My wife and I are not the biggest Kubel's fans to begin with but we thought we would give it another shot. Our waitress was obviously new. (She couldn't open a bottle of wine - didn't know how the corkscrew worked. ) When we asked if the Salmon was gluten free or could be made gluten free, the waitress said she would ask. When she returned we were told that the kitchen "didn't know"). I tried to press her, asking how could the kitchen not know the ingredients in what they were cooking but we decided to give up and order a burger and a wedge salad with grilled chicken. While the burger and fries were good, the wedge came drenched with about 1/2 bottle of clue cheese dressing. A few pieces of dry grilled chicken came on a separate plate. We will not return for a while if ever. read more

Best grouper tacos I've had outside of Florida. Three fried grouper tacos served on soft flour tortillas supported by some house slaw. The toppings: mango jalapeño salsa and a nice drizzle of chipotle mayo. Didn't even bother with the side of rice since the tacos were sufficiently filling. Don't order the clam chowder under any circumstances. It's watery, pasty not taste whatsoever and a minuscule amount of minced clams from a can. This is sad because the bay is right across the street with professional clamber willing to sell their items if you had a chef who knew how to make it. I had the $20 lobster roll which was a bit small but decent. Remember, don't order the clam chowder. Let it die on the menu and maybe they'll do something about it. read more

Go to LBI for vacation at least once a year and this is the place we go to for dinner, went with some friends and the food and the service was absolutely wonderful. The atmosphere is nice the staff is friendly food is great. We will definitely be back. By the way I had the scallops and they were amazing. read more

I had what they call New England clam chowder. It was the worst clam chowder I have ever had. It was pasty and tasteless. I don't know what's happening with this venerable eatery, but the quality seems to have slipped. I have been going there for 60 years. I really really really wanted to like Kubel's in Barnegat Light. With their long history, almost 90 years and their inclusion on the Anthony Bourdain Trail, there is no reason this should not be one of the better spots in the Jersey Shore. Sadly I feel ownership and especially the chef/cooks are just going through the motions. So I went on a Thursday afternoon, it wasn't busy, but what you expect for the off season. After being ignored by the waiter Justin, the bartender, who was extremely irritable, but was friendly to the locals that she knew, finally took my order. Started with the New England Clam Chowder, super super scalding hot, makes me think microwave, i could be wrong. They might as well call this Cream of Potato because the clams were so small they virtually disintegrated into the chowder. The soup itself was bland and had zero flavor, I even commented that I don't think they used salt and pepper in the kitchen. Next was the Fish & Chips, figured Jersey Shore, right down the block from a huge fish market, its going to be good. Boy was I wrong, it was your standard fare, pre battered, frozen, fish filets, that you get from Restuarant Depot, sad just sad. No flavor and 4 small mini fillets, fries were good but they to were the pre seasoned frozen variety. The cole slaw that came with my meal was literally 15 strands of shredded white and purple cabbage piled under the fish, no dressing, no seasoning, no nothing. I didn't even realize that was supposed to be cole slaw till afterwards when I looked at menu again. I understand the pricing as you have to make up for the slow months at the shore, that I can accept, but to just go through the motions on the food for a place with such a storied history is a disgrace. The kitchen staff should be completely revamped as either they lost any passion whatsoever, or just cutting corners to save money. read more

My mom had the scallops. She was still raving about them on the way home. She said they were so fresh and buttery tasting. We will definitely be back. In short, this place is outdated and overpriced. Have been a frequent customer of Kubel's for a number of years now. However, the most recent visit may have been my last. Wait staff here is very nice, but that's about it. The menu items look great, but the quality and taste just isn't there. We ordered 2 pasta dishes (shrimp & linguine as well as the veal parm). The meal was just overall very, very bland. Nothing here was fresh: the bread (although served warm) was very stale, salads looked like they were made back in the 1990s, and the pasta sauce tasted like the bottom shelf stuff you'd find at the grocery store. For ~$30 each entree you'd expect something a little better than what we got. Overall, for a restaurant in a nice location on the bay, I expected something better. Sorry, we don't agree with Anthony. The food was OK. The crab cakes were good, not a lot of filler. Came with some type of sauce, and dinner included a salad, which was, eh, salad. I also had the white clam chowder which had zero clam flavor. I did detect a few slivers of clam, but it was a bland cream of potato soup. The entire dinner was nothing to rave about. My family has been coming to Kubels for over 30 years (or more). Pre-Bourdain's discovery, Kubels has always been the local's place. We had a house in Barnegat light and Kublel's was always somewhere the family could go for really good fresh, quality food and seafood, without pretension, with the kids,and with friendly service. Ever since i was little, i remember the charred grilled burger being so satisfying, i never quite placed it, was it the grill, or the bun or the the jersey tomato crushing into the charred goodness. My mom would always get the scallops which are literally fresh off the boat across the street. Well, tonight i came in for a take out meal after the beach. I was craving the foods of childhood and well not going to lie, summer is all about grill foods for me, and that blackened charred flavor. I came into kubels on a whim not having called. I saw they had my beloved onions rings and orderd with nice server a beautiful burger on which i added sauteed onions and mushrooms ( my favorite topping) and subbed onion rings for fries While waiting, i surveyed some amazing old photos on the woodwalls, including photos of Anthony Bourdain himself, local fishermen, and boats. The lovely hostess was so friendly and after conversing, it turned out we were some the same hometown. Also, the charming server got my order perfect in 10min and even included some bbq sauce on side . Its like she read my mind because i love bbq with my rings:) Burger was amazing, so thick, beautiful blackened/grilled flavor, and onion rings were best I've had in a while. I loved knowing that after all these years, Kubels is still the same, somewhere where people care. Somewhere you can strike up conversation and get quality meal without too much fluff. Wait list is a bit confusing but they did seat our party of 6, (4 adults two kids ) within 10 minutes of the time they said we would be seated. Food very consistent and everyone in our group was pleased. Our server Guliano was very friendly and was particularly attentive to my grandson & got his order out very quickly. Kubel's is a top tier, consistent, and absolutely worthy restaurant to visit. The atmosphere is relaxed, fun and well kept. Our host was very sweet and quick once we arrived, and the Manager welcomed us as we sat. The service is very respectable. This is all worthy in it's own right, however, the food is unmistakably quality. Various seafood dishes, the classic K Burger, and cool drinks to summarize this great menu. This is an absolute staple of Barnegat Light and I'm excited to go back again. read more

