We went to Kubel's for dinner last night. Sat on the brand new deck area. It was lovely and spacious. I had Scott's smoked ribs and my guest had the Crab Pie. We both enjoyed our dinners very much. Our favorite place on the island to grab some food and drinks. Always a large specials menu. Went with their Mahi Mahi special and was licking the plate afterwards. Their jagerschnitzel is a staple. The free popcorn is always nice. Tends to be very busy and might have a wait during the summer months, but that's expected. read more

We had late lunch in a Saturday in off season. Place was decorated for Halloween and fire place was on. Nice atmosphere. The fries were the best. My Dad enjoyed the crab cake with no complaints ( hard to please) My wedge was good but way too much dressing. Scallop were cooked right for the bacon wrapped app...just way too much sweet sauce in them....Wish they had some gluten free options for celiacs. We have been going to Kubel's for the last 20 years to order their scallops. They used to consistently be the best, even through Covid when places were short staffed. I don't know what has changed but last night (10/29/23) was the worst dining experience I have ever had. We arrived aroung 6 pm, just before the dinner rush. We were seated at the outside deck as it was a beautiful Indian Summer evening in October. We waited patiently for service but no one approached our table to take out order. Other parties seated after us were being taken care of but not our table. We inquired 3x before someone came to take our order. We were told no one was assigned to our table. Right away my red flag went up indicating bad management. My husband and I ordered the BARNEGAT LIGHT SEA SCALLOPS broiled with a lemon buerre blanc and topped with seasoned bread crumbs for $40 (MP). My experience in the past has been that this is simple, clean dish highlighting the scallops which had a buttery texture. HOWEVER, this night was completely opposite experience. The scallops were tough and had an ammonia taste!! And the buerre blanc was completely different than what they used to make. It was as if they completely changed the recipe!!! The tough texture of the scallops and ammonia taste was so bad we couldn't finish our $40 plates. This was so inconsistent with our past experiences here that we asked to speak to the manager whom we thought would want to know about this. We also wanted to know if they changed the recipe of this dish. The manager who came to speak to us was a young woman, nice but ineffective. When we notified her about our concerns regarding the dish, she defensively assured us the scallops were fresh and that she saw them washing the scallops on the boats at Vikiing Village that very morning. I had to explain to this young manager that it was in her best interest for the sake of the restaurant and customers to listen to our feedback and find the source of the problem. I suggested they check their purchase from Viking Village or speak to the chef because something was very different. I felt like I was coaching her on how to do her job. My husband reminded her that we paid $40 ea for a dish that we can't eat. She simply 'smiled' and assured us that the scallops were fresh and nothing has changed. Even when I explained the recipe was different, she smiled again and said the recipe is the same, nothing has changed. That was a very BAD response to customers who have eaten here over the past 20 years. Very sorry to say that we will not be coming back. Don't think they will even notice or even care as they are always very crowded. Except for a few good wait staff, the manager clearly sent the message that they do not care about the satisfaction of their customers. read more

My wife and I are not the biggest Kubel's fans to begin with but we thought we would give it another shot. Our waitress was obviously new. (She couldn't open a bottle of wine - didn't know how the corkscrew worked. ) When we asked if the Salmon was gluten free or could be made gluten free, the waitress said she would ask. When she returned we were told that the kitchen "didn't know"). I tried to press her, asking how could the kitchen not know the ingredients in what they were cooking but we decided to give up and order a burger and a wedge salad with grilled chicken. While the burger and fries were good, the wedge came drenched with about 1/2 bottle of clue cheese dressing. A few pieces of dry grilled chicken came on a separate plate. We will not return for a while if ever. read more

Best grouper tacos I've had outside of Florida. Three fried grouper tacos served on soft flour tortillas supported by some house slaw. The toppings: mango jalapeño salsa and a nice drizzle of chipotle mayo. Didn't even bother with the side of rice since the tacos were sufficiently filling. Walked outside to a beautiful sunset next to the Coast Guard station here in Barnegat Light. read more

Go to LBI for vacation at least once a year and this is the place we go to for dinner, went with some friends and the food and the service was absolutely wonderful. The atmosphere is nice the staff is friendly food is great. We will definitely be back. By the way I had the scallops and they were amazing. read more

The service was excellent. They did not hand out straws if you've picky with drinking out the cup. We had the green tomato crab appetizer and it was delicious. They have the typical chicken fingers for kids but these were actually good and look like real chicken. My husband had the fish and chips and he loved it. I had the fish tacos, which were really good I just did not like that they were doused in the aioli sauce. Def could have went lighter on that. We did not have desert so cannot review that. Other than the aioli issue it was a good spot to eat near the lighthouse. read more

