Was there on a Friday night. We called before going in asking if they need a reservation or they have a table. They said, we have table for two, and you will be fine if you arrive in 15-30 minutes. When we were there few minutes later, we have been told there is no table, unless we wait 45 minutes. The guy was very very rude, telling us he doesn't care who we talked to, and you have to go to somewhere. It's ok not having a table, but being rude is unacceptable. I don't think they serve a good food with this attitude. I would recommend against this place. read more

We stopped by this Thai place during our Monterey Bay trip. Overall, it was pretty decent. We tried four dishes: Tom Yum Soup, Yum Khoong Salad, Rad Nah Noodles, and Garlic and Pepper Beef. Portions were good, and the prices seemed fair. The food was okay, though the Tom Yum Soup was a bit too salty and didn't have that tangy kick I was hoping for. The other dishes were alright. Service was good, and the staffs were friendly. Just a heads up--they prefer cash, and if you pay by card, they charge a bit extra. 4 dishes and 1 beer - family of 4 (2 adults 2 kids) around $120 (paid cash, tip included). Krua Thai is a bit hidden on the smaller part of Munras Avenue. We decided to give this place a try because we were staying on this side of town during this visit. I loves Thai foods but this place just not enough Thai flavors add to the foods and ingredients are not fresh! I came here on Friday night for dinner after July 4th weekend holiday. The restaurant looks half busy as time goes by. Services were quick to order but foods took awhile even the restaurant was not busy. The pad Thai was bad, the noodles need to be fresh and not enough flavors to it. The papaya salad was not fresh either. Thai foods are needs to be spicy, sour, sweet and savory in every dishes. Had dinner at this wonderful Thai restaurant in Monterey California. I tried the crispy duck dish, and it was absolutely incredible. The duck was cooked to perfection. The sauce was delicious , the vegetables and rice were also cooked perfectly. The entire dish worked together really nicely. Had dinner at Krua Thai. Wish we had not. Starters took 40 mins to arrive, papaya salad they were out of, ditto for fresh spring rolls. So basically 40 mins for shrimp in the basket and some pot stickers. Reason given that there was a large DoorDash order. Our suspicion is the server never passed on the order. No apology beyond, DoorDash excuse. Food can best be described as nondescript Thai food. Ding ding Thai frozen food from Trader Joe's would most probably have tasted better. I had Singapore noodles. Usually these are stir fried to give them added crispiness and taste. My ones these were boiled , curry powder thrown on top and bingo, plated and sent out. Others had pad Thai- a gooey blob - and fried rice , the latter nothing to write home about. Again if you claim to be a Thai restaurant and can't do fried rice......As I mentioned, ding ding food from Trader Joe's would have been nicer and set you back less than the $200 we paid. Poker face, slow (non) service. Dishes ok. Nice decors. But what a failure. We came twice in fact in July and August, for lunch and for dinner; both times dining in. First time: not a bad experience; semi-attentive service. Delicious dishes. Second time: complete failure: we were ignored. Took forever to place an order. Waited for 75 minutes, still did not receive our dishes (other tables had come and gone, meanwhile). When we chased up, they said it'll take a while. They even gave us a poker face. No apologies whatsoever. Even the tom yum soup! Soup is always pre-made, I know that for fact. They just needed to go to the kitchen and get it. They completely forgot about us. As you can see I rarely (almost never) give 1 star. I have taken into consideration the struggles of restauranteurs during and in the wake of the pandemic. With all that in mind, Krua Thai still deserves to be called out given how they treated us. First time: I had their tom yum noodle which was delicious. The pumpkin curry was also very unique (first time we got this dish in a Thai restaurant). Second time: I got their Singapore noodle which was so so; quite dry to be honest. Curry shrimp was nice. By the way, they still have an ugly sign up front talking about the pandemic. The stupid signs says you aren't allowed to order more than one dishes for lunch due to the pandemic. They talk about waiting the return of "normal" times. In case you missed it, these are now normal times! Stop using the pandemic as an excuse for non service. read more

It has been several months since we were last here for lunch. I must say I was immediately put off when the host did not seat me where I wish to be seated, and instead set us directly behind the front door. There was not a lot of people in there were plenty of other tables. It did not seem like an unreasonable request. I ordered the Albarino and it was a perfect pairing. I ordered the Pad Se Ew What was delivered was a shrimp curry. Our host apologized and put my Pad Se Ew in next. He told me that the curry dish was on him, and there would be no charge. I actually tasted. It was delicious and told him it was no need to put the Pad Se Ew order in. He apologized and said it was already in, and not to worry. My guest ordered the chow mein. There was plenty of food. She had the beef with the chow mein, and was very happy. I will still return, as I am getting more familiar with Thai food. read more