We went here last night for dinner, it was my wife's choice, I wasn't thrilled with the menu. The food turned out to be very good, I was surprised and pleased. To start my wife has wanted fried clams, they weren't on the menu but the kitchen was very accommodating and fried up some clams and served them with French fries. For dinner she had tuna which she loved, I had a seafood quesadilla with scallop, shrimp and other seafood. There was over an hour wait for a table even though we saw open tables all through our wait. Curious about that. read more

So, so gross -- my lips still feel greasy an hour later. We really wanted to like this place (Anthony RIP), but instead got a disappointing reminder of what it's like to eat at a restaurant that truly just doesn't care anymore. TLDR; oily, underseasoned, doesn't match the menu description, shoulder-to-shoulder seating, bad service, no no no We should have taken the hint and left as soon as we read the bottom of their printed menu (and I wish I'd taken a picture) -- "we use nuts in our cooking process" -- whatever that means -- and we are "NOT responsible for food allergies". Oh also, if you're gluten intolerant, you should bug off too. My poor shy 13 year old, who has done a great job of following up her food orders with "oh and I have a peanut/tree nut allergy", looked at me wide-eyed and said, "what does that mean??" (As visions of EpiPens danced through her head.) P.S. you can't have anything that's fried here if you have an allergy -- "it's all fried together". (Guess that excludes the vegetarians too.) Ok, so aside from the intolerance of food allergies and dietary restrictions, everything just exudes apathy. We ordered the steamed clams appetizer. The clams were gritty/dirty (yum! sand!) and were served sitting in their own cooking water. (What?!) The online menu -- the one with actual prices -- said that the clams came "with breadstick", so I expected at least one dough-based product -- nada. The house vinaigrette looks like store-bought and tastes like vegetable oil. No really, ONLY vegetable oil, like my salad was a giant pile slick. (I grabbed the red wine vinegar from my husband, which kinda fixed it... somewhat.) The broiled scallops entree said, "broiled with a lemon buerre blanc and topped with seasoned bread crumbs." No breadcrumbs, barely broiled, almost no lemon in the buerre blanc -- I can't tell you the last time I've had to use a pepper shaker at the table, let alone the salt! No seasoning = greasy yuck. My husband ordered the broiled scallops with risotto: "broiled scallops and asparagus and wild mushroom risotto". What he got was broiled scallops and asparagus-wild mushroom risotto. (I really think a normal person would have expected actual asparagus spears, not a few bites mixed into an underseasoned risotto.) My kids -- thank God -- mostly enjoyed their food. My son was particularly happy with the kid's personal pepperoni pizza. ("The cheese is put on it just like DiGiornos!"). My daughter enjoyed her BBQ ribs -- beautiful smoke ring -- but the smashed potatoes were weird. I like putting sour cream on my smashed potatoes, but these seemed made with something more like cream cheese or something? The tables inside are so close, I don't know how the fire marshall hasn't shut them down -- staff had a few inches to pass between the back of my chair and the back of the chair behind me. Constantly. That was fun. All of my husband's food came out wrong the first time -- wrong salad dressing, wrong entree. And lest you think it's just us, the woman behind us ordered steak (maybe?) and had asked the server if its sauce came on the side. It came with some frou-frou painting of three different sauces coating the right half of her plate and under the meat, and the server said to her, "Yeah, see? It's on the side." (Of the plate) *face palm* Every. Other. Restaurant. on the island is better than this one. read more
