I had both eyes done this year most all of my family and friends had cataract surgery same place different Drs. All the same successful results . The. Pre-op and Recovery Nurse which I had 4different ones were compationate and attended to my concerns, gave me a warm blanket.Dr Beyer came to visit before and after. In the OR I had again 4different Rn,'s and techs . Same attentiveness ,calming atmosphere I would recommend this place always and thank you for brightening my world . This is a first class Ophthalmology Group! Dr. Krates is retired but he has an excellent team of doctors and technicians. I took my mom here for cataract surgery and the entire experience from start to finish was on point. No ridiculous packed waiting rooms or wait times. Initial consultation to surgery to post ops, all super smooth and seamless. These guys are very efficient. Dr. Farley is wonderful. He also sent my mom flowers after her first surgery. What a nice touch. This is a very well run office. I worked for a very well known ophthalmologist in this area for nearly a decade and I can tell you, THIS office runs like clockwork. This review is so long overdue mainly because I had to make sure I used every correct adverb, and adjective to describe my exprience at Krates Eye Center. To begin with I had a very rushed initial cataract removal from another eye surgeon. I want to name him, but I feel that is vindictive and I want to remain neutral. After that surgery, because I was severly myoptic(which I was not really aware of) I suffered from "unabalanced vision" which was absolutely horrible. I did have another cataract in the other eye, but this surgeon NEVER MENTION that this could be a problem until after I had the iniital cataract eye done. I had complications with the cataract removal, and I also had severe visual disturbances in the opposite eye. I had to dig into information and "advise my doctor" of what was happening. Needless to say we ended this on a not to good note. Especially, since he was leaving that practice in two weeks and I had to get another surgeon to perform cataract surgery on the remaining eye. I was so apprehensive, and just down right scared. I started this journey to find "the best of the best" to do this second eye, because I felt I had suffered needless and was at a complete loss. Hence, upon my reading I found a recommendation in the "Next door neighbor app" that was recommending eye surgeons. I happened to read a recommendation about Krates eye center. I took note of this and another place to consider for recommendation. I then preceeded to make the appointments. It took about five months to get an appointment with three physicians that I needed to interview. It was my appointment with Dr. Krates, that had my was "gut" shouting "this is the guy, he is confident, reassuring but not overly cocky about his ability. However, to make sure that the outcome (with the severe bllurriness and vision being unbalanced), did not result in another issue he referred me to a Retina Specialist. This was the best call he could make. He saw something in my history, and from speaking with me, that caused him to refer me out BEFORE any surgery to be considered. I went, and once again referred to another specialist at Univ Of Illinois. He advised mr to proceeded without further hesitation yet and cleared me to get the second surgery. Dr. Krates, was just simply magnificient. He knew there was possible a cogential issue and knew that this had to be addressed before he proceeded. Once the second surgery was schedule and he ran into an issue about stunting, at the time of surgery, he gently spoke to me and advised that this would not be the best thing to do because of the condition of my eye. I understood. After the surgery he apologized, and explanied to me again, why he just could not do that proceure since it might have cause my vision and recovey period would be a lot longer and the results may not be optimal. I cried and thanked God for his foresight. He was absolutely correct in his assestment. I found this out when I saw the specialist who had to diagnose my issue, which was a genetic disorder. Dr. Krates, saw something, did something and for that I am grateful that I followed my "gut" and selected this physician and his wonderful practice to give me the best vision that could have occurred. Thank you Dr. Krates and his Beautiful Staff for being just who you are. If anyone can read this long, long review.. Rest assure it took me six months to do this. This practice is the real deal... NO BS.. NO OVERSELLING PATIENTS, JUST PLAIN HONEST TRUTH WITH EXCELLENT SURGICAL RESULTS. PS.. They also send their patients an unexpected plant of lovely flowers the day after surgery. Most unprofessional and unethical medical practice. I went for a routine eye exam, which their staff confirmed during the appointment & which was fully covered by my insurance. But they billed me for services I wasn't aware of receiving, causing a hefty bill. Follow-up calls with the practice were received by most unfriendly responses, and they also gave misleading information to my health insurance provider. They were referring to clinical documentation I couldn't concur with. Overall, a very unethical/unreliable clinical practice to deal with. read more

