I saw a Groupon for Korean body scrub and massage for $69. I had received a Korean scrub before and decided to give them a shot. Massage: C-, My masseuse did not introduce himself and the receptionist had to tell me to disrobe. He never asked about where my problem spot were. I asked him 3 times to 'work on my legs' after he spent a really long time on my back/ribs. He did not understand my request and stepped out--the receptionist came in to ask if there was a problem. I told her..."i just want my legs worked on." I was not given an intake form when i arrived and there was someone else's intake form in my room so I guess my masseuse use that one?! (Name on it: BOB) scrub: performed by a female attendant. B-/C+. I could have done something simular at home for myself. When i left the spa a different receptionist asked me how my services went. She could tell i was disappointed and I told her about the intake form mix up. To the company/manager credit, she called me and left a message and gave me a partial refund for my troubles. While the chairs are comfortable for the foot massage it doesn't make sense to be sitting up on the foot stool slumped over onto a bolster to get my neck and shoulders first. That creates more tension in my back having to sit like that. I highly recommend replacing the chairs with flat tables like the rest of the foot spas do. They gave me the intro rate, was able to get me in same day, and the massage was pretty good. I bought a Groupon for a Korean scrub and massage and was very disappointed. The infrared sauna was a phone booth size personal sauna where I sat for 10 minutes before I was taken into a converted bathroom with a table for the scrub. I have had Korean scrub/spa experiences before and this paled dramatically in comparison. Although I told the front desk (when they asked me) that I like very strong pressure, as well as asking the massage therapist for firmer pressure, I was disappointed in the weak treatment. There were no spa facilities available or tea served. If you are looking for an authentic Korean scrub/massage, try PSY in San Leandro or Imperial Spa in San Francisco. read more

I have been a member since Kume the spa opened. I have always been impressed with their business model and how they dealt with any problems I might have had with the service, until now. On July 7th I had a 2 hour message scheduled at 2:00 at 17th street location, however in their system they had it for 12:00. When I arrived I was advised that I was late and I was charged. When I asked to speak to a manager I was told I had to email them. I then called the Grand Ave. and asked to speak to a manager, the person took my phone number and told a manager would call me. After the email I sent was not delivered I called again and was given another email, which as of today I have sent 3 emails that have not been responded to. Additionally no one has returned my 6 phone calls. This is not how management in the past has handled any disputes. I guess the customers concerns don't matter to them any more. AVOID: At first glance, this was an amazing Groupon deal. However, when engaging with manager Merna over the current cancellation policy she was very rude and hostile which left to little to be desired. Originally, I engaged with Merna about the possibility to change my appointment; however, after her abrupt communication I was left to believe that customer care was not of importance. What hurt the most was not the cancellation policy, but how Merna communicated and engaged with me. Merna stated "you can keep your current booking and or reschedule the booking at the cost of your current Groupon voucher." Based on this, I had decided to maintain my appointment; however, after further dialogue I realized that I would be 1.) Unhappy 2.) uncomfortable and 3.) Treated poorly should I maimtain my original appointment due to Merna belittling and unwelcoming attitude. Thus, I elected to forfeit my current voucher and never to patron here. On one hand I appreciate a business who has a clear and concise policy; however, I did not appreciate the way that I was communicated with. Response: Merna, unfortunately I cannot respond via the below option hence to this edit. While the content of the response is semi accurate, it is not about the policy but more so how you chose to communicate with me. Your behaviors and the condescending nature of your remarks are why I was unwilling to accept any changes. As noted, I was going to attempt the 90 min booking but after further conversation with you, I noted that you left little to be desired as your communication style was inefficient. For clarity, and as noted in our call and email correspondence, I had not received the cancellation policy prior to the conversation nor had I ever been at Kume or on the website as I booked via Groupon. Ever since my massage at Kume, last month, my ankle has been clicking when I rotate it and I have had a mild cramp in the ball if my foot. Neither of these where issues before I came in and both things started the next day. It was clear the therapist had either no knowledge or regard for anatomy. He immediately zoned out and was pushing his thumb hard and repetitively in the same 3 spots for almost an hour. Sometimes just pushing straight on bone. Immediately after the massage, I let the front desk know that it was a bad experience. I was told that in the future I should say something during the massage. I definitely tried to, but there was a language barrier. I still tipped the guy, bc he seemed pretty over-worked. They mentioned that they would put a note on my account to ensure I don't see him again. At first I felt like this was a decent response. But now I need to see a doctor. Lesson learned: unskilled massage therapists can do real damage. It looks like a lot of people have had good experiences here and others have had zoned-out therapists like mine. I suggest getting a recommendation on a good therapist to make sure you have a good experience and avoid injury. Adding a star for a nice waiting room and clean facility. Best of luck. My hope is that instead of an apology or excuse response that most businesses give, that Kume takes an inquisitive look at what's happening in the foot massage room. Retrain and supervise therapists who repeatedly get complaints. The consequences for clients can be very real. read more