Super anal about their policy and rude staff We got a reservation at Krua at 6:15 on our road trip to Caramel by the Sea. We were a group of 6 and called ahead. The receptionist/ server said they have one dish per person policy, which was fine. When we showed up the server was super anal about the rule and pressed that it has to be one big dish per person when my husband asked if appetizers would count. We were traveling with our parents so asked them to accommodate as they don't eat much. To this the staff was super rude and said thank you for coming. We are big foodies and have traveled enough and this rule is unheard of. I wouldn't recommend this place even if the food is good. read more

I love Thai food it is my favorite ethnic food. I was in Monterey and decided to find a Thai place for lunch. I found them on yelp and walked there as it was about 0.4 mile from my hotel and I didn't want to hassle with parking. had their lunch special of Penang chicken medium spicy with a Thai ice tea. Their food quality was excellent and the taste was wonderful! The service was great too. It is a small restaurant with a nice open air ambiance. Best Thai food in the peninsula in my opinion. The service is great, and it's a very nice restaurant. My preference is for the Pad Kra Pow with chicken (and they remove the onions and carrots at my request). I brought a friend who lived for some time in Thailand and he really enjoyed the food. My husband and I are locals of Monterey for almost six years now, and Krua Thai is undoubtedly our favorite restaurant in the area. The staff are very friendly, and I've overheard them providing well-thought recommendations to newcomers. The food itself is incredible, often providing a blend of textures as well as levying its ingredients to soak up all the robust flavors and spices - which, by the way, add to the flavor profile rather than overwhelm it (as long as you don't go too overboard). Speaking of spice, if it's your first time I recommend erring on the lower side of the scale and perhaps requesting spices on the side. You can always add more later, and it can get quite hot! I've tried most things on the menu at this point, and the prices are about what you'd expect for a restaurant in this kind of economy. That said, the portions are very, very generous! I doubt you'll go hungry here! While there's usual Thai staples like Pad Thai and a rainbow of curries, be sure to give their house specialties a try. I've yet to be disappointed there! They've somehow made a Beef Salad work, of all things! I hope this convinces you to give Krua Thai a try! It's a shame this place doesn't get more recognition for how good it is! read more

Krua Thai is by no small margin my favorite restaurant in the Monterey area. When I first moved here I was amazed at how mediocre the food was at many restaurants, but Krua Thai has never disappointed. I've been to the restaurant many times and sampled a good portion of their menu and loved every single dish. My favorites are the panang and mussaman curries as well as the golden chicken fried rice. They have specials these days too, usually a dish called Khao Soi, and it is delicious as well. The servers are always attentive to us and make sure everything is good even though we have never had an issue or made a complaint. They treat us like friends and are happy to see us every time. Also, the prices are reasonable for the quality and portion sizes as well. It's not a cheap, budget meal, but you more than get what you pay for. I've read a few other reviews about the staff being rude which I have never seen if you're calm and reasonable with them. Their "rudeness" is more like they don't tolerate entitlement and mistreatment of their employees, so if you treat them like people rather than servants you should be fine. read more

A great spot for Thai eats in Monterrey! They had quick service and the ambiance inside was nice -- we had stopped by after hiking at Point Lobos to fuel up. The food was pretty solid, though I liked some dishes more than others, and overall they had large portion sizes that are great for sharing: Egg Rolls -- these were alright! They tasted good but nothing super special about them. Thai Tea -- a classic done right! Pad Kee Mow -- a fairly popular order which was good but lacking a bit of flavor. I got the medium spice but maybe a spicier version would be better. The noodles were chewy and good, though! Spicy Eggplant with Tofu -- by far my favorite thing! Went for a friend's birthday had a very large group of 25. Staff was extremely attentive not only to us but the rest of a the very busy restaurant. Best Thai food Ive had locally in a very long time. They have all the classics, some of their own signature dishes, menu is not too overwhelming and big, and the food is delicious, fresh and reasonably priced. Great location, plenty of parking, not a very big place but plenty of tables. Get there early or plan to wait. Not sure if they take reservations. Pre-COVID, I doubt I would have given more than 2.5-3 stars for two main reasons: flavor consistency and timing. First time was a Friday night with an obvious packed dining room. I had called in an order (and eventually learned it is their default pick up time) and was told 25 minutes. I not only waited outside for an extra hour but when I got home shortly to finally partake of the food, it was an overcooked mess. Luckily, driven by cravings and a laziness to drive, I once again gave them a chance and ordered the same set. They called me in 15 minutes and the food was surprisingly really good. Then COVID struck and they became consistently better in food quality. They still quote "25 minutes". ALWAYS, whenever, wherever, whatever I order. It doesn't matter how complicated my order gets (knowing the cook times) or when in the day (peak or non-peak) or when in the week it is. It is always "25 minutes". But as I've come to learn, just hang close to the area and run errands until they call. Their timing is still all over the place. My guess is they work with a small kitchen setup or prep a smaller mise en place focusing only on their popular orders. That said, I've grown particularly fond of their Thai BBQ chicken, fried fish cakes, and Golden Chicken Fried Rice and would come back for these three any given day. read more