Brought my Mom here for cataract surgery with Dr Ponakala. I couldn't be happier. He is a very approachable Dr and easy to talk to. He takes all your questions and explains things to you. My Mom has dementia and he is very patient with her. He was very respectful to her. When we had our initial consultation she was extremely nervous. He put her at ease, answered all her questions and looked her in the eye and said: the surgery is your choice when she was floundering about it. Everyone here is wonderful. The staff is also very helpful. There is 1 nurse at the Orland location who I could do without. The before mentioned dementia makes my Mom a challenge sometimes. You do the surgery in Palos, then go to Orland the next morning for a follow-up. This one nurse was always so rude and unhelpful. She would snap at my mom. I would hope that if you work in a place for cataracts that you would have some empathy with our older generation. That said, still a 5 star experience. Everyone else is amazing. The surgery itself was so easy. She has had some swelling in one of her eyes post surgery and the dr explains everything carefully and puts you at ease. follow-ups have all been great. Plus, we've never had to go back to Orland and see the mean lady. Would recommend them for anyone's parents. read more

My appointment was set a year in advance and they still can't schedule appointments better, I showed up 10 minutes early and sat and waited. I never saw the doctor. I called no make an appointment at the Orland Park office and the woman who answered the phone was less than enthusiastic and not personable at all. I brought her attitude to her attention and she said, "I don't know what you want me to do, ma'am. I am trying to answer your question." She had a monotone and was exceptionally defensive. I told her she could be more friendly and show some enthusiasm for a new patient. I told her I was going to write a review. The person who takes your information when you call or visit is integral to the reputation and growth of a business. Dr. Luke is knowledgeable and caring. Recently needed a procedure done. She explained things well and answered all questions in a respectful and pleasant way. I immediately felt comfortable and confident with her. Dr. Luke even personally called me later that evening to check on me because I only have vision in that eye that she did the procedure on and it is so important that my eye sight is kept in the best shape. I thought I will get more attention from specialist than from LensCrafter doctor. I wanted to tweak and tune my glasses prescription. well, most exam is done by doctor assistant using computer . She didn't even ask me if I need bi-focal lenses. She applied dilation drops before i was able do describe my vision problems. Of course it was too late to work on this after drops ware applied. Doctor Luke adjusted prescription by eye ( really ). I wanted to ask more questions but she was in rush to next patient. It probably was pointless anyway because I was half blind after drops. I also asked assistant about any problems with driving after drops and was told I shouldn't have any. Im lucky I came back home safe. I was sunny day and I couldn't open my eyes to see clearly. My symptoms last for next few hours. AVOID , WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY. read more

Ever have a blinding, searing pain in one of your eyes? So painful, in fact, that blinking, sunshine...hell, even *thinking* about it leads to excruciating agony? Helllllo, eye infection/ulcer/thingamajig-that's-very-bad. You horrid, hateful, spiteful little thing. I hate you. Hate you with the passion of a thousand fiery suns. So...there's that. Anyway, certain the pain would lead to an imminent and unavoidable death (or at least some permanent blindness), I called Krates Eye Center on the recommendation of my dad (who has been a patient there for years). I was able to get an afternoon appointment (same day!) with Dr. Nickolas Katsoulakis. Fast forward to the appointment: Dr. Katsoulakis explained everything in detail--from what he was looking for/at within the separate parts of the exam to the length of treatment to the actual elements of the eye itself and how it related to my issue. In short, he is EXCELLENT. Once I was in the exam room, his entry was prompt, his manner friendly and professional--overall a fantastic experience. I highly recommend Krates Eye Center, especially Dr. Katsoulakis. My only beef (and it's not really a beef, as much as just something to put out there) is that I did wait a bit prior to being called back to the exam room. Once in the exam room, my wait was minimal at best, but in the actual waiting area, it definitely took some time. (No easy feat to wait when you're contemplating clawing out your own eyeball.) But otherwise, the receptionist was friendly on the phone and check in was painless. Totally happy to give a solid five stars to Krates Eye Center. read more

