Have been here 2x. The first time was for brunch and the second time was for our anniversary dinner. We enjoyed both times. I wish I could remember what we had but I just can't. I am visiting Rock Hill, SC, this is my second time visiting Kounter in the past year. Everything in this restaurant is special, most importantly in the actual restaurant and the food and drinks, there are so many cool details in everything. Kounter is a historic building in old town, the restaurant has done an amazing job keeping its historical relevance important. I had the Cubano and after having it twice, it's my favorite Cubano ever! All the ingredients are homemade, from the bread to the homemade pickles. My wife had the bacon wrapped meatloaf and roasted Brussels sprouts, so delicious. Brandi was our bartender/ waitress, she was our waitress when we came a few months ago. Her enthusiasm about the restaurant, menu and drinks was so informative. I actually thought she was the owner. She told me the owner has made everything on the menu from a " Scratch Kitchen". Food was good. Service was ok. However, after reviewing expense receipts a day later, we notice they charged us $10 more than receipt total. Food was $139.52. We tipped $20.00 for a total of $159.52. This is a hidden gem right in the middle of downtown Rock Hill, SC. This quaint little space is owned by Chief Roberts. The decor reminds me of a soda shop where I was expecting an egg cream, with a vintage working fridge, reminded me of time with grandma (which were great). And the food!!! I had a wonderful experience at Kounter! Our waitress was very nice and very knowledgeable about the the menu. My friends and I shared the hummus and cheese squeeze appetizer, which had a great variety of dips and was a wonderful shareable. I also had the seasonal apple cocktail, which was delicious!! For my main meal, I ordered the smoking tuna poke. It was an extremely flavorful and delectable dish! This was my first visit to Kounter Rockhill SC. I was able to book reservations on a Saturday afternoon via OpenTable for a 06:15 PM arrival. The overall atmosphere is a very casual diner style. My party of 2 was seated at a hightop table (as booked) I ordered the Shrimp & Grits. The overall presentation was not impressive. The dish is topped with "crispy fried collards" and fried shallots. For a dish where the shrimp are typically the star there was not much to see in this presentation. The most off-putting aspect of the dish is that the shrimp are served with "tail on". This was not mentioned by our server nor was it listed on the menu. The tail on presentation really seems to lend itself to a potential choking hazard. The overall flavor was in my opinion lack luster. I would rate the dish low overall. My wife ordered the Chicken Sliders and this presentation offered more of a wow factor. The dish is large and easily sharable. The pickles on the slider were especially nice and added to the flavor. We topped off the meal by sharing the Key Lime dessert. For this dish the appearance exceeded the taste. The dish is quite eye catching but the lack of a true pie crust and the substitution of graham cracker crumbles didn't make up for the overall lack of flavor. For a first experience I'd give this location 2 stars. I'm likely to visit again, but I would not recommend nor order any of the items that I sampled on this visit. read more

Wow! We say that a lot when we eat at Kounter. The flavors are unusual and WOW!! My favorite thing on the menu is the Smoking Tuna Poke appetizer which I get as a meal. It's not fair for me to say it's my favorite because I can't do without it to try something else. The Chile Garlic Shrimp appetizer is amazing and so is the Baked Feta. My husband loved the Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf. We love the Albariño wine. We are always too full for desserts but they sound amazing. The service is impeccable and the atmosphere is fun. They've moved the hostess table outside so they have more seating now. Reservations are recommended. Highly addictive and a foodie's haven! Go!!! read more

So my wife and did date night for first time in a long time. We are screaming busy and I travel a lot. Got hooked on the hype about Kounter and had to try!! I eat out 10-12 days a month and I love new restaurants. Overall I was disappointed as it missed many marks. Started with Kret8 Crisps and boo Thai shrimp tacos My wife had a pear martini and it was awesome. The food was 50/50. Crisps were tasty but Thai das heat and these tacos were way too sweet. Next we ordered sliders, fries and Brussels sprouts. Sides hands down rocked. True to what expectations were. Sliders however missed many marks. A slab of meat on rolls that can't support. The lettuce, tomato, aioli was tasty but extremely messy. read more