My first visit here was awesome:) I was able to be accommodated on short notice and as soon as I checked in I was offered herbal tea or some lemon water. They gave me a clipboard asking about my areas that I would like worked on specifically. I also choose deep massage too (since that's what I normally get at other places). My massage therapist Dave has a VERY strong hand and was very attentive to my areas that needed extra help. He was also attentive to other areas that I needed him to be lighter. The receptionists are very nice and professional as well. Overall this was a great experience and I'm considering getting a membership! read more

Great massage...but VERY STRANGE experience when the receptionist insisted on getting everyone in our group's telephone numbers and full names. She wanted to add our private data to the company's database. In a world of data hacks and identity theft, why did they need to collect and store our full names and telephone numbers for a massage? I'm sure it wasn't the receptionist's fault, as she was just doing her job. But the store data collection policy is reckless and suspicious. They should change this policy or folks who understand how data theft works will stop going there. ****** Thanks for your response. Brought my best friend here for an early Mothers day spa date after some research on Yelp and it seemed to have pretty good prices with good reviews. Here's my random blurb: - hard to find parking, make sure to try and arrive extra 15 mins before your appointment so you have time to find parking. Oops. - the foot massage room was kinda like a communal room with other clients, and at first it was kinda awkward because all the workers would stare.... but i thought about it and it was either because we are cute girls or.... just loud. So i think its the latter..... - Requested for two ladies to work on us and my lady was way too gentle so I asked her to use more pressure. After that, I felt like she used her entire body to work on me, lol! I left him a tip on the table in the room because I was raised right. As I was leaving the front door the receptionist yells out in front of several guests Did you leave a tip? I can't believe this place is still in business. The first time I came here for a pedicure that lasted about 15 minutes and was insufficient on all levels. About a year later I ended up back here, again being gifted the procedure I was assured that the salon was under new management. I opted for a Korean style body scrub. I've been a customer for over 10 years. I moved out of Oakland but come here whenever I'm in town because it's, frankly, one of the only familiar places left for me. The last time I came, my therapist literally dozed off in the middle of my massage. The owner emailed me to offer a complimentary massage to atone for this so I thought I'd try again. This time my therapist had a full on cold and while he seems to be great at what he does, I did not appreciate being sneezed on, being touched my him in between coughing fits, and hearing other sick therapists hawk loogies in the back. I love the new look and the expansion in their new location which is only a few doors down from their previous one is beautiful and welcoming. I love deep pressure services and the man for the job is Andy. He is great with his hands and offers a steady flow as he services you. From the foot massage to the body massage I was thoroughly satisfied. When I left I was so relaxed but I felt like I was drunk, I was actually stumbling but with the cold air I recovered. I took a shower then was energized because Andy worked all of the kinks out. The next day I felt so good that I was floating on air. Got the groupon for the scrub and massage, overall experience is probably not worth the drive there again. Wasn't sure what to expect with the scrub, but Joyce was super sweet and easy to talk to. I think she did an amazing and thorough job. Expect to be very naked. If you're shy, this probably isn't the service for you. The scrub has left me super soft and feeing great! If only that continued into the massage.. I had to wait about 10-15 minutes for a massage room to become available, no problem, I talked with Joyce a little more until a room opened up. Room was super cold and there was a barrier in the middle of the room separating me from another client. When they were done I don't think they closed the door on that side because I felt like i was hearing all the lobby noise. Not sure what the guys name is who massaged me. He was rough from the beginning and not with pressure. More like vigorously pushing my body with fast strokes that did absolutely nothing but move my entire body. I asked for deep tissue so I thought ok