Was on a well deserved raxing date after a long day. The food and server was absolutley fantastic! However when the time came to pay, I went to use a gift certificate that I was gifted but was denied. (I had used one in the past with no issues). A second waitress had come with the bill and then proceeded to point at the adress and phone number on my certificate and told me "Order must be over $60". Reading myself i didnt see that anywhere but thought id go home and check the website. No information on the rules of gift certificates. What started as a perfect evening was immediatley soured with the poor display and lack of communication. If the business wishes to continue handing out "gift certificates" I reccomend they print the rules on them. read more

It felt very Japanese home-y on the inside. Carpeted floors, a bit old but pretty busy and buzzing with waiters. I don't like sushi but my husband does and it looked good. They do their crab meet whole rather than shredded which is nice. They have charbroiled salmon and curry rice which both looked yummy to me. Well I am rounding up from 3.5 stars based on I've come to Kishi so many times and it's always been amazing. Tonight. Not so much but everyone has a bad day. The service has been better in the past. We had a new to us waiter that never returned to see if we wanted a second drink, typically we always order at least two drinks each. The food was okay, but could have been seasoned better. We have had this chef before but he wasn't the normal chef we have so maybe that's the difference but the food could have been a little better. Usually the sauces can make up for this problem but for whatever reason tonight it seemed like the sauces were watered down a little. Like I said, everyone has a bad day but I'm worried because it's been a little while since we have been here and it was not my best memory of this place. Kishi is typically my favorite teppen restaurant but tonight was a miss. I'll update the review the next time we come. read more

This is my second time here, my sister loves this place and comes here for all of her family celebrations. The people that run it are super nice and very accommodating. Teppan tables so the cook is on stage... overall the food and the show are on par with a Shogun. The service at places like this is normally very good and this is no different. If you are looking for a fancy place, this is not it. It's in an old strip mall. Again, nice people. read more

Love love love this place! Fresh sushi always and really big cuts of sushi. It never disappoints and it always hits the spot. In addition to the delicious food, the service is also great. Very friendly workers that we have come to know since we are always going back for more. Good place for a regular dinner with the family, a solo date, date night, and special days of celebration. They are really sweet with my children too, even my kids love it here. I can't say enough good things about Kishi. Kishi has been here since I was a child. I haven't been here for years. The place is in a great location, right off Foothill Blvd. We came on Veterans day for lunch. They weren't super busy. Our party of 7 were seated right away. The place looks the same. The decor is Japanese themed. You can choose between Teppanyaki or regular menu. We chose the lunch menu. The prices are still pretty high for a lunch menu. The service was quick and efficient. I got the chicken Katsu curry. The chicken was thick and the breading was crispy. The curry was Japanese style. It was good. I didn't care for the chicken katsu though. I prefer it to be thinner. I probably won't get that again. My mom got the salmon tempura lunch special. She enjoyed it. My teens got the Chicken Teriyaki Ala carte. It was nice that it came with rice, soup and salad. The chicken came out in chunks with teriyaki sauce drizzled over it. That was strange to me as I was expecting it to be coated in sauce. Unfortunately, this isn't the Kishi I remembered from long ago. I probably won't return. read more

We came for late sushi on Sunday evening. We arrived at 8. There was one couple at the sushi bar and the sushi bar looked like a bomb went off. Dirty plates, mountains of dirty napkins, empty drinks just piled up. Disghusting! They kind of cleared a spot for us, shoving the mess to the end of the sushi bar. Disghusting. We sat down and asked if they could finish cleaning it up. They did, but really? The sushi chef served a yummy, fresh cucumber and crab salad. Very nice. We each ordered simple rolls: tekka maki, and kani. I have eaten sushi for 40 years. Some amazing, some just o.k. I always start with tekka maki. Tuna is my favorite. This tuna was fresh and delicious. Unfortunately the piece of tuna inside was really huge. Both ends of the roll had enormous chunks sticking out. I had to ask the sushi chef to cut it. We asked if they had baked mussles. They told us there were 2 in an order. They are a treat for us so we ordered 3 oders...6 mussles. Typical order for two. When they came out, the mussles came 2 to a plate and were enormous,dynamite style, with chopped muscles and a disghusting portion of artificial crab all mixed up. One was all either of us could eat. It is fine if this is how you serve them, but there should have been some explanation of such an over the top presentation. We paid our tab, disapointedly. We will not be back. I usedto frequent Kishi. I really don't know what happened. I'm very didapppinted. read more

I've been coming to Kishi for over 30 years and I can't recommend them highly enough! The sushi chefs are pros, and if you get to know them they'll make you some specialty creations. The portions of both the nigiri sushi and the size of the rolls are huge, and the quality of the fish is unmatched. My personal favorites are the Yakuza Roll and the fatty tuna sashimi. Teppan is also excellent, the calamari steaks, the scallops, the filet mignon... all outstanding! So what are you waiting for?? Stop scrolling and start eating some delicious sushi! read more

I love this place. The sushi is always fresh. The appetizer are a delicious and the combo are filling. It's affordable compared to other Japanese restaurants in the area and they serve larger portions. We had family visiting from Australia and some other family member took them to Kabukis, and we later took them here. They said O-Dai-Ba was much tastier. read more