Reviews are what brought us in..... Foos was tasty. We had the Smoking Tuna Poke that was delicious! The fried ribs were filling! They were crispy and very flavorful. The four stars are a result of the chicken and waffle sushi. The tiny chicken tender that was supposed to fill the waffle crisp was dry and did not do justice to the dish. Finally, the shrimp and grits..... the entree came our piping hot (this is a thing for me). The presentation was lovely! One little problem, though, at least two of the shrimp were undercooked.... This is my favorite restaurant for brunch. The chicken and waffles are incredible. Everything I have had there including their cocktails are incredible. It's the first "real local restaurant" that truly does not feel like a chain or a cookie cuter restaurant. I think it's the best place for brunch in the Charlotte area. Where to begin? We went for Sunday brunch, made reservations but not much going on Sunday afternoon. Service was terrible, the food was almost worse. We got the Grilled asparagus quiche and my husband got the Old Town original, and his ribs might have been the only decent item, buiscuit was either old or extremely over baked, the "white cheddar grits " were yellow and grainy/dry, so dry. My quiche was so bland I ate the top and left the rest. When they asked us how it was and we were honest, the staff was apologetic and went on to say when the chef is there it's a great experience. I did not like it, sorry. There were a few thing: it was lunch time and I set at the bar, the place smelled bad, like old standing water or sever. Very off putting. Ordered beef sliders, I did not like the way they serve it. It comes out as a big lamp of bread and meat and you have to cut it your self. Very messy. Several small sliders would have been more appealing and easier to eat. Meat was too greasy, it was extremely "heavy" and my stomach felt weird after three "sliders". It also soaked the bottom bread completely and it was hard to eat the whole thing. Also, and don't judge me, the fork was very heavy! It was not comfortable to use it. Amongst good thing: lemonade was tasty, service was good and decor is pleasant but over did not enjoy the experience. read more

Welp, I guess someone had to be the lone dissenter. We'd been looking forward to trying Kounter after seeing them all over the news, social media, etc., but I feel like this is a case of a lot of hype... and not much to back it up. The fella and I made reservations for Sunday brunch and were seated in the back of the restaurant. Somehow it feels smaller than when it was Five & Dine, and the acoustics were awful. Another weird note - but one that definitely detracted from our experience - was that the floor shook when anyone walked by. Just basic walking cause our table and chairs (and bodies) to vibrate. Onto the food... I asked to start with the chocolate croissant ($5) and ordered the chicken and waffle ($15) for my meal. The fella got the breakfast sammie ($13). My croissant came after our food was delivered, which was kind of a bummer, and the chicken and waffle was just okay. The chicken was still on the bone (a drumstick), so it was really tricky to try and get a bite of waffle and chicken together, and the flavor was pretty bland. Honestly, the hash browns that came with it were the best part. The fella said the same thing about his; the sandwich was fine, but the hash browns were really good. Even the croissant was just ok; croissants are supposed to be light and flaky, but this one was heavy and doughy. Finally tried Kounter. There was so much hype, I really didn't expect it to live up to the buzz. Boy was I wrong!! We had 8pm reservations on a Friday night. The place was full, but our table was ready. We were seated immediately. Greater promptly by our server, Jay. This young man was amazing, there was a great energy I could feel from all the staff, they all appeared to really enjoy themselves, and they worked together well to provide excellent service. Everyone was so busy but it didn't feel chaotic, and I love how personable everyone was, even the Chef came over a few times. The cocktails were unique, and absolutely delicious. And I cannot stop dreaming bout the food. We tried 3 apps, the tuna poke, fried ribs, and garlic shrimp. AMAZING. There were four of us, we all got something different. Scallops, fish n tots, lobster and gnocchi, and meatloaf. Had a bite of everyone's and each unique and fabulous. We finished with the chocolate pie and banana foster taco. The depth of flavor in each bite was phenomenal. If I had to pick my top three from everything, #1 garlic shrimp #2 tuna poke #3 that cocktail with the peanut butter cups on top. The first was an afternoon date night / early dinner - we had the fried ribs as an appetizer, two fantastic cocktails and the fish tacos and Brussels for dinner. The second time was this week for a girls night - we shared the spicy shrimp and the cheese plate, then got the meatloaf, cake stand chicken sliders and a salad. It was soooooo delicious!
