Right off C street on the left is this small diner. Nothing special to me. I got a chicken burger with fries. The fries were way too salty but their crispiness made up for it. My husband and his friend got a breakfast skillet and they were more than satisfied. Commenting the sausage and gravy was the best part. I also grabbed a giant cinnamon roll from their baked goods fridge for $8 to go! It's larger than my hand and coated with a thick layer of cream cheese. read more

This is a good greasy spoon diner with food that you'd expect from it as well. Stopped in for breakfast, was told it was the meal to get there. The Diner was clean and the staff was great. Ordered the Chicken Fried Steak Breakfast. It came out pretty quick, nice and hot. The eggs were done perfectly. The hash browns were plenty and crunchy. The steak was good but soaked in grease. I finished most of it. Waitress asked if it was ok, explained to her the issue and she was apologetic. Offered to get me another or something else. I declined as I was full and it wasn't THAT bad of an issue. I'll be trying it again for sure keeping a open mind. read more

I was visiting Anchorage and wanted to leave the tourist corridor and eat where the locals do. I took the 75 bus on C street and got off criss cross from the restaurant. I had Mom's Special as I was a bit homesick, so had the turkey, mashed potatoes with corn and coffee, big portion and delicious for $20. The also have an entre on the menu, a 2 lb burger w 8 pieces of cheese, 1 lb of fries and if you eat it alone in less than 45 min you get a t-shirt and your picture on the wall of fame $58.99, I wonder if anyone ever orders that LoL. This place is delicious! The day before we ate at the Snow City Cafe, and this place is SO MUCH BETTER! A nice selection of breakfast options. Friendly service and staff. I had the breakfast sandwich. The sausage patty was at least a 1/2 inch thick. My husband had eggs, bacon, and pancakes. The pancakes were perfection. I'm not sure why anyone would go to Kriners. The food tastes like it comes straight from a can or box. Even before all their anti-mask, Covid-denying shenanigans, the food was mediocre and the service was really slow. *I've been to Kriners with no issues before in past* However, went today and left with nothing but dissapointment unfortunately. Me, my boyfriend and his son with my newborn ordered 7 of the 2$ deuce burgers that were on special for the gold egg hunt. It was really busy when we arrived so a decent wait time was expected. We got there at 5pm and got drinks right away and order taken, good start. Then an hour starts to slip by. The resteraunt is emptying out and more tables start to arrive. It's now just after 6 and my newborn is starting to fuss. We watched quietly as the tables who arrived/ordered after us get their meals served. One of those tables got there a good 40 minutes after us. We still hoped for the best and asked if our food was almost done. Server says it will be right out. Okay. Well, another 15 minutes go by then we see another table who got their after us getting food served. That was the last straw. My boyfriend got up to pay for the drinks and said we're leaving because we still didn't have food and the tables who were here long after us got their orders. The server ran to us as we were going to the door apologizing, saying that the burgers were made now, and even though we didn't pay for them they wanted to give them to us for free. We declined. Such a fun and homey diner. First the menu is a newspaper with fun Alaska facts and menu items. Prices are fair and the food is good. Staff is friendly and attentive. Bacon is bomb. I've been twice (breakfast and dinner) and I think I preferred their breakfast. It's a little difficult to get in to if you don't know anchorage because of the one way streets. Turn in to the pawn shop parking lot and it will save you some time. Would recommend as a must for tourists. I don't think anchorage has that many quirky food joints but this one makes the list. read more

