if everything was seasoned similarly. Things are starting to open back up so finally ready to go back to restaurants. What better way to spend a cloudy afternoon with a bunch of girlfriends at tipsy tea party? This was not your typical tea party. No pinkies-up, ladies in sundresses, more edgy & modern. There was even a DJ spinning loud music by the host stand. Service was a bit...choppy. I had preordered the tower on tock when I made the res, and soon after we were seated, our waiter brought out the tower...without taking our drink orders first. So we were left staring at the tower of food waiting for our teas to arrive. And when it did, it was a bit of a letdown. Our tipsy teA was served in a modern, rather boring looking teapot (I didn't even want to be reminded by how ugly it was so no pics). The tea tasted like fat free milk with a lot of alcohol in it...if we come back, I'm sticking with the cocktails. The tea tower was decent, I liked the caviar sandwich and tahini cookie. But if you're a good home baker, these are probably not going to impress you much. I didn't see the point of beets on a tea tower. Maybe dress it up more? The burrata open face sandwich was the surprise hit, the fragrant and ripe strawberries paired beautifully with the creamy burrata and peppery arugula. It's an ok experience overall. It's new, but very good which is not surprising given the owners. Bread to start the meal is great, as is the complimentary butter - we sort of got [happily] talked into the whipped feta which was too large of a portion for the bread and didn't add much other than $4 to our bill (which appears to be the point given that the bread is complimentary). The Hearts of Romaine "salad" had a unique presentation but was ultimately quite good, though we agreed that the feta cheese turnovers were a bit generic and underwhelming. We only went with one large plate on an initial visit before Christmas but the Black Cod was very good quality and had nice flavors while many of the other options looked nice as well. Decor was nice and my wife was happy to have a recessed light above the table so she could see the menu, etc. Music was also a good choice and the volume was about right while service was quite good overall despite only being open a couple weeks. The cocktail options however were fantastic and the wine & beer list is very well chosen, you won't likely go wrong here. It's new, and I expect to be back shortly, but all initial reactions suggest this will be a hit despite the slightly strange location in The Gwen (Kostali was still way less crowded than the hotel bar/restaurant on my December visit and this space used to be a sad little underutilized breakfast and faux restaurant space at The Gwen which needed an update). It will take a big name to make this space a success, but I think all parties will be happy with this partnership and Kostali will go on to be quite successful. I'm a fan. read more

We just recently hosted our vow renewal here and the dinner was perfect! Current staff was great and food was large portions and delicious. The only reason I took off a star was because communication leading up to the event was a horror story. To sum it up, I didn't even have a reservation on the books... the person coordinating our event was no longer employed (we can see why) and information was not passed on. However, I went the day before to drop off items and from there had a magical experience. Everyone was accommodating to every request and met our needs perfectly. This review is only for the tipsy tea experience. I went with a group of girls for a bachelorette celebration. We were all flying in and 2 of the girls weren't sure if their plane would make it in time. We spoke to a rep weeks before the day and they guaranteed us those two girls could order à la carte. So the day comes and we 5 get there ready to start, as expected the other two had just landed so we asked our server about the à la carte option and she quickly said its not allowed. Ok thats fine the other two would just join late and still pay the entire package price. Then the next issue we had was one of the girls had a serious nut allergy. We spoke to the manager and expressed there can be NO nut in the pastries. He was very nice and brought out another tray for her. well 1 min into eating one of the desserts she has an immediate reaction. Her mouth begins to swell and burn. She quickly runs to the local pharmacy for meds. I spoke to the manager, not upset but just wanting him to know for the future so this doesnt happen to other patrons. Instead of just acknowledging the mistake, he keeps guaranteeing me theres no nuts in The pastries. I dont know what other evidence he needed but there was NUTS in the pastries..either it was in the sauce, glaze, or something