maybe he's just warming up the tissue before getting in there. Waited and waited but nope just pressing and smashing my head into the face cradle every forward and back motion. Worst massage and no technique what so ever. What's even worse is that I felt like he was just scratching me the whole time. Yup. He had long nails. When I was finally about to ask him to just stop he said ok done! Thank goodness. I have never wanted a massage to stop sooner. Only after I got up from the bed did I see a note on the wall in the dark room saying something like " if you are unsatisfied with your massage let them know within the first 10 minutes so they can try to pair you with another therapist". I wish I saw that sooner, although I don't think it would have made a difference. My friend said she had the same experience. Terrible massage and moving her body the entire time. I feel like instead of offering to change technicians, how about a little more training. I like this place A LOT. Their scrubs are AMAZING. But what I don't like is that the front staff is a bit rude and when I proved a point to them they were still rude. I will explain. I've come to this business a couple of times. I would certainly come more often, but as I live more than an hour away it's not accommodating or easy for me to plan on going. This last time, I made an appointment, had to change it and not ONCE was I told that there is a $5.00 service fee that I would have to pay. I had even checked my Groupon and didn't see it. She even told me that my confirmation email said it and I proved that it didn't. I was happy to pay it and even told the front desk this. But I certainly did NOT appreciate the sassy and sarcastic attitude that came from the front staff about it as if I owed them. And quite frankly this was the 2nd time I left feeling that the front staff was very unfriendly. I only went back because the service itself was the absolute BEST. I don't know if I will go there again. I may, as I was planning to get a gift certificate for a friend that I know who would enjoy this as well but I certainly don't have the time or appreciation for staff that's going to be rude about it. I'll never return to this place again. I hadn't been in here in years but received an email for a Black Friday special deal (90-minute scrub and massage combo) so I bought one for me and another for my daughter. I called on Friday for a Saturday treatment and arrived several minutes early. The receptionist had no idea what I was talking about and insisted it was a 60-minute combo and I was glad I had brought a printout of my reservation so I could make sure we got what I paid for. We waited 15 minutes, no word was given as to the reason for the delay and when I asked, she told me that they were waiting for the sauna to warm up? Huh? You waited until we ARRIVED to turn on the frigging sauna? Really? I explained to her that I had a 3:00 play to attend and with a 90-minute session, plus their delay, it was gonna cut it way too close, so we requested a refund, but they were unable to do so because, though I'd responded to their email, I purchased it through a third party and that party would have to issue the refund. At no time did either receptionist apologize or express any remorse or even a modicum of concern with our terrible experience there. They certainly reminded us why stopped going to Kume years ago. Now, to deal with getting my refund. UPDATE: Three days later, I'm STILL fighting to get a refund. The company that handles their online marketing, FetchRev, no matter which number you call or which option you select, you can NEVER get through to an actual person. I've left multiple messages, to no avail. NOW, I'm going to my bank to file a claim against them and Kume. Their customer service is AWFUL! read more

You get what you pay for. I came here on a Groupon for a massage, body scrub and infared sauna. The interior was nice and pretty relaxing, with complementary tea and lemon water. The service itself was meh. The masseuses barely spoke English, which isn't something I would care about other than communicating when getting a massage and scrub is really important. But...there wasn't really much communication happening anyway. The person giving me the massage never said hi or introduced herself, never asked how the pressure was, never asked if I had any areas I wanted her to focus on. The massage was OK. Felt more like I was getting rubbed on most of my body than actually massaged by an expert. My feet were barely touched, my hamstrings were never touched without the blanket. The woman giving me the scrub didn't explain the process at all, didn't ask if I'd ever been in an infared sauna before (I hadn't) so I was just kind of lost throughout the process. Also had to get completely naked in front of her in the broad light, which I guess should be expected, but still felt really awkward. The platform they wash you on doesn't seem that sanitary...I saw them washing it but they should really lay something protective down given people are laying butt naked on it. There was one point when she left the room and I was face down with a wet towel on my back for 5 minutes... had no idea when she was coming back or why I was laying there like that. She also was actively cleaning the room before/after I got on the bed, while I was in the sauna. I appreciated her making sure it was clean, but it wasn't relaxing at all to be there for that. I really wanted to like this place, but unfortunately my experience there was not great. My massage therapist