If one thing to note about this business is that they descend from Sal's Diner in Soldotna, I'm not entirely sure if that is something one should be proud of. I'm not really impressed with a place that looks like the majority of its stuff comes from a freezer bag, generic plain-Jane products (of which you can see stacked in the window of the kitchen; I'm sure the bread is the $2 a loaf, cheapy stuff from the Hostess shop), or maybe a can. I know this isn't fancy dining, where others places actually have a chef or a trained cook, but I think I'm just grossed out at the thought of a place selling mostly pre-formed or pre-made foodstuffs at restaurant prices. I also want to note that recently on their Facebook page, they mentioned how they're switching to new steak fries, but they still have "about 5 weeks of crinkle cuts to use up though." Uhh, that's pretty gross. I don't think I'd want to be on the receiving end of the last bits of freezer-burned fries. A restaurant that isn't cheap, and has pride in their product, wouldn't dream of holding something like that in their freezer for over a month. I've worked in restaurants. There is a system to cycling out dated stuff. I'm presuming such a thing is not present here. The one time I did go, I was underwhelmed with the service and the food. The layout is also weird; there wasn't anyone to tell you what to do. You stand around, awkwardly, wondering if you have to hover around a table to wait for it to be freed and jump in it before someone else does, or if it's a "please wait to be seated" kind of place. The server was scatterbrained, inattentive, and not very friendly. I had looked at their updated FB page to see what they had before we went, and when I ordered it, they didn't carry it anymore. The coffee was swill, but I'm supposing I shouldn't hold my hopes up high for a place like this. My companion's meal looked like something that looked identical to the corned hash you'd get from the big can at Costco. It was unimpressive, and actually pretty gross looking. Also, I don't like a side of radical politics (from EITHER side of the spectrum) with a meal. My friends and I headed to Kriner's after the UAA gear swap yesterday. I was really excited to have a new diner in town and wanted to see how it fared. The parking lot was almost full when we got there at about 10 am, but even so there were three empty tables (for four) and a booth opening up as well, so plenty of seating inside. It was clean and comfy and reminded me of the diners in the tiny towns in the Midwest where I grew up, so I felt at home. Their menu looks like a newspaper with Alaska facts on the two outer pages as well as information about the family who owns and runs the place. I liked that a lot. They mention that they are conservatives and there's no French toast on the menu (frankly, I just found it amusing- are we still hating the French?), and while I could forever do without anything approaching politics while I'm trying to eat, I got over it when I saw the prices. *Such* good prices! A three egg breakfast with hash browns and toast for only $5! And when you order coffee with the meal, it's only 50 cents! I can't think of another place in town other than McDonald's where you can get breakfast that cheap. And you aren't going to get food this tasty or this much of it at MickeyDs. The hash browns were perfectly cooked- crispy yet soft in the middle and not greasy. I was ridiculously impressed and ended up eating so many that I couldn't finish my eggs. I got the meal which included bacon (around $8) and was slightly disappointed with my bacon. It was not undercooked, but was floppy rather than crispy. But I also didn't specify crispy, so I'll ask for that next time. The bacon itself was not too fatty and there was a ton of it- I think six medium-thick strips. Way more than I could eat. Snow City Cafe is still my favorite bacon in town, but this is runner-up. I got a side of the biscuits and gravy just to try it. I am pretty particular about biscuits and gravy. I have yet to find someone in town that does it perfectly, but Kriner's does it the best I've seen up here and I'll be getting it when I go back. It was a little greasy, but proper biscuits and gravy *should* be. It was the right color, the sausage was chopped up nicely and there was plenty of pepper in it. High marks, though I'm still trying to find something as good as my Dad's. The eggs were cooked perfectly (also not greasy), as was the toast. Those things shouldn't be hard to do, but from what I've seen, it takes a well-run kitchen to get it right every time. They have managed that even though they are new (though the family is not new to running restaurants). No problems with service either. They were around to our table a *bunch* of times for coffee refills and our waitress paid us plenty of attention without bothering us too much. All in all an excellent diner and really great prices. The lunch and dinner menu also looked good, but I was focused on breakfast so I didn't pay much attention to those. I'll have to check them out when I go back. read more

