Ticked away in a little complex without 79 visibility along with a couple of other places that don't seem to get much traffic either. Finally made our first visit so we could try "the best fish & chips" in the Austin area. I was surprised how big it was, they have a patio, a bar area and lots of tables I was shocked as from the outside it looks tiny. Service was fantastic which was shocking with them closing soon. The service was enough to want me to go back hopefully for us in this area they end up somewhere close by as I know how hard it is to find good workers. Pretzels were good! Onion rings were our favorite! Their version of the Philly was just okay, was very plain with not much flavor hubby didn't even finish half. But the star of the show was the fish and chips. My son was over the moon! Couldn't even finish half of it and he wanted to haha. Sad to see they will be closing their doors but hopefully the owner has something else up his sleeve as they were onto something with this place.

The batter, however, had little to no crispness. That's a problem, mate. Fish and chips needs that crunch. Without it, you're just eating a lovely piece of cod wearing a soggy jacket. I also fancied the bacon clam chowder. Looked brilliant: thick, creamy, hearty. Unfortunately, it had about as much personality as a damp tea towel. I kept waiting for the bacon or clams to make themselves known. Nothing. The cod bites redeemed things a bit. Nice and crispy, and ironically closer to what I wanted from the main attraction. Credit where it's due, the gentleman manning the truck was a respectable bloke. Friendly, attentive and running a proper little operation. I took the food home and ate it in my kitchen, so I can't really comment on the atmosphere or whether there was anywhere to linger. It was a straightforward grab-and-go setup: order at the window, collect your food and head off to eat it wherever you fancy. Not rubbish. Not brilliant. Just... alright.

Perfectly made and absolutely screams fresh cut & fried. There's only one problem with them. They tasted fishy. That's because they fry them in the same fryer as the fish is fried. Not my kind of expectation with perfectly golden crisps. I would advise using a stand alone fryer for potatoes only please. Knox my server was very kind and hospitable & we enjoyed talking about the best hot sauce in the world which is found here, Belize's Marie Sharp's. That's a real winner to accompany your meal. Garbo's is classy but to get lobster which is what they're known for, you're going to have to pay for it. It was unfortunately a higher ticket item than I was willing to go for. Sitting along the marina with boats gently coming and going, The Lighthouse has all the ingredients for an afternoon you don't want to end. Unfortunately, our experience never quite found its sea legs. We arrived with a party of five and walked up to the host stand where several young employees greeted us... sort of. We let them know there were five of us. They nodded. That was it. No "What's your name?" No "We'll get you on the list." No "It'll be about a 30-minute wait." Just... nodding. As more guests started filing in behind us, I finally walked back up and asked if they needed our name or phone number. The group looked at one another like I'd asked them to solve a calculus equation. Eventually someone located a scrap of receipt paper and a marker to write our information down. I'm choosing to believe it was someone's first day because otherwise, it was a genuinely confusing start. The patio was bustling, but considering Texas had apparently opened the Gates of Hades that afternoon, our group requested indoor seating. A plus? There was only one table seated inside and they were just having drinks. We thought it would be a very short wait. About thirty minutes later, one of the hosts finally asked, "Would y'all be okay sitting inside?" Our entire table answered in unison: "YES." Once seated, things improved... at least initially. The dining room overlooking the marina is comfortable, with large windows that let the view do most of the decorating. The televisions were on without dominating the room, making it easy for our family to settle in and enjoy something we hadn't done in years--simply sit around one table together and catch up. Thankfully, we had plenty to talk about because the food took a while to arrive. My brother and I decided to split The Shipwreck, the restaurant's signature sandwich. On paper, it sounded incredible: fried chicken, fried cream cheese, ham, bacon, lettuce, tomato, homemade blueberry jam, and an order of their truffle fries. That's a sandwich that practically dares you not to order it. Unfortunately, reality didn't quite match the menu. The biggest disappointment was the "homemade blueberry jam." It wasn't jam. It tasted exactly like canned blueberry pie filling. That one ingredient completely threw off the sandwich for me. (thankfully, just in case, we had asked for it on the side) Beyond that, it was... fine. Not bad. Not memorable. Just an average fried chicken sandwich wearing a few extra accessories in hopes of becoming something special. For more than twenty dollars, I wanted something that made me think about it on the drive home. Instead, I mostly thought about how much potential it had. The truffle fries were another miss. They arrived barely warm and were cold before we made it halfway through the basket. The promised truffle flavor was faint, there were a few shavings of Parmesan, and instead of the garlic aioli listed on the menu, we were served plain mayonnaise. Meanwhile, our server proved elusive. After taking our order and delivering the food, she seemed to disappear entirely. When she finally resurfaced to greet the table beside us, we took the opportunity to ask for our check before she vanished again. To be fair, two members of our party ordered the chicken fried steak and both enjoyed it, so there were certainly bright spots on the menu. But as a whole, none of us walked away particularly impressed. It's disappointing because The Lighthouse has so much working in its favor. The location is wonderful. The view is exactly what you'd hope for on Lake Travis. The atmosphere invites you to slow down and stay awhile. Now it just needs food and service that rise to meet the setting. As for me? The Lighthouse didn't quite guide me safely to shore. Next time, I'll be looking for another place to dock in search of a better meal.

Riley's was celebrating St. Patrick's Day on Saturday, March 14 with live music, Irish food, Guinness, dancers, bagpipes, etc. No cover charge and many families were present (family friendly times). The excitement and enthusiasm was contagious! You could hear the roar of laughter and the occasional Irish call out. It is rare you can have so much clean fun with no fear of violence. The League Tavern is a gastropub…read more "Gastropub". That word is so 2010's. A decade ago calling yourself a "gastropub" was the coolest thing in the hospitality industry. Now, it is a lost artifact of another decade, along with Swedish House Mafia and Britney Spears. The League calls itself a retro reminder of the eating clubs of the 1920's and 1930's. It is pretty damm good as a gastropub. It would not really want to be an eating club of the Prohibition era. Menus in that era could be pretty awful. Mashed parsnips. Liver and onions. Greens that have been cooked to death. Tough steaks. Low quality lager beer. The Indian Puddings were all right. The fish was great if it was fresh. I wish they would bring back Welsh Rarebit. But the League sticks to a contemporary menu ... And I am glad they do. Their contemporary dishes are just great. I had a faro salad with grilled shrimp on top. The faro salad was everything I would want a grain salad to be. (I have had some awful tabboulehs and quinoa salads in my time.) The shrimp were completely lovely. Prices are high - but that is what comes with being a gastropub. The concept is: Pay more. Eat higher quality. The Lakeway market will certainly support the League in the prices it wants to charge. The selection on the menu - and for that matter the selection at the bar - is fairly restricted. Having a small menu is not a necessary correlate of being a gastropub. Some gastropubs offer you an expansive range of choices. But careful management of the menu choices means that each and every dish can be polished to a high degree of execution finesse. Practice makes perfect. My guess is that the League envisions itself as a neighborhood place - albeit a rich neighborhood place. Their customers are likely to be regulars. The regulars order their favorite dishes over and over. I myself like my bars and grills to be Cheaper, Funkier and With bigger selections on the menu and at the bar itself. So the League is not exactly my style. But what they do, they do well. They are expanding, opening more branches in more locations. They can do this because the League fills a real need in the Lakeway-Bee Cave market. If a Lakeway resident were to invite me to be their guest at the League Tavern, I would be happy to accept that invitation. Especially if they were picking up the check.