used latex gloves which tore up my feet. They burned for days after my massage and were almost too tender to put my shoes back on. I don't blame him, rather I blame Kume. They should have let me know that the therapist that I was booked with likes to wear latex gloves and I would have waited for the next therapist. I frequently get foot massages and this was the worst one by far. I couldn't relax or settle in and thus I had a disturbing session. I wanted to write a review of this place but had a hard time finding it on here (it's called Kume Spa on google/on the door). The following is my review based on two visits, and a background of having received massages/reflexology in the past. General Info: The place is set up in three parts: the reception area that has a couch and some seats, a communal, large, foot massage room, and a series of private massage rooms. It seems they've recently added a sauna/scrub type room as well, but I have not personally seen it. All in all, I'd recommend this place. The experience is relaxing, and the price is right (if you are a member and go on Tues-Thu due to the special discount -- otherwise, its pricey for communal reflexology). Specifics: Pros: - The couches in the reflexology room are so comfortable. I fell asleep both times I visited. - They give you a blanket and tea. It's super cozy. - The receptionists speak English fluently, and you can be specific about what you like and don't like, and they'll make sure the masseuse is aware. - They actually massage you for the full amount of time you pay for, and don't skip out on the full hour like some other places. - The female masseuses are so sweet and seem to really care about your experience. Cons: - Both times I've visited, I noticed that the male masseuses are a bit loud in the common area/reflexology room. They'll talk among themselves, or to the client when they're done. They kind of slam items around too. It's a bit weird and it makes it seem they're annoyed/don't want to be there. I felt they were making noises to display their frustration, but who knows. It woke me up once, and then it just kind of continued sporadically throughout the massage. - I think the place could benefit from letting clients know not to talk after leaving their individual massages (I actually did this myself the first time I was there because I didn't realize there was a common room without a door for foot massages) so I was talking in the hallway. This type of talking can be distracting when you're in the foot massage room and being aware of it would definitely stop a lot of people! In terms of the massage itself, I have really enjoyed it. I think they could benefit from holding some of the stretches a bit longer so that you actually get the full benefit and it's not just a movement they have to get through, but otherwise I've really enjoyed the experience. I really am unhappy with my first visit. I see why the prices are so low because the service sucks! I had a 9:15 appointment, the service didn't exactly start until 9:30. He didn't introduce himself at all to me, and made sure he told me they close in 30min. Not relaxing at all after a long day of work. My massage was over at 9:57, which means I didn't get my full massage. Yes, I wanted my 2min more of "relaxation", I'm paying for it. In fact I put my clothes back on and went to pay and it still wasn't 10:00. I informed the receptist, but she said she didn't know what time he started, but I informed her 9:30. The man came to get me at 9:24. Overall the massage was okay, but seemed very rushed. Did I add the man had to leave the room twice to get a hot towel, so that cut into my time as well. I really think hot towels should be in the room. Usually after a massage you receive water, well I guess not here. After I paid I asked the receptist do you usually get water afterwards, she said yes. Well I didn't see the person who gave me the massage afterwards nor any water. Idk where he was, she even looked from her seat. No where to be found, I left after all that. In addition the front desk girls were both talking to someone about pictures in her phone when I arrived. Finally one of them greeted me after a few minutes. Epic fail, but never again. When they told be they didn't have any 1hr massages appointments left, I should have just went home and relaxed in my bathtub. The only thing this place is good for is probably there tea. I am IN LOVE with Kume Spa! After our first visit we instantly purchased the couple's membership. If you get massages at least 3 times within a year you will save money getting the membership. Prices are super reasonable. I've experienced many massage places and out of all of them Kume Spa is a gem. The moment you enter their shop, it is welcoming and cozy. It smells pleasant because the gift shop have oils and candles. It's charming and appealing. Most importantly, the massage therapists give consistently good service. All the masseuse have been good. You get a chart to mark your ideal pressure from light, medium, or deep (I like it DEEP). Every therapist made us feel safe and respected. Our bodys' needs were tended to with care. While you wait there are couches for you to relax on and they offer you yummy tea or lemon infused ice water. As a plus, you can buy cute gifts for your friends. We tend to come in on Thursdays as there is discount for members Tuesday-Thursday. It's also right by Lake Merritt where there are a variety of restaurants and fun things to do before or after your massage. LOVE THIS PLACE SO MUCH! read more