I've been meaning to hit up Kriner's, and I finally had the chance to do so today. The menu venue looked strangely familiar, and when I started chatting to my server, I learned why. Kriner's has a connection with another restaurant on the Kenai Peninsula with similar newspaper style menus...cool beans. It was the cusp between breakfast and lunch, and I chose the latter. The newsprint menu teased me with "freshly roasted turkey" for its sandwiches and open-faced turkey sandwich. Again, I chose the latter to see how it compared with my Homer favorite. Ding! Great choice! The turkey was indeed like Thanksgiving leftovers covered in a gravy that was just right. The mashed potatoes were fresh as well evidenced by the big chunks of potato therein. Listen up, Anchorage-ites: Kriner's is what we like to call in my household, "Da Bomb." Now, I haven't been there a buttload of times and I haven't had their breakfast. Perhaps, one day. There's really only one reason needed to go to Kriner's and that's for the Andy's Awesome Burger. I am a burger lover. I'm a white-bread American and I loves me some burger. I'm always looking out for the next one to top the last one. Currently, Andy's Awesome Burger is wearing the king's crown as the best of Anchorage. Yes, that is correct. No, I don't want to hear about the burger you think is better when you haven't even tried this one. There's a few spots I haven't hit in Anchorage yet, that talk mad smack about having "the best" burger, but until I visit and take the Pepsi challenge, Andy's Awesome Burger takes the taco (pun...intended?). Okay, so let's talk about this mutha: Perfectly cooked burger with crispy french onions, barbecue sauce, bacon, and holy-freakin-awesome, Batman...clumpy, melted, oozing jalapeno cheese that slides off the burger in a beautiful symphony of gooey burger goodness. It truly "makes" the burger and is the signature ingredient that puts the "awe" in awesome for this here burger. If you come for lunch and haven't had this thing, then you don't need to even look at the menu. Ask for the awesome burger and wait for greatness. My wife has had two of the other burgers, both of which I sampled and were made to perfection. I still preferred Andy's, but that doesn't disqualify the others as not measuring up. They do. I get the onion rings, which taste like good onion rings. Nothing special, just good ol' onion rings. They have those mega-tall drink cups, which is pretty awesome when you don't feel like playing the "attention-getting" game every time your straw makes that "empty-cup" sucking sound. Don't show up if you are looking for a "light" meal. Take your ass to New Sagaya or something. You come here for chow. That goes in your belly. So, y'know, show up with some room. Because you're an idiot if you don't get dessert. The chocolate cream pie is like something they'd serve while waiting in line to get into heaven. The others look just as great. Mosey on up and take a look at the pie fridge and drool at the opportunity. The massive cinnamon rolls look amazing, but I'm saving up to try one. You gotta take greatness in waves. The interior is clean and nice, much nicer than a "typical" diner. This struck me right away and made me feel at ease and took away my worries of witnessing a fight break out or getting shanked in the bathroom. Servers are nice and friendly, food is prompt, and all is well in the world. I recommend this place to all my friends...including you, dear reader. This place rocks like Motley Crue when they were singing Girls, Girls, Girls. Don't hesitate to visit and soak up some greasy spoon that's got some heart and soul in the menu. read more

Honestly, go for the menu. It's actually modeled after a newspaper, featuring many "interesting" articles and quotes about politics. Graciously, the menu states that all opinions are welcome, but let's just say I have a few hundred friends in San Francisco that might walk out before getting to the menu options. If Obama goes to Ben's Chili Bowl in Washington DC for street cred, then this is where Sarah Palin goes to preach to the choir. As for the food... it's good, pretty standard diner fare. The pancakes are nice and crispy and the other breakfast items are creative and gut-busting. I've only been for breakfast, but I hear all menu items are good (from my boyfriend, who loves diner food). My husband and I arrived for lunch and the place was packed, but lucky for us a table just opened up and we were seated right away. We were given the menu, which is a cute newspaper-like menu with factoids about Alaska and quotes from important personages that strike the owners' fancy. The server was helpful in providing recommendations. I also had a lot of recommendations from friends and coworkers who are already practically regulars. We received our order quickly. I ordered the Alaskan burger and the husband had the open-faced turkey sandwich. Delicious! The entire place just evokes mom-style home cookin'. Good food, good service and good prices. Okay, I guess I'm the differing opinion here. And given that I'm neither a local nor a staunch conservative, some of you reading this may very well be happy that I've already shipped my you-know-what back to LA LA land. Now, I'm all for kitsch. The term "tchotchkes" is amongst my favorite takeaways from growing up in a semi-Yiddish speaking household. So when my friend said that Kriner's was all about old-school Americana, I was game. Unfortunately, there's too much effort put on being over-the-top on the Americana side and not much else. We waited about 15 minutes for our table for a late breakfast. There's not a real "front" or "back" to the place, so we were semi hunched over others' tables but there was some bench seating. While waiting to be seated, I perused the menu and viewed the place. Now this is no '50s diner. In fact, it was just founded in 2010. So while the paper looks old and there's some of that old school feel, there's no actual old school. Which is totally fine and all. Not so fine is that for some reason they carpeted the whole place. Given the debris under the table next to me (spilled fries, paper, etc), it seems like carpeting is amongst the worst choices for a restaurant - let alone a newer greasy spoon. And yes - haha on the American fries and American toast (Why couldn't it be Freedom Fries? Je ne c'est pas.) I opted to get eggs (over easy) and a hot cake instead. The egg was on the greasy side and the hot cake was overly drenched in butter. Maybe it's because we had just come from the state fair the day before, having eaten nothing but fried foods, but it was far too heavy for breakfast. I think we all took naps after the meal - and no, none of us attempted the big burger. Service was slow - I don't know who my server was - I think it was a mix of people, which is strange for a diner type setting. I guess I just don't "get" the place, but given some of the other delicious breakfasts that I tried while in Anchorage, this isn't on my list of places to return to when I plot my next visit to the Last Frontier. read more