Call for an appt. can't get Dr Krates so they give me Dr Porter. This arrogant guy comes in gives me his opinion without even introducing himself. Tells me I don't need surgery and to come back in a year with a prescription that was completely wrong. What???? So I went to another Dr and guess what....my surgery is in two weeks. I have been to see Dr. Nickolas Katsoulakis several times over the years, the most recent time was in April of 2013. I was concerned about numerous "floaters" in my right eye & wanted to make sure my retina was not detached. I had a thorough exam by Priscilla (the technician) and by Dr. Katsoulakis. The "floaters" were nothing serious & I was negative for glaucoma & cataracts. I did receive a slightly stronger prescription for eyeglasses for my near-sightedness. In September of 2013, I decided to get the eyeglasses made---but could not find where I had put the new Rx. I simply phoned the office & they printed up a new Rx for me. I am very satisfied w/ Dr. Katsoulakis (both he & Priscilla were extremely friendly & professional). Being able to get a Saturday appointment was also a plus. I have Dr Nick Katsoudakis as my doctor and I have seen two of the other doctors in the group and they are all very good caring people and highly trained.I would recommend this group to everybody. And if you have a problem on a weekend they have a answering service which will get a hold on one of the doctors for you to answer any problems you are having. So glad that they are there. A couple months ago, thinking I needed stronger glasses, saw my optometrist. I had been diagnosed with mild cataracts a year ago but the exam that day revealed they had gotten much worse. He referred me to Dr Krates. Yesterday I had the first eye done. Dr Krates not only has really nice office staff at both the Orland and Palos Hts offices but they run it like a well oiled machine. On time, efficient, clear instructions on top of being very friendly. His associate that I also saw, Dr Palmer was a very nice guy and answered all my questions and his exam was very thorough also. He is one of the optometrists in the group and was the one doing the measurements for the intra-ocular lens. Finally, about Dr Krates. I had my surgery at CMI SurgeryCenter in Mokena. I'm a nurse so I notice things that maybe other people don't. It was spotlessly clean and the nurses were great. They reviewed my record, asked the appropriate important questions and explained everything. Dr Krates is a surgeon that schedules his time very well--no waiting forever which is kind of common with many surgeons. He is warm, funny and very kind. Explains everything. The nurse anesthetist was great; it was done with local anesthetic and sedation. I didn't feel a thing. The whole experience has been great. I would highly recommend Dr Krates' group. read more

I had cataract surgery last April and due to complications ended up having slight swelling in the macular area. Dr. Katsoulakis still has not released me as he wants to make sure I am 100% perfect!! Dr. Krates has always been one of the best in eye care. It's such a shame that his staff is of the poorest quality. They may have quality technical skills, but communication and social ability is at a all time low. My first appointment was at the Palos location. My appointment was to see Dr. Krates himself and there were specific tests to be taken. This information was went to the office a month before the exam. When I arrive for the appointment , I was told under no uncertain terms that a tech would take care of me, NOT Dr, Krates. There was total confusion as to what test was to be taken, and the wrong test was taken and the paperwork was not sent to my Opthamologist. I had to go back to have the proper test taken and since the tech was so rude, I made an appointment for the Oak Lawn office. Much to my surprise the same tech was at this office and I received the same treatment. There was confusion as to what test was to be taken, and the tech insisted she had no paperwork. I informed her that I spoke with my Opthamologist the same morning and I gave her the exact date the paperwork was sent to this office. She stormed out of the room and came back with the paperwork that she said was "left in a drawer" in the front office. I did get to see Dr. Krates who was very professional and he had me make another appointment for six months later. Today was the latest appointment and when I arrive I was told that, the new test that was to be taken, is only done in the Palos location. No one told me that I had to go to Palos instead of Oak Lawn. I had to make special arrangements with my employer for this appointment, since they prefer that all doctor appointment should be made after work hours and now I was told I would have to reschedule.