I really really really wanted to like Kubel's in Barnegat Light. With their long history, almost 90 years and their inclusion on the Anthony Bourdain Trail, there is no reason this should not be one of the better spots in the Jersey Shore. Sadly I feel ownership and especially the chef/cooks are just going through the motions. So I went on a Thursday afternoon, it wasn't busy, but what you expect for the off season. After being ignored by the waiter Justin, the bartender, who was extremely irritable, but was friendly to the locals that she knew, finally took my order. Started with the New England Clam Chowder, super super scalding hot, makes me think microwave, i could be wrong. They might as well call this Cream of Potato because the clams were so small they virtually disintegrated into the chowder. The soup itself was bland and had zero flavor, I even commented that I don't think they used salt and pepper in the kitchen. Next was the Fish & Chips, figured Jersey Shore, right down the block from a huge fish market, its going to be good. Boy was I wrong, it was your standard fare, pre battered, frozen, fish filets, that you get from Restuarant Depot, sad just sad. No flavor and 4 small mini fillets, fries were good but they to were the pre seasoned frozen variety. The cole slaw that came with my meal was literally 15 strands of shredded white and purple cabbage piled under the fish, no dressing, no seasoning, no nothing. I didn't even realize that was supposed to be cole slaw till afterwards when I looked at menu again. I understand the pricing as you have to make up for the slow months at the shore, that I can accept, but to just go through the motions on the food for a place with such a storied history is a disgrace. The kitchen staff should be completely revamped as either they lost any passion whatsoever, or just cutting corners to save money. read more

Wow. That's all I can say. My mom and I ate in the outside dining area. The service and food was outstanding. I had the tavern steak. It was so tender and the roll was so fresh. My mom had the scallops. She was still raving about them on the way home. She said they were so fresh and buttery tasting. We will definitely be back. I had what they call New England clam chowder. It was the worst clam chowder I have ever had. It was pasty and tasteless. I don't know what's happening with this venerable eatery, but the quality seems to have slipped. I have been going there for 60 years. Don't order the clam chowder under any circumstances. It's watery, pasty not taste whatsoever and a minuscule amount of minced clams from a can. This is sad because the bay is right across the street with professional clamber willing to sell their items if you had a chef who knew how to make it. In short, this place is outdated and overpriced. Have been a frequent customer of Kubel's for a number of years now. However, the most recent visit may have been my last. Wait staff here is very nice, but that's about it. The menu items look great, but the quality and taste just isn't there. We ordered 2 pasta dishes (shrimp & linguine as well as the veal parm). The meal was just overall very, very bland. Nothing here was fresh: the bread (although served warm) was very stale, salads looked like they were made back in the 1990s, and the pasta sauce tasted like the bottom shelf stuff you'd find at the grocery store. For ~$30 each entree you'd expect something a little better than what we got. Overall, for a restaurant in a nice location on the bay, I expected something better. Sorry, we don't agree with Anthony. The food was OK. The crab cakes were good, not a lot of filler. Came with some type of sauce, and dinner included a salad, which was, eh, salad. I also had the white clam chowder which had zero clam flavor. I did detect a few slivers of clam, but it was a bland cream of potato soup. The entire dinner was nothing to rave about. My family has been coming to Kubels for over 30 years (or more). Pre-Bourdain's discovery, Kubels has always been the local's place. We had a house in Barnegat light and Kublel's was always somewhere the family could go for really good fresh, quality food and seafood, without pretension, with the kids,and with friendly service. Ever since i was little, i remember the charred grilled burger being so satisfying, i never quite placed it, was it the grill, or the bun or the the jersey tomato crushing into the charred goodness. My mom would always get the scallops which are literally fresh off the boat across the street. Well, tonight i came in for a take out meal after the beach. I was craving the foods of childhood and well not going to lie, summer is all about grill foods for me, and that blackened charred flavor. I came into kubels on a whim not having called. I saw they had my beloved onions rings and orderd with nice server a beautiful burger on which i added sauteed onions and mushrooms ( my favorite topping) and subbed onion rings for fries While waiting, i surveyed some amazing old photos on the woodwalls, including photos of Anthony Bourdain himself, local fishermen, and boats. The lovely hostess was so friendly and after conversing, it turned out we were some the same hometown. Also, the charming server got my order perfect in 10min and even included some bbq sauce on side . Its like she read my mind because i love bbq with my rings:) Burger was amazing, so thick, beautiful blackened/grilled flavor, and onion rings were best I've had in a while. I loved knowing that after all these years, Kubels is still the same, somewhere where people care. Somewhere you can strike up conversation and get quality meal without too much fluff. Hopefully it will be there in 30 more years when I become a local again:) read more

They need PAPER MENUS. My 80 yr old parents don't carry cellphones. The restaurant had ONE paper menu passed from table to table. I watched a table of six who had one cellphone on them share it to see the menu. I watched tables of couples looking at the menu while the other 2 people sat and waited. Print Menus!!