Came a couple of times over the years and thought the food was A-Ok. Recently, I ordered the hamburger steak dinner and thought it was decent. Strangely, the best part of the meal was the corn. It tasted fresh. Another person ordered the tater tots and they were better than Spenard Roadhouse's tots. I think it's just the taco seasoning, but I liked them a lot. We have friends who rave about this place, and since we drive by it almost everyday we figured we should give it a try. However, If you are like us, let me just tell you to skip it. The food was terribly bland and very overpriced. Yes, the portions are huge, but tasteless. I am quite sure my hash browns were of the pre-frozen variety and the eggs weren't real eggs. Went here once before but it was so long ago, not sure why I haven't been back more often! Outstanding service, my family was meeting up with a family member for his birthday and he is special needs and just not quite all there mentally. The server was so understanding and helpful and friendly to him (and to all of us really) but I was so impressed with how he handled our family member who was at times hard to understand and a bit difficult. What a Godsend. So refreshing to see other people who treat everyone equally and with such respect. Now to the food- it was so good. I just had a cheeseburger with their special sauce and potato salad which was very tasty. I ate some of my sons fries (he got chicken fingers and fries) and they had some honey mustard which I couldn't get enough of. The server even brought out extra fries which I ended up taking home. Took a burger home for my husband (one of their specialty burgers) which my brother and mom also had and they just love it- they get it every time they're here. Cant remember which one but I think it's the most popular one. I will definitely be back sooner than later and I hope to see that server again so I can thank him again for making our family members birthday dinner so special. read more

Perfectly light and airy but dense enough to withstand the gravy. My brother said his skillet was great too. The staff was friendly and quick. It was a hopping place! I was craving corn hash & my boyfriend wanted pancakes so we decided to give this place a shot. He got the "Teds big breakfast" which was huge pancake, eggs, biscuit & gravy, sausage & hash browns for a good price but the star of the show was my corn hash it was delicious! homemade like my mama use to make it I was impressed. My family & I went to Kriner's Diner on a Sunday around 1 PM for a late breakfast. We had heard they had recently opened and were excited to try a classic diner style restaurant in Anchorage. We were very happy with our choice! The dining room was very full and we had to wait about 5 minutes, but, it was not a problem. Very bright, cheerful and welcome greetings from all the staff. As we were seated, our server took our drink orders, several types of juices, milk and coffee were offered. We were told beer and wine would be avaliable in the near future. We scanned the menu and had a lot of fun reading about the Kriner family and some Alaska trivia. Trying to settle on what to eat was a challenge. Prices are VERY family friendly, our group of four each had our own meal and beverage for less than $40.00, which in Anchorage is a great deal! I had the three egg breakfast plate with sourdough toast, crisp and golden and two slices, many places only give you one slice of sourdough, hash browns and bacon. Lots of bacon! Five slices if I remember. The eggs were perfect, over medium, great for dunking toast and still held up well. Hash browns were also golden brown and great for mixing the egg with. My son had biscuits and sausage gravy and was raving about it. Very fluffy and light biscuit, and gravy that wasn't loose and runny. Pretty meaty too. All said, I think I've found my new weekend breakfast place and can't wait to go back to try the hand pressed burgers and Chicken fried steak. The food was really good and quite plentiful. We ended up buying gallon bags so we could take the leftovers from our reindeer sausage skillet back with us to Seattle it was that good. It's a diner and they serve diner food, so don't expect anything too creative. What they do offer, they do well. The place was busy which is usually a good sign for a Tuesday lunch. Based on the other reviews here, I had to Andy's Awesome Burger, and it was in fact, awesome! I hate myself a little afterwords for eating the whole thing, but man was it tastey. A homemade bun (which was key to holding it together), well cooked burger, bacon, BBQ sauce, a blend of cream cheese, jalapenos, and cheddar cheese all combine to create a greasy gutbomb of perfect-ness. read more