but there was nuts in the ingredients somewhere. they really need to be more aware in their kitchen otherwise this could have become a very serious matter If she had eaten more. The next problem is what really got me upset. While the majority of the girls were taking a restroom break and two other girls were away running to the pharmacy to get meds our server who by the way is the same girl who told us no à la carte came by the table to share we were at the end of the all you can drink for the tipsy tea and she offered to give us a last pour. The 2 girls sitting at the table told the waitress to please come back as most of the girls were not there. We all get back to the table and i see our server so i asked her to please top off my prosecco glass. She very rudely said she came by already and already topped off everyone's champagne glasses. I immediately looked at the glass next to mine which happened to belong to the girl with the allergy, who by the way wasnt even back yet from the pharmacy and didnt even have a chance to drink her glass and noticed it was still ONLY half full...i of course pointed this out to the server who very obviously looked annoyed, said shed get someone and walked away. Well guess what she came back with a bottle and ACTUALLY really did top off everyone's glass then. If you are someone looking for a fun time with your girls DEF do not come here. We came all the way from Los Angeles to celebrate a bachelorette in chicago and this was something we had been looking forward to. I went for their tipsy tea experience. I did the traditional tea experience. I like that they had a super cute setting and it seems like a nice hotel with a great more modern tea experience. They had a good DJ playing. Our waiter was nice. However.... There's tower was a huge disappointment. I'd rate it a 2/5. There weren't a ton of items on the tea tower and the ones that were there weren't very good. The tea was "okay". Having heard good things, we decided to check it out on a whim, and were quite frankly super surprised at how polished the entire experience was! . First off, the restaurant is extremely beautiful, with thoughtful modern décor matching the Art Deco ambiance of the Gwen hotel. The tables are thoughtfully spaced apart, making for a comfortable, romantic place to share a bottle off their wine list with a date! The service was also impeccable, with our waiter Andrew being super attentive and on point with his dining recommendations. . The highlights for us were the beautiful crusted and prepared black cod and the lamb shank entrees for sure. In fact, @missqiuqiu devoured the black cod so quickly, it was a shame we didn't get two! The lamb shank was delicious, gamey, and full of flavor; it was also gigantic! . Which leads me to the value you get here: We ordered three dishes, but with the included bread, we easily ordered enough food for 3 or 4! While the individual dishes seem expensive at a glance, when sharing family style, your dollar could actually go quite a long way. . We finished with the delicious olive oil cake, and our waiter Andrew was nice enough to write congratulations on the plate, having earlier told him we had recently gotten engaged. Checked the new concept out from Chef Carrie Nahabedian, previously of such star acts as Naha and Brindille. Hotel dining in Chicago is really starting to take off in general, and Kostali is now officially part of that exciting wave. Broadly Mediterranean, covering cuisine from a large stretch of coast, the restaurant manages to do a great job of feeling both cohesive and eclectic. Chef Naha lures you in with recognizable, accessible dishes and surprises you with complex flavors, textures, and elevations. Kostali, not so surprisingly, puts its best fin forward with seafood. With that, let's dive into the menu: We started with the fritto misto (a mixture of fried seafood and veggies) and the hummus. The fritto misto was the best we've ever had - perfect crunch and flavor on the batter, perfectly cooked seafood, and, most importantly, candied lemon with red peppercorn (I'd eat an entire bowl just of these). The hummus, while not the most flavorful I've ever had, was delightfully justified with spiced lamb and shaved radish. The other thing I'll mention with the hummus is that the pita, while toasted perfectly, wasn't house made. With places like Etta, Pacific Standard Time, Cira, and Galit baking their own pita in big visible ovens, it's tough for a Mediterranean spot to compete on the hummus/pita front without that warm, freshly baked element. No strikes against Kostali here; being lodged in a hotel may bring space/equipment limitations, as well, and, frankly, everything else was so good that we had no real complaints. For entrees, we went with two seafood-heavy options: the whole roasted loup de mer, and the house made rolled garganelli pasta with seafood, veggies, and feta cheese butter. Both dishes were highly fresh, flavorful, and well balanced. Word of advice: do not have them cut off the fish head for you. Keep that bad boy on and devour the cheek meat. You'll thank me later. Before dessert, we had the feta cheese turnovers. Some parts savory and some parts sweet, they served as a good transitional course. We were certainly full by this point, but we're not quitters. We ordered two desserts because decisions are hard: the custard, and the olive oil cake. Both were a wonderful balance of flavors, beautifully presented, and had great combinations of texture. Frankly, you should also order two desserts. All in all, the attention to detail - from the interior to the food - was immaculate. Our server Jake added a whole extra dimension of enjoyment to our experience, and he pulled everything together to make for a perfect evening. Company brought us here to eat in celebration of International Women's Day, which was a lovely thought because it's women-owned! I got the scallops as my entree - they were delicious, soft inside and seared perfectly outside, but I remember the flavors in the dish to be basic and not unique. I really liked the broccoli/cauliflower appetizer. The spreads with bread were meh. And the chickpea balls appetizer was solid too. Tried 3 different desserts and my favorite was the chocolate raspberry cheesecake. Service was very good, everything came out at the same time despite our party being around 15-20 people. Two of us went there Friday night and had the place to ourselves. It was sad to see so few people, but understandable given Coronavirus and what seems like a challenging location in the hotel. Having undivided attention from our server resulted in excellent service and conversation; including a nice tasting of Madeira. The food was excellent as well. The menu was not too extensive, but our server explained that given the reduced volume of customers the smaller menu ensured fresher items. No complaints about that. We started with the bread service and the eggplant spread. The spread was very good (maybe could have been a bit larger potion for $4 though). Even without the spread, the butter that came with the bread was great. My wife had the halibut and loved the dish, including what she said were the best hen-in-the-woods mushrooms ever. I seldom order pork chops as I generally prefer a steak. Since I was not in the mood for steak I ordered the pork chop and was very glad I did. It was the best I have ever had, great taste and very tender. Chef Carrie has done a great job and we hope that this venture succeeds in these difficult times for all restaurants. I had a wonderful experience at the The Gwen! This is the perfect hotel for a weekend getaway! Every staff member I encountered, from the valet to the check- in to the cleaning staff were delightful and eager to help! Kostali by Naha has has delicious food. Manager Jason and hostess Kayla were helpful and knowledgeable about the menu offering great recommendations. This place is elegant with an awesome vibe. I was initially impressed by the ambiance, upscale decor, and downtempo chill music. The hostess was wonderful, enticed us with the menu, as we initially were going to dine at the outside establishment. The bread selection was delectable as well as the wine menu...if you like champagne the cremant is wonderful. We ordered the pasta which had a variety of fresh seafood in creamy savory sauce. I had the best time at Kostali for my birthday dinner! Food and service were both excellent. Highly recommend the George's Bank Scallops.

There are a few fabulous things about this restaurant; sexy decor, mediterranean vibe, loved the sky blue curved bar. More importantly the food, I'm all about any happy hour or the "Aperitivo" hour as they call it. It's from 5:30 - 7:30, I had the oysters and a glass of wine, hungout with Jacob till my friends arrived and we ended up booking Tipsy Tea for that Saturday. That is a darling experience, yummy flavored hot boozy tea's and finger sandwiches. Very different experience for Tea verses happy hour, DJ, bright colors where the evening seemed more proper. Disappointing all the way around. First, good luck finding the place. I'm glad I was early because I lost 10 minutes trying to find it. SIGNS are always a good idea. I was early for a group dinner so decided to have a gin and tonic at the bar. Not sure the gin they use, but it was one of the worst I've had. The bartender was no conversationalist. It was all one way. When I attempted to add to the "conversation," he totally ignored me. The appetizers were ok, but the oysters were bad. THe meal was okay. No reason to go back. read more