My fam went here to celebrate my Uncles birthday. We've been to a bunch of Teppanyaki grills in the past, and this is so far our favorite. For birthday they do a celebration with a silly hat and some free ice cream, then they take a photo which they put on the wall. My husband had the Filet Mignon, which he said is the best steak maybe he's ever had. My uncle and daughter loved their sushi rolls, they even made a custom one for her since she is picky and she ate the whole thing. The staff was so kind and friendly about making her roll the way she wanted it, and they were also happy to accommodate my Vegetarian by grilling her an egg to eat with her rice! One think that was different from other Teppanyaki grills I have been to, was the salad dressing, other places have this orange dressing I do not like, that has too much ginger imo. The salad dressing here was DELICIOUS. They said they make it in-house. As any self respecting restaurant should do. One thing about the rolls, they. Are. HUGE. We have never seen rolls so big. Had a good time love the group photos that goes on the wall but my only complaint is is that I made the reservation two months in advance and asked if we'd be at the same table. My friends and I were in the mood for some Japanese food last night. We usually go to Kobe Japanese House but we wanted a change of scenery. Kishi Japanese Restaurant in Upland was suggested. They've apparently been there since 1982 but I had never been there before. That's where we went. There were seven of us. Several different things were ordered. I had the filet mignon. It was very good. I do wish our teppanyaki chef had used a tad bit more soy sauce while he was cooking it however. Our chef was very entertaining. He put on quite the show. Two of us were celebrating birthdays so they ended up singing to us and snapping a photo for their wall. Oh... and we got a free green tea ice cream to boot. The ambiance was cozy and authentic. The food w amazing and fresh, probably the freshest sushi I've had in a while. The menu had teppanyaki options even if you sit at a regular table but go for the show it's great from what I saw. I came for the sushi and tried the beef teriyaki. The gyoza was also great, but the star of the show is their miso soup! Next time I'll try the soba noodles. I have eaten at Kushi many times. I normally go with friends to the Teppan Grill. Excellent food always. If on the French about steamed vs. fried rice. Go for the fried. Your table chef puts on a great show before and while preparing your dinner. He will also prep and prepare your fried rice and veggies. I recommend the Sukiyaki Beef or any steak & shrimp dinner. The wait staff is good. They have a good selection of drinks hard and soft available. Be warned that during the show while the chef is warming up and cooking the flames get very warm. All the action is at the Teppan grill. You do not want to miss it. I have also eaten in the Sushi part of the restaurant. I highly recommend the California Roll. No crab salad in this roll as it is straight up crab. And the roll slices are very large. I do have to say the wait staff in this section was not all the attentive. The staff was nice but that is really the only thing positive I can say. We sat at the teppan grill to celebrate a birthday. They sing Happy Birthday and give you a hat which is fun. The food was pretty awful. We ordered a couple sushi rolls one of which should have been California roll on the inside and it came without any crab on the inside so it was cucumber on the inside. The chicken was so overcooked that it was hard to eat and nothing tastes seasoned except for the fried rice. Very little entertainment from the cook. Fireball at the beginning and the volcano was it. Over $200 for three people and didn't order anything special. Tables are pretty close to right back to back so no leg room. Was looking forward to this so pretty let down. I had the traditional spicy roll, the spicy tuna roll and my friend the resident expert had several different types of fish and one type of eel they were also delicious... The chef is incredibly keen and very intelligent he knew how to read his audience well when you're sitting up at the sushi bar this is an art that goes beyond any level customer service I've ever seen and I am truly an admirer! The service was beyond excellent I have to admit but if you would've given me one of those spicy crab rolls I would hope it would never end! They also have several other types of options for seating you can seat yourself at a table that has a hot plate where they do all the cooking in front of you that was neat but we had to go straight to the sushi bar lol I found this place to be incredible I can't see why anybody would pass this place up! read more

There's something about the sound of clanging spatulas on a stainless steel cooking surface that just says good times. I've been coming here for many years when I used to work in Ontario. I like the chill vibe and the fact that mostly locals go here. I like that it's a small business and I like that it's supporting the local economy. The sushi is good, but for us, the main draw is the teppan tables. Unlike Benihana, this place is relatively easy to get reservations and there is no pretense or build up to your meal. The chef's are entertaining and the food is quite good. The place is more intimate than small, and it's comfortable. The diners sitting next to us were cordial and friendly and we all talked about the number of kids we had... My very little one, who is 3, was a little scared of the "volcano" when it was on fire, but other than that, he, and his brothers, all enjoyed watching the chef and ate extremely well. My youngest also has an egg allergy, so the chef took care to separate his food from the eggs he cooked. Nice! Parking is ample, more so in back than in front, and it's relatively easy to get to this place since it's on a main street. If you're going east and reach Euclid, you've gone too far. The actual lobby/waiting area is pretty small, so on crowded nights, there are people waiting outside. However, the tables move fairly quickly, but I still recommend making a reservation for the teppan tables. Now that I no longer work in Ontario, and live in LA, we still take the drive out here just for this place. Yup, for the amount of time it takes to get seated at Benihana, or the trouble to get a reservation in the first place, we could drive out here and get seated AND start on our appetizer. And since gas is at a premium now, after dinner we went across the street to the VONS gas station and got my VONS discount and saved $0.30/gallon compared to LA prices. we came here because a neighbor hyped it up. Boy was he right! The fish is FRESH!! The sashimi is BIG not the little pieces you're used to getting so the price is worth it. They have a house spicy ponzu sauce that' compliments the fish very well! We had four rolls and 3 sashimi and we could not finish it. The rolls are big. Took it to go. The service was awesome